Yeah as a person with a foot in both camps, I only hear Americans talking about it. I've never heard it mentioned or referred to once while in Korea. It's definitely an American narrative.

As a Korean, I have never heard of the 4B moment. It's just a shadowy culture that only happens online. Foreigners, don't exaggerate. The reason the birth rate is low is because of materialism.

The reason not to have children is a woman’s decision, sometimes supported by a feminist man. Do not underestimate the decision of women and of the men that support them. If you are pressured by a patriarchal and demanding society to compete, have money and be the best, it is not a materialistic choice. It’s a protecting one.
I think some of the comments were somewhat correct. There are economic and social reasons why couples are foregoing having children. If a single income family cannot bear the costs of having children then the wife must also have to find a job. But wives who work also bear most of the burden of housework and child care. That makes most woment hesitant to marry or have a child.

Anna was very professional and well thought as always. its interesting that 4b keeps coming up and I now hear it being brought up an awful lot in the U.S.. in conjunction with our rapidly declining birthrates. The truth is, this is something that media and government seem to be bringing to the forefront in order to point misplaced blame. The truth about our declining birthrates is very much as Anna clearly stated: it is an economic issue, it is an issue of policy failure. People can barely afford to take care of themselves anymore. The average cost of a home, where I live is over a million dollars and the price keeps rising despite the fact that so many of them sit empty, and the average employee salary is barely enough to cover rent. Rising inflation related to food is completely out of control. People are just acknowledging a growing problem with no end in site and are doing the responsible thing by not creating families. Also (and I admit I learned a lot about this from Park JImin (no joke) ) feminism, even radical feminism, is about true equality...full stop. There needs to be more differentiation between the different movements, so as not to stoke hate based on misunderstandings.

I heard about the Korean 4B movement in 2020 when it was at its peak. It was in online news because Korean men were upset about a guesture on an ad. But it really doesn’t matter if most Korean women don’t know about 4B. Or many could be practicing 4B and moving in silence. However, some Western women have decided to give it a go. Actually, there have been pockets of western women “Decentering Men” (similar to 4B) long before someone decided to name it West 4B. The one comment I don’t understand is how 4B equates to hating men. Choosing not to date, marry, procreate or have intimate relationships with a man doesn’t mean you hate men. Maybe these women simply want peaceful, stress-free lives without the headache relationships, marriage and children can bring. 🤷🏻♀️
Looking the way I choose to live, you could say that I take part in the movement (4B), but in reality I just want peace. Infortunally, in today's society, the cost of reproduction is mainly for the women.

More South Korean women goes to universities than Korean men, they earn more money (given the job and jobtitle is the same), they don't have to serve in the army for 2 years (so they start their education and career earlier than men), more Korean women initiate divorce and the Korean divorce court is extremely favorable for women, you can sue any men SO EASILY in Korea even for a false accusation (and the entire law system is favorable to women) so men are afraid of doing anything with Korean women. i'm a Korean currently living in Korea, so idk what all the foreingers pretending to be "experts" of Korean society are talking about. They think South Korea is some outdated medieval style patriarchy society when it's even more radically feminized than most Western countries now. there's a huge movement among Korean men basically affirming to never touch or do anything with Korean women because it's a legitimate legal danger to them that can ruin one's life entirely.
In SK it’s so difficult for women. They are treated badly and some have lots of problems with their bosses, sexism,etc. If you are a mother it’s difficult to find a job again. That’s not an friendly environment to raise children. It’s logical that lots of them don’t want kids because of all the disadvantages they have to face then. There’s a lot going wrong that leaded to this.
Even if you are a father, it is a very difficult environment. Since the wife cannot get a job, the husband has to cover all the income while overworked, and it is also difficult to use parental leave stipulated by law at work. It is not just difficult for women, but it is a harsh workplace culture for young women and young men. Most of the people in the high-ranking positions in the workplace are in their 50s, and 60s. A hell exploiting the younger generation.
I am 28 and I never realized I am unintentionally following the 4b movement. I never dated, will not date either in the future, and am not gonna marry or want to have kids as well.
My Korean gf and her friends told me that feminism is harshly frowned upon in Korea. They blame feminism for the reason the birth rate is low. If you are found to be a feminist you can get bullied online and they go as far as to ask your workplace to fire you. Birth rates are not bc of 4B. A lot of people don't know that hong kong (I believe lower than s. korea), japan, and china's birthrates are low as well. This is what tends to happen in rapid growing late stage capitalist countries. It becomes hard to raise families and buy homes. The USA is following the same trend soon. Politicians are worried birthrates will fall to near 1 and below in the near future for gen z and alpha. Even Canada is 1.33 right now bc of the cost of living.

So proud of these women of my birth country. I’m 52 y.o. and I’m hopeful that they understand the impact inequality has on a society. Looks like they still need to learn that feminism isn’t about hating men. That’s the initial emotion to blame men, but the real issue is about human rights.
It also should not be about telling woman what they have to do or must not do but about empowering woman to do what they wan't to do. Telling woman they should not marry, have children, etc. is as bad as telling them that they should do all these things.

i am a Korean and I am a civil servant. Most of my co-workers have two children. Many employees have three children, which is rare in Korea. Civil servants have low wages, but it is a good environment to raise children. This is not the case for ordinary private companies. The birth rate is low because Korean society is always comparable to others, and competition is fierce and material is important, and it is difficult to raise children. It is not because it is a male-dominant society. Women have a higher status than men in their families, me and the couples around them

I applaud the last woman in the video. It is most definitely important to find out how, you as a couple, can resolve disagreement. Married 30 years, I think it is my responsibility to lead my family. But lead where? Ultimately I want to lead them to a happy and satisfied place. It is important to intimately know how those you are leading are feeling and what their needs are. It is crucial that those feelings and needs be shared. No one can hit a target when they don’t know what they are aiming for. One of the most self destructive habits of many some is to just assume that men should know how they feel or what they want.

This world is actually male-dominated society and that domination is real, Men have certain roles : intimidating and protecting, and both roles have been needed in so-called patriachical society. And also their hormones drives them into doing all sorts of crazy things when they reach their puberty. after the Korean war, third or fourth generation of parents' indoctrinating and delusive schooling effort made their children vulnerable in every side except making a good grade in school. Their growth went perfectly with online revolution. and All kind of distorted malicious male culture successfully settled on online. this polluted online trend meets the other side of extremity. There are same breeds on the extremity of male and female side, I think. The biggest misconception in the current and historical system is that all men win and no woman wins. But that's not accurate at all, the vast majority of men are just peasants, and women who the men in power like, are given a free ride to success.
It is possible for more than one thing to be unfair at the same time. Women are joining feminist groups to fight for fairness. So the males could also form a group to fight against the unfair compulsory service.
@@I_am_Raziel South Korea actually has a higher population density than India (515 vs 481/sq km), and has almost no natural resources to cope. Even if you raise kids to be talented and highly educated, there are no jobs cuz competition is so high, low birth rate is not automatically bad, it's actually the solution to a lot of the issue the younger generation are having.
I don’t see how people can divorce feminism from the economy. Feminism is an economic choice. A choice not to be a poor mother or an indebted wife and mother. Feminism and the economy go hand in hand.

@@tee_thee 1) If you go to (MIT Sloan School) and you write down SK paygap you’ll see the reasons why. There are more men working in SK . On average people in Seoul make more than people in Incheon. There’s a regional paygap but is not opression nor morally wrong nor evil. Circumstances are different and Seoul makes more money that’s all.

In countries where many women have post secondary education, the birth rate goes down dramatically, and regardless of the label put on them, they are much more "feminist" in their outlook than countries wherein women have low education. By feminist I mean women EXPECT to have equal rights as men, equal chance for jobs, value career over having children, and so on. I hope we get to the point where these traits are not under the term "feminism" but rather things that both women and men accept as the norm. Seeing as human resources is one of the most important resources we have, we have wasted 50% of that for millennia. We gotta do better.
That's a very subjective view to say they are being wasted in terms of dollars and cents. A lot of them would prefer raising a family and have somebody else earn money, cuz even in the most "equal" societies, most women do relatively low-pay unskilled jobs that they wish they could escape, cashiers, waitresses, supermarkets are the realistic jobs most of them will be in. if you think the alternative to the traditional role is most of them becoming engineers, doctors, corporate superstars, that's just unrealistic.
Other factors affect this obviously, but basically as two household income became the median, two household income has now become the minimum to stay in the median. We have lost the narrative of equal rights for women who "choose" to go in the workplace. They gotta work. It hadn't been a waste of human resources. They've just be reallocated to different and new production lines of society.

I mean to say that the potential for women IF THEY CHOOSE to do other things than stay at home raising children was systemically barred for millennia. That they contributed to social well being is without question. But it is a fact that they were considered chattel for thousands of years, barred from attaining high education, from having jobs that were traditionally for men only, etc. Men were expected to be the breadwinner, and society looked down upon them if they shirked this responsibility. However, they were not legally barred from staying at home or have no job or do what was normally expected of for women. In short, the waste I'm talking about is the potential for women to contribute in ways other than through traditional means. That potential was always granted to men but not women.

If they chose to attain higher education, there were legally allowed as opposed to women.

The idea that most of the jobs at that time is a privilige that woman would want, I mean even till today most women avoid those kinds of jobs. The problem is when you think of women not being allowed to work, you think of women not being allowed to be doctors , lawyers, engineers, when realistically iif they had the "privilige" of being able to work, they could've only been janitors, garbageman, construction workers, unless they are born into a noble family, which obviously is a small minority.
Well I can say that it's different depends on what groups they belong to. I'm 30 years old korean woman, many of my friends engage in 4B movement intentionally. For me it's not a minor thing, very common thing.
If you intentionally surround yourself with those people, then you'll find only those people. I also live in Korea and am in late 20's but i barely see any people participating in 4B movement. I have friends who are feminists and they got married too. Not only them most of my friends want to get married someday, but their life just doesn't let them that easily. Your situation is probably what a lot of people will refer to as 우물 안 개구리.

As far as i experienced in my time in Korea and also from Korean exchange students in my homecountry, feminist movement are in general the "new" movements are barely expistent in Korea. I am glad for that. Like you said, it isnt about equality anymore.
It only happens this way in Korea because of the rampant sexism that has engrained deep within the society for generations. I could list many things but the domestic abuse and violence in dating amongst Korean men has become so normalised and being brushed over only signifies how patriarchal the Korean society are.
That's what being a feminist mean in the West. I am a feminist with that definition. But in SK the very term "feminism" implies "radical feminism". That's the reason just chill, normal korean man would frown upon bsing a feminist.
I really enjoyed researching feminism and other social issues in south korea. Patriarchy is so much bigger, there, compared to other OECD countries. Just interesting to have such a massive economical growth but not really advancing their social system fast enough.
Originally, the older and current generations in Korea grew up in completely different industrial structures, so their ways of thinking are entirely different. Therefore, Korea shouldn't be interpreted simplistically. If I were to say, "America is a country where the slave system was deeply entrenched,"rn. how would you feel?
There’s a certain group of people blaming the 4b movement or feminism for low birth rates when a majority of the population aren’t even aware of it, or refuse to identify with it. It’s really sad. How about looking into how difficult it is to survive right now, the experiences of wives who work 9-7 subject to work pressures just as much as their husbands, while doing majority of the housework and child-rearing, add to that the difficulty of pregnancy… and sometimes without the help of their husbands?
As a man, I've always been a feminist ever since I was a kid, I often questioned the shit that women go through. The belief that "it's a man's world" never made sense to me so I didn't accept it. Imagine your daughter, mother, Aunty, sister, girlfriend/wife, friend or just any woman in general being unfairly treated, abused etc, I would fight anyone to protect my loved ones and women's rights, Infact everyone's rights. People who lack empathy are narcissists and they are ruining the world. Empathy is one of the most important traits because it gives us the ability to view things from different perspectives, to mirror someone's life and understand what they're going through. Empathy connects us, keeps us balanced and caring for each other. If we didn't have it, peace and love as you know it wouldn't exist. We had to pass through the legs of / through a woman to be here, we need women so treat them with love and treat them as equals. Feminism isn't just the works of human's awareness and desire for change, it's the doing of evolution. With every action, there's a reaction, that's a scientific fact. So it's no surprise that the world is becoming more aware and fighting for equality and positive changes. As someone who loves science and philosophy - my philosophical view of the universe is that "we are the universe experiencing and understanding itself and finding purpose." One of the obvious purposes in life is to survive. So women all over the world, go live your life, survive and do what makes you happy, ignore the brainless haters. Most of that is self-inflicted. Typical Korean family spend all their income on private tutoring classes to pass the entrance exams, expensive baby clothes/accessories, and other needless status symbols that does nothing to raise children properly, but only harms them. Cut out all that needless costs, and SKorea is one of the most affordable places to raise children, due to all the free subsidized government support, including free lunches in schools, free daycare, generous monthly baby cash bonuses, and first choice for government subsidized cheaper housing. The Korean competitive environment will soon disappear also, as there are less and less younger people and more and more jobs will have no people. Millions of older baby boomer Koreans are going to be retiring in the next 5 years, and there's not enough young folks to fill those jobs.

As a Korean, let me explain the current situation in Korea. Currently, the country is at the height of gender conflict, and they are quiet offline but only speak ill of each other online. This situation was not just created recently, but a topic that began to burn up a little over a decade or two ago. There is also something foreigners should not misunderstand, and Korean feminism is never intended to eliminate "sex discrimination." They are 99 percent radical feminists and speak out only for the benefit of "biological women." We call them "buffet feminism." They avoid responsibility and cherry-pick only their own interests. One of the reasons gender conflict is getting serious now that, beyond the rise of women's human rights, reverse discrimination among young men is currently emerging. Of course, from the 1950s to the 1980s to the 1990s, Korea was in a patriarchal atmosphere, but the problem is that women in their teens and 30s who are not discriminated against women force their sacrifice on men in their teens and 30s who have never discriminated against women in modern society. And what's even funnier is that the people at the forefront of this movement are really men in their 50s and 60s who really smashed women's rights, and that's not all. South Korea is currently at a truce with North Korea, and men with good physical health through conscription have almost two years of national defense. Now, the military has been overhauled a lot, but only 10 years ago, they were paid about $70 a month. It gets less and less as we go back in time. We risk not being able to go home for two years in our feisty twenties and dying in training. Just a few days ago, two trainees died. But up until this point, the men didn't care about women not going to the military. Rather, the idea was that I would sacrifice myself because I couldn't put my mother, girlfriend, sister, and sister in danger. But as time went on, women started to take it for granted. They joke that men grow up to go to the military without even going to the military. Would you believe some women mocking soldiers who died in small battles with North Korea or died in training? And all they're saying is, have we sent our troops back? You know what these feminists said, even though they were giving small marks to men who had done their military duty as compensation for applying for civil service? This led to the disappearance of the score - women can't even go to the military, but only men can score points. (Women can actually join the military as cadres, not regular soldiers). Since then, there have been occasions such as scuttling soldiers to a free coffee event at a Starbucks, and disparaging men under 180 cm as losers. There will be numerous instances, if you look them up. But the truth is, this is not the end. Politicians are also responsible for igniting gender conflict. They provide about $4,400 for women's apartments, women's parking lots, prostitution subsidies (which is illegal in Korea), and Koreans' men of national merit receive about $146 a month. South Korea has a very high poverty rate and suicide rate among the elderly. Well, the gender conflict in Korea means that many complex elements are intertwined. And this gender conflict naturally affects the fertility rate, but in fact, Korea's current national pension and real estate problems are quite big. Because people in their 40s and 60s who lived in the patriarchal era are sucking the blood of young people, the fertility rate in Korea will never rise. Because Korean politicians are only trying to get votes, so they only put out policies for baby boomers, 40s and 60s, and the fact that real estate prices don't go down. One more thing: There is currently a female conscription service as a hot potato. Because the number of soldiers being recruited at a time when the birth rate is decreasing, and this is directly related to security. But politicians will "never" try to implement a female conscription service. Why? They don't want to lose women's votes. As an alternative, they are lowering the bar for conscription, thereby taking in more men who are mentally challenged or unwell. Who knows? Maybe they are trying to extend their military service. The last thing I want to say is that there is a growing number of pessimists in Korea. In a few decades, Korea will become a naturally extinct country haha.🤣
The problem with Korea is there is no equal pay for women and men - men make more money because they can not have a baby. This is thinking from the stone age. One thing I am proud of the U.S. is we have equal pay.

The vibe I get is feminism used to be fashionable but it is not anymore. The real issue is super competitive society and super charged hypergamy. By the time men and women think they are successful enough to marry (especially given high housing cost, etc.), they are well into 30''s and are very picky. Recently men have been pushing back partially in reaction to militant feminism and golddiggers - they don't want to marry old women. Things will continue to get worse before getting better, and there will be a lost generation - refer to "makeinu" in Japan which had similar social problems in the past.

Based of what I've learned from my korean friends, they dont want to marry nor have children because 1.Extremely expensive to have a family in SK 2. Women are valuaing their careers more now than before 3. Household chores and expectations weight on women 4. Unrealistic social pressure and expectations The 4B movement is a radical very niche group in Korea which explains why many Koreans havent heard of it. Unrelated to the subject of this video: I am so impressed with the women he interviewed. They were courteous, they were respectful, and they were all feminine and beautiful. Even the young ladies who spoke positively on the feminist movement were open to discussing their viewpoint. Some people may not find this amazing but coming from the U.S. it is not normal for a man to be able to ask women questions and have an informed conversation and not be in conflict with each other.
Love how you interview. Inquisitive yet polite. I will also say these women seem very articulate. Many are also careful to qualify their opinions as their own and they admit they may not know everything about the topic. Refreshing.

A lot of these movements start around people wanting to make money off of other people's anger and despair. Case in point, the founder preaching one thing, then getting married herself. The biggest problem in Korea currently is that the majority of the economy is centred in Seoul, and that city is too expensive to live in comfortably for the majority of Koreans...yet they need to work there to maximize their professional opportunities. Korea would do well to try to invest in economic zones in other parts of the country to spread out the opportunities and population density.

Very interesting. I am an American woman and I am really starting to have doubts about these ideas about what women supposedly want because there is a pattern all over the world now where women start rejecting traditional gendered expectations as soon as we have enough freedom to do so. I mean - you hear “traditional”/conservative men in the U.S. tell it, women are brainwashed by feminism into believing we don’t want them or their children or to have a family with them, and yet you go all the way to South Korea, a completely different culture, way of life, history, etc. and it’s the same thing. Even though only a small number of women explicitly identify themselves as “4B”, Korea has the lowest birthrate in the world. And the women tend to go to university and have careers so obviously there has to be something to the idea that “men, marriage, and children are not default pathways to fulfillment for women” if this pattern is permeating societies all across the globe.
You assume that career women are in fact fulfilled and got everything they were looking for but the skyrocketing rates of women on anti-depressant suggests otherwise.
It has been quite well documented that the reason young couples in Korea aren't having babies is almost always financial. Feminist groups in Korea have unfortunately always been on the extreme end of the spectrum, think Megalia and Womad, and have very little respect among either men or women.

They encouraged violence against men and boys and their website had postings bragging about animal abuse, and spewed extreme hatred towards gay and transgender people. A female schoolteacher in Korea posted about assaulting one of her young male students and one of their members in Australia even posted a video of her raping a boy. She was arrested and I believe is still in custody. This information is all readily available and quite easy to find with just a google search. Yes, their justification was always that they were just "Mirroring everyday sexism'" but even if that was how the movement started out it backfired badly. Unfortunately this has become the face of feminism in Korea, and has made it much harder for women to come out as feminists for fear of being associated with that type of extremism.
4B movement isn’t as popular as I thought it was. Seems like most korean women still want to marry and have kids. It feels similar to the UK where most millennials and gen z aren’t getting married or having kids because it’s too expensive. And they probably still live with their parents so it’s hard to start their own family
I love individual choice!❤ Certainly even as a kid I NEVER CARED THE THOUGHT to having kids. And now of course..not! Don't have the mind for it let alone intrest. Plus I love a lot of things and not feather babies. Also the practical parts.
Once you've done it you realise all the other activities are really unfulfilling by comparison. Its biology. We are wired that way. Don't be fooled about t he need for money or more rights.

As a Korean, I have never heard of the 4B moment. It's just a shadowy culture that only happens online. Foreigners, don't exaggerate. The reason the birth rate is low is because of materialism.

The reason not to have children is a woman’s decision, sometimes supported by a feminist man. Do not underestimate the decision of women and of the men that support them. If you are pressured by a patriarchal and demanding society to compete, have money and be the best, it is not a materialistic choice. It’s a protecting one.

I think some of the comments were somewhat correct. There are economic and social reasons why couples are foregoing having children. If a single income family cannot bear the costs of having children then the wife must also have to find a job. But wives who work also bear most of the burden of housework and child care. That makes most woment hesitant to marry or have a child.

Anna was very professional and well thought as always. its interesting that 4b keeps coming up and I now hear it being brought up an awful lot in the U.S.. in conjunction with our rapidly declining birthrates. The truth is, this is something that media and government seem to be bringing to the forefront in order to point misplaced blame. The truth about our declining birthrates is very much as Anna clearly stated: it is an economic issue, it is an issue of policy failure. People can barely afford to take care of themselves anymore. The average cost of a home, where I live is over a million dollars and the price keeps rising despite the fact that so many of them sit empty, and the average employee salary is barely enough to cover rent. Rising inflation related to food is completely out of control. People are just acknowledging a growing problem with no end in site and are doing the responsible thing by not creating families. Also (and I admit I learned a lot about this from Park JImin (no joke) ) feminism, even radical feminism, is about true equality...full stop. There needs to be more differentiation between the different movements, so as not to stoke hate based on misunderstandings.

It's extremely insulting to even suggest that everyday people that do medical and engineering school for 10 years, and dedicate their lives to improving human life are so flippant with trials and tests.

I heard about the Korean 4B movement in 2020 when it was at its peak. It was in online news because Korean men were upset about a guesture on an ad. But it really doesn’t matter if most Korean women don’t know about 4B. Or many could be practicing 4B and moving in silence. However, some Western women have decided to give it a go. Actually, there have been pockets of western women “Decentering Men” (similar to 4B) long before someone decided to name it West 4B. The one comment I don’t understand is how 4B equates to hating men. Choosing not to date, marry, procreate or have intimate relationships with a man doesn’t mean you hate men. Maybe these women simply want peaceful, stress-free lives without the headache relationships, marriage and children can bring. 🤷🏻♀️
Looking the way I choose to live, you could say that I take part in the movement (4B), but in reality I just want peace. Infortunally, in today's society, the cost of reproduction is mainly for the women.

And there have been numerous cases where women falsely accused men for sxual assault to extort money, resulting in the death of men's social and professional life even if proven to be innocent. They DEFINITELY don't want a peaceful stress-free life.

I heard in Korea (or some Asian countries) that it's basically like giving your life to housework, children, and your husband. I don't blame Korean women at ALL for not wanting to be held down in such a gross way.
More South Korean women goes to universities than Korean men, they earn more money (given the job and jobtitle is the same), they don't have to serve in the army for 2 years (so they start their education and career earlier than men), more Korean women initiate divorce and the Korean divorce court is extremely favorable for women, you can sue any men SO EASILY in Korea even for a false accusation (and the entire law system is favorable to women) so men are afraid of doing anything with Korean women. i'm a Korean currently living in Korea, so idk what all the foreingers pretending to be "experts" of Korean society are talking about. They think South Korea is some outdated medieval style patriarchy society when it's even more radically feminized than most Western countries now. there's a huge movement among Korean men basically affirming to never touch or do anything with Korean women because it's a legitimate legal danger to them that can ruin one's life entirely.

In SK it’s so difficult for women. They are treated badly and some have lots of problems with their bosses, sexism,etc. If you are a mother it’s difficult to find a job again. That’s not an friendly environment to raise children. It’s logical that lots of them don’t want kids because of all the disadvantages they have to face then. There’s a lot going wrong that leaded to this.
Even if you are a father, it is a very difficult environment. Since the wife cannot get a job, the husband has to cover all the income while overworked, and it is also difficult to use parental leave stipulated by law at work. It is not just difficult for women, but it is a harsh workplace culture for young women and young men. Most of the people in the high-ranking positions in the workplace are in their 50s, and 60s. A hell exploiting the younger generation.

Korean women in their 20s and 30s were the most materialistic, had the lowest gratitude index (the degree to which they felt gratitude), and had the highest level of neuroticism (emotional anxiety). They also had a high tendency to compare themselves to others.
Birth rates are not bc of 4B. A lot of people don't know that hong kong (I believe lower than s. korea), japan, and china's birthrates are low as well. This is what tends to happen in rapid growing late stage capitalist countries. It becomes hard to raise families and buy homes. The USA is following the same trend soon. Politicians are worried birthrates will fall to near 1 and below in the near future for gen z and alpha. Even Canada is 1.33 right now bc of the cost of living.
The relatively high birth rates in the United States and Europe are due to the high birth rates of immigrants. And more than 60% are children born out of wedlock there.

i am a Korean and I am a civil servant. Most of my co-workers have two children. Many employees have three children, which is rare in Korea. Civil servants have low wages, but it is a good environment to raise children. This is not the case for ordinary private companies. The birth rate is low because Korean society is always comparable to others, and competition is fierce and material is important, and it is difficult to raise children. I applaud the last woman in the video. It is most definitely important to find out how, you as a couple, can resolve disagreement. Married 30 years, I think it is my responsibility to lead my family. But lead where? Ultimately I want to lead them to a happy and satisfied place. It is important to intimately know how those you are leading are feeling and what their needs are. It is crucial that those feelings and needs be shared. No one can hit a target when they don’t know what they are aiming for. One of the most self destructive habits of many some is to just assume that men should know how they feel or what they want.
People need to understand that in Korea if you say you are a feminist, it's a huge target on your back from the incel-ish type men who make up A LOT of men here. A lot of Korean culture is not verbalizing things. Plenty of the ppl who said they don't know it, do know it.

This world is actually male-dominated society and that domination is real, Men have certain roles : intimidating and protecting, and both roles have been needed in so-called patriachical society. Even if you raise kids to be talented and highly educated, there are no jobs cuz competition is so high, low birth rate is not automatically bad, it's actually the solution to a lot of the issue the younger generation are having.

3) I’ve watched many videos about korean families and daily vlogs from Korea and all the men were involved in daily chores. And probably must of the fixings and reparations are done by men anyway so it seems to be 50/50.

4) Most of the pressure I see online about female bodies is from other women. Korean society is extremely competitive and superficial, is not a feminist problem is a societal problem. And women in 2024 are way more fixated with how they look than women in 1924 so is not like feminism is doing nothing to change that. Makeup, fashion, surgeries, fitness, purses, shoes…in 2024 are billion dollar industries. Maybe women just like to feel pretty. But I agree it can be too much specially for young women. The solution? 1) If you go to (MIT Sloan School) and you write down SK paygap you’ll see the reasons why. There are more men working in SK . On average people in Seoul make more than people in Incheon. There’s a regional paygap but is not opression nor morally wrong nor evil. Circumstances are different and Seoul makes more money that’s all.

In countries where many women have post secondary education, the birth rate goes down dramatically, and regardless of the label put on them, they are much more "feminist" in their outlook than countries wherein women have low education. By feminist I mean women EXPECT to have equal rights as men, equal chance for jobs, value career over having children, and so on.
I hope we get to the point where these traits are not under the term "feminism" but rather things that both women and men accept as the norm. Seeing as human resources is one of the most important resources we have, we have wasted 50% of that for millennia. We gotta do better.
That's a very subjective view to say they are being wasted in terms of dollars and cents. A lot of them would prefer raising a family and have somebody else earn money, cuz even in the most "equal" societies, most women do relatively low-pay unskilled jobs that they wish they could escape, cashiers, waitresses, supermarkets are the realistic jobs most of them will be in. if you think the alternative to the traditional role is most of them becoming engineers, doctors, corporate superstars, that's just unrealistic.
Other factors affect this obviously, but basically as two household income became the median, two household income has now become the minimum to stay in the median. We have lost the narrative of equal rights for women who "choose" to go in the workplace. They gotta work. It hadn't been a waste of human resources. They've just be reallocated to different and new production lines of society.
@@kumbawolf I should clarify what I mean by "wasted" for I agree with much of what you posted. I mean to say that the potential for women IF THEY CHOOSE to do other things than stay at home raising children was systemically barred for millennia.
That they contributed to social well being is without question. But it is a fact that they were considered chattel for thousands of years, barred from attaining high education, from having jobs that were traditionally for men only, etc.
Men were expected to be the breadwinner, and society looked down upon them if they shirked this responsibility. However, they were not legally barred from staying at home or have no job or do what was normally expected of for women.
In short, the waste I'm talking about is the potential for women to contribute in ways other than through traditional means. That potential was always granted to men but not women.

Were men legally barred from staying at home instead of working? They would have been denigrated, sure, but there was no law to prevent them from staying at home and doing housework and raising kids if they so chose. If they chose to attain higher education, there were legally allowed as opposed to women.

The idea that most of the jobs at that time is a privilige that woman would want, I mean even till today most women avoid those kinds of jobs. The problem is when you think of women not being allowed to work, you think of women not being allowed to be doctors , lawyers, engineers, when realistically iif they had the "privilige" of being able to work, they could've only been janitors, garbageman, construction workers, unless they are born into a noble family, which obviously is a small minority.
Well I can say that it's different depends on what groups they belong to. I'm 30 years old korean woman, many of my friends engage in 4B movement intentionally. For me it's not a minor thing, very common thing.

If you intentionally surround yourself with those people, then you'll find only those people. I also live in Korea and am in late 20's but i barely see any people participating in 4B movement. I have friends who are feminists and they got married too. Not only them most of my friends want to get married someday, but their life just doesn't let them that easily. Your situation is probably what a lot of people will refer to as 우물 안 개구리.

As far as i experienced in my time in Korea and also from Korean exchange students in my homecountry, feminist movement are in general the "new" movements are barely expistent in Korea. I am glad for that. Like you said, it isnt about equality anymore.

I really enjoyed researching feminism and other social issues in south korea. Patriarchy is so much bigger, there, compared to other OECD countries. Just interesting to have such a massive economical growth but not really advancing their social system fast enough.

There’s a certain group of people blaming the 4b movement or feminism for low birth rates when a majority of the population aren’t even aware of it, or refuse to identify with it. It’s really sad. How about looking into how difficult it is to survive right now, the experiences of wives who work 9-7 subject to work pressures just as much as their husbands, while doing majority of the housework and child-rearing, add to that the difficulty of pregnancy… and sometimes without the help of their husbands?

As a man, I've always been a feminist ever since I was a kid, I often questioned the shit that women go through. The belief that "it's a man's world" never made sense to me so I didn't accept it. Imagine your daughter, mother, Aunty, sister, girlfriend/wife, friend or just any woman in general being unfairly treated, abused etc, I would fight anyone to protect my loved ones and women's rights, Infact everyone's rights.
People who lack empathy are narcissists and they are ruining the world. Empathy is one of the most important traits because it gives us the ability to view things from different perspectives, to mirror someone's life and understand what they're going through. Empathy connects us, keeps us balanced and caring for each other. If we didn't have it, peace and love as you know it wouldn't exist.
We had to pass through the legs of / through a woman to be here, we need women so treat them with love and treat them as equals. Feminism isn't just the works of human's awareness and desire for change, it's the doing of evolution. With every action, there's a reaction, that's a scientific fact. So it's no surprise that the world is becoming more aware and fighting for equality and positive changes.
As someone who loves science and philosophy - my philosophical view of the universe is that "we are the universe experiencing and understanding itself and finding purpose." One of the obvious purposes in life is to survive. So women all over the world, go live your life, survive and do what makes you happy, ignore the brainless haters. Low birth rate in Korea is because it's so expensive to raise your kids in this Korean competitive environment
Most of that is self-inflicted. Typical Korean family spend all their income on private tutoring classes to pass the entrance exams, expensive baby clothes/accessories, and other needless status symbols that does nothing to raise children properly, but only harms them. Cut out all that needless costs, and SKorea is one of the most affordable places to raise children, due to all the free subsidized government support, including free lunches in schools, free daycare, generous monthly baby cash bonuses, and first choice for government subsidized cheaper housing. The Korean competitive environment will soon disappear also, as there are less and less younger people and more and more jobs will have no people. Millions of older baby boomer Koreans are going to be retiring in the next 5 years, and there's not enough young folks to fill those jobs.

As a Korean, let me explain the current situation in Korea. Currently, the country is at the height of gender conflict, and they are quiet offline but only speak ill of each other online. This situation was not just created recently, but a topic that began to burn up a little over a decade or two ago. There is also something foreigners should not misunderstand, and Korean feminism is never intended to eliminate "sex discrimination." They are 99 percent radical feminists and speak out only for the benefit of "biological women." We call them "buffet feminism." They avoid responsibility and cherry-pick only their own interests. One of the reasons gender conflict is getting serious now that, beyond the rise of women's human rights, reverse discrimination among young men is currently emerging. Of course, from the 1950s to the 1980s to the 1990s, Korea was in a patriarchal atmosphere, but the problem is that women in their teens and 30s who are not discriminated against women force their sacrifice on men in their teens and 30s who have never discriminated against women in modern society. And what's even funnier is that the people at the forefront of this movement are really men in their 50s and 60s who really smashed women's rights, and that's not all.
South Korea is currently at a truce with North Korea, and men with good physical health through conscription have almost two years of national defense. Now, the military has been overhauled a lot, but only 10 years ago, they were paid about $70 a month. It gets less and less as we go back in time. We risk not being able to go home for two years in our feisty twenties and dying in training. Just a few days ago, two trainees died. But up until this point, the men didn't care about women not going to the military. Rather, the idea was that I would sacrifice myself because I couldn't put my mother, girlfriend, sister, and sister in danger. But as time went on, women started to take it for granted. They joke that men grow up to go to the military without even going to the military. Would you believe some women mocking soldiers who died in small battles with North Korea or died in training? And all they're saying is, have we sent our troops back? You know what these feminists said, even though they were giving small marks to men who had done their military duty as compensation for applying for civil service? This led to the disappearance of the score - women can't even go to the military, but only men can score points. (Women can actually join the military as cadres, not regular soldiers). Since then, there have been occasions such as scuttling soldiers to a free coffee event at a Starbucks, and disparaging men under 180 cm as losers. There will be numerous instances, if you look them up. But the truth is, this is not the end. Politicians are also responsible for igniting gender conflict. They provide about $4,400 for women's apartments, women's parking lots, prostitution subsidies (which is illegal in Korea), and Koreans' men of national merit receive about $146 a month. South Korea has a very high poverty rate and suicide rate among the elderly.
Well, the gender conflict in Korea means that many complex elements are intertwined.
And this gender conflict naturally affects the fertility rate, but in fact, Korea's current national pension and real estate problems are quite big. Because people in their 40s and 60s who lived in the patriarchal era are sucking the blood of young people, the fertility rate in Korea will never rise.
Because Korean politicians are only trying to get votes, so they only put out policies for baby boomers, 40s and 60s, and the fact that real estate prices don't go down.
One more thing: There is currently a female conscription service as a hot potato. Because the number of soldiers being recruited at a time when the birth rate is decreasing, and this is directly related to security. But politicians will "never" try to implement a female conscription service. Why? They don't want to lose women's votes. As an alternative, they are lowering the bar for conscription, thereby taking in more men who are mentally challenged or unwell. Who knows? Maybe they are trying to extend their military service.
The last thing I want to say is that there is a growing number of pessimists in Korea. In a few decades, Korea will become a naturally extinct country haha.🤣
The problem with Korea is there is no equal pay for women and men - men make more money because they can not have a baby. This is thinking from the stone age. One thing I am proud of the U.S. is we have equal pay.

The vibe I get is feminism used to be fashionable but it is not anymore. The real issue is super competitive society and super charged hypergamy. By the time men and women think they are successful enough to marry (especially given high housing cost, etc.), they are well into 30''s and are very picky. Recently men have been pushing back partially in reaction to militant feminism and golddiggers - they don't want to marry old women. Things will continue to get worse before getting better, and there will be a lost generation - refer to "makeinu" in Japan which had similar social problems in the past.
It would be interesting to have this video with more people and maybe 30 minutes to cover wider range of opinions.
I mean I get it it’s too expensive and as a woman in the Korean culture you are a slave for the family side of the men I heard that from Korean friends they say that’s why they don’t want to marry Korean men + I heard they are a lot of cases who the men abused the woman
Based of what I've learned from my korean friends, they dont want to marry nor have children because
1.Extremely expensive to have a family in SK
2. Women are valuaing their careers more now than before
3. Household chores and expectations weight on women
4. Unrealistic social pressure and expectations
The 4B movement is a radical very niche group in Korea which explains why many Koreans havent heard of it.

SK issue with birth rate is happening everywhere and there is no turn back to it. Unfortunately, Korea has a huge challenge regarding their population, look forward to see what else will the gov employ to kind of remediate this threat.

Unrelated to the subject of this video: I am so impressed with the women he interviewed. They were courteous, they were respectful, and they were all feminine and beautiful. Even the young ladies who spoke positively on the feminist movement were open to discussing their viewpoint. Some people may not find this amazing but coming from the U.S. it is not normal for a man to be able to ask women questions and have an informed conversation and not be in conflict with each other.
That's the stereotype of East-Asian women, feminine, academic.

I will also say these women seem very articulate. Many are also careful to qualify their opinions as their own and they admit they may not know everything about the topic. Refreshing.

A lot of these movements start around people wanting to make money off of other people's anger and despair. Case in point, the founder preaching one thing, then getting married herself.
The biggest problem in Korea currently is that the majority of the economy is centred in Seoul, and that city is too expensive to live in comfortably for the majority of Koreans...yet they need to work there to maximize their professional opportunities. Korea would do well to try to invest in economic zones in other parts of the country to spread out the opportunities and population density.
I feel like except for that lovely queer lady, lots of them are not thinking about the bigger picture and not really understanding the full context of these ideas, nobody is against falling in love smh

I born in the 80´s and for me feminism was about "equality", but nowdays if you say you are feminist people think you hate men, and it is not like that....About 4B movement...I think that is a personal desicion and maybe they have their own reasons. Thank you for these interviews.
More ppl unintentionally support the movement. Even if the leader marries more are participating owing to how hard life is becoming to subsist.

This was good. answered some questions for me.
Very interesting. I am an American woman and I am really starting to have doubts about these ideas about what women supposedly want because there is a pattern all over the world now where women start rejecting traditional gendered expectations as soon as we have enough freedom to do so. I mean - you hear “traditional”/conservative men in the U.S. tell it, women are brainwashed by feminism into believing we don’t want them or their children or to have a family with them, and yet you go all the way to South Korea, a completely different culture, way of life, history, etc. and it’s the same thing.
Even though only a small number of women explicitly identify themselves as “4B”, Korea has the lowest birthrate in the world. And the women tend to go to university and have careers so obviously there has to be something to the idea that “men, marriage, and children are not default pathways to fulfillment for women” if this pattern is permeating societies all across the globe.
You assume that career women are in fact fulfilled and got everything they were looking for but the skyrocketing rates of women on anti-depressant suggests otherwise.

It has been quite well documented that the reason young couples in Korea aren't having babies is almost always financial. Feminist groups in Korea have unfortunately always been on the extreme end of the spectrum, think Megalia and Womad, and have very little respect among either men or women.
@@adamhall7720 from what I know megalia wasn't extremist tho, they just were trolls who mirrored what they perceived as everyday sexism on angry men on the Internet, they were more feminist trolls than anything
@@noriantiri9310 Megalia and then Womad were about as extreme as one can possibly get. They encouraged violence against men and boys and their website had postings bragging about animal abuse, and spewed extreme hatred towards gay and transgender people. A female schoolteacher in Korea posted about assaulting one of her young male students and one of their members in Australia even posted a video of her raping a boy. She was arrested and I believe is still in custody. This information is all readily available and quite easy to find with just a google search. Yes, their justification was always that they were just "Mirroring everyday sexism'" but even if that was how the movement started out it backfired badly. Unfortunately this has become the face of feminism in Korea, and has made it much harder for women to come out as feminists for fear of being associated with that type of extremism.

4B movement isn’t as popular as I thought it was. Seems like most korean women still want to marry and have kids. It feels similar to the UK where most millennials and gen z aren’t getting married or having kids because it’s too expensive. And they probably still live with their parents so it’s hard to start their own family
