The drive shaft issue is called plunge. It's a thing when on race cars when you try to increase camber but it usually drives the end of the shaft into the diff and breaks mounts.
You need to put upgraded bits to take up the power of the R1 otherwise they'll keep breaking. If i'm not mistaken there's a modern kit made from billet that you can swap in old Buggies. I saw something when someone was restoring an old dune buggy on Discovery.
@@AZBADBOYz YT dislikes links in comments and they ban the comment if you post stuff (at least that's been my experience). As @ephjay bellow said, it's likely a Porsche CV (there's even a picture of the different types of CV stacked side by side, and you can see the beef between what they have and what should be). A quick google shows plenty of people upgrading their bugs with it and even a handful of buggies. So that's possibly the same thing they used in the show. Looking even further into it, showed me the time the first posts about it on forums match the time i remember watching that show on TV, back when i still used one.
I'd say shortening the length of the arms and making the shafts thicker would be a better option than having the high center of gravity it has now and it seems like the steering angles aren't right because its sliding on the turns.... I'd like to see what this would be capable of w/ trailing arm suspension on the rear, that would look really cool since it's all wide open back there. 👍
99% of the time you snap a shaft it is at the end of the spline inside of the joint. If you make the shaft larger but keep the same joints you then end up with a more concentrated stress point at the spline runout. The spline diameter is dependent on the joint so no matter how big you make the shaft the dimensions of your original failure point remains the same. @10:44 you can see that the spline pitch dia is roughly the same diameter as the rest of the bar so going any bigger would just be adding rotational mass if not negatively impacting the strength. When designing some halfshafts for the overseas Asian market we were actually putting some healthy undercuts in the middle of the shaft to comply with crash test safety guidelines and in testing we would still break at the larger diameter end of spline. Hope this wasn't to much. I enjoy learning stuff on here and thought I would extend some knowledge I have learned from designing these things for 8 years.
@@zyeborm - I feel like it would be better lower to the ground w/ a slightly narrower wheel base than what it has now... Also I think the trailing arms would look really cool, especially the way Ethan does them Ducati style/skeletonized.

Seems like you bought a show queen, that has issues actually performing. In my experience, the R1 is some quickness above 8k rpm, but under that its a total pig at low rpm. Still looks like good fun though! Id love to see you guys sneak that into a real golf course and all 4 of you guys play a round decked out in some classic golf polyester. Perhaps bring the JANK (chang li) in there too.
I'm thinking about those big paddle tires and how much more grip they will have. If it broke two drive shafts with the much smaller, and less grippy, wheels, the same drive shafts are going to fail the first time you floor the throttle. It needs stronger drive shafts before you go to the dunes.
vw cv's are pretty tough, but they fail when the are stretched or compressed. I am glad you identified that @19:45! clever work around with the PVc. I hope that helps. Sure bears a total rear geometry redesign.
@BryanBeachy could you help me design something like this? I want to build the smoothest riding golf cart possible. Possibly 4wd. I have a 40hp electric motor and batteries. But don't know where to start. I have joined some FB forums with no luck getting ideas. Thanks...
I feel like the chain ate through the chain tensioner because its a stationary tensioner. If it was spring loaded it wouldnt have as much tension on it to where it chews through it. For sure need to see about a better braking situation in case you lose the axles for some reason. Awesome purchase though! Cant wait to see the improvements on it!
If you kill more CV's see if you can find softer clutch springs to drop the shock torque on them from landing jumps etc. Could also help to squat the suspension more so the CV's are straighter. I'd use an agressive dual-rate spring setup so it's super soft on droop and stiffens up a ton at ride-height. This will also help with body roll.
What a find, it's properly fast on the sketchy side lol. Once you resolve the axles etc, you could run slightly taller tires and lower the suspension by about the same height the taller tires increased rideheight. You'll keep the same rideheight while lowering the CG and the risk for rollovers and it should help with cornering in general with greater grip and stability making it more fun to toss around. It would also help a bit with the sketchy steering (though you pointed to it needing work) since larger wheels/tires tend to slow down and soften steering response a bit though they may increase steering effort at higher speeds.
I thought I saw you guys at the drag races in Eagle ID. I was on my way out on Saturday and didn't think of it until I passed ya. I got to the car and thought "that looked like Ethan and Will." Love the content, jeep it up guys!

My boy was freakin out when he saw this. I built that cart about 18-20 years ago. This was the second build. The first was a little bigger. Built them forr the dunes. Modeled it off my buckshot x-5. So crazy to see that it still around and ripping.
That thing is so insane, its awesome. Y'all should bring it down to the lake of the Ozarks, we have a couple of offroad parks that opened up in the past year. That thing would slay the hill climbs.
Nice... I'd lower the seats for a better center of gravity too, since there's no batteries under there now... if possible, I don't know what clearance is there either... 😊
I noticed right a way that the front tires seemed to be plowing a little when turning sharp, hence the tire squeal we heard. After viewing the rest of the video clearly some modifications are in order. No doubt the changes will only increase the fun and safety of the machine. Looking forward to more on this new Grind Hard driving Premium golf cart !
full send omg, chain sounds stretched, add sway bars, it will reduce roll, I love how you guys fix anything... very cool. the laughing while driving, totally get it
I was definitely thinking with all that travel on the rear when it hits after jumps its causing it to bind up and with to fast of forward motion it just has no choice but to snap if possible maybe set the suspension up with some bump stops to so it can't fully extend or fully bottom out i would belive it should be a lot happier plus with alitte bit lower center of gravity will help with the front wheels not coming of the ground so easy i mean yeah it looks cool up high but is it suffice its boarder line a death trap 2 say the least plus it will help with rolling over as well means mo speed 🤨
I bought a gear box to slow down the steering on my hopped up golf cart. It goes in line on the steering shart. One direction it speeds up the steering and if you flip it over, it slows it down. My cart doesn't have anywhere near your cart's power or suspension travel, but slowing down the steering ratio really made it feel more stable.
Once you've been down a dragstrip once, your hooked. I raced motorcycles in the 1/4 mile drags in highschool. I went on a mission for my Church and the day after I got home was opening drag races so yes you got it I was there.
can use a block of wood or poly too as the tensioner, most combines use wood for some tensioners and works like a charm but eats up the chain, or jut get a sprocket that fits, plenty of space for modifying

Love that you guys went frolfing!… itd be a great video to see you guys play a round!… maybe call out the foundation guys, then take them to play on some of your toys!
I had the same CV joints problem with my 16valve swapped 84 Scirocco. It was slammed, so I raised the suspension 1" and replaced the CV joints and axles with 944, of course it's a little more involved than described but the 944 units are good for 300hp.
It’s hard to tell in the video, but it looks like your Ackerman in the front end may actually be reverse of what it should be. If so, that’d definitely create steering issues and scrub/understeer
Now that looks fun, I really recomend front brakes, I would also build a reverse system from a starter motor one way bearing on the motor and revise the chain drive as the belt tensioner will last less time than skateboard wheel does, maybe a bearing not sure maybe just a slider would be better similar to dirt bikes in the 80's used.
Love the channel guys, for the tensioner, I’ve machined small front bike sprockets and put bearings in the centre to use them as tensioner rollers for karts, Has to be something beefy as nylon or skateboard wheels just don’t last. Love the buggy though and everything else you mad bunch create 😂

You made it to Street Outlaws No Prep Kings. That's why there's no times! Saying 1 event is the same as the next is... well, I'll be nice and not say it! Wild golf cart though!
I love your videos!!! it’s amazing !!! I’m a mechanic from Germany and just amazed on the fact that something like that is even close to street legal 😂😂
A friend of mine built something very similar and decided at the begining that he didn't need a reverse but once he finished it and was driving around found that reverse was really needed. He built a small frame with a starter motor in it put a 18 tooth sprocket on it and spring loaded it so when he needed to reverse he pulled down the bar which pulled the starter onto the top of the chain engaging the teeth of the starter to the chain and giving him reverse. Pretty clever really as long as you only need to back up a small amount. The motor was wired to a switch that engaged when it was pulled down to the chain . .
Would like to see this with a tuned suspension, beefy axles, and a reverse gearbox. You guys should fabricate one or buy one from RPM gearbox. That would be sick and would be less stressful for you guys. You could just full send all the time with this death trap.

Can you please enlighten me on how its an r1 engine but does not sound like a crossplane engine? i know it was introduced in 2009, this must be an older version? I ride an mt10 so i know exactly how the cp4 sounds haha
7:17 for shadowing much 🤣😅
20:03 stiffen the rear suspension
