Alkan is one of the best composers. People knows him mainly for his virtuosity, but Alkan's music is more than just virtuosity, it's music full of emotion and passion + with formical and harmonic perfection!

The Chant de Guerre is a wonderful showcase of Alkan's ability to pull some truly unique sounds out of a piano. Love it.

If anyone plays Alkan's music better, I have yet to hear them. Brava! Thanks for posting.

alkan speaks in words with music--alkan is words in music--alkan isn't music fundamentally, he is stories and conversations fundamentally--his piano composing proposes stories and conversations--but his piano can't do actual music independent of stories and conversations--alkan is unique and to be treasured forever, but not as music: he is sprechen, he is spoken, he is small simple words uttered in small simple piano tropes--he is story-telling cliche--his sole interest is piano technique, hand technique, finger technique--the rest is cliche--and to pianists: he fudged technique in everything he published, never indicated how a working pianist might play what he published--very good pianists have worked out ways to play some of the more absurd material...i enjoy it, i subscribe, it's like watching super super athelets--alkan is interesting as words pretending to be music
