  • I've seen a lot of discourse online about the representation of Sonic in the Super Smash Bros. series, including a lot of incorrect assumptions. So, this video is all about clearing up those misconceptions that I've regularly seen. I'll be covering Sonic's moveset, music, and whether or not the director Sakurai even likes Sonic in the first place.

    1. Whenever I told ny two Sonic fan friends about the online discourse about Sonic's moveset and they were surprised. They felt it was very Sonic like (and I love it. I think it feels better playing it than seeing a list of moves) I think this comes down to how different the playstyles of Sonic are in his games. Sonic feels very different playing him in classic games and Unleashed.
    I hold mad respect for thr Akenia Build (a mod of Melee that adds more characters including Sonic to the game) for mostly keeping the same moveset instead of a "correct" moveset. They changed his side special to a light speed dash and some stat changes to better fit Melee, but that's it.
    2. I think what else is ignored is the Sonic series has so many vocal songs. In fact, it has more vocal music than any franchise in Smash, and the second most vocalists (Wario has fewer songs, but Sonic only has solos).
    As confirmed by development from Sonic Movie 3, they need Johnny Gioeli's permison to use Live and Learn because it's his actual voice.
    Unlike Mario & Sonic (which also doesn't remix Sonic music as much as Mario), the emphasis on Sonic music in Smash is vocal themes (and I won't lie, I'd do the same). If a game has a vocal track, they'll most likely use it over a level them. They need to get the rights from SEGA AND the vocalists to use all these tracks, which likely was within a "Sonic Budget". And there are even notable songs that even Sega doesnt always get the rights too.
    Sonic You Can Do Anything (which was planned for Brawl), His World, and Endless Possibilities are difficult for Sega to get ahold of, and they rarely splurge for it like Origins and Generations. You can also see this in the selction for Frontiers DLC (I'm honestly worried they might not appear in Sonic x Shadow Generations)
    3. One thing that surprises me sometimes is Sakurai seems to really love the Genesis Sonic games. Mega Drive didnt sell well in Japan, and most Japanese Sonic fans have more nostalgia for the Adventure games than the Mega Drive ones. But yeah. Unfortunately the internet thinks its not enough to like the franchise. You need to see it as the best thing since sliced bread.
    If you got this far, thank you for reading it all. I loved this video and want more people to see it. Like you said, you don't have to like how they do Sonic in Smash. But don't you dare call Sakurai lazy.

      That’s a really good point about the vocal songs. Getting all of those in could have had an effect on the budget for Sonic in Smash that I didn’t consider.

    I believe another reason why people have a problem with sonics representation is that sonic has been here since brawl and hes the only character from his series. 3rd party Series that joined in later smash games got a second character those being street fighter and castlevania who got echo fighter's and final fantasy got a whole original second character with sephiroth it just kinda looks weird with sonic being the only character from his series considering hes been in 3 to 4 smash games now depending on how you count it.

      Yeah, I’d definitely have loved for another Sonic character to get added to the roster. My personal choice for a second Sonic rep would be Knuckles, but Tails, Shadow, Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic, or even Amy would all be awesome potential additions as well.

    Regarding Sonic’s move-set, the “simplicity” is the reason people don’t like it. Sure, there wasn’t much that could be done about it for Brawl. But smash 4 and Ultimate were perfect opportunities to give Sonic a move set that better represents him. Even at the time of Brawl’s release there was plenty of games to make a move set from, but the only reasons for his final move set are because he was the last character added and Sakurai mostly pulled from the Genesis games. His moves aren’t just “simple”, they’re bland. You can like his current move set all you want but you can’t deny that he needs a new one.

    Hey, great video! Honestly, I think that the main reason behind the fact that we didn't really get any new Sonic characters in Smash, nor any new remixs, etc etc is simply due to the state Sonic was in with each installment from Brawl to Ultimate. He was still popular, obviously, but he, along with his series, was in a weird white limbo of sorts, not entirely irrelevant, but also not that relevant either, so the Smash team probably saw more big opportunities to expand other franchises in Smash.

      That’s a good point; I can’t truly argue that that’s not a factor, especially when you consider the latest Sonic releases were all generally considered lackluster when each new Smash with him was coming out (Sonic 2006, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Forces).

    I have 3 things to say:
    1. I can confidently say I've learned something from this video.
    2. Isn't the Sonic Generations song a remix of an Unleashed song? Not in Smash, but in the Sonic series.
    3. My personal theory for Sonic's moveset mainly coming from Fighters is because he probably played it in the arcade. I'm pretty sure Sakurai got the idea to make Smash in the first place after playing King of Fighters in the arcade. KOH being where Terry is from.

    • @HatStackMike
      @HatStackMike  2 місяці тому +1

      1. Glad to hear it! 😀
      2. I mean, technically yeah the version of Rooftop Run in Smash is a remix of the version from Unleashed, but that wasn’t a new remix made for Smash and is just considered as a “Sonic Generations” song, so it’s not really along the lines of what I was referring to with “new remixes”. Still a fair point, though.
      3. Yeah I definitely think that Sonic the Fighters gave some inspiration for Sonic’s moveset, especially that wind-up punch.

    Aside from having two spindashes and a generic jump kick for a dash attack, I also like Sonic's moveset.
    Since he is based on the simple gameplay of the Genesis era games, he could have side special be a damaging version of the peel out from Sonic CD and down special spindash could take the properties of side special spindash

    Respect for this video, can't stand to how people make these overblown claims of his inclusion having so many flaws when they're honestly not even a big deal when taking about Sonic in Smash,
    I don't even think his moveset is that bad, its the stuff that you would mostly expect for a game like this, although my biggest issue is that the side special is named the spindash when the down special is functionally more accurate and should just be connected as one move, along having the side be literally anything else but whatever...
    2nd issue i have was the 2nd Sonic stage added being Windy Hill Zone from Lost World, which is aesthetically similar to green hill and a boring choice, but because LW being the recent sonic game and this stage was the only thing teased at the time(2013), meaning that we unfortunately going to get this stage, again like the first issue litterally anything else would've been way more interesting (Sky Sanctuary, Casino Park, Planet Wisp, etc), also they should have his friends appear as background cameos cause it would be neat to see them and take pictures :D
    A more personal issue is music, im not gonna say that the song list is bad(it isn't obviously), but why stop at just 20?? Sonic music is so popular that fans of other series can admit its amazing stuff, so clearly more songs should be added, though unpopular suggestions being that they don't even have to be new remixes, and more unpopular is that its should be a good variety from new and old and not just recent and vocal songs only, heck include remixes that were already made (Generations, Team Sonic Racing, etc) and I'd say it good enough!
    But that aside, Sonic has good amount of representation and I'm tired of pretending it isn't... even if i do understand where they're being reasonable from (i just wanna experience sonic vs shadow in smash that'd be awesome)...

    • @HatStackMike
      @HatStackMike  Місяць тому +2

      Thanks! I definitely agree that discourse about Sonic in Smash is often way overblown.
      Yeah I would have preferred pretty much any other area from Sonic as a second stage than Windy Hill Zone. I get why they chose it though, since as you said Lost World was the latest Sonic game at the time and they wanted to promote that. But man, how cool would something like Chemical Plant have been?
      I also would have definitely loved to get more Sonic music in Smash, including remixes that were already made for other games like you said. Also as much as I love the vocal themes, a bit more of the actual level music would have been nice. Ah well.

    I like that Sonic's Jab is a reference Virtual Fighter, i really do, but Sakurai
    THERE ARE WAY BETTER THINGS YOU COULD HAVE REFERENCED
    THERE IS A 3 HIT JAB COMBO RIGHT THERE IN SONIC BATTLE
    Also i like the idea, but Sonic is more than Spindash, he has a Boost, he has Sonic wind, Sonic Tornado, not to mention the attacks from Sonic Battle
    If you want a more simple Sonic
    Just add Classic Sonic as a fighter with most of the simplicity of the original verson of Sonic and then redesign Sonic to be more based off of Sonic Battle and Frontiers in the next Smash game
    And with Classic Sonic, THERE'S STILL ROOM FOR SIMPLE, BUT FUN REFERENCES, why not make his Smash attacks versions of the Elemental Shields
    Make his tilts Moves from Sonic the Fighters his foward tilt can be his iconic clap that pancakes the other fighter's head
    My issue with Sonic's moveset is how disrespectfull it is to his most iconic abbilities THAT AREN'T SPINDASH
    I have a similar issue with Kirby
    SAKURAI IS SO BIASED TOWARD HIS WORK ON KIRBY

      I understand where you're coming from, but I don't agree with the take that he doesn't respect abilities from Sonic that aren't Spin Dash.
      TL;DR The short version of what I'm about to say goes as follows. Sonic in Smash *already* has several moves in his kit that are either very similar to, or direct references to abilities besides Spin Dash, altho most of them are from Sonic The Fighters, and *one* of them is from Sonic Battle. Ultimately, the real problem is specifically Sidr B & Down B being the *exact* same move.
      That's the short version. The long version is below.
      His current Forward Tilt and Up Tilt in Smash *already are* either straight from Sonic The Fighters, or if not that, *very similar* to moves Sonic has in Sonic The Fighters.
      The same can be applied to even his current Jab (sure, it may not be exactly like how it is specifically in Sonic The Fighters, but it's still close enough if you ask me), as well as Forward Air (very similar if not just outright referencing Emerald Dive), Forward Smash (Wind Up Punch, direct reference to a move he has in Sonic The Fighters), his Down Throw (also either inspired by or a direct reference to a move he can use in Sonic The Fighters), and his Brawl Down Smash (y'know that one move from Sonic The Fighters where he spins around his opponent to make them dizzy? Yeah). Yes, I know Down Throw & Brawl Down Smash both technically involve him Spin Dashing, but if you ask me? They're different enough from his regular Spin Dash to where I can see why he had those moves... just not why both Side B and Down B are Spin Dashes 😭😭😭😭
      Ironically the replacement Down Smash got in Smash 4 & Ultimate is *less* referencial than what he had in Brawl. Altho in that regard, perhaps o make it more on the nose, they could've kep Brawl Down Smash, but make it so when he hits you with it, instead of knocking you away it makes you become dizzy.
      Lastly, I want to talk about one more move in Sonic's Kit that isn't a Spin Dash while also being similar to, or a direct reference to a non-Spin Dash ability of his. Down Air (we all know what Up Special is LOL). Doesn't that move strike as being very similar to a move Sonic has in Sonic Battle? Only in Sonic Battle, Sonic didn't drop down when doing it... but SHADOW *did* drop down when doing his version of the move. I find it kinda hilarious that Smash Sonic effectively has a move that's from Shadow's kit instead of Sonic's.
      All in all, if you ask me? The ONLY real issue with Sonic's moveset in Smash is Side B & Down B BOTH being a variant of the standard Spin Dash. One of those should be replaced, and if you ask me? I'd go with the Boost for Side B.
      EXTRA IRRELEVANT NOTE: Recently I found out *some* people think his Up Smash is based in a move Sonic has in Sonic Spinball. I personally don't fully agree with this as I believe it to be a Smash Original, but I can at least see how that conclusion could be drawn.

    By the way, I have some issues with Sonic myself. Like how some of Sonic’s specials are essentially the same move. The garbage taught changes from Brawl to Ultimate. And many more that are just hot garbage decisions made on him. And that’s rich coming from a big fan of Lost World.

  • @RealBroccoliHour
    @RealBroccoliHour Місяць тому +6

    I’ve always thought Sonic’s moveset was perfectly fine, even with the whole thing with side-B and down-B being similar; they’re different enough to have their own utility and open up different movement and approach options for Sonic. It feels like combining all the similar movement options Sonic had in the Genesis and even Dreamcast and Modern games to speed tun through levels more optimally. Like how because of side-B, Sonic has a functionally similar move to the Spin dash jump from SA1 called the “Spin shot.”
    I’d say Sonic’s simplicity actually captures his character and series pretty well for the most part, aside from maybe 2 or 3 random moves that could’ve been more inspired like down smash, dash attack, and fair. It would’ve also been cool if they changed his nair to represent the insta-shield.

  • @OneAndOnlyDanky
    @OneAndOnlyDanky Місяць тому +3

    While I don’t think Sonic's simple moveset was because of the rushed development, I don’t have any doubt about the fact that the lack of time played a factor on how it came out. It feels underbaked beyond the concept of it being simple (also he said he didn’t forget to make Sonic fun to play as, but they did forget to make him fun to play against). Though somehow Brawl Sonic is still the one with the most effort put in though, I mean they recorded new voice lines and he's much more expressive. No clue why his model in Smash 4 and especially Ultimate are so terrible, it’s probably Sega. It’s usually Sega.
    (Also one thing to note is that Sonic is much less popular in Japan than in America, so that might factor into it somewhat as well)

      That’s a good point, and there might be more going on with the Sonic music stuff that we’re not privy to, but what I can say there is that if you go to the sound test in Smash Ultimate and look at the info for remixes, Nintendo holds the “Arrangement Copyright” for the Persona and Bayonetta remixes, while for Sonic’s Angel Island remix, SEGA themselves holds the “Arrangement Copyright”. So there’s definitely SOMETHING going on with that.

    Sonic is actually unbeatable in paced fighting, usually in smash, people wanna 0 to death or heavy strike with high damage, sonic is about racking quick and moderate damge, then you can go for Fsmash, or back airkick, or homing attack to finish. His recovery is well above average. And if you can get somebody into a sudden death match, you win. Just run back, forward towards the opponent, dash TOWARDS them, this baits the opponent into thinking you will blitz them, so when they hit (probably with a special) quick tap neutral special, its quick and op in sudden deaths and ensures victory

It just needs a few tweeks, like changing side b and moving fair to nair, and I think the character would be seen in a better light. In JP the voice is reused from Brawl so I guess nintendo didn't bother recording new stuff in English, same goes for other characters like Lucina who reuses Smash 4 voices in English and Japanese despite having a new English voice actress by then. Only difference is sega likely forced nintendo to use Roger's voice so they had to pull clips from other games

    I personally would change some of sonic's move to have more stuff from the modern games because most of his moveset is great!
    the only things I would change would be his side b for the boost
    His homing attack will have poses that references the ones he does in the games after a homing attack
    The animation for his nair being the instant shield from sonic 3
    His grab animations to more frontiers based attacks
    Like his down smash could be the cyloop which would send you flying up potential kill move
    His forward throw would look like the loop kick
    His up throw could the tornado kick
    His back throw would be the cross slash move
    His up air would be the Mario's up air
    His up tilt would be the sonic draft
    The up smash would be one massive strong hit rather than multi hits
    His down smash would be the sonic flare from sonic battle
    And the dair to either the stomp, the bounce from sa1 and 2, or the sonic eagle
    And maybe to really nail that sonic frontiers feel give him the phantom rush gauge that fills up by attacking the opponent and would change your jab into the phantom rush and maybe increase your speed but lower your attack power or knockback either works fine and also make sonic lighter to balance it out more

      Up throw being cyloop, boost for side b and one of the final hit animations from the Titan fights for his Final Smash.
      Also with Forward air being replaced with Sonic Eagle from Sonic Battle and original side b combined with down b as a hold and mash input system would woukd be the ideal Sonic moveset in the next Smash game

    • @HatStackMike
      @HatStackMike  Місяць тому +2

      Hmm… you’re right! I looked through the info for many other remixes, and felt pretty confident in saying that the Angel Island was the only one that Nintendo didn’t hold the arrangement copyright for, but clearly I overlooked some. I’ll admit to not doing my due diligence there and being wrong about my statement. Thanks for pointing that out!
      However, with that being said, the Angel Island remix still stands out for being done completely in-house by Jun Senoue at SEGA. The rest of the remixes still seem to be from composers outside their company, even if the company themselves holds the arrangement copyright, like the Vega Stage remix by Yoko Shimomura for example.

    I agree with you. I actually like Sonic's moveset in Smash. It seems like he's gotten stronger in each game.
    Funny enough, Smash 4 was around the time that I got more invested into the Sonic series. I thought that he got a sizable buff from Brawl to Smash 4, alongside a nice new model.
    I get the feeling that a lot of the saltiness with Sonic's rep in Smash is due to not getting a new character in Ultimate while other third-parties have. Another point of contention are his alts; I think they can be more inspired, but I kinda like 'em.
    If being online taught me anything, it's that Sonic fans are rather insecure. They find things to argue about almost every day. I see myself as more of a casual fan of the Blue Blur. I think that he's a lot of fun across his three official Super Smash Bros. appearances.

      @HatStackMike  Місяць тому +5

      That’s awesome to hear!
      Yeah, as much as I would have loved another Sonic character joining the roster, you’re probably right that that’s where some of the saltiness comes from. I’ve seen a lot of Sonic fans online being quite angry about that, especially Shadow not being an Echo Fighter.
      As a pretty big Sonic fan myself, I know what you mean all too well about how much this fanbase as a whole likes to argue and complain about stuff, haha. It comes with the territory.

  • @RedSpeedTail
    @RedSpeedTail Місяць тому +3

    i mean, i don't dislike sonic's moveset in smash
    but my biggest complain is having both side b and down b be Spin Dash, that's the one thing i disagree the most, it feels redundant and accomplishes nothing rather than making him feel have less moves, i get it, they're slightly different, but not enough to validate both being on the same character.
    As an example, take Luigi's Tornado and Dr Mario's Tornado, they're both kinda different yes, but it wouldn't feel right if one character had both mapped at 2 different inputs.

    Sonic's Moveset is so uncreative yet it's so OP that he's the 2nd best character in the game

    A lot of Smash fans has come to the realization that it's possible Sakurai can't update movesets hence why Mario, Link and Marth is constantly recycled tho I doubt he hates Sonic? from what I can tell I believe after Melee excluding R.O.B., Olimar and Pokemon Trainer almost all new comers are either modifed versions of exsiting fighters or as admitted in Bayo case just copied and pasted if people truly want Sonic moveset to be updated then your best bet is asking for HAL labs to make the next Super Smash Bro's

    • @HatStackMike
      @HatStackMike  Місяць тому +3

      Yeah, that’s a good point that once a moveset is created for a character, it typically doesn’t change too drastically between games.
      I never thought “Sakurai hates Sonic” was ever a thing until I started seeing people say it online more and more, to the point where I felt the need to argue against it to all those random people who will probably never see this video. 😛

  • @Velocity_YT
    @Velocity_YT Місяць тому +1

    The last two reasons I understand, but the first one barely makes any sense. If that's the case, then Shouldn't Mario have a simple moveset then? Also, him having this "simple" moveset created a problem back when the pandering was a thing to the point Sonic started getting banned from tournaments all because of his moveset.
    On top of that, he doesn't habe any reps but Fire Emblem gets about 9?

    I think if the Moveset should be simple, than wouldn't it be better to use Sonic 1 (aka Classic Sonic) instead of Modern ? Yeah I think this Sonic is coming from Lost world (I can't say for sure but it is also very simple there right? ) So my thoughts is more on that matter that he would have done more but couldn't because of license issues of SEGA maybe??
