Bravo Stephanie McCallum! Long time alkan devotee, but never heard this before. Constantly amazed at Alkan's unique inventiveness.
I first listened to this back into early 2010s when Hexameron channel wasn't terminated by UA-cam. Hamelin's interpretation was by far the best one I've ever heard.

These sound very similar to songs without words op. 19.
That was Alkan's intention --- he wrote five sets of six Chants, and deliberately based each set on Mendelssohn's first set of Songs without Words.
