  • I purchased the songs in this video off of iTunes and DO NOT claim any rights to them.
    "East of River Shannon" from album The Appalachians
    "Survivors" by James Newton Howard & Joshua Bell from Defiance (Music from the Motion Picture)
    This was a project for my college course on Social Work in Appalachia. I put it on here for thought provoking purposes. I do not claim to know all there is to know about these places but have simply put forward the information I was able to find and the stories I've heard. The people who appeared in this video gave me permission to share their stories.

    I am pretty sure Aaron Pinson was like my 7th great grandfather. How cool is that? Thank you for keeping those mountains alive. . .the history there of. I tell people all the time that I literally can feel that I belong there through my bare feet when I go home.

    Talk to the older people in the community, they grew up with the stories and are often a treasure trove of history.

    Your dad sounds like a backwoods country boy. He's got the accent and everything just like I do. I want to know how you don't have an accent like any of us? You're the first country girl I ever heard without accent. Thank you for sharing these stories I love them too.

    I see I'm not the only person who thought this was a great video! I'm so surprised you haven't gotten more views. I see you did this for a class on social work, so I see why you haven't continued. Still, you do have skills! Maybe you're in the wrong profession.

      I think it's interesting that you want to visit Appalachia. I grew up and still live in eastern Kentucky. Where is it you live? I'd love to know how and where you live. It would be fun to get to know someone that dont live here, and to see how different your life is from mine.

    I KNOW this is 4+ years ago, but if you're still around UA-cam...I have one question. Do the locals in your area say Apa-latch-un or Apple-ay-shun? Always wondered. Thanks. :-)

      Dianne Steitz people do say it both ways. But the way I hear it the most is with the "latch" sound

      @diannesteitz62 7 років тому +3

      Thanks you two. I know that locals know the true way of pronouncing things. I lived in Bangor, Maine for a few months, and found out that the World pronounces it like "banger", but the locals say "ban-gore". That's just one example. Time, and time again, the locals taught me the correct way to say things. LOL

      Nope. Grew up on the west coast, and moved to the Midwest as an adult, so I could live in a town big enough for all of the conveniences, but small enough to still talk about God without feeling "weird", and get all of the Seasons. :P I call it my small slice of "Mayberry".

    I would have taken that deer skull with me, disinfected it, and painted it gold. Bones are the foundation of life. Sorry if that sounds morbid. But I did say I would disinfect it first. And it is a deer.

    Why did he totally strip it? It's like all it's history has been destroyed, he should have at least left the spring loaded trap door. I don't see anyone jumping off that bridge because you might survive that high of a fall and just be crippled! Looks like that hotel use to be huge, is there any pictures of it?

      sponge head oh yeah you know that place was gorgeous. That entryway was rather extensive! Also, I was worried about the girl trying to jump off of only 50 ft height to kill herself. That height might have only maimed her, leading to a long slow death. That doesn't mean she didn't do it though. People are idiots. People like blood sausage. Enough said LOL.

      It was being renovated. The man I interviewed was the caretaker. He lives there in a trailer so people don’t come and vandalize it while they’re renovating it but he doesn’t own it. I know I wish it’d been left original too but I think it was falling apart.
