I had the privilege of spending a day with him many years ago. When he signed for Spurs his wages were £12.50 a week and £25 a goal. As for the 66 world cup he told me the reason he did not playmany games was Ramsey hated him. He will always be in my greatest players I ha e ever seen.
Greaves was a world great and Johny Giles was A terrific player to. A pleasure to have seen the likes of Jimmy Greaves and the skills and toughness of Giles!
Despite all Jimmy's heroics on the pitch, his greatest achievement was staying sober since 1978. A wonderful example for the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. RIP Jim.
He was nervous about going to West Ham because of their drinking culture. Should have gone to Derby coz Clough wanted him. Imagine how many more goals he would have got for them. RIP.
Great description by Johnny Giles but he was wrong re; 66 WC, Jimmy got injured against France that required stitches in his shin and never got his place back when he recovered as Hurst came in and the rest as they say is history. 41 goals as a teenager for Chelsea who ended up mid table speaks volumes. In a world where the word 'Legend' is bandied about all too freely, it is certainly appropriate where Jimmy Greaves is concerned.
It was form ultimately. He was fit for the final but wasn't picked. He had 3 indifferent games in the group stage. If he was firing he would have got back in for the final.
Anyone interested in Jimmy - please check out The Jimmy Greaves Story. He is interviewed by Brian Moore and it's one of the best interviews I have ever seen.
I went to an Arsenal away game at Villa in the early 60's and after the match the Arsenal fans were at New Street Station. Back then the Arsenal team would often be travelling back to London on the same train; the fans were on the platform waiting for the train back and some of us had a chat with the then manager George Swindin. One chap asked Swindin about the possibility of signing Greaves for Arsenal, "He's a troublemaker", Swindin replied. Yeah, think about it, Jimmy Greaves was a trouble maker, a troublemaker for countless defences during his star studded career. Not long after Swindin was sacked and Jimmy Greaves went on plundering goals for fun, but I always regretted he never wore the red and white of Arsenal because he was regarded as 'a troublemaker.'
Just to contradict John Giles on one thing. Greaves made brilliant investments with his family when he was a player and I'm nearly certain that he was the rare example of a football millionaire before he retired
A greaT player talking about a great player Giles was the best passer of a ball I've seen geavsie played on mud heaps against defenders who would happily break his leg I would love to see Messi and renaldo survive then and score that amount of goals I think not
I think the way Bill Nicholson got rid of him was a knife in the back . Jimmy loved playing for Spurs that's why he stayed there .He was much more loyal to them than they were to him. He was never the same after that.
The best EVER, thank God l witnessed Jimmy.
Great player, lovely person, character, best ever football tv programs the Saint & Greavies.
Giles, grateful we still have him, that link to past football generations.
The greatest goalscorer of his generation RIP Jimmy

Love Johnny Giles …. Fantastic player, knowledge and insight
I'm very impressed, given his age and his "retirement" from TV punditry. To be honest, I mainly know him from the unfair Apres Match skits.
He was my hero and will allways be my hero god bless you jimmy RIP
A proper legend and best English goalscorer ever
The man had a gift.He was a true Gentleman .I am a rugby supporter but he could hold my attention.RIP
He was a great reader of the game and had exceptional intuition and anticipation.

@@stephenreeds3632 That would have been awesome had he gone to Derby.
Always had a lot of time for Jimmy.
Many fellow Scots think likewise.
I was born in 1965 and never saw Jimmy play but remember watching Saint and Greavsie, not too many memories except I really enjoyed it
Great insights from John as usual.
Jimmy Greaves, the best striker and finisher in the 60s, a time when defenders could hack you down. The pitches were a lottery. Legend.
and don't forget back passes to the keeper and the offside trap. goals used to be way harder to come by.

Absolutely correct. You beat me to it - an injury not a drop off in form.

Best player I ever saw.
Rip Jimmy Greaves.
All time top scorer in the English Top Flight.
rip jimmy

@tarquin arsenal are a small club lol
Lol. Chippy wouldn't select Kane.
Only Ronaldo & Messi have scored more goals than Jimmy Greaves from the European top 5 Leagues.
Gerd Muller..Bundesliga?? RIP both Greaves and Muller...two of the greatest ever strikers
He did win a league title - 1962 serie A
Wasn't that the 61 season?
Nathan do your history, Spurs double 1961,Fa Cup 1963, European Cup winners 1963, FA Cup 1967. Not too shabby.
This is in reference to Jimmy Greaves rip and his legacy at Spurs in the 60s.
Spurs won the FA Cup in 1962 when they beat Burnley, not 1963.
Sunderland have been champions more times than spurs
Johnny Giles is ace
RIP
Up there with law best Charlton.
Just to contradict John Giles on one thing. Greaves made brilliant investments with his family when he was a player and I'm nearly certain that he was the rare example of a football millionaire before he retired
John is a bit confused here ,Greaves lost his place through injury in 66
A greaT player talking about a great player Giles was the best passer of a ball I've seen geavsie played on mud heaps against defenders who would happily break his leg I would love to see Messi and renaldo survive then and score that amount of goals I think not
Aiden Kearney I think tottenham won the cup again in 62 I think man utd won it in 63
Gregg od correct
Probably shouldnt have stayed at Spurs for so long
I think the way Bill Nicholson got rid of him was a knife in the back .

He was never the same
after that.
@@mikehopkins4040 Nicholson made a huge mistake imo.
