- Refusing to conform to common pathway of people his age, Barry Likumahuwa took the courage of pursuing his passion in jazz music. With all kinds of musical instruments available in his house to explore and having the skills to play all of them, Barry finally chose one that he felt most in love with, the bass.
Winning one competition after another, composed, produced, and arranged songs for artists such as Glenn Fredly, Ello, and Tompi, finally Barry decided to start his own in 2008 with the Barry Likumahuwa Project and music that exudes burning passion and character. Amidst the overwhelming rules and theories of music, he chooses to rebel and instead follow the intuition of his heart in strumming his bass and composing and arranging his music, while proudly calling himself "anak jazz jalanan". A maverick in the jazz world, Barry defines and leads the emerging young generation of jazz musicians.

@@ARKAN9765 percaya deh, banyak bngt.. bnyak yg msih gatau atau ga sadar fungsi bassist di perfomance itu apa mungkin krn frekuensi bass yg cenderung rendah dan nga gampang didenger
Pernah waktu itu ikut coaching clinic langsung sama Mas Barry. Orang nya humble banget. Murah senyum. Dan yg pasti tiap dia main, soul nya dapet. Kalau ada yg bilang dia main biasa aja, ya itu opini masing2. Tp di sebuah sesi Mas Barry pernah bilang, "Gue gak suka main langsung heboh diawal-awal lagu/song kayak kebanyakan bassist. Belum apa2 udah over improve nya di awal2."
Dan yg gue tangkep, mas Barry emang demen main yg simple2 tapi "ngena". :)

yang saya liat disini bule2 cuma ngomong apa adanya yg mereka liat dan dengar, kadang relevan jg mereka bilang "he's not that good" atau "nothing special" ya karena emg tolak ukur mereka udah beda sama kita disini, apalagi yg tampil player dari negara kita sendiri pasti ada rasa nasionalis tumbuh di dada seketika ada orang yg seakan merendahkan (ya ga sih) hehe
jadi kita bs belajar thdp sesama apalagi sebagai musisi, kalau kritik dan ngomong apa adanya itu bisa mengubah mental "makan puji" orang2 sini yg berujung stagnan berkreasi menjadi musisi yg selalu belajar dan selalu berkembang
dan mereka itu kalau ngomong dan kritik ya pedes2, makanya harus diakui mau gak mau kualitas musisi2 kita dari "pribadi" ataupun "skill" selalu tertinggal diatas mereka

Lots of Jaco Pastorius and I guess it's Victor Wooten instructional video stuff in there (the slap stuff, is it someone else?). For such a snappy fast language surprised there is so much slow chordal playing. Oh just hit 16:30, native tongue coming in now.

Well in that case, that's great. I'm happy for you man. But what you said makes no sense. He's playing with technique, it's just likely not the proper technique. There's nothing wrong with learning proper technique; it can only help your playing. Not saying you have to be formally trained, although for most people I think this would help, I'm just saying good technique enhances one's playing. Hence why it is called, good technique.
I'm gonna be honest, I came here just to listen to the Bass. He plays shit music, can't even call it music. Please don't take my opinion seriously, please don't get offended.
+mrknockknock1 I guess it's not that his music is shit. I personally believe that there's nothing such as bad or shit music or even "shouldn't be called as music" thing.
Every person in this world has their own standards of good music and it can't be 100% same with other people in this world. That's why for a genre of music - for example, let's say metal - the metal fans will say that the music is super cool and really ignite their spirit. But for non-metal fans, they will say that listening to metal songs is like "listening people shouting harsh words without any meaning".
It ain't about genres dude. He has no rhythm, no sense of melody, no groove. What he plays makes me feel nothing except a little bit of constipation. I know, there are people who feel otherwise. That's why I said "it's just my opinion".

That verse is the one that removed from RSV (Revised Standard Version) Bible right..? Because the christian scholars said this verse was interpolation, fabrication, in the other word it wasn't belong to the bible, it was just a foot note but somebody put it in as part of the bible. And later on they put it back in on the next edition of RSV Bible, because many denominations demanded so... hmmm...so interesting. and they said this is the word of god.

Does anyone know what is actually said in this talk? Difficult to hear how he's 'rebelled against the rules and theories of music' from listening to his playing alone. The majority of (negative) comments are from what I guess are native English speakers (like me), only able to judge the playing and not the wider context.. whatever that might be..
A year too late but let me explain. It means that he doesn't follow the rules of how music should be played and decided to do it anyway he likes. If what's the most common is how a bass player should be in the back and unnoticeable, he made a group where the bass player is the lead. Hence the world "rebels".

good motivation ... dukung terus musisi indonesia ...
he plays good. no doubt about his masterful skills. But the purpose of bass guitar is to give a beat to the music. The sound he is producing could be produced by other type of guitar on easy way. :) Just a thought!

The "purpose of bass guitar" is the same as any other instrument. It makes pleasant or otherwise moving sounds. How those sounds are used is completely up to the artist or composer, which was the whole point of the TED talk.
MrKimchiNinja Drums only need to supply the beat. No need to get tricky. See what I did there? That's a painfully ignorant view of what musicianship is about.
As to the first comment, the specific tuning, tone and techniques used in the bass arrangement he provided are distinctive to this instrument and would require some considerable tweaking to duplicate on a guitar...but, then again, why would you want to?
He just turned the bass into a lead instrument. Come on its awesome. And I play guitar no way that sound is coming out of my guitar without tuning it way down, and it still won't sound like that.
