This is such a great video! I feel the same way that you described at the start of the video: I absolutely do not listen to music with the intent of observing the lyrics. They're always a last thought for me. But ever since dropping SPT, underscores has been my favorite artist of all time, and they've been the ONLY person to truly make me sit down and actually look into the lyrical genius behind their projects. Every project after that, I didn't really love as much until I looked up the genius page and took in every moment being described. We never get strawberry cake, character development, and now fishmonger and boneyard are incredible projects that grew on me the moment I looked into the story she was telling. Devon is nothing short of a musical prodigy, and i'm always happy to see the attention and praise they get on their work, old and new.
this was by far one of my favorite music related videos of all time. i feel like ur theories are absolutely correct, and it was really nice to have all the thoughts i have about this project be represented by such a comprehensive breakdown. there’s one thing i’d like to know your thoughts on, by the off chance you read this. while i feel like you’re right, the message of these songs could be applied to anything, i kinda feel like it represents a struggle with gender identity. idk maybe it’s because i struggle with my gender identity so naturally that’s what i apply the message to, but i noticed in displacement of reasoning, the logical and emotional sides of devon were referring to them by different pronouns. this really struck me bc, as said in the song, it was a life changing decision, and coming out really changes everything about your life you know?

i feel like the ep is about the emotional side giving in to transgender-ism and the logical side trying to shut it down. in the end, both sides are needed to pursue this life changing transition, you cannot suppress your emotions and you cannot ignore your logical side. the two sides have to work together, and this ep expresses how hard it can be to make them collaborate
oh and yea, the ep ends with one of the side killing the other (most probably the emotional side killing the logical one) and ''fka'' expresses the grief that comes with shutting/killing one of them; you feel incomplete.
I just found this video and I am very happy that there is literally talk of an artist who changed a lot in me and who is rarely talked about. I've listened to him since the time when he was doing Dubstep mashups like "Buttons", and I didn't hear anything about Underscores again until I came across "Melodrama" which prompted me to listen to the whole EP, nowadays he's my favorite artist. Thank you Devon Karpf.
one interesting wrinkle is that underscores almost sounds like they aren’t trying to be understood. She’s just making art for herself, expressing the deepest sides of their life and identity, but keeping it hidden under so many layers so that it will only be understood by the ppl who need it the most. and maybe, also be hidden from her religious family?? idk. like you said underscores has kept their personal life very secretive so I don’t think she wants us speculating too much on that. BUT YES I FUCKING LOVE UNDERSCORES AND HER ART
