  • We've been getting a lot of you guys asking for some more affordable and smaller boats than what we've been showing, so we've reached out to a few boats that we think would be good to tour and this is the first "smaller" boat we're touring (For clarification, this is definitely not a small boat, just in comparison to the other's we've been on recently it is smaller). We've got more on the list that are in the 30-40 foot range and some even smaller so stay tuned for those.
    We really enjoyed touring this boat. We both believe it to be in good shape and well set up to sail the world with minimal necessary work. It's ready to go!
    The Spindrift 46 was built by Formosa Yachts using the same molds as the Formosa 46 from 1980 to 1984. Ron Hillier of Brisbane, Australia oversaw the building of this yacht which was to be sold in the United States for Bristol Yachts of Newport Beach, CA. For the Australian market, they were called the Hillier/Peterson 46.

    Always enjoy your boat tours but do have one little suggestion. Let the camera enter the cabin first so viewers cn see it without someone standing in the way.

    OMG, I cannot believe you did a Spindrift. Takes me down memory lane. Spindrift Yachts made power and sail boats in Taiwan and was owned by Tony Bell, one of the most corrupt men in an industry known for corruption. Let me give you some history and you can search the rest. In October 1987, I was a broker at the Spindrift office at Bahia Mar in Lauderdale. I had just started working there, had an office overlooking the harbor, and figured I would be there for the next thirty years. Life was good. After years of farting around with sailboats I was working with powerboats and finally making some money.
    In late October the stock market dropped over 500 points in one day. That is nothing now but at the time the Dow was around 2,000. Some people panicked. Tony Bell was one of them. He flew in from California the following week for the Lauderdale Boat Show. He was there for our weekly Wednesday morning brokers meeting. He went around the table asking each of us if we had any hot deals working. I did not realize it then, but he was canvasing us to see if there were going to be any deposits coming in over the next few days.
    That afternoon he flew back to California, cleared out the operating and ecscrow accounts for each of the three Spindrift offices, and took off for South America. He took deposits from at least 25 customers, some of whom were heavy hitters and not to be trifled with. We later learned from his brother this was the second time he had pulled this scam.
    They found him on the beach near Daytona in August 2001 with a bullet in his head. The cops ruled it a suicide but those of us who knew him all agreed that one of his old customers had finally caught up with him. We all celebrated his demise and toasted the hit man.

    MIAMI -- Tony Bell, accused of stealing nearly $2 million from wealthy clients in South Florida and California in deposits for luxury yachts that never touched water, didn't just bilk customers -- he taunted them, police said, dispatching letters and Christmas cards to victims that bragged of his globe-trotting exploits on their money.
    Arrested in Winter Park in 1990, Bell hired an attorney and delayed trial for a decade.
    The stalemate ended Friday when Bell apparently fired a bullet into his head on a Volusia County beach.
    "This thing has gone on for so long. You have to wonder what else was wrong in his life. Why now?" said Teresa Widmer, an assistant state attorney in Broward County. "This wasn't over. He wasn't going to prison tomorrow."
    Police found the body of Richard Anthony Bell at the water's edge at Ormond-by-the-Sea. A suicide note and a .38-caliber handgun lay nearby.
    Bell, 61, had battled Broward prosecutors for 11 years to postpone trial on charges of racketeering and grand theft.
    On the day before Bell died, his longtime lawyer, Ed McGee, said he wanted out of the case.
    Bell's company, Spindrift Yachts, sold custom-built watercraft to Hollywood filmmakers and South Florida millionaires. Investigators say Bell in November 1987 told his executives that his yacht brokerage was going under. Then he boarded a plane to South America. He made off with deposits and partial payments from 25 customers, seven in Florida and most of the rest in California, police said.
    As he traveled, Bell sent letters to dozens of former clients, alternately apologizing for their losses and bragging about the fun he was having.
    "He told some of the victims, 'You can lose it better than I,' " said Tom Van Rijn of Parkland, a yacht-builder who worked with Bell. "He was a very complicated guy, but he was a crook throughout. It was all planned."
    Three years after he fled, police caught up with Bell at a recreational-vehicle repair shop in Winter Park. Bell and his attorney stalled the case by waging a drawn-out debate over whether Florida prosecutors had the right to press charges on yacht sales in California.

    Tony Bell mailed out Christmas greetings to about two dozen people who had been wondering where in the world he was.
    Bell cheerfully wrote from South America that he was traveling around the world with their money and having a great time of it.
    The letters were sent to people from Florida to California who had lost as much as $2 million when Bell took off in 1987 with money deposited for luxury yachts Bell promised to build, police said.
    On Wednesday, after two years on the run, Bell, 51, was arrested in Winter Park on charges of racketeering, grand theft and organized fraud.
    Fort Lauderdale Detective Kevin Allen began the investigation in the fall of 1987 and tracked the case from Fort Lauderdale to California to Taiwan, where the yachts were supposed to be built.
    "Most of these victims were so affluent, they wrote it off as a loss or they tried to work it out through a private attorney," Allen said. "It's amazing."
    Bell was picked up by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's fugitive squad at a recreational vehicle business where he had been working. His bail was set at $955,000, and he will be brought to Fort Lauderdale to face the charges, Allen said.
    Bell's victims include Richard Donner, the director and producer of Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon II, California sculptor Ron Lee, and at least 23 other wealthy business people and executives, Allen said.
    Their losses ranged from $5,000 to $500,000.
    "In the past I have been kicked when I was down, but never kicked when I was down and then run over," said Lee, who lost $112,000 to Bell and received one of the Christmas greetings. "That was one of the most rotten things anyone could ever do."
    Donner lost about $30,000 that he gave to Bell as a deposit on a 58-foot yacht. He learned of Bell's arrest early Wednesday.
    "We opened a bottle of champagne this morning," Donner said. "It's been a long time. There are a lot of people who suffered a lot of pain. Detective Allen deserves every commendation."
    Bell operated Spindrift Yachts at Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale and in Newport Beach, Calif. The firm specialized in custom luxury yachts and had an excellent reputation at one time, police and victims said.
    Allen heard about Bell in the fall of 1987.
    A man in Marco Island told Allen that he had paid $15,000 to Bell to build a yacht, then heard that Bell had left the country with the money.
    Allen began asking questions. He followed Bell's trail to California, where Allen began finding other victims.
    The detective later learned that Bell had called a telephone conference of his top executives in Newport Beach, Calif., including Bell's brother and partner, Randy.
    As the others sat around a table, Bell told them over a speakerphone that he was tired of being broke, so he was abandoning the business and leaving the country.
    He left with a girlfriend, Allen said, and took with him at least $2 million he had wired to banks in New York, New Jersey and eventually the Cayman Islands. Allen suspects there is more money hidden in Swiss bank accounts.
    The names of new victims continued to appear. There were stories of unfinished yachts and of Bell selling the same boat to three different people. There were civil suits against Bell to recover the money.
    Lee, the California sculptor, said Bell became a friend after Lee bought one boat and later traded it in for another that was to be custom-built.
    The men set up a deal where Lee would help design his new yacht and Bell would keep the money after the traded-in boat was sold.
    Bell sold the boat for $112,000, and Lee said he never saw the money, or Bell, again.
    Randy Bell told Lee that Tony Bell had called from the airport and said he was leaving town.
    "I started to cry," Lee said. "I felt very betrayed. It was a very emotional moment. I had so much trust in him. What he did was unjustifiable."
    But Lee said he does not hate Tony Bell.
    "I don't necessarily want to see him go to jail," Lee said. "I just want my money back. I still like him. I feel sorry for him. I'd even buy a boat from him, but I wouldn't pay the deposit up front."

    Thanks guys really appreciated the boat tours nice to see other boats and gives all ideas for improvement 👍loved the wood and the keyhole bulkhead between the saloon and galley sure the Rival boats do this. Totally right about the creaking floors had a boat with some creaks before ended up lifting the flooring and putting down the little stickback rubber pads you get for furniture to stop it marking. Fitted these on all the boat cross members between the cabin sole, helped loads but still had a few creaks when walked on. Keep up the great videos 👏👍⛵🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Thanks for the luxury of being able to dream of this boat. If I owned it I would put another cabinet in the galley and make it U shaped so you can brace yourself easier during passage. As a lot of these sailboats I would add a liberal amount of handholds. The cabinetry looks very safe and beautifully done. I would make a sit-down workshop out of the mid berth next to the engine that could be converted to a bunk if the need arises. Nice boat and a nice job on this walk through.

    I'm sure the Naval Architect spent hours milling over space planning , ergonomics , conveniences, functionality & safety . Looked like a perfect boat for you two ....

    That was a lovely yacht , many nice features and good enough condition to use now . Good design from a quality Asia yard.
    I would liked to have a look under the floor I hope that creaking is not a problem with the floor. But it does need some work to stop that.
    The, probably, removed teak decks is really good! The west coast one for sale has teak old decks......uck! No AC and no generator is old school for modern folks . Much better price than the PNW Boat too. Good one. Cheers Warren

    We have had our Kelly Peterson 44 for 25 years (nearly a sistership) and it’s still our dream boat! Up in Maine for summer but headed back again to Marathon by November. Maybe we will see you there this winter.

    Great boat, the walk through tunnel gives the boat a lower profile than a full height corridor, I think they say it makes for less windage

    Nice job! In that type of galley, a galley strap would be in order with multiple attachment points to either secure yourself in front of the stove or facing aft, in front of the sink.

    Boats are SO MAINTENANCE INTENSIVE. Sail boats are so much more so. It reminds me of coming home after separating from the service in 1971 and buying a VW van. I had no idea how to take care of a car. A boat will quickly overwhelm you with problems.

    The forward seat on the pulpit is generally used for Blue water cruising for Dolphins watching. SV Delos also does alot of filming from there pulpit seat.

    The seat up forward is used for watching the world go by great for watching dolphines! The seat is also known as a "Princess Seat" as its usally a lady sitting there. Nice boat, and your getting better on your videos and knowning your boat parts....

    I always look up Hylas and Oyster when thinking of cruising. This boat is a very nice compromise when facing the prices of the other “names”. I couldn’t live with that creaky floor, though, and I think it would take an enormous amount of time simply to troubleshoot the problem before beginning a fix to it.

    As a newbie approaching retirement I Love your videos and comments.
    Perhaps abit more looking into storage tanks, etc. That would really give an idea of whats going on.
    Other than that you could feed a family of 4 for 3 months aboard this vessel.
    My congrats to you on a well done job!!!

    It doesn't take much movement for boards to creak like that. It's somewhat possible that it's a bigger problem but given the deck is so solid, it's probably just loose floorboards. I've seen many brick houses with creaking floor boards. That really is a beautiful boat. Very roomy too yet still has huge potential for better use of space. It must be sold since the price isn't listed. I wonder how much.

    Lovely vessel. Quite narrow in the beam for its length. As a `post revolution' yacht of the 1980's I'd have expected at least another foot in the beam. Twelve feet is more appropriate to a 30-35 footer. Pity we never built them like that in the UK, we might still have an industry to speak of...

    Just a comment on the anchor swivel, most anchor manufacturers recommend the swivel fitted on a short length of chain never directly to the anchor , for good reason as you swing on anchor it puts side load on the swivel ,this point loads the swivel at its weakest point . I always see them connected directly to the anchor...

    This is a pretty nice Kelly Cheaterson boat. (what they call the copies of the KP44/46) Seems to be built to a higher standard than some like the other Formosas.

    This is a really nice ocean cruiser ... and if it was sold by Bristol it is a quality boat. One thing I noticed right a way ... NO safety line on the anchor (chain) when stowed. You need to "secure" the anchor!!! I have heard too many stories of driving through a head sea and the anchor comes loose ... chain slips on, even completely off the windless ... then you have real issues ... the boat is at risk ... and so are you when you have to go forward to re-secure the anchor ...
    I had this happen on a powerboat once when the anchor wasn't tied down in it's "deck chocks" ... and was sliding around on the foredeck ... I had to go up through the forward hatch ... sleep in a wet V-berth that night (sucked) !!! Never let that happen again (and we had to spot paint the fore deck too later)
    Simple fix ... to prevent a major issue ...

      @@LearningtheLines I have heard of people using talc or other powder - I think the logic is that the creaking is often really small gaps between the wood so the tiny particles can fill it. That or just make it a feature!

    Pretty boat. Cutters seem narrow but that's also what makes them fast. If only it had a couple more feet of beam, the galley and heads could be a bit more accommodating. All in all, not a bad rig!

    Could you please describe the hull construction of the boats when you do a tour? EG fiberglass foam core , all fiberglass, steel, aluminum. The keel type would also be of interest too . Thanks for your work. I know you can't tell us everything. Thanks for the smaller sailboats.

      I agree. And open some floor hatches to see the bilge and storage. Particulars on the engine, gen., water maker, and batteries would make us more interested.

    Those are tambour doors. Mainly used on roll top desks. The real thing is actually interlocked wood slats, the common version is wood slats glued to a fabric backing.
    All that creaking would make me want to check under the floors, to make sure nothing was wrong, like rotten ribs.

      Yep, normally reserved as a "chill out" space or the spot you go to when you need some alone time, with the understanding that if someone is up there they should not be disturbed

    I've seen folks use seats like that in that position to sit in while watching for corral and other obstacles.

    The mast steps aren't just good for getting up, they're great for taking some weight and giving some stability while working. The lowest steps on this mast are just below the lower spreaders, one of the first places you stop going up the mast to do inspection and maintenance.

    What’s the overall interior headroom on most boats like this? I’m 6’4” tall and would like something I could stand in most areas comfortably. What boats are beat suited for taller people?

      Bigger ones, typically. I'm not sure what the headroom is in this one as I'm only 5'11" and generally don't have a problem. We have a friend that's 6'4" though and he can't really stand in his Tartan 37.

    It's odd how they put the reinforcing patches on the outside. Normally, they would go on the inside. (I'm no expert, just that is how bimini's that I have owned were made) Those may have been added after wear points were already coming through the canvas.

    No water maker and no mention of air-conditioning what condition where the sails in and how many sails came with this?
    How many hours are on the engine? Sorry just a few things I’m looking for?

    Was that really a "ground wire" or was it an SSB antenna on the backstay? I noticed that the boat was equipped with SSB.

      Correct John. That was an SSB / HF antenna running up the backstay, with the insulators to keep the two seperated. 73 N4BRM

    1:23 - I've heard them called "Sissy bars" as well. (Before your time, our bicycles as kids in the early 70's 's had "chopper forks", "banana seats" and "sissy bars" on the back...)

    Upper mast steps give you support when working up there, you don't work much on the lower mast....

    Any chance yall will walkthrough and boats in the 20-30k range... all these boats are way out of my reach
