I work for the power company. When Katrina came, our initial call was to go to Mississippi to assist. When we got there, there were no homes left on the foundations where they sent us. They then sent us to Louisiana. Had to sleep in our bucket trucks or the back of pick up trucks because of no power or as we got closer to the center of destruction, there were no more available rooms left. We finally found a hotel at 2am Just north of Lake Pontchartrain. There was no power but at least it was a bed to sleep in. We set poles for four days straight in this area. As our company was reassesing where we were to set up "base" we could only go up to the 17th street bridge because the water levels were still 3/4 of the way up the houses. It was devastating to see the damage and piled up debris that was pushed in from the shore areas. Those who had boats, left them lined up in rows at the 17th street bridge areas and abandoned them. One of the bad things about the levees/locks is they're useless without power to the pumps. During Katrina, they were working to the point of self destruction because they were basically recirculating the water once the levees were breached. Once this was known, the shore side of the 17th street bridge was isolated and we began repairs on the inland side. As if things weren't bad enough, once we were restoring power to the inland side, random houses started burning down because of gas leaks. People would up and leave without shutting their main breakers off and other utilities. This is sometimes worse because the emergency system is already overloaded and no one will come to the rescue. By the time you see it, it's too late. A house that sustained moderate damage is now a pile of ashes because of internal damages that weren't seen. Louisiana is a known low land. If something like this comes your way, it's best to evacuate if you can and are able to. It's not worth the loss. That was a bad year. I worked Katrina, Rita, Wilma and Ophelia all in a row. Having one storm is one thing. Having back to back storms in a region is another. Stay safe people and know when to leave.

I’m currently studying meteorology and atmospheric science and although I may not be anywhere close to an expert, I can tell you that what this storm is doing and it’s rapid intensification, is absolutely insane. I have never in my years of studies heard of a storm that has dropped in pressure as much as IDA. This is 2005’s Katrina all over again. If you are anywhere in central or south Louisiana, evacuate now!

OMG this is a monster :o I experienced 105mi wind gusts here in Germany during a storm nine years ago, almost got hit by a flying roof shingle. After an hour it was all over, those are tiny pins in size storms compared to those monsters with you. I hope everyone gets to safety and pray for y'all, be safe!

I have an extremely huge water oak tree that I just don't trust it. Plus, I have a live oak in the front yard. Im concerned the water oak falls onto my roof. My street does flood easily too.

@@lzrshark617 a lot mention Katrina because many were urged to evacuate and many weren't scared so they stayed out figuring it can't be worse than other past "strong" storms. That's why many were lost, killed, and trapped in the area for long periods of time with no aid. It was a devastating storm to the area and it didn't help that the levees failed so the city flooded badly.

I drove 8 hours to get to Birmingham and nah you just sound ignorant alot of people dont have the means. It cost us an easy 100 just to leave I gas and other expenses many dont have that to spare. Katrina was only a 3 when it made landfall. I live about 3.5 hours north of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and we were pounded by Katrina living that far inland. No power for 9 days!! This one is projected to go right over the top of us. Y'all stay safe!!

Scary times ahead indeed once Antarctica and the remaining ice caps are no more we can be looking at prehistoric storms. Even with our technology it's hard to even monitor how strong they were back then. It only gets worst. We currently have wildfires in every region across the globe.

Same; it's been on my bucket list of places I'd like to visit when I actually have money for years now. I was technically alive during Katrina, but was too young to remember anything, so all my knowledge of it was picked up via learning about it in school and stuff I've heard after the fact. I'm kind of wondering if this is what it felt like for ppl in landlocked states, watching Katrina bear down, bc I keep seeing ppl mention Katrina, and it feels weird
@@lzrshark617 a lot mention Katrina because many were urged to evacuate and many weren't scared so they stayed out figuring it can't be worse than other past "strong" storms. That's why many were lost, killed, and trapped in the area for long periods of time with no aid. It was a devastating storm to the area and it didn't help that the levees failed so the city flooded badly.
@@lzrshark617 that's another reason why with this storm you see so many more actually evacuating. Katrina messed a lot of people up mentally.

I drove 8 hours to get to Birmingham and nah you just sound ignorant alot of people dont have the means. It cost us an easy 100 just to leave I gas and other expenses many dont have that to spare. Katrina was only a 3 when it made landfall. I live about 3.5 hours north of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and we were pounded by Katrina living that far inland. No power for 9 days!! This one is projected to go right over the top of us. Y'all stay safe!!
