      My buddy is in prison for defending himself against 4 sacks of shit who jumped and attempted to beat him down thinking it would be a good time. He had a knife and fucked one of them up. No such thing as self defense in large cities. Liberals don't believe it. If you don't believe in "stand your ground," you need to go fuck right off.

      I saw him at Collier County Fairgrounds in 2008(I think). He was late, got out of his limo, drunk, throwing up walking up the stair to the stage. Played for 2 hours straight, no breaks. His wife and son accompanied him, his band was great. Never played any of his hits, all songs I’d never heard. What a great performer, a great show!!🤠

    Coe used to claim that people would always request the song about "the ghost of Hank Williams" and that he didn't know what they meant, so he decided to write it. But obviously they were referring to "The Ride" which was one of his biggest hits. Did it go over his head that the man who picked up the hitchhiker in "The Ride" was the ghost of Hank Williams, or was he just reluctant to play it because it was written by someone else? He always chased mainstream acceptance as a singer-songwriter, and brings it up quite frequently at every show, but his hits as a songwriter were performed by other artists, and his hits as a performer weren't written by him.

  • @sevinstorey4365
    @sevinstorey4365 4 роки тому +1

    Did you notice how he changed the conversation real fast when Ralph ask him about his prison experience? There was a book released a few years ago concerning several country music legends and there was a chapter concerning David Allan Coe and this writer had researched and found out that Coe had never been in prison was never on the death row and only spent a minimum amount of time in maybe county jails here and there. Also when he came to Nashville he drove a black hurst and called himself the mysterious rhinestone cowboy and did everything that he could to draw attention to himself including making up a false background story because in his words and I quote “it had worked for Merle Haggard being in prison so I decided to use it myself“, and I am definitely not taking anything away from the fact that he may be a great songwriter or he may be finding great songwriters and agreeing to split the profits with them you never know with a crazy cat like this.

    • @a.graham7979
      @a.graham7979 4 роки тому +4

      His story was exaggerated, but the fact that he spent time in prison is documented. His detractors never said he hadn't served time, but that he exaggerated the amount of time he had served. His death row story he has backed away from and clarified since the the late 70's at the latest. In his 1978 autobiography he explains that he was technically on "death row" in that he was housed temporarily in a cell alongside the death row inmates. He also claimed to have murdered a man while in prison and later claimed to have just been accused of such. There was a kernel of truth to his claims, but he never let the truth get in the way of a better story. It got him some attention but his outrageous claims and eager namedropping etc for acceptance as an outlaw led to him not really being taken seriously as an artist. It's a shame because at one time he was great. He should have let his songs do the talking.

    • @CamaroAmx
      @CamaroAmx 4 роки тому +3

      He legitimately spent 20 years in and out of prison, including 3 at Ohio State. Screamin Jay Hawkins (with whom spent a little time with in prison) convinced him to try music as a career. He also was sent to reform school at the age of 9.
      This stuff isn’t hard to find thanks to Google.
