Golf Cart Conversion Yamaha G22 Electric to 7HP Gasoline

  • Electric motor failed in my G22, so I converted it to an electric start gas engine. The mod utilizes #35 chain drive with a centrifugal clutch, and go-cart transmission. Whole conversion cost about $250, including engine! Sold the controller and motor for almost $1000, and kept the 6 batteries for my off-grid system. Win/win... never looked back! LoL

    Would like to see more about your drive system, sprockets, brackets, etc. I am about to do what you did as my batteries are shot and has been sitting a few years. Good Job!

    I used the same trans on mine except I used a torque converter clutch and belt. Then a #40 chain to the rear end coming from the trans. Awesome job!

      @bostonmountain  7 років тому

      Chris, yes, that #35 chain that I used is a little light for the job, but still working. The only thing that I have had an issue with was the clutch. I had to put a replacement clutch in because the centrifugal clutch sprocket wore down very quickly, on the inexpensive Chinese clutch. I like your approach better, with the belt-drive and torque clutch, because that is where all of the stress is in the system, as you know. Way to go Chris!

      what transmission is that ,i got a ez go cart that im converting to gas and what did you do to connect it to the the rear end where the electric motor went ?thanks i need ideas!!

    • @bostonmountain
      @bostonmountain  7 років тому +1

      It is easy... I just used an angle grinder to carefully grind down the splines on the differential input-shaft. That way I could just slip a chain-drive sprocket over the shaft, and JB Welded it in place (as well as tightening the set-screws that came with the sprocket.)

      I'm with on on that torque converter call! I am going to be switching over to that myself. The centrifugal clutch works for flat-land applications, but if you need to go slowly, and need power, the Torque Converter is the only way to go... and for just a few dollars more!

    Yeah I picked up my torque converter kit on eBay for around $65 new. Performs flawlessly. Fits right on the forward/reverse trans too.

      Brian Matheny I actually bought a torque converter kit on eBay. But then I found the f/r trans on aliexpress and ordered it too. The pulley ended up fitting the trans perfect. Email me at 89mirageman@live.com and I'll send you some pics.

    This is the first build that I have been able to find where the forward and reverse still work. I myself am not mechanically inclined. can you provide more info on how you did that. I have a club car I just started stripping down to start my build

      @bostonmountain  7 років тому +1

      Tim, thanks for your comment. I need to shoot a real video, where the exact process is detailed, but have just not had time to do it. Here is the secret to Forward and Reverse... the mech is for a Go Kart, and works well:

    • @bostonmountain
      @bostonmountain  7 років тому

      Nick, yes, that is no problem. I have not switched my cart over to the Torque Convert type of clutch yet, but I can show you exactly how I did this part, and you can just substitute the better clutch (not this centrifugal type... been through two of them already.) Thanks, and I should have that up by tomorrow night.

    I'm looking to do the same thing with my 1988 club car DS. I bought the same engine but it's the 440. I also bought the engine plate as well. Do I need to put a tension so the engine goes with the golf kart ?

    • @vintagestudioaudio1308
      @vintagestudioaudio1308 4 роки тому

      Ray, yes, a tension idler for the chain-drive is important. Otherwise, when you are going fast, the chain can slip on the clutch sprocket.

    What is your top speed?

      Top speed is fairly low... I'd say about 10MPH. I'll check those sprocket sizes for you tomorrow. Thanks!

  • @89Mirageman

    So no issues with the skinnier tires on there? I like the look of those a lot better and I'm in need of tires on mine.

    • @bostonmountain
      @bostonmountain  7 років тому

      No issues at all... here is the deal: at first I thought that by switching over to the more narrow tires, I would loose traction. Not so. In fact what happens is, the narrow tire actually puts more pounds-per-square-inch on the ground, and works well. The fat flotation-type golf cart tires are just easier on the turf, but really don't give you any better traction.

    • @chrispearson2663
      @chrispearson2663 7 років тому +1

      I figured the trailer tires would tear up the yard a little more since they're narrow like go-kart tires.

    What are the back wheels and tires from? Would there be any drawback to running those on all four corners? I like the way they look.

    • @bostonmountain
      @bostonmountain  7 років тому

      Chris, they are standard 4 on 4 (bolt pattern) rims and tires from Amazon, that normally go on small utility trailers. I have them front and back now, because I am trying to create an old Ford Model T looking rig.

    Great set up. Have you checked MPH yet to see what it does?

    • @bostonmountain
      @bostonmountain  7 років тому

      Flat-out, about 20MPH. However, you can easily change the sprocket ratios to get whatever you want/need. It was a super easy conversion, and I have had zero issues so far.

    Where did you find a sprocket to fit the splined shaft?

    • @bostonmountain
      @bostonmountain  7 років тому +1

      Chad, what I did was carefully grind down the splines with a hand-held
      angle grinder, as I had somebody slowly rotate one of the back tires by
      hand. As the splined shaft rotates, it is easy to take off each
      "spline" and make a smooth 1/2" shaft. I then used a standard 1/2"
      bore sprocket, and used JB Weld and the set screws to secure it. Works
      great... no problems at all.

    How did you put Reverse on it?

    • @bostonmountain
      @bostonmountain  7 років тому +2

      Jonathan, I put a go kart transmission in it. It is the small aluminum mech that sits between the engine and the rear axle. There is a short #35 chain from the engine clutch to the transmission, and then a separate #35 chain back to the sprocket gear on the transaxle. The forward/reverse control lever uses two cables, and I mounted it on the driver's side, right on the front of the seat box-frame. Here is a link to the eBay auction for the transmission: www.ebay.com/itm/181890531869?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

    Victorian Machines here's a quick video I threw together with a few pictures of my conversion. Shows how the torque converter setup works with the same transmission you have. I made a slanted motor plate so it would sit nicely behind the engine, this way the belt reaches. ua-cam.com/video/CQX3Kg5pcpU/v-deo.html

      Thanks Ron, it is a work-in-process. I am in the process of changing the centrifugal clutch over to a torque convert type. They are smoother, and you can vary the speed over a wider range.

    @donaldcampbell7894 6 років тому

    Yeah you said a scalded dog. That engine was maxed out and you were only doing like 2 miles an hour at best. More like. runs like a dead dog. And is that a lawnmower transmission ahead of that easy go rear ended??? The easy go rearend is like a 12 to 1 ratio with that lawnmower transmission ahead of it you sacrificed every amount of speed you could ever get. I don’t understand. Sorry.
