Bass player is keyboard player Paul Humphreys, the bass is normally played by lead singer Andy McCluskey. Try Souvenir next. **fun fact** OMD appeared on BBC programme Old Grey Whistle Test with ZZ Top, who were so impressed that it influenced their use of synths for their next three albums. If you go deeper into the OMD rabbit hole, you will discover Andy's windmill dancing...
Without a doubt….Amazing! This was so out of the box at that time, I just went to watch them a few weeks ago in LA, and they still rock!!! They did play this song.
Thank you, Dereck, I appreciate you doing this reaction so much. This was a wonderful surprise. I had requested it a really long time ago on Patreon. So happy to see you react to it and that you loved it.
So you've done some OMD songs by now, but still no Maid Of Orleans. Believe me, that one will give you goosebumps, it's definitely a special song, one of the greatest of the 80s. I still get emotional everytime I hear it.
The ostinato synth pad that runs throughout 'Messages' has been used, or interpreted many times - and very well too. For starters, in 2002, the Cosmos project, from producer Tom Middleton, merged that ostinato synth together with the opening synth arpeggio from the 1983 Depeche Mode single 'Get The Balance Right' to create the intro to a dance classic called 'Take Me With U', in collaboration with vocalist Andrew Roachford (you may recall his band's 1989 hit 'Cuddly Toy'). In the very same year, Simple Minds' 2002 album 'Cry' climaxed with a Vince Clarke-penned instrumental track called 'The Floating World', which used the melodic notes of 'Messages' ostinato synth, but with a different synth pad sound. I've noticed other posts on this page mentioning other examples. It's a well worth researching topic of discussion.
The guitar and bass rhythms that float underneath the keyboard arpeggio is what really helps make this song magical. It is subtle in the mix, but it carries the song along. If you see OMD in concert, chances are they play this one early because it gets the crowd going. Usually they play it within the first 3 songs.
@@MikePaterson OMD is extremely underrated and Andy McCluskey is one of the best frontmen around. I've seen them 5 times (1988 Rose Bowl, 1991, 2010, 2017 and 2022 Greek Theater). I even saw Paul Humphreys and Claudia Brucken in the early 2000s when he performed a few OMD songs. This year's show at the Greek was as good or better as any other time I have seen them. Pretty remarkable because the band members are in their upper 60s.
well done Dereck good choice hearing the beginnings of OMD befor there World Wide smash hit of Enola Gay/ Joan of Arc/Maid of Orleans /Souvenirs & mid 80s Stuff...???? Always Start at the Beginnings......
Andy McCluskey is legendary for his dancing! Check out some live clips where he throws his limbs around, not dissimilar to Ian Curtis of Joy Division...
In the U.S., OMD unfortunately wasn't known until around 1984 or so, except for college radio. The bridge songs from disco to electronic/new wave were Blondie's "Heart of Glass" (combined disco/new wave feel) and Gary Numan's "Cars". Blondie was a disco act, but those synth swells and filtered bass gave "Heart of Glass" an electronic new wave vibe. "Cars" was so different at the time to anything else that was out by artists like the Rolling Stones, Kenny Rogers, Juice Newton, etc. It was weird hearing nightly top 5 countdowns on AM radio and hearing Cars played along side traditional pop/rock/disco songs.
I remember distinctly where I was when I heard this song I was 16 the sound was weirdly familiar because I had been fed a diet of euro disco in the gay clubs since I had been going from the age of 14 to Manchester uk. We have never had ID cards. In the merge from disco to electro I distinctly remember OMD first followed by DA DA DA by Trio and Fade to grey. Wether or not that's the correct chronological order or not I'm unsure. Try listening to something like Savage lover by The Ring as to why it's a bit of a blur.
Again I have doubts that all these reactions are true. I cant imagine that all these people never heart these huge hits, not only OMD songs. I mean in general. Sorry for bad english...
LOVE LOVE LOVE OMD… especially their early stuff ❤️
Yes , my favourite OMD track 👍🏻

I saw them for the first time back in March here in FL. It was one of the best shows I've seen in years. Just awesome!!
My introduction to OMD - what an amazing song 🎵
Get in that rabbit hole. I would recommend doing it in chronological order.
Heard it first time as a 15 year old in 1980 the day music changed forever for me seen loads of bands live but these are still the best even now

This was and still is one of my favourite OMD tracks, I like the darker sound on it, compared to some of their other tracks.
You must like Almost then 😍
Check out Georgia if you haven't already. Also one of my favorites by OMD.
@@ijustneedmyself Yes, I do. 🙂
@@joedokes9753 Yes, I know, I'm a big fan, it's a great track.
I bought this on 7” vinyl when it came out and still have it. The Album was the first album I ever bought. I still love them to this day.
This was my music back in the 80s. .still love them
OMD plays always live in 2022. New live videos are available on Internet. They have dedicated one song to Andy Fletcher.
I love OMD! I love how they always look like some Harvard students doing some music in their free time 😄
I had already forgotten how much I liked that tune.... love it! This son is So OMD!!
I can't believe you haven't done their very first song, ELECTRICITY, a song that was influential to many musicians
We have been able to see OMD live three times in Houston recently! They are SO good live… Don’t miss them if they’re in your area.
Thank you Dereck - you said it best, this is music!

Merci Dereck...
Électronique spectacle....
Bientôt Jean-Michel JARRE fabuleux tu vas adorer...
Yes. Love the synths! So glad you liked it. You didn’t like one of my favorites from them. This one is up there.

They are brilliant live, aren’t they!

love this track!
Next by them ‘Souvenirs’: way more radio friendly
1980 is EARLY. OMD is and was beyond trends.
Look in to the story of how they made the main loop for this song, it's quite incredible
Indeed.
you would have loved the 80s @Dereck
This song is my ring tone on the phone. It's perfect. Starting slow, and if I don't hear the phone at first, it then screams at me!
My big sister got the 7" of this when it first came out, loved it and the b-side "Taking Sides Again". OMD's best years for me are roughly 78-83.
Bought loads of records but OMD was the very first CD i bought in the 80s. Love them
Saw them Live in March at the Royal Albert Hall in London and they are amazing Live.Dont know if you caught them on there recent US tour.

You got to see omd live. Amazing band. Try listening to a song from 1991 called Pandoras Box. You will love it.
One of the best bands out of Liverpool, always great live, try Stanlow and Maid of Orleans
Top Band 👍
It still sounds great and fresh after all these years. It would be a cool mash up with Berlins The Metro or Pleasure Victim...
OMD are genius guys...plenty of material to check out, you often see the keyboard player Paul Humphries playing with other bands he is that good
I love OMD... They were influenced by Kraftwerk.
Yes! Also Alphaville
Check out Pandora's Box by OMD!!!Great song!!
Back to New Wave ✌🏻
For me this song was ground zero of electronic music. There was disco in 79 and this in 1980..

Please react to Electricity by OMD.
Do a first reaction to the Misunderstanding by OMD. It will blow your mind.
Have you played souvenir by omd ? If not please do.
When you realise how they actually made this, it was literally groundbreaking music at the time. Nowadays it's easy. Back then not so much.
Hi derek can you put the subtitle?
Listen to Modern Talking- lucky guy (tocata 1984). That's good song
