Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at "ENOLA GAY," by OMD a PATREON request saying I should check this band out. I'm glad I did! OMD just shows how much a SYNTH can be smashed. It's the sounds that win this for me.

Enola Gay was the name of the aeroplane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, this song had huge significance as it was a reminder of what could happen again as us who grew up in the 80's spent everyday being scared many petrified about the super power tussle between The USA and The USSR sparking a worldwide nuclear war. There were programmes and adverts on the TV almost everyday as to what to do in the event that it would happen and the 4 minute warning of annihilation.
Well said. You beat me to it. It's a great track still even today.👍🏼
Enola Gay was also the name of the mother of the pilot, as he named the airplane after her!
@@oehoedeuil8975 yep, one of those things you can't really not know about if like me you grew up at the time or have knowledge of all that was happening at the time.
@Penderyn and men.
@@oehoedeuil8975 It was the name of the plane! The line 'proud of her boy" was referencing the name of the bomb.
Now you need the haunting "Fade to grey" by Visage :D
And, Mind Of A Toy
I was just about to write the same post.
Yes !!!
I told him to months ago 🕰
Hmm... Then he gotta hear human league - being boiled first 😉👌
Please more OMD, they have a huge catalogue: Maid of Orleans, Secret, Dreaming, Locomotion, Talking loud and clear, So in love, If you leave, (Forever) live and die, Sailing on the seven seas and more. And congratulations to 70,000 subscribers, awesome! 👏
So in Love is my fav of theirs. :)
So many great songs!
Absolutely do 'so in love' awesome
She's leaving from A&M
“Dreaming”, “Forever Live and Die”, “We Love You” amazing songs and any other OMD song for that matter!
These guys were keyboard geniuses. It's musical heaven with lyrics describing nuclear annihilation. Great voice. Both guys in the group could sing. They were cutting edge, still are.
"Living on the Ceiling" or "Waves" by Blancmange
"Temptation" or "Crushed by the Wheels of Industry" by Heaven 17
Anything, literally, anything from It's My Life and either "Today" or "Talk Talk" from Party's Over from Talk Talk.
Just for shits and giggles, something more modern from Imogen Heap, "Goodnight and Go", "Headlock" and "First Train Home"
Another shout out for Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry is a great 80's song
Definitely Waves by Blancmange. Fantastic song.
There are so many amazing OMD tracks. They were real innovators and used a lot of sampling and ‘weird’ sounds. This is a straight up pop song, except they always had unique lyrical content. Try Souvenir, Joan Of Arc (both versions), Electricity, Messages. Great melodies.
He will love Yazoo, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Erasure
@@resireg All of whom were influenced by OMD.
I saw OMD live in 1979 in Sheffield England. They were supporting Gary Numan on his National tour and the whole event was epic!
Souvenir by them
Souvenir is really a beautiful song too. Very atmospheric
J'adore ce titre aussi 👍
Yes, but its a bit boring...
Welcome to the wonderful world of OMD. They began creating what they thought was experimental music, but their melodies and popularity made them Electro Pop pioneers!
Massively influential band.
As someone who was a teenager during the 80s and still loves all this music now that I'm in my 50s, it is great to see a younger generation appreciating this music!
In the early to mid 80s ww3 was a real possibility and there were some awesome songs about it lol
"Russians " by sting
"Dancing with tears in my eyes" by ultravox
"99 red balloons" by nena
"Two tribes" by frankie goes to Hollywood
"Always the sun" the stranglers
Add to that list Alphaville's "Forever Young". It includes the lines "Are you going to drop the bomb or not?", "let us die young or let us live forever", "the music is played by the mad men" (which I think is a reference to the M.A.D. doctrine (Mutual Assured Destruction)).
I always loved the line "Russians love their children too"
Enola Gay the Plane that dropped the Atomic Bomb Great synth Band. You will love them
A true classic.
1980... it's like the opening theme of the decade.
Again: try „Maid of Orleans“ by OMD. You will love it so much
Just watched this again - seeing your smile grow broader and broader as the intro layered up was infectious - this must be one of the greatest synth-pop intros of all time :-) - and then they sustain it....
Finally OMD!!! :)))
OMG OMD
Went on an 80.s cruise couple of years ago OMD were amazing ..and got to meet them
The synth riff on 2:33 is based on the armonic progression F, Dm, Bb, C and it is one of the most beautiful melodies that I have ever heard.
Spot on!
My god, this has just took me straight back to my teenage years.
Iconic.
It would have been Malcolm Holmes on the drums back then. I've seen O.M.D. a couple of times live and had the great pleasure of meeting Paul Humphreys. If you get the chance to see them live, Dereck, then definitely do so - you'd love them. They're one of the very, very best bands I've ever seen live, right up there with Ultravox.
Oh, and Ure is pronounced 'your'.
Remember dancing to this in the clubs . This was one of those 80s anthems
One to look at too: Talk Talk with Such A Shame, The Dum Dum Girl, Talk Talk, Life What's You Make It, It's My Life to name a few. Or some of Howard Jones work like Hide & Seek, Like To Get To Know You Well, What Is Love, Look Mama, Life In One Day, Things Can Only Get Better.
yes! dum dum girls ! "in my head"
A New wave diamond
There’s absolutely no doubt that this is my favourite New Wave song. It’s an absolute masterpiece!
OMD ruled the airwaves and dance clubs in the 80s----such fun to dance to-glorious memories---Dereck majestic is a perfect word to describe OMD
Really think you should do their "Maid of Orleans" next. I'm pretty sure you will love that one even more.
I would recommend Souvenir by OMD too .. a beautiful song .. also Christian by China Crisis
Its was mal Holmes on drums in the 80's, stuart Kershaw didn't start doing drums until Sugar Tax the 90's album. You should check out OMD's last two albums Punishment of Luxury and English Electric brilliant albums from a brilliant band. Glad you have discovered them. Need to check out Souvenir, Maid of Orleans, and messages three incredible 80's songs from them.
OMD. Souvenir, If You Leave, Forever (Live and Die). So many hits. Definitely part of the 80s sound. They released a song in 2012 called “Don’t Go” that sounds like it was released in the 80s (unlike other modern songs that claim to have an “80s feel” but sound nothing like it).
Hi dude!!. You bring me back to memory lane!!
Great classic!!
Still feels fresh to this day!!
Liked your reaction!!
Ha Ha your reacting to all the bands from my era in London ! LOVED IT !!
One of the best synthlines of all time!
Two other huge hits from OMD: Electricity (their first hit), and Souvenir... A lot to dig, but those 3 are the "most popular..."
(Might want to check Nada Surf's Popular when thinking about being "popular" :) ).
Derek, YOU are a synth guy ... and I LOVE it :-)
Lol he really is. It's highly amusing 😆
Sweet! Just discovered your channel and I’m loving your choices. OMD! This is one my favorites. First reaction I’ve seen of this song. Thanx!
OMD have some amazing songs
Please react to - Pandora's Box, We Love You, Dreaming or If You Leave
Great. Now you got me all nostalgic thinking about my other favorite OMD songs; Souvenir, Live and Die, Secret, and Dreaming 🥰
So great that you've discovered OMD. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to react to all their 80's tracks! x PS: Also check out "The Sash Remix" of this from 1998 - it's got a very haunting voiceover that sent shivers down my spine when I first heard it!
Good recommendation and reaction. This was the first OMD song I ever heard and when I realized what the song was about I always felt guilt whenever I would start moving to it and still do to this day, because of the subject matter. But, can’t deny the awesome synth work. Dereck, I find it interesting that you mentioned a couple of times you were reminded of Midge Ure listening to this song. While Midge did have success as a solo artist (more so in the UK), he’s more associated with Ultravox, the band he fronted who were making their mark on pop music during the same time as OMD were and they kind of had parallel career paths. OMD had more success this side of the pond simply because of their US #1 mega-hit “If You Leave” which was in the “Breakfast Club” soundtrack and gave them exposure they probably would not have gotten otherwise. But Ultravox (with Midge Ure) did have success in the US thanks to MTV heavily featuring their videos for “Reap The Wild Wind” and “Dancing With Tears In My Eyes” (both brilliant). So, good catch by you, and good ear as well. I can’t not give a recommendation now LOL 😂 . There is a song by Ultravox which is a little more obscure, but, I think you’d be impressed by called “White China”. The single version is good, but, the extended version or the “Razormaid!” version kick!
I have Malcolm Holmes and now Martin Cooper's autographs, 2 of the original 4 member's.
I always listened to this song focused on the lyrics and what they meant, but watching your reaction has reminded me of how fantastic the music is too! Thank you matey! X
I think this one of the most perfect pop songs ever written
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ... that's all my teenage
love!! one of my favorite group in the eighties with depeche mode
Tears for Fears please !
Yes! Shout!
OMD were the original synth-pop duo. Tears for Fears have cited them as an influence.
Omg I was so waiting for this episode
70.000 abonnés !👏👏👏
Merci!!!
@@DereckReacts Oh you wrote in French! lol ☺
OMD was the great group in the 80s.
This kiss you give is never ever going to fade away.
that music is older, you can still listen wuaoo
At last Derek you do my favourite band. I've got tickets to see them as soon as covid allows tours to be rescheduled. I hope you have time to listen to more OMD. Some weird stuff, but plenty of brilliant songs.
4:33 "It's like all the instruments are having sex". 🤣🤣🤣😭😭
Just watching you react to this has brought a smile to my face! This was never going to be a hit in the States, but it was OMD's first sizeable UK success, reaching number 8 in UK charts towards the end of 1980. It is still one of my favourite OMD tracks - and I'm sorry to break it to you, but "Organisation" is how you spell the word on our side of the Atlantic...
I don’t understand why it wasn’t a hit in America
I was so lucky to live through the 1980's, the music was so awesome!
Mate, dont wait for your patreons, trust me.... synth heaven is as follows
Visage - Fade to Grey
Ultravox - Sleepwalk
OMD - Electricity
Duran Duran - The Chauffer (be careful with the video, tad naughty)
Tears for Fears - Suffer the Children
Soft Cell - Bedsitter
Cocteau Twins - Those Eyes, That Mouth
Kraftwerk - The Model
The Associates - Party Fears Two
Just as an opening gambit...I dont mean to sound so forward, but I honestly believe you'll love these tracks because every synth track you've loved so far, so have I...and for heavens sakes, ABBA, My Love, My Life , simply can't believe you've played it yet...again apologies for being so forward. Cheers
Wauwwwwww! What a memories of the eighties. And your comments are great. Please check Tears for Fears with "Change" or "Suffer the Children" or "Pale Shelter". Thank you so much. I love your
enthusiasm.
This came out when I was a child. I have four brothers and every time it came they individually recounted to me that it was about the first plane to drop the atomic bomb. Each of them said it every single time it came on, I heard that story a million times from them.
'If you leave' by them is awesome. The way you love synth-pop, have you listened to the 'Godfather' of synth, Gary Numan? Please check him out, from the late 70's, through the 80's and putting out new amazing music to this day. If you start with 'Are friends electric?' and 'Cars', I'm sure you would be onboard.
When the drums kick in it's sound of the propellers starting on the plane.
Finally! Awesome. More OMD, please.
Seen them many time and off to see them again in Cambridge in November 2021,can't wait
Actually Mal Holmes was the drummer at the time. He had to step down in 2014 or 15 due to a heart attack sadly. He's doing ok now though. So they brought back Stu Kershaw to play drums, Stu had a previous spell with OMD in 1993. He and Andy then went onto found the girl group Atomic Kitten.
What a glorious slice of yummy 80's pie! Always loved this one. Btw, the way to pronounce Midge Ure's surname is easy - it's exactly like the word "your".
Love the early 80's. This, joan of arc , maid of orleans, souvenir , quality songs.
His voice and their romantic and sometimes sad songs are an unbeatable combination❤
Thank you for another great video reaction!✌
Check out their album The Pacific Age, it's my favorite 💜🎶😍
Did a FLAME OF HOPE by OMD fan edit on my channel to footage from a little known Canadian movie; song from Pacific Age album. 😶😁
An absolute masterpiece.
OMD is easily overlooked ... but why? Glad people like Dereck brings these wonderful songs to the front. Although that sweater vest and tie in the video needs to go ... ugh 🤣
It’s OMD look. Only fans know.
Maybe it is the embarrassment of the lead singer starting and writing for Atomic Kitten ;)
Love your reactions and how informed you are into the details.
The only thing I would say, as a negative, is .. play the song entirely and enjoy it! and put the info you have of it, before or after the song is done.
I always want to dance and sing with you, but these pauzes kill my vibe :(
If you want something different to 80's new wave or pop.. look into hardrock/glamrock from the 80's!!!
This song was one of my top list in the 80's...
It stills in the top actually 😅
Yes ma'am.
Check out OMD - Native Daughters of the Golden West
You should do some songs by The Human League. "The Things That Dreams Are Made Of", "Love Action (I Believe in Love)", "Open Your Heart" and obviously their big global hit "Don't You Want Me". All from their 1981 album Dare. I know you'd love that group, and their music. 80's synthpop/new wave heaven.
"It's 8:15, and that's the time that it's always been".
This is referencing the fact that the bomb was dropped at 8:15. When it exploded, all the timepieces (watches, clocks, etc.) in Hiroshima were frozen at 8:15, and never continued ticking.
This video I loved that music 🎶
Oooh yeah.. Early 80's Baby. New Wave Synth Pop Rock British Cold wave and stuff.. God bless the 80's. BTW (wikipedia sucks..) they don't only use a drum machine but also accoustic real drums. 🙂 Love From France!
we call the synth pop of the debut of the 80's "New wave" if you want one of the best singles of this period listen Yazoo "don't go" or New order "blue monday".
Two bands influenced by OMD.
Hymn by Ultravox! ;-😁
Absolute mood-changer 🥰
This is an excellent way to get younger people interested in events that have historical significance.
You' re right, this is one of the best music of the past century that you can still listen with joy.
If you loved it, i'd like to ask you to make a react video on another excelent OMD title: Maid of Orleans.
You would make me so happy to see you on this one.
I really like your work.
Dreaming..one of their best arrangements..👍🏼
If you want to check out more songs by OMD, Maid of Orleans or If You Leave would be next!
Messages
Souvenir
Joan Of Arc
Maid Of Orleans
Telegraph
There's way more, they're a rabbit hole.
This track does not feature a vocal chorus That is kind of strange and makes it so specific. SYNTHPOP HEAVEN ;)
Please do watch more OMD asspecialy Maid of Orleans, Souvenir and Dreaming 🙏
Pleass react to IF YOU LEAVE by OMD also your gonna love this also from the Movie PRETTY IN PINK! @DerekReacts
You definitely get the hooks of the 80's. Great to see an appreciative reaction.
One of my favorite synth pop Hits of the time great analysis love you
Enola Gay by OMD along with Forever Young by Alphaville were known as the "New Wave Anthems"
You're entirely right - the mix of acoustic and electronic music at this stage was magical. Alchemy of the highest order.
I can’t believe you’ve never heard of it before ! Must be fantastic to hear it for the first time !
The last name of Midge Ure is spoken like "you're".
And I second the request for more OMD and especially for Maid of Orleans which will make you fall in love even more with them.
In my eyes they are the true synth giants of the 80s, together with Depeche Mode and maybe also Human League (especially their early stuff)
Andrew McCluskey + Paul Humphrey! 🤩🤩🤩
Great band, part of my growing up in the 80's,I was 14 in 1980. Yes I'm old! Lol
World class !
Their new stuff is equally as fab too, check out 'the punishment of luxury' and 'isotype'
Well said. One of the few 80s bands who aren't just resting on their laurels.
Seven Sea's was my favorite
Try some Nitzer Ebb or Front 242 & Bel Canto or Cocteau Twins. I think you'll enjoy these synth indie bands from the 80's. Love your excitement!
