That 'I've got the whole day left' montage hit quite uncomfortably close to home...
Wow... in the UK you get approached and scolded while wearing a mask... outside!!! What a true dystopian cesspool that would be speaking German if it weren't for US country they have become! 🤣🤣
Honestly? no, but we probably should considering how badly we've handled the pandemic we're no.5 in the world for deaths per million. Also are you trolling? the comment seems incredibly stupid.
@@morpheus587
That was most likely part of the bit. Quinns wouldn't have been so blase otherwise.
@@morpheus587 Yes, it is good to let anyone do whatever they want. No matter if it causes harm to others coz freedumb.
I`m 62. I`ve been playing these games since before this Quinns fella was born 💀.
Anyway, My City: Until about halfway through I was so far behind the leader that I had no chance of making up the difference. Then the game changed significantly. I came up with a plan. My opponents somehow neglected one of the new features. My plan worked, and I eventually won on the tie-breaker. This was one of my most memorable victories ever...Fantastic game.
What a nice experience
The "you see how much you are behind on the board and it can be demoralising" was also a negative that Rahdo mentioned, and it has kept me from picking this up.
From what I understand the rules change ( a bit) every 3 games, so could the new feature also be something that would disappear very quickly?
Quinns... you know post office employees don’t actually get to open the envelopes... right?
In Quinnstown they do!
That's just what they want you to think, innit.
I'm convinced that Quinn's is only making videos these days to show off his amazing view
amazing view of dull grey skies and rain splattered window panes lol, I'm sure on the 5 or 6 nice days in England it's fantastic though!
No, because on those days we're too busy whinging that it's too bright and hot and we can't see the television properly.
It's really nice, but I don't think I could ever get used to the i360 cutting into the skyline like that.
@@nHautamaki haha, who cares if it rains or not? The ocean is beautiful all of the time
@@sirspate you don't like the shaft and sliding ring combo that must have got the town planning committee laughing like naughty school kids?
Quinns really hit the dude outside with a clickbait article title
I genuinely thought that was real for a solid minute.
Dammit, lockdown rules have just prevented us from witnessing a tall, white man awkwardly rapping. COVID has yet again deprived us of life's simple pleasures.
Really nice to see Quinns relaxed, rather than trying to stuff himself into a box.
Better theme idea: fitting Christmas presents under a tree and the legacy mechanics represent your kids getting older.
Considering it was just Groundhog day, watching this upload again creeps me out.
What do you mean? It was only uploaded once.
@@Possi_ball (Shhhh. It's a joke. Play along.)
It bears repeating that Board Game Reviewing is in fact Essential Work.
well, as I said on the first upload, I'm impressed they went to the effort of the 2-sided boards to allow the evergreen play mode.
But yeah, they really did play it ultra-safe on the theming.
I don't know if playing it safe makes it the wrong choice. I think placing buildings in a town is a better theme than any they listed and I think it would probably a whole lot easier for me to get a group to commit to playing dozens of games of than something like Real Housewives organizing their shoes.
@@falconJB Idk, you're right, but it feels like when you're trying to go to a restaurant and the only place people can agree on is Olive Garden despite, yk, Olive Garden being Olive Garden. It's no one's favorite. It's *tolerable*.
Ideally a specific theme would be so well done and magnetic just from the box that after one game you'd be sucked in. Might not be able to get as wide a range of people into a fashion closet game, but imagine how much more personal it would feel getting a Commes de Garcons coccoon or whatever instead of a church, etc.
@@cantrip7 I'd rather go to Olive Garden with all my friends than go to the best niche restaurant alone.
I think having a theme everyone is fine with is especially important in legacy games where you want a game you can get a group of people to want to play for dozens of games. The worse case scenario for this type of game is that you convince your group to give it a try and a few games into the campaign half the group is still really into it and the other half is completely done with the idea of rearranging their shoes for the umpteenth time.
This is particularly important for this game because its selling its self as a family game so it can't have a theme any members of the family are likely to just bounce off of.
Theme could have been a hostess seating diners at an Olive Garden.
Far worse than the theme(or lack thereof) was the presentation. The pieces have an untextured gray background? Really? They could have just used the same grassy texture as the board itself, and it would instantly be twice as pleasing, with no extra effort or cost.
They really needed a graphic designer to slap this thing with a color palette a few times before they moved it to production.
Alternate theme: Packing a suitcase for a trip
Or the trunk of the car with bags.
What about fitting buffet food items on your plate? Baked beans earns double points..
Hang on... You lose points for every green space you have left?
Sounds like "Coventry City Planning: The Game." 🤣
New ring roads expansion?
More like sounds exactly like Patchwork.
that first upload was like a legacy game. i could just watch it once.
The best intro ever. Edit: and best outro.
These kitchen shots making tee remind me of the old SUSD. God, I miss Praul.
I miss the egg song... and getting “extravagant” with a mid-review recipe.
Oh yeah, good ol' Praul.
The gag at 4:00 is probably the hardest I've laughed all week.

Return of the "being accosted for breaking quarantine" joke
All hail the dear leader
Quinn's and this channel as a whole has brought me such joy throughout this god awful pandemic.
"Involving sealed envelopes and stickers..." One reason that I love Shut Up & Sit Down is because I can often tell which games would be completely wrong for me very quickly. Fun, entertaining reviews but also very informative.
In case you left the review immediately after hearing "sealed envelopes and stickers...," I just want to make sure that you were aware that My City can be played as a standard, unchanging board game using the front of the boards (this is called "Eternal City" mode in the rules), while the Legacy City mode uses the back of the board. Depending on the price, it may be worth your while to get it just for the Eternal City mode.
Isn't the first theming suggestion just Isle of Cats with more animals? (and much less complexity)
A fun theme would be displaying a collection of looted/repatriated (depending) artefacts in a museum
The circus theme would be awesome. Really great idea.
Really enjoyed how you started playing the game at the end.
Wonderful!
A review for a game I already own!? This is madness!
Thanks Quinn, I have always liked games but never really gotten into playing a lot of board games. Your enthousiasm, honesty and clarity in reviews have provided me with so many good options and it really opened up this new world that I truly love. Downside is I have a huge craving for games now and can't always play it with this damn pandemic. P.S. race of the galaxy was an amazing recommendation!
Knizia: "Can I copy your homework?"
Rosenberg: "Okay but don't make it obvious."
If anything, Knizia copied himself. Check out his earlier 2009 game called Fits. The only real difference is that in Fits you slide the pieces down (ala Tetris), and in My City you simply plop them down.
Bummed Quinns didn't actually sing...also a little relieved
Thanks for this review Quinns, this quarantine just got way better, thank you all for your amazing work. But man, watching your videos is expensive!!! 😂
Wait I wanted to finish watching him play, go back!
The sounds in this video bring me so much joy
That intro makes me think I’m either in a movie theater in THX in the 80s or listening to Countdown to Zero by Asia
I received Scarabya for Christmas, which is a similar polyomino game that is family friendly. No legacy element, but compelling gameplay as your team of archaeologists works to uncover ancient artifacts by surrounding their sites. Each player color also has a totally different theme, which is a nice little touch. Definitely worth checking out for fans of the genre, or if you're looking for a game to play with family that may not be drawn to urban planning.
Quinns going into the kitchen for a cup of tea for some reason took me waaay back to the beginning days of SUSD.
Slotting weirdly shaped chipsets on a computer panel. There, that's my better theme.
I think that is a theme I would like more, but I think a lot of other people wouldn't.
@@falconJB mmm. IDK. Wasted space on the board, exposed components, uninterrupted data flow for adjacent chips of the right types, and at the end graded for efficiency so you don’t even have to rely on victory points, the legacy component would be competing engineers in a company where the best are given more responsibilities to deal with, it’s a lot more engaging and actually fits the mechanics better than the stale bread of the city building theme.
@@thechevyferrari9559 I agree that it would fit well and I would like it, but designers use building cities and towns not just because they are lazy but because it has fairly universal appeal. A group is far more likely to say yes to committing to playing dozens of games of city building than chip placement. Also since its meant to be a family game its likely that many in its target audience haven't played so many city builders that they are tired of them.
soooo make it a reboot version ?
I wonder whats with the really short "shower" scene in this video? at 4:00. Got me thinking of Monty Python. Thanks for another great and funny video.
RE: working in a post office. Considering if you live in the US the post office has job security (Pretty hard to get canned from the post office) and a pretty sweet benefits package(delicious healthcare benefits! All the envelope glue you can eat!), pays reasonably well, and one of the last remaining jobs you can get a pension for (All of the above has a little "For now" asterisk), not to mention 13 days of leave per year for the first 3 years? Yeah, I would like to work there.
13 days a year? What is the USA doing?
UK legal minimum is 20 plus the 8 bank holidays.
Shh, don't say that out loud! Bojo Jojo will turn up in his big red clown bus and take our holidays away!
Seriously though, I lived in the States for for years, and unless your job is unionised, you're pretty stuffed. Things we take for granted in the UK just don't exist there, and you'll get shafted by you health insurers if they think you can't afford to take them to court for refusing to pay out.
1:27 watching this in the break room at the post office... xd
I bought this when hints were pointing at it in previous SUSD videos (or newsletter?) for around £30 and I don't regret it! The video doesn't mention it but it works for 2 players (with tiny hiccups when scoring sometimes). The game is so short it's almost the same trap than "let's grab one drink".
Loving the happy energy. Really needed this today. Thanks Quinns
I bought this game based on this review and it arrived today. Not even had a chance to play with anybody, but playing it solo has got me hooked! It's a mix of relaxing and exciting, and so satisfying when everything works out. Can't wait to crack into the legacy content, and speaking of content, fabulous video!
He didn't pack himself in his box!? He's just roaming free!? Someone call the police!
I played this with my girlfriend and my daughter and I think it's my all time favorite gaming experience. It might not be the best game but we had such a blast with it I was winning pretty much from episode 4 to 21. The last games, my daughter pulled ahead and won the entire thing. I was so proud.
This is a great couples game me and the wife got 2 legacy play throughs in 1 box
can you keep playing the legacy side once the campaign is done?
"Do you Remember Princes Of Florence and wish it was just a bit simpler? Do you wish Patchwork had a Legacy mode? Then you're gonna love MY CITY!"
This looks like a much lighter version of Isle of Cats, but with legacy elements.
My thought exactly!
So how does it compare to Paris: La Cite Lumiere? Seems similar in simplicity, but with a much nicer palette / presentation
“Spoons at the buffet of a cuddling convention” was an absolutely top tier line.
Not only is this a review about a *legacy* game, the water kettle in the montage @3:45 is in a color called "Legacy Red".
Genius!
"....and so CHEAP"
(checks ebay prices)
hmm....
Yes its only.... $100?!?
Why is eBay the first place to check? Buy it from the manufacturer for $25
£27.20 from Magic Madhouse if you`re in the UK.
@@kev_whatev Ebay isn't the first place, but its sold out most places even their US site it said it was sold out.
Dude my house is cold and I want your hoodie. Good review btw
Great! I was hovering around this game. Now I’ll be sitting around it. Thank you
This style of Polyomino game (I call them Tetris games) has been very popular with designers recently and your final comment about theme hits upon the main reason I can't justify owning more than two of them. They all feel like more or less the same game to me. Sure there's something inescapably appealing about a blank canvas and creating your own little thing that you can feel proud of. It's why I poured more than a decade into Rollercoaster Tycoon back in the day. And maybe for some of us there's also some psychological compulsion toward trying to compel the forces of chaos in this Flatland cardboard universe into a perfect symmetry that the real world stubbornly refuses to conform to which scratches an itch. But even with compelling artwork and a novel theme, the choices you're making about how to place these familiar shapes to best fill the grid are virtually identical from game to game. New York Zoo has the thematically appropriate breeding mechanic to add a second layer of choices and slightly more immersion. Generally speaking though, I'm always left with the question of "is this different enough to justify chucking one of the nearly identical games I already own for"? And that answer is almost always no.
I think of them of as polyominoes simply because that's how I first met them when they were still a puzzle, and not yet a game. It was in Arthur C. Clarke's "Imperial Earth" which I first read in the early '80s. In subsequent years, after making and trying the puzzles, I had all sorts of ideas for turning them into the foundation of board games but, of course, my primitive attempts have now been overtaken by the vast slew of polyomino games now published by real game designers.
@@DerekHohls Oh, that sounds fun. I may have to read that! For my part I just hear that Tetris theme music from the Nintendo Gameboy in my head at the mere sight of them and the anxiety starts to kick in. Which, now that I think of it, might play a role in why I don't like any of these games. I thought I would like The Princes of Florence, New York Zoo, and Paris: La Cité de la Lumière but all of them got boring for me after a couple plays. Llamaland is the only polyomino game I've kept and it's skating by mostly on the strength of it's adorable little llamas.
If you have ideas for how to use them which are inspired by Arthur C. Clarke I'd say give it a go and put something out there. Anybody can be a game designer -- you just have to be willing to fail over and over again until you make something that works. I'm still waiting for a designer to use them in a way that is truly unique so you've got at least one customer if you figure it out.
Did anyone notice his hair was still slightly wet after the shower bit? gotta love that attention to detail.
Great observation and ideas for how many other more engaging themes this game could have had!
A really enjoyable video. The comedy and critique was on point
"The Drummer hasn't slept for a few days." Sounds par for the course to me.
In this case, however, he's *not* on any uppers.
Quinns Quinns Quinns Quinns. Board game reviews IS essential work!
I think the joke is that Quinns tried to sell that excuse, and the policeman wasn't buying it. :D
Yeah. Way to play it off Quinns
Can someone please make one of the themed version ideas for this game? All of them sound so good. (Although with the idea of the pet one I guess would mean that not fitting a tile represents that you couldn't adopt the animal which is too sad.)
isle of cats. Rescue cats on a boat. It's not legacy, but it is a favourite with everyone I played it with. They even ask us when we are going to play it again.
the word you're looking for is "drab"
Quins what are your thoughts on tiny towns? My city appears to scratch a similar itch, but I feel like there might be something slightly more satisfying. Would love to hear how you would compare them!
The problem with the theme is that if each shape were individualized, like knickers, handkerchief, and suspenders for an old-timey suitcase, the players could identify with the items rather than the shape. You could say "Damn it, I've got no space for knickers!" or "C'mon C'mon mustache comb!" or whatever even with that admittedly tepid theme. The abstraction to generic buildings prevents identifying with the pieces, missing that extra level of engagement.
The theme problem carries over into the scoring because the metric of "best city = no green space" doesn't have the intuitive click of "perfectly packing a suitcase or car trunk," "seating people as many people as possible at an event," "cramming food on your buffet plate," or "organizing a zoo so the animals don't eat each other." In all of those examples not placing a shape represents a thematic loss (I couldn't take my handkerchief, Izabell couldn't come to the party again, I missed out on the tapioca, etc.), not just "I couldn't fit this oddly-shaped piece."
I’ve been in the hobby a little over two years and this is the first time I’ve played a game BEFORE the SUSD review and I’m oddly proud of that. It feels like something that deserves a sticker.
Great review. This and BoardGameBollocks are my go to channels for boardgame reviews. Keep up the good work.
My brain, during this whole review: G O O P T I M E
Thank you, yes.
Same, haha
Great, funny review. Some real Sprawlopolis energy to this one. Looks fun.
It seems like a blast to play, and very novice friendly. I'll certainly keep an eye out for it. Thanks for another great review!
Looks like a must buy. Great video!
That rudo man was mistaken, board games and board game reviews are absolutely essential work. Playing this game seems essential too.
Had never really noticed what town Quinn's lived in, but find it a bit coincidental that I watched this video on the same afternoon that I just saw Plucky Brighton defeat Champions Liverpool in a sport that I am pretty sure is called "kick-ball-with-foot ball game".
Hold up didn't I just watch this? 2 reviews in the same day yay 😂
It seems he edited the title. From "dinky" to "dinkier"
@@3dreamsequence also edited the ending
The final envelope of the legacy variant introduces more realism. The first 20 turns are spent solely on meetings to decide on the city planning, which eventually concludes on a lay out least desirable to the residents.
Loving the weekly vids!
Played through the whole MyCity campaign with my wife and son over about 3 weeks. Loved it
one of the best intros so far
"C - I was pleasured"
that escalated quickly :`D
As always, great review. When I first heard about my cities I was very excited and then put off somewhat by the mixed reviews. After watching this, I'm still conflicted! I love that your player board is your own, and I really need to add a tesscelation game to my collection, but I'm afraid of the lack of player interaction. (This is one of the many reasons Isle of Skye is one of my favorite games which sees play at least once a month despite us being on a gloomhaven kick right now) Do you think it holds up as a game that can share space with Isle of Skye? How does it compare to isle of cats or other tesscelation games, I'm also conflicted since the main mechanich seems very similar to cartographers.
I think I want to love this game but if I get the other things on my wish list I just do not have a place for it.
So glad I got this a few weeks ago prior to the review. As always after glowing susd reviews, it is now out of stock. Great game. Quinn's, Matt and all the team are absolutely nailing it lately. Such great reviews and content. Keep up the good work guys!
The cirkus setting up in every city really does make sense as a theme. :/ Or building a theme park :O
Really helpful review that has helped me evaluate the game as a potential purchase - many thanks!
Sounds like Quinns has been to more than his fair share of Depeche Mode gigs
As if Knizia has ever been known for his theming choices!

Is it weird that I live for the moments in the SU&SD videos when someone is fully dressed in the shower?
Oh no! My spouse is almost 63. I better hurry up and get this game.
Ive been preaching the word since last fall, this game is the biggest bang for your buck out there. Fun, cheap, legacy, family friendly, solo friendly, distance gaming friendly (if you each have a copy), it is just so darn ...surprising!
I’m calling mine New Quintown, because I live in a colony (Canada)
1:27 You know whats fucking stupid great, is that I'm sitting here in the US, getting a great feeling off those envelopes too. I remember being a kid where I had a book that included different letters to people that you were "delivering," unique envelopes with some fun note inside, also themed to the letter. Ultimately I think Quinns is right.

The walk-in closet suggestion 😂
Ants on a picnic has been done. It's called Bites and it's quite interesting.
Did you reuploaded? Lol it became unavailable in mid-way through! =P
Oh this boardgame review was uploaded at the end of the round so it was removed when the victory points were being tabulated, this is just the video being placed at the top of the feed at the start of the next rounds first phase.
I think they had to scratch off the mobile number from the video and had to reupload
it just became dinkier ;)
For me the video became private exactly at the shower scene.
That was a bit of a mindfuck.
I want the full city song. Please, Quinns, please.
The sky is... brown?
Is it Essential Work?
Yeah, it's my job. That's how I feed my family, what is more essential than that?
So, correct me if I'm wrong here: It is a tile-laying roll-n-"write" with legacy elements by a legendary game designer.
Add “with optional legacy elements” and it’ll fully encompass it.
The thing I love the most is that this game can be played solo all you have to do is say that you want x amount of points if you get it then you win (which is basically just an excuse for you to play this game even more).
Great review, but I have no idea of the size of the game! Where is the reference pear? 🍐
Super review. Loved the Covid police bit! Should have said you were exercising.
Theme idea: Packing as many people as you can into an illegal Covid party?
