For anyone "hunkered down" in the direct path of this storm, please consider leaving while you can. I have been through every hurricane thrown at the panhandle of FL for the past 32 years, and have had many hurricane parties. I decided to stay for Hurricane Micheal, which at a Cat 5 was the 3rd strongest storm to ever hit the US. I went without power for over 2 months, and my town is still wrecked in many places. It would have been no different had we actually been bombed. The trees, power poles, debris etc.. on an unimaginable scale. Mexico Beach was literally wiped off of the map. Whole houses with multiple families inside of them were literally swept into the gulf, and since they didn't evacuate were considered suicides instead of official storm deaths. I will never forget how stupid I felt for staying, because when that eye wall hit I realized that a Cat 3 was relatively a cakewalk. Seriously, it was in such a different league, making my brick house feel like it was built out of carboard. Been through so many hurricanes but Micheal changed my entire perspective. Our neighborhoods banded together and we took care of ourselves, and eventually we got to a liveable state. Cutting trees off of our houses and vehicles, sharing supplies etc.. To be honest, it was kind of amazing to watch our communities come together the way we did. But we are nowhere near the same, even after almost 3 years since. The amount of businesses that permanently closed, the buildings that are gone, the lack of trees. There are people still living in FEMA trailers because they are still fighting with insurance companies for repairs... Everything is different here now. Worst part after the storm wasn't even being without electricity or food. It was not having any clean water for weeks, and not being able to get out of our neighborhoods, also for weeks, for supplies because of all the downed trees and power lines. The national guard showed up and was able to get MRE's and various supplies to a handful of folks, but of course it wasn't close to enough. By far one of the craziest periods of my life. It spooked the hell out of me, and I will never be complacent about a hurricane ever again. If you are able to get out then do it. This storm could end up being a cat 5 as well, but a 4 is just as bad in my opinion. Get out of there y'all. And if you stay, good luck to ya. Keep your heads up and make sure those around you have enough on their plate. Toilet paper, tooth paste, MREs and water are like gold. And if you're lucky you have a generator. Good luck to you guys. I will be sending supplies and I hope it reaches the ones who really need them.
What he said! I rode out Micheal in Wewa, about 30 miles inland from landfall. I would ride out a cat3 in a tent pitched inside a canoe before I did a cat5 again in a block building. The wind was literally so fast that tornadoes couldn't form. There were 3-4ft white capping waves in my 15 acre pond! If your lucky enough to come out unscathed your still in for a miserable month or more with no water, power, emergency services, hospitals, gas, food, building supplies, cell phones... not even the same sport as a 3 let alone the same ballpark.
I just love these people who say, "I'm just gonna hunker down & ride it out". It's like, the storm surge could be 15 feet, which is over people's heads & possibly over the roofs of most houses. I just say make sure you write your name, ssn & where you live in indelible ink, just in case if your body is found, the authorities can identify you.
@@leighannad1262 I remember that. They had a marking system to show they’ve checked the house, found nothing or found deceased. But still bodies were missed for an even longer time.
It also kind of depends on what kinds of surges you know your property sits above. Our old neighborhood was lower at the end of the road. Our house on the cul du sac was on higher ground. You wouldn’t be able to see this on a dry day, because the whole area looks flat, so no obvious hills. So you could ride it out at our house while our neighbors 4 houses down were submerged. If you know your elevation, you know how high the water would need to rise to reach your doorstep. We live in my fiancé’s childhood home. Understandable! The good news is this too shall pass. Before we know it Christmas 🎄 will be here. Praying for strength and endurance for all in this storm 🙏
They had to abort one flight that was going to gather wind speeds so I’d say our wind speed data is a bit stale and they’re probably higher winds. New flight TEAL72 will be in there in the next hour or so gathering new data.
There was a pass recently that had 95 kt surface level winds on the SE quadrant @ 955 mb with 110 kt+ Flight level winds. It'll take a few hours for that to spin down but this storm is likely already cat 3 and the conditions to strengthen will persist likely until landfall considering its moving just fast enough that it'll likely be unable to churn up the shelf water fast enough for the lack of warm deep water to affect it. Though, NAM, just a dude who watches hurricanes.
@Dark Knight even then Katrina’s landfall pressure was 920 and that’s pressure of a cat 5 hurricane still. Katrina’s landfall pressure is probably going to be lower than Idas peek pressure.
This thing is going to make believers out of everyone that disrespects it! This is a monster! The surge of water alone is enough to get my blood pressure pumping.
A lower pressure doesn't always mean a stronger wind, sometimes the windfield grows larger but it doesn't get any stronger. I'm guessing that some dry air got sucked into the core of the storm and there are gaps in the eyewall, the overall windfield is increasing in size but the maximum windspeed won't increase until thunderstorms completly surround the eye. The storm is looking pretty healthy on satelite so I'm guessing the eye will close off and the windspeed will increase shortly. However, the storm is running out of time to intensify and I'm thinking a large cat 3 is more likely than a small cat 4 at this point.
I truly hope you're right but unfortunately I believe you're wrong I believe it'll be a strong category 4 and the more it stalls upon landfall the stronger the core will initiate. Don't forget it's going to be extreme high tide when it hits. I recommend everyone and I do mean everyone get the heck out of there it's not going to be a place you want to be during the hurricane or even afterwards for quite some time.

The cone of uncertainty is a cone for a reason: there is always a chance of a wobble. Computers can't predict something as chaotic as a hurricane that precisely, although they are much, much, MUCH better than they were 15 years ago. Pretending the straight line in the middle of the cone of uncertainty is THE path is very misleading, even if it is "convenient". At this point the only reason that storm will turn into a category 4 is because it makes awesome news. It will most likely creep up the category 3, but back to category 2 again at landfall. We've survived much worse than this. I❤️NOLA!
I have seen this story over and over again every year🤦♂️Hurricanes are not disasters😲they are normal predictable powerful weather events. Where and how people build their homes is the disaster.
I've lived through two hurricanes here in Houston. You don't know what you're talking about if you say hurricanes are not disasters. People die, lives are destroyed, homes swept away. Do you even know the meaning of the word 'disaster'? There is nowhere on this earth safe from weather disasters. Your comments are insulting.
I know this is probably a controversial statement, but Ida was never a cat 4 hurricane. The top wind speed at sea level, an hour before it hit the LA coast, was 103 mph, a cat 2. The 140 mph speeds that the Hurricane Center and the media kept reporting on are the wind speeds at 5000 ft. Nobody lives there. Of course cat 4 sounds so much more dramatic and keeps everybody's eyes on the weather channel/new channels, but it is not an honest assessment of the real windspeed. (Look at the footage of the aftermath this morning: A cat 4 would rip up every roof, blow down every street sign and power pole and anything else in its way. I've seen barely any tree down. The media is straining VERY hard to make this cat 2 look like a upper end cat 4). This overhyping has been a trend in the reporting on hurricanes for years now, with potentially devastating consequences in the future. God forbid we should ever get a REAL cat 4 or 5 hurricane about to strike the US coast. People that have lived through this supposedly cat 4 hurricane will pooh pooh it next time and stay because it wasn't as bad as they expected. Crying wolf will cost lives. Do yourself a favor and check the windspeed for yourself. The Windy app is fantastic and there are many weather bouys close to the coast that measure wind. Now the rain and the storm surge is another matter. Very dangerous indeed. But don't fall for the media's windspeed drama.

Stay safe my American brothers and sisters.
I just got word my grandson is still in Mobile, won't be leaving until 6am. I'm so worried for him and all the people down there.
This storm is increasing in mass. That's the parameter that I think may be increasing as the pressure drops yet oddly the sustained wind speed hasn't increased yet
Praying for you all.
Hunkered down in Bucktown.
I'm in Gretna
Stay Safe
@@voodoochild1806 Ida starting to roll in here
@@voodoochild1806 Walked on the levee which is maybe 100 yards from where I live. Winds were 60ish mph. At my place the wind is barely moving the leaves on the ground. No rain
Im not xpert obviously im just ur humble viewer but that doesnt look like a cat 2 on 🛰 it looks like a cat 3.
Most definitely
Exactly
@@patmygroin You get wind speed from looking at a satellite image? That's quite a talent.
Looking at the eye wall, speed of rotation and millibars… it looks more like a 3. But as ichose said, I’m also no expert.
Ida is giving me Ike vibes with the way it’s being weird. Ida , Ike eerily similar in a few ways. Please be safe neighbors. Prayers from Texas.
View ocean temps at 5cm for sea surface it gains 2C/3.6F approaching the coast, I'd etrongly say to expect a Cat-3 by landfall.
Ymmv.
It did hit Cat-3, 115mph.
What's your yard look like from above?
God Bless You. You are being prayed for by millions of fellow Americans. Help is on the way.
This is just like Hurricane Andrew! This is going to blow up as it gets closer to shore!
Prayers ❤

🙏God ova all things🙏
Wow😳🙏🙏Prayers for everyone .
These folks livin here are gonna get wreked,badly....say a prayer for them
Thanks Chris for verifying my previous comment! 👍
At this point the only reason that storm will turn into a category 4 is because it makes awesome news.
It will most likely creep up the category 3, but back to category 2 again at landfall.
We've survived much worse than this.
I❤️NOLA!
People with this mindset are such a joke.
Seriously? You think storms are concerned with news ratings? Wow.
For all you haters replying just think of it as the French "we."
This guy's good.
"Get to your basement where you"ll be safe" --Joe Biden
Senile Joe will blame this on Trump
We can see Ida's eye wall is struggling.
Or maybe it’s going through an eye wall replacement cycle.
GOD HAVE MERCY!! LET HUMANITY COME INTO COMPLIANCE WITH YOU!!! CIRCUMSTANCES WILL CHANGE THRU PRAYER!!
Again, he loooves the word "again"".

Tia and your dogs I hope you are safe.
I have seen this story over and over again every year🤦♂️Hurricanes are not disasters😲they are normal predictable powerful weather events. Where and how people build their homes is the disaster.
hurricanes aren’t a disaster? school is important
Since when has the definition of disaster required something not be predictable?
Well I could see how it would be different than a earthquake as far as expecability. It is hurricane season. But a disaster is a disaster.

I hate the media.. they want this to be a cat. 4 soooooooo bad!!! Gotta get those ratings!!
Praying for everyone. Please evacuate…your life is worth more than stuff
How bad is the hurricane going to impact or cause damage to south mississippi, such as hancock county & harrison county?
On the NE side is not where you want to be!
I’ll bet it hits land, and dies. I don’t feel like picking up branches or cutting up trees.
Maybe the French Quarter will have a chance to get clean again.
& the NFL can rig 2022 Super Bowl for the Saints as well...
I don't think the Eastern movement is quite done!
It's a bloody shame we don't get anything like this in the UK lol 🇬🇧
We send a lot your way but the storms can't take the cold north Atlantic waters, sorry! 😊
You don't want this. Trust me on this
