Finally caught up on all your videos. Also I have exciting news! I bought a boat! 1973 Yankee 26. I can't wait to take her out. Your videos are incredibly informational and motivating. I can't believe I took the plunge.
Thanks this is almost my boat (minus the bad deck etc ) but is is nice to see another whitby or Brewer 42 and how similar they are. I’ve only seen mine and one other
Thanks for the effort you both put forth to show us these boats. As a landlocked sailor I enjoy watching each video. And, your honest opinion is valued! Looking forward to your announcement!
I personally want to see more boats like this from your channel. My wife and I and our two kids are going to be making the leap soon and the 40' monohulls are very appealing to us. Thank you for your take on this boat!
Oh yeah its a nice boat, you need to become more aware of what you are looking at. Comment on the "water damage" you (I) see.. look behind electrical panels under and in the bilge, chain plates and fastenings on the hull, is their water ingress etc... Btw...whats the age of the rigging and condition of the sails?
That's nothing I seen guys price these boats at 180 kand well over a hundred with nothing special about them I've seen them many well over 100k with nothing special added and some of these are 45 years old, blows my mind.
As commented, good overall classic CC design. The boat has been offered to me two years ago but I didn’t even wasted time to go down there and bought a Contest 43CC at double the ridiculous asking price of this wreck. Very poor shape that shows that even the original building quality and materials were very poor, just by looking at the hardware and fittings, wood used etc etc. . For someone that wants to burn years of DIY (even at a cost of $50K/year) and at least $100K, this boat may be worth $5K. But for $105K anyone can find a way better build, much newer in close to perfect shape and have life...
So about 1/4 into the video I wrote what I thought the asking price was before digging into the description. I jotted down $60k knowing that was way over what the boat was worth from the condition, but sellers of boats like this are pretty unrealistic. When it the tour was over, I checked to see how much; $80k(?). They're are nuts to be asking that. Standing rigging needs to be replaced, all deck hardware rebedded, deck fiberglass needs sanded/faired/painted, non-skid, all running rigging, complete re-fit below, all new electrical, Engine work ($$$$$$$). And that's just a quick thought. This is more than a severe project boat, that worth $15K on a good day and 3 years to refit. There's potential but a huge cost of man hours and capital.
Man I was just looking at this boat online and found this vid. Love this Brewer design and layout, wow. Surprisingly her Motion Comfort rating is a slightly lower 32.. and she has a Scheel Keel. An in-boom furler would be around $20k new and might just explain the higher asking, as would the two primary *electric* winches if I have that right! Mint condition this is a $150k+ blue water cruiser.
It would take $80,000 to get it where it needs the be if you did all the labor yourself. May as well get that mint boat and save your back and stress .
I really liked the layout of this boat. Lots of headroom and large heads. I particularly liked the wine locker and table setup. While the V-berth was rather small, the aft cabin made up for it. The galley, setae and nav station are all well set up for the boat. There's lots of storage and a LARGE engine room that would make maintenance a breeze. This boat has lots of potential, at the right price. There however is the pinch point. At 80K, it's not worth the time and effort to refit this boat for comfort. With all of the work this boat needs, an offer of 20K would be generous. 10 to 15K would be a better price for this boat. That way for a price of about 35K, including the price of the boat, you could have a beautifully refitted boat and be cruising in style.
Hi Daniel, interesting, I was thinking $20K but.... you may be right. I'm guessing there is a lot of hidden problems with that boat that will drive the refit/restoration cost to the sky. Nice boat however, if you can get it at the right price and have the time/resources to complete the project.
@@captainbob406 That's what I thought. With some sweat equity put into the boat (read DIY) it could be very affordable. I personally am a hands on type of person and like to do my own work where possible. If someone were less of a DIYer and had the work done... Well, let's just say they would need rather DEEP pockets and would be better suited buying a new boat instead.
I disagree with your 15 to 20 k fix this boat needs total refit you could spend 50 k easily on this one whats the old saying owning a boat is like standing in a shower and ripping up 100 dollar bills. This boat is a prime example of that
@@rickydee5863 I think that analogy is racing yachts and it is several decades old now. It is true, you could spend 15-20 in a flash on a very well maintained boat and would likely spend more than that on a new one.
I all fairness, Ben was preparing to clean the aft head which would have brought the value up to $80K. Thank you for doing the brokers job for him, lol. Maybe worth $20K, plus two to three years of restoration and much, much more $ spent before trusting this one to an ocean crossing. Great tour btw :)
Attention sail boaters: The market for new sailboats decreases by double digits almost every year for the past 12 years. Fewer people are getting into sailing than ever before. The statistics are published monthly in Soundings, Trade Edition. There are lots of project boats out there you can get for a song. Craigslist is filled with them. I often have people try to give me sailboats but I don't want to be married to a boat project. But for you dreamers, there are some real cheap deals to be had if you look around at craigslist and local boatyards. Marinas often have them cheap too, when they have to take legal action against a boat/owner for dockage owed. Boats are sometimes simply abandoned in marinas and it may take months and hundreds in legal fees to get title and dispose of the boat. Walk the docks and boatyards and ask around. You might be amazed at what you will find. However, I started flipping boats at age 15 (I'm 67 now) and have found that often the most expensive boat is the one you get for free.
@@brettkramer I have never seen a marina put a sticker on a boat until they begin legal proceedings to force payment or gain title. Even then they rarely sticker a boat for past due dockage. Notice is usually handled through registered mail and publishjed legal notices.
@@edwiser3547 Good to know, thanks. New to boating so just thought I would ask. I live in Chicago, where they "sticker" for many things, it's common here.
I'm not a sailor but if I was going to get a sailboat, I love the center cockpit set up. Mostly because you can have extra privacy and when sailing your at the pivot point of the vessel instead of being at the end of a large floating stick get whipped around. I was curious about what the empty tanks were used for; water, sewage fuel? And why would they be left open? The storage on this vessel was pretty good. The wood work I think could be done one panel at a time. Then remove the completed panels and do the frames. What would you price this boat at? I was shocked at the price of vessels. It seems they are either not worth much or it's out of the ball park. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
Excited to see the next video. Thanks for the boat tour(s)...always interesting. Loved the Baba 30', nice to see a well maintained 35 year old Florida boat!
Someone was not being realistic about pricing. Looks like the boat has been ignored. That teak in the cockpit is a mess..good video.. I can almost smell the mold
Exactly what I was thinking from what I thought going by some of there other walkthroughs hell wouldjust about be expensive if it was here in nz. Nice design though
These boat showing videos would be better if you found boats that were actually a decent deal. Because at this point you might as well be showing us random cool boats that are not in deed for sale but just really interesting or have been bought and restored.
@@jacknimble1 they hsvevdecentvwalk through. Some are at a decent price.. some aren't.. they can't control what an owner is asking .. they are just showing a boat that happens to be for sale.
@@Johnsouthshore My point was that if you are going to be showing beat boats at crazy prices, at least show us interesting boats. So many boats to chose from in S FL.
Even with all the work needed and the asking price, my biggest pet peeve with this boat is the standing rigging right in the middle of the side deck 1:56... You have to lean out over the edge, or as you did, step up on the roof to bypass them. That gets old really fast, my last boat was that way.
Was going to say that looks like a Whitby 42 , built around the corner. Asking too much for work needed to be done inside and outside ,a fair price would be around 20,000. You can get one in good shape fresh water in Canada for 50,000 US
I agree with everyone that the price is outrageous. As an FYI, we have a 43' center console. It is not a walkover. I'm 6'2" and walk through without ducking other than for the door, and BTW, I have to duck going through most boat doors. Additionally we have a separate shower that I can stand in. My point is they do exist.
You never mentioned about the "heater exhaust"? Have to agree with others. Given the tankage appears done the boat is worth $1. As soon as you start it will be a complete gut. You are buying a hull and a very dubious engine.
I would love to get my hands on that and do a Mads at Sail Life type refit, but 79k is way overpriced for the condition it's in. there's nothing that looks semi new onboard.
I think you're a relative to to that guy on Svengoolie, you know the guy at the end of the show that always knocks on the door and talks with his hand like an Italian
do you think people are stealing stuff off the boat while it is setting unguarded like missing port lights ? and what do you think it would cost to dock this boat and store it out of season ?
I think it may cost something between 20....25k€, but, a fair price would be given on dry. However, it has a good point that one can live on it while doing fixing and modifications on his own pace.
A roller reefing main is no selling point. Didn't see it well enough but a slab reefing system on a boom gotten from a marine salvage center would be the way go there perhaps. Lotta work. Oh they are quite a bit away from the mark I would pay for that thing.
yeah this one is going to be a tough sell at that price point, but as always love your walk through and I do think it is educational for the lot of us that are thinking about a future boat purchase.
How many years has it been since it left the dock? This appears to be a micro apartment with authentic nautical decorations. For $80K maybe it's a good deal for apartment life on the water front? But if you like to sail, then you'll need to find something else which you can then park next to your "apartment"...how convenient is that?
I always liked the Brewer layouts... but prayers for any newbs or star struck that get sucked into paying anything close to 80. For 10 to 20, an adventurous soul would have found find his dream!
If you do a majority of the work (labor) yourself. Not knowing how the deck is (soft spots, deal breaker)nor the rigging. I would think 76,000 to refit Putting the boat worth 156 K...does that sound right?
Nice boat with potential but maybe worth half that price I would say, if that even. Thanks again but do open all the lockers etc as always good to see what it hiding behind them. Andy UK
Impressive design..should go North to dry out the mold in prep for treatment. Again, this has all the bones and is a real fixer upper and i would be looking at half the asking just to take it serious.
Looks like a pretty typical old sailboat to fix up. Needs lots of cosmetics...probably new water tanks, and new electronics, and considering the cosmetic shape which is the easiest part to deal with before you sell a boat...so it’s gonna require lots of things you can only guess about right now. But you are right..it’s a good old boat with good bones it seems. A VERY livable sailboat! They could have done all the cosmetics and made the boat look far better cared for. But overall, I think it could easily be given some months of work, and you can add a lot of value to it! Offer 40,000 and see where it goes. I think for 40k and a LOT of diy repairs, you could easily make this $120,000 boat! Just my 2 cents..it actually looks a lot like our boat when I baught her...and look at her now! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
I guestimated $35-40.000 before I checked the the price. What did I miss? Must cost 100k to upgrade to decent specs (all of rig seemed tired and what about the engine?)
Good long term project boat for someone with cash, know-how and time. Every layer will show problems, every system will need attention/replacement. It will sell if drastic price cut happens. The buyer is in for 2+ yrs of hard labor/ unpleasant surprises/refit work.
I like your work too I think you will find job I just think you just a little long-winded about it, but you do a fine job, you have educated me quite a bit, but then again I've always worked high-pressure jobs all my life and everything is short and sweet so I guess it's my lifestyle I need start slowing down because I want to find a boat and sail around the world myself in a Boyhood dream mine all my life
I really liked the lay out as well. But at nearly every step there were things that needed work. And that forward v-berth is basically two single berths with minimal foot room. My 20' boat has a nicer v-berth. It would also have been good to know the reason the plastic was wrapped around the bottom of the mast. Probably to keep the rain out, but was there water damage on the inside of the cabin around the mast? And in thinking about it, if the mast rigging is or was loose/sloppy that would explain the the deck/mast interface being messed up. I wonder how much work that might entail? Your next video? Kind of left us with a cliff hanger there now didn't you? Let me guess, . . . You're adopting a kid who comes with an inheritance that will allow you to buy the brand new sailboat of your choice. I'm right aren't I. : - ) Scott W PS - I saw your questions/comments in the La Vagabonde live stream on Monday. They answered one of my questions, but they seemed to attach another name to it, so maybe some else asked the same question?
There is something I am missing with brokers having products so mispriced. Do they do it to collect fees on the slip? In real estate you wouldn't see it as much because in homes needing a loan a house 2-3x's it's value would never appraise. One broker said he "Was sad to see her go (sell), she's brought a lot of interest" This after after several years. I assume he was able to steer these inquirers to other sells thus it was worth sitting on a dog. Anyone know the answer to this?
Meh, guess technically there is nothing that needs done to that head liner ... except it really should be insulated which would cut down a lil bit on some of that condensation and mold issues. Or if you need to get to any fittings on back of topside ... which looking at that boat is a strong possibility.
Must admit I generally don’t like center cockpits. I think they rent be be ugly boats compared to the classic looking aft cockpit. But this is a center cockpit I actually like. But 80k is over double what it’s worth with the amount of work needed on it.
Yikes that price is Way Too High for it's condition! However, it is a nicely laid out configuration, with many great areas of living space. Those tanks would scare me off instantly though. All of the bright work needs serious attention as you mentioned but certainly just maintenance. Seeing duct tape over those rear facing windows concerned as well. The wet heads,at least there were two! You didnt mention much about the engine, like type, HP, hours, etc. All in all a pretty nice boat but just not priced anywhere near realistic $.
Asking price is far too high. There's not much I'd trust in that boat, which ultimately means: * Replace the rigging. All of it. Standing rigging, halyards, everything. * Replace every bit of plumbing and piping and through-hulls and tanks - especially the diesel tank * Have a mechanic tear down the engine and rebuild it - though I'll say it didn't look too bad * With all the leakages I would be very wary of black mold, which means taking down much of the interior wood to look behind * Based on looks, I'd also want to very closely inspect any and all electronics and wiring for rot, deterioration etc. Bottom line, whoever takes on this boat probably will have to sink a ton of work and money into it.
I wouldn't pay more than $30,000 for this boat. It's solid, sure and well built, but it needs a lot of work. Even in good condition $79k is pushing your luck in this market!
Definite hard survey before even offering a reduced offer on this. Saw a few big ticket items I would be worried about. And hard survey would help you negotiate.
Huge news that's going to effect everyone, eh? -Well it's still the middle of the school year so you're not setting sail yet. -Boat work videos would be a change of pace but wouldn't require a special announcement. -Buying another boat? Maybe, but I would have expected some focus on it beforehand similar to your shopping around before Freebie landed in your laps. My money's on a pregnancy announcement in the next video.
We sold our almost perfect condition freshwater 1991 41' Jeanneau Voyage 12.50 last year for $75K, so this boat is very overpriced for its condition. Our boat was spotless, had new sails and had 1250 hours on the Yanmar. There is no way I would spend more than $25K on this, especially when you factor the time and money you'd have to put into this to bring it up to snuff.
I always enjoy seeing these boats, but I wish the price was easier and quicker to find. I only have a limited amount of time to watch UA-cams, so I don't go looking for the price.
I really like what you are doing with these video's. It is very interesting to see what's out there. I agree with you, this boat is a great platform to work with but not at that price. It's current condition that I could see, tells me it needs even more work that we couldn't see. It hasn't been kept up well. Beautiful boat however. I like the lines, the interior, etc. Just needs a total refit inside and out. As the Capitol One credit card commercial says.... what have you got in your wallet? ;-)

A roller reefing main is no selling point. Didn't see it well enough but a slab reefing system on a boom gotten from a marine salvage center would be the way go there perhaps. Lotta work. Oh they are quite a bit away from the mark I would pay for that thing.
Did you ever find out what the tanks in the bilge were for and what problem they might have?
What would you say would be the average amount in reduction for what the sellers expects to get for the boat? 20%?
yeah this one is going to be a tough sell at that price point, but as always love your walk through and I do think it is educational for the lot of us that are thinking about a future boat purchase.
totally perfect layout but they need to enter rehab over the asking price , 30K is more in line if they are serious about selling
30 k tops would reflect it's true value. Massive amounts of time and money to bring this one back to life. Just about new everything
How many years has it been since it left the dock? This appears to be a micro apartment with authentic nautical decorations. For $80K maybe it's a good deal for apartment life on the water front? But if you like to sail, then you'll need to find something else which you can then park next to your "apartment"...how convenient is that?
Not sure why 80 thousand.....this boat reminds me of the movie Money Pit......800 bucks and a thank you to the new owner.
I believe I have seen Ben do a tour of a Leopard 39 on the Tubes.
Maybe 35k assuming survey doesn't come up with serious problems. Take a look at the Bristols 41.1 43.3.
Nice boat with potential but maybe worth half that price I would say, if that even. Thanks again but do open all the lockers etc as always good to see what it hiding behind them. Andy UK
Hi Andy, I'm thinking not even half the price. I'm thinking closer to $20K.
You're missing who the star of this channel really is bud. Great vids though - keep it up.
Impressive design..should go North to dry out the mold in prep for treatment. Again, this has all the bones and is a real fixer upper and i would be looking at half the asking just to take it serious.
This broker should guide the client on a realistic price as its unsellable. The boats not worth anywhere near the asking price.
I also like the aft cockpit design. You didn't show the engine room.

Personally I prefer the go alone because it flows faster with less distractions.
Time to call Capt'n Ron!
-Rebecca on SV Brick House
buddy just picked up one in good shape for 30k , if your interested they are out there.
I guestimated $35-40.000 before I checked the the price. What did I miss? Must cost 100k to upgrade to decent specs (all of rig seemed tired and what about the engine?)
Wow, that next video sounds interesting.
: - ) Scott W
PS - I saw your questions/comments in the La Vagabonde live stream on Monday. They answered one of my questions, but they seemed to attach another name to it, so maybe some else asked the same question?
Great vid ya'll, how did the deck feel when you walked on it? what type of keel does it have?
There is something I am missing with brokers having products so mispriced. Do they do it to collect fees on the slip? In real estate you wouldn't see it as much because in homes needing a loan a house 2-3x's it's value would never appraise.
One broker said he "Was sad to see her go (sell), she's brought a lot of interest" This after after several years. I assume he was able to steer these inquirers to other sells thus it was worth sitting on a dog. Anyone know the answer to this?
“Room for activities” - is that a Tavarish reference?
I think it seems to be an honest price for that boat.
If they mean the price is in Sri Lankan rupee.
Thing will cost more to sort out then it’s worth now or finished.
Is he serious about that price 😂. Was going to add it to my list to view in a few weeks. Maybe if they knock $60k off
Total Gut job , but potentially a nice project low 30's
Meh, guess technically there is nothing that needs done to that head liner ... except it really should be insulated which would cut down a lil bit on some of that condensation and mold issues. Or if you need to get to any fittings on back of topside ... which looking at that boat is a strong possibility.
Yeah we know that you're going to do a full and continuous walkthrough at the end of your video it's part of your MO
There's not much I'd trust in that boat, which ultimately means:
* Replace the rigging. All of it. Standing rigging, halyards, everything.
* Replace every bit of plumbing and piping and through-hulls and tanks - especially the diesel tank
* Have a mechanic tear down the engine and rebuild it - though I'll say it didn't look too bad
* With all the leakages I would be very wary of black mold, which means taking down much of the interior wood to look behind
* Based on looks, I'd also want to very closely inspect any and all electronics and wiring for rot, deterioration etc.
Bottom line, whoever takes on this boat probably will have to sink a ton of work and money into it.
I wouldn't pay more than $30,000 for this boat. It's solid, sure and well built, but it needs a lot of work. Even in good condition $79k is pushing your luck in this market!
Agree on the over priced thought. After seeing this video I was thinking more like $35k.
At 8:05: Delis fan, hug?
Definite hard survey before even offering a reduced offer on this. Saw a few big ticket items I would be worried about. And hard survey would help you negotiate.
Huge news that's going to effect everyone, eh?
-Well it's still the middle of the school year so you're not setting sail yet.
-Boat work videos would be a change of pace but wouldn't require a special announcement.
-Buying another boat? Maybe, but I would have expected some focus on it beforehand similar to your shopping around before Freebie landed in your laps.
My money's on a pregnancy announcement in the next video.
GreenLanturn93 I smell "clickbait"
@@jedi201 Always beware the "big news coming" so please subscribe tease....
Randy is the only reason I watch these, sorry.
As the Capitol One credit card commercial says.... what have you got in your wallet? ;-)
only thing i like about the boat is the access to the engine room...
Do they pay you to show these boats ??
More than a little bit overpriced. I'd offer $20k if I was interested in doing that much work.
$20k was my thought too. Realistically they probably just want the boat to go away to get rid of the dock fee.
Not me, I learned my lesson years ago. I low balled a turd hauler like this and bought it by accident !!!!
