How To Make Drift Tires for RC - The RCNetwork

  • Sometimes at The RCNetwork it's necessary to get the shop tools out and fabricate things that just work! After some research on how to make drift tires for my HPI Sprint 2 and having some really odd sized wheels, I donned some eye protection and got cutting on a fresh stick of 2" ABS pipe from my local hardware store. Although I didn't take you from cut station to the router station, I give a good explanation on how to make your own.

I made this a few weeks ago for my RS4 3 Evo and they work great for low speed and fun drifting. A hard rubber compound drift tire like the HPI Super Drift A-Type tires are great once you get experience and are ready for high speed drifting. The only problem I have with the raw ABS is that you don't get enough grip for transferring but They're cheap and fun nonetheless. Also after some experimenting instead of gluing and having the possibility of not being able to reuse the rims Wrap the inside lip with Electrical tape and mount them outside rim going into the rim by pushing it down. The tape makes a very snug fit and I have 15 tanks through the tires before I had to re-adjust the tires a little bit from slipping off.

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  10 років тому

Yeah, I like the T Drifts for the places I run. The ABS tires are great practice tires and for asphalt. I was kinda forced to make these as the wide wheels on the porsche had no alternatives

the tire height difference will def alter vehicles original performance
the result will be a lower top speed but in turn initial torque will increase all depends on preference !!

What sucks is the new version with the Porsche body that's about to be released has these same wheels it looks like, and I'll probably have just as much trouble finding drift tires:-( Such a crazy wheel size, but the body looks so good.I also wonder if you could make up the offset difference with a different wheel hub.

    • @TheRCNetwork

Matthew Fant Yep, same wheels and tires, which makes doing anything different with that body almost impossible. I tried all sorts of axle ideas....

hey fella nice job on making the wheels definitely a good alternative I just thought I'd let you know if you wanted some really nice looking style I have the HPI rs4 sport 3 flux brushless it's the even wider Porsche body with the same rims and tires pretty lots of power people never beleive me when i tell them my porche swings both ways I race it as a touring car and drift for fun i dial it back with my flux programmer power level 25% and my punch level to about level 2, adjust my end steering end point then I throw on a set of HPI low profile 35 millimeters wide with a9 offset and the front I the matching rim with a 32 millimeters wide and 6 offset with matching low profile tires HPI has a whole line of the low profiles that are official licensed real wheels with about five or six different rims styles each ranging in size from 9 offset the three offset and 35 millimeters wide to 29 millimeters wide this series also includes several different types of tires for the drifting radial such as a Bridgestone Falcon and you Yokohama and they look so.bad a$$ hpi did have rubber radial m compound brimstone tires to match these rims as well but they discontinued them which really ticks me off because I'd like a set of them and I can't find them anywhere. any way I payed 26 dollars for the front and back rims and 15 for the tires off amazon there are still alot of them. drift on brother

Probably not, those cars aren't extremely powerful and this piping can add a bit of weight, also like he said, to get the tires off and fit to the piping could be quite a challenge. But you could bring your car to Home depot and see what sizes they have! could be an awesome experiment! Again it goes back to power, this is a 300$ power machine.

TuneSpecGarage the tires are custom made from ABS pipe. The wheels are HPI wheels for the Sprint 2/Sport 3 Porsche

No offence but u could just put tape round the tires 😂😂

Sure, but then I would have a $700 RC Drifter with tape on the tires....

I use duct tape to make the mudders and electrical tape for drift. And I have studded a rc car out with just screwing in 1 inch screws to keep the heads or then you have studs good traction in rougher terrain

There are much cheaper ways of doing a lot of things. You'll find as you get older tho that cheaper isn't always better. Tape wears off, doesn't work as well, and especially if you want to compete are terrible for actually practicing for real, especially if you're on rough concrete or asphalt. Sure it's okay to goof around with every once in a while, but not if its what your hobby becomes geared towards. If he decides to further progress in drifting, concidering the type of car he owns (not a cheap wal-mart car) I'm sure even he will spend a few extra dollars for some actual drift tires. As for myself, the hour it takes to research how to do this, time it takes to shop for the right pipe, time it takes to cut them, bevel them, and color them, and make sure they fit, I could just stay at work an extra few hours and just buy the actual tires.

My car has too much power for tape

Tape is garbage especially when it will fly off with that much rpm, trust me terrible idea.

..... Or if you have a 3D printer just print the tires

I would use combination of different techniques. 3D print your rims of choice to get your wanted look. ABS can be chopped and combined with it self using acetone to chemically weld the seam, if proper size pipe is not available. You can collect HDPE plastic, heat it in oven (not your kitchen oven:D maybe get small one from drift store) and press into mold. PVC has its own glues and technically you can plastic weld it with heat, but that vents harmful gasses so its not recommended.
To get best results i suggest you make a tool for your drill. Steel rod or bolt size of your car axle, drill a hole for pin to keep hub in place. Make treads in the end for nut in case of steel rod or just chop the back end off from bolt. Mount this into your drill, install your diy wheel into tool and now you can smoothen the wheel in this make shift lathe using files and rasps.
If you make stand for couple of low friction ball bearing to put the tool in, you can also balance your wheels for some extent.

Next time don't buy hpi. HPI sucks. Their cars are junk, their trucks are okay..ish, and their bodies are absolute garbage. Next time go Tamiya, Yokomo, 3racing, Losi or MST.
But, kudos on the tires. Nothing beats custom builds :)

For the car I was fitting wheels/tires to, I didn't have a choice. The fronts were +9mm offset and the rears were +14mm offset.

The RCNetwork Try using washers to take up the spacial difference. If the front axle isn't long enough, it could take some custom fabrication to the axles but it can be done. Good luck with your project. And again, awesome job on the tires. They look legit.
