I was in Xinjiang 3 years ago as a tourist from California and I saw this with my own eyes. We traveled hundreds of miles both on buses and on high-speed trains. On both sides of the road/track as far as the eyes can see were newly planted trees, both in the sandy/rocky desert and on arid hilly terrains. Trees were even planted on cliffs so steep, you wonder why they bothered (or who would be so brave). And it went on endlessly. It was amazing. I live in California and drives through the barren Mojave Desert all the time and there is nothing like that here.
I’ve never been Xinjiang, but I am very familiar with California desert. I know Central Valley was a kind of desert before, but a lot of desert in California are still no trees. Can you tell what is difference between desert in California and in Xingjiang?
Thank you for your reply. I am living in San Jose for 10 years. @@leerichard9363 I am Chinese and I am convinced that most people face religion with the attitude of rather believing in something they have than something they don’t have. Basically the firmness for these things is only about $100.
Technically, this whole large scale tree planting project is divided into three phases. First phase is for preventing further desertification in the northern border, second phase is to use forests to gradually alter the dry climate of northern areas, and only in the third phase will they finally start to plant multiple species of tree. Right now China is only at the first phase, and in desert climate majority of the tree species can barely take roots, let alone surviving long enough to grow to a proper size. There are very few tree species that are suitable for this job, and that's why the Chinese government decided to not put "multi-species" as its priority but rather the area coverage.
I just want to add that the second phase of the project, as you have said, will naturally help China increase its fresh water intake... Currently the fresh water is not enough to macro-maintain the Chinese population. This is also the reason of these river course altering projects and dams build to divert water from the humid south to the dry north.
For those who questioned our methods of anti-desertification saying that we waste too much water: I once spent 5 years in Xi'an, Shaanxi province during college years and I volunteered several times in Maowusu desert in Yulin, in the northwest of China to plant trees 🌿. I could tell you that what you said about diverting rivers to desert for tree planting is the only way we deal with desertification is totally false. We adapt the mingle forest planting techniques to tackle the desertification, which means there is a mixture of phycophyta plants, frutex plants and trees in the desert, not just trees. The order of planting these vegetations is carefully selected. You should know that the desert climate means that the water will be very quickly vaporized, so without soil to retain water, the plants, especially trees can't get enough water and will eventually die. So you can't just bluntly planting trees in the desert. Even if you drag an iceberg in the desert they will still die. So the first priority is to modify the desert and gives it the ability to retain water. The first step would be to put straws in the desert and weave these straws into little checkboxes and fixate these checkboxes in the sand to form a layout of chessboard. These chessboards of straws would help lock down the sands. Then the workers choose from phycophyta plants (e.g. algae), or herbaceous plants (e.g. grass) as per the environment of the desert to plant in these straw checkboxes. When these plants start to stretch their roots in the sand, the water will start to be retained under the surface of the sand. Then the frutex plants (e.g. Sea Buckthorn) could be planted in order to hold more water in a deeper level. At this point, we only have people carry tanks of water into the desert and water these plants every now and then. Because these plants need very minimum amount of water to survive. When these vegetations thrives and covers the whole desert, there will be a significant improvement in the circulation of water vapor. Thanks to a beign circulation of moisture, the sands could retain more and more water for trees to be planted. The type of trees should also be carefully selected, we can't use those who consume a lot of water, euphrates poplar is the best choice, as it is a indigenous plant in barren lands such as Gobi Desert in China. So the combination of phycophyta, herbaceous, frutex plants and trees will change the ecosystem of the desert gradually, and more trees could be planted to form an oasis. The irrigation relies on the water vapor circulation, water tanks or drainages. When the oasis is stable, we can get the rivers in to irrigate all vegetations, including fruit trees or other cash crops cultivated in the area. Last but not least, whether it is a propaganda or not, we Chinese succeeded in modifying the deserts. The deserts used to expand 3436km2 per year and now the deserts have retreated 1980km2 per year, which is truly beneficial for the people. There are many research institutes established in the cities near the deserts to study desertification also. This victory belongs to workers, scientists and ordinary citizens who have contributed in this mega project. This is a scientific fact that China has succeed in anti-desertification, and there is no room for unwarranted accusation since you know nothing about our methods.
Thank u so much for explain this. It's meaningful to me. ps. I agree with U about straw too even I stay in a lot of rain country but in dry season , I still use straw to cover and it's work so well.

A few years ago I visited a rural area in China's Gansu province, a region right on the edge of the Gobi desert. I saw from the highway that the land on both sides had been planted with a special grass that crawl on the ground, and my local friends told me that it was not enough to plant this grass, but also needed to put a layer of small stones on top of the land so that the grass would not be easily lifted when the wind blew wildly. @Leo Dottavio China has not been cutting down all of its own trees.China has already moved past wooden architecture, and is investing in synthetics to save the environment. The funny thing is, in China they actually designate certain roads for heavily polluting vehicles. Deforestation has been happening all over the planet. The desert? Seriously? That stuff takes thousands of years to create.
@Leo Dottavio Even if what you said is true, then you're defying logic because if in the last few decades there's been deforestation, then China is still taking more initiative to rebuild things, rather than selling things out to American oil companies which are destroying everything. You see, it's just a different mentality completely. and the other thing is, they say that the rainforests are more important to the world environment, yet in Brazil and other parts of that area, hardly any work is being done to reforest the area. So you can throw around Blame, but unless you're takingresponsibility for your actions like China has, looking at first things first and taking responsibility for your own shortcomings, your arguments fall on deaf ears. Not to mention the drug issues in those countries surrounding Brazil, for hundreds of years when China has outlawed drugs, as it already knows the hindrance on society. it's just plain and simple, if your argument about deforestation in recent years has any weight, it just simply points a bigger finger back at Brazil and other parts. within the last decade China has made far more technological advancements due to mental refinement practices. Yet in Brazil, things continued to spiral backwards. These are just simple realities and all the people in the comments section here just blaming China, when they never focus on their own shortcomings, just come across as stupid.
In actuality, much of the Amazon forest is rather young. Seed and pollen samples taken from core samples in ponds, lakes, rivers and swamps have revealed that it was once more akin to savannah. A people, possibly in the millions planted fruit bearing trees in groves and harvested crops in raised black earth mounds. When the Europeans arrived disease decimated these societies, wiping out probably 95% of the population. The managed farms grew up into the cloud forests we see today. The indigenous tribes found in these regions are the surviving remnants of this previous civilization.
I live in the most heavily forested state in the lower 48...the benefits of a large healthy forest are incredible. Just the recreational and sport activities alone are impressive but many people here make their living by harvesting and managing the forest for future generations.
When we mention improving for future generations. Trees ARE the fundamental game changer! An example: In Portugal in the 1300's!! Yep! Some time ago! By order of a wise King D. Diniz, trees were planted as a mean to control soil erosion, dunes, etc. Today we're still collecting the benefits of the did! The same King, created the Portuguese navy, who celebrated its 700 years of existence a few years ago! Many of those trees served to build the ships that sailed the world! Creating the first modern maritime empire and the global world we're living on! He also saved the Knights Templar, into the "Order of Christ"! Those became the great explorers, navigators and sea Captains, who wrote new pages of world history! Building the first modern maritime empire and the global market world we live on today! It all started with a seed! Cheers

@Ninjafish If they were called "Integration Centers" would that help you with your obvious anti-China bias? Their efforts to deal with religious radicalism seem far more humane and show greater potential of success than incarcerating radicals in the US or creating migrant "no go" areas in France.
@@dougobrien1 Migrant "no-go" areas in France? Where the hell did you hear that crap? Fox News? I've lived in France for the past 40 years and traveled a lot. There are no such "no-go" either it's zones or for migrants. By the way after the "no-go zones" snafu on Fox News the channel issued an apology and correction admitting it was complete bunk. As for China, having a deradicalization center for extremists could be legitimate. But not when it's for almost entire populations! They are not trying to stop extremists, since at least 2014 they are trying to eliminate a whole culture, religion and ethnicity, whether by force sterilization of women and forced abortions, rape by Hans (to produce mixed race children), internment of (mostly) men, torture, brainwashing, cultural suppression and a mile long list of atrocities. There are not 1+ million terrorists in a 12 million population, yet that's the number of simultaneously incarcerated Uyghurs and there's a turnover so a very large part of that population had been or still is in those camps. They are trying and quite succeeding to eliminate the Uyghur minority which are of different ethnicity, language, culture and religion. They also invented a concept of "cousin" implantation where the Chinese government forces Uyghur families to host one or more Chinese "cousins" of Han ancestry for very long periods of time (6 months to several years). The "cousins" have every right on everything and everyone on the family, especially on women. They also facilitate implantation of Hans in the Uyghur villages and cities via expropriation or repossession of the Uyghurs' house, business and land. They just want to break and destroy the Uyghurs in every way possible: no more culture, religion, ethnicity, land or language. And let's not forget about widespread forced labor and the mildly discrete pure and simple elimination of those who resist. That's the very definition of genocide. Suppressing a minority in every aspect of its existence. And before accusing me anti-China bias, read this: China has a tendency to things big, very big, often excessively. As much for the best as for the worst. Their green wall iniative against desert progression: great, wonderful! I applaud. Their push towards electric cars: great! Their education push and early foreign language learning policy: great! Tracking their own people, crushing freedom in Hong Kong and suppressing an entire minority :bad, nazi level bad. So I'm not against China as a whole, I'm against a junta of a government that thinks democracy is overrated and that oppression is a path to happiness for the pleb. I'm with the hundreds of millions of Chinese that want to able to critic the authorities, to be able to vote them out, that have no problem living in good harmony with other cultures, religions or ethnicities and that fear everyday that they'll be arrested if they fart the wrong way.
Sorry to kill the mood but actually when u grow trees you need a lot of water, where is all the water in these deserts? Well, there is not much already but the Chinese clearly think it a good idea to mess with nature so they stole all the water and fed it to their tiny shrubs now the desert is growing faster, you know why? Maybe because all the existing water is going somewhere... You know where it's going? To the thing that's supposed to PROTECT the ecosystem, these dry shrublands are not the mystical European forests you see in the video 95 percent of the clips in this vid probably aren't even in China! The Chinese have long had a history of messing with nature and having it backfire, for example, in the Banqiao disaster they built giant dams to collect electricity from nature and tame the rivers, guess what? It failed, it failed horribly even after 陈惺 whistle blew the incident he was kicked of from the project, not one.. but twice! Then nature struck back causing the dam to collapse in 1975 and killed 240,000 people! Not really, they have done similar projects in US many times. If any one knows about "The Dust Bowl" the US suffered a lot because of it in the 1930s and 1940s. They created a lot of programs, government agencies, private land owners partnership etc. "In many regions, more than 75% of the topsoil was blown away by the end of the 1930s." from wikipedia. President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated the Great Plains Shelterbelt by 1942, 220 million trees had been planted. That is about 80 years ago.

Interesting NASA photographed the region and has confirmed the changes in landscape.
For those who questioned our methods of anti-desertification saying that we waste too much water:
I once spent 5 years in Xi'an, Shaanxi province during college years and I volunteered several times in Maowusu desert in Yulin, in the northwest of China to plant trees 🌿.

The local government has special projects to control the desertification and consolidate the soil. I saw from the highway that the land on both sides had been planted with a special grass that crawl on the ground, and my local friends told me that it was not enough to plant this grass, but also needed to put a layer of small stones on top of the land so that the grass would not be easily lifted when the wind blew wildly. Yes, further desertification should be stopped but converting deserts into forests is pure bs.
Eg: Sahara desert has it's own significance. Dust from sahara is the reason Amazon forests survive. They have already started this "planting trees" in a desert area which never had any forests within 600 years which would have vanished bcoz of anthropogenic actions.
Meanwhile Brazil : let's cut The Amazon, what could go wrong
...
@Leo Dottavio maybe because a large civilization in china has existed there for thousands of years while being for more advanced then brazil until a few centuries ago and that china has been united for much longer and they have a much larger population yet not much larger of a size and there are large deserts in china wheras brazil is most rainforest and forest

They can't even keep their buildings from falling over, let alone building a nuclear plant without the cheap corner cutting that defines china. They'll almost have no choice but to keep burning coal until they have the infrastructure to go mostly green.
@@WhatIsMisophonia they are currently rebuilding lots of old buildings into good quality new ones, but this takes a lot of time to do this in such a large country and you have to get people to move out, and those forced to move out get greatly compensated financially making some people even hope to get forced to move out.
I wish western media would also report about this but I can't even find much of those information on google. people don't understand that you can't change an entire country in one day, it happens overtime and politicians and corporations outside get angry cause china wants to stop being the cheap market for everyone and also ascend to good quality standards, unfortunately this will have consequences on the prices in the west therefore they try to talk china down with lots of propaganda but they don't even understand that they are making china even angrier instead of giving up
@@Gigakiller1 Holy crap there's so much wrong with this... China undercut it's own currency on purpose to sell goods cheaper than everyone else so they could corner the market on... everything, really. Now that they have the market, and produce shoddy goods, they'll have to keep prices low or else western money will go elsewhere. Take face masks for example; They sell them for what amounts to a penny, and hospitals keep buying them because China is willing to produce them at a loss just so that the CCP can keep hold of western investment. They don't have to do this of course, they do it because it gives them more bargaining power than other nations. Rather than investing in China, we should do the opposite because the CCP is hemorrhaging money and relies heavily on western money to keep itself from collapsing. Furthermore, corruption and incompetence is rampant in a society that values party loyalty more so than good workmanship, hence the reason why even newly constructed buildings are falling down, not just older ones. The problem with China isn't that its big, heavily populated, and old; The problem is that it's run by a communist government.

@Ninjafish If they were called "Integration Centers" would that help you with your obvious anti-China bias? Their efforts to deal with religious radicalism seem far more humane and show greater potential of success than incarcerating radicals in the US or creating migrant "no go" areas in France.
@Ninjafish still better than us camps
China is not at all as the west portrays it, very nice and harmonious as a whole.

It failed, it failed horribly even after 陈惺 whistle blew the incident he was kicked of from the project, not one.. but twice!
