    Man thank you for this. I was 50/50 on which one to visit thinking they both were the same when it came to spooky culture but your explanation makes sense in their differences. Looks like ill start off with Salem but Sleepy Hollow is still a must in my list!

      @@jorgeandresvelez5479 just to follow up on this, Sleepy Hollow is getting a lot better with catering to the spooky community lately. Not saying that’s what they should be doing, but I’ve just noticed more and more events popping up on their October calendar every year. I still don’t think it compares to Salem in that sense, but they are offering a lot more events and things for people to do now that they realize it is a tourist destination. I think you’ll be better off when you do finally visit because there will be a lot more to do!

    Glad I found your video. I am super relieved that Sleepy Hollow isn't like Salem. Salem was such a tourist trap cash grab last year. Nobody in Salem wants you there they just want your money and then for you to leave. The fact it costs 50 dollars a day to park in Salem in October when any other month it is only 12 dollars really sets the tone for what a cash grab that town is. Thank you for all this information that most other people are not covering.

    Salem and Sleepy. Two different places entirely. Ive been to both for Halloween Festivities. I prefer Sleepy. The nostalga and historical ambience is so enticing in my opinion. I was captivated by Irvings story when I was a young child. This was a great video. Thank you. I think I will sub you. And................Happy Halloween. (in advance)

    LONG lines to get into sights in Salem, and you may not even be able to get a ticket. Massive traffic so get there early if you want to park anywhere near town. Lots of souvenir witchy shops and very touristy in my opinion. Not sure about Sleepy Hollow but I am sure it is more my speed with more history and charm, river views. I am sure either would be alot of fun. Older folks will have trouble with the crowds in Salem, the walking, the general Maneuvering among so many people, waiting for tables in eateries, etc.

    Sleepy Hollow and Salem are two iconic American towns steeped in folklore and history, each with its own distinctive blend of supernatural legend and real-world history. Here's a comparison between the two:
    1. Origins of Their Legends
    Sleepy Hollow (New York): Sleepy Hollow’s fame stems largely from Washington Irving's 1820 short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". The tale revolves around the ghostly figure of the Headless Horseman, who is said to haunt the small village, riding at night in search of his missing head. While Sleepy Hollow was a real town with early Dutch settlers, Irving’s fictionalized version gave it its eerie, otherworldly reputation.
    Salem (Massachusetts): Salem’s dark legacy is rooted in real historical events-the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. In this Puritan town, mass hysteria led to the execution of 20 people accused of witchcraft. The trials left an indelible mark on American history, making Salem a symbol of paranoia, injustice, and the dangers of superstition.

    Back in 1982, I rode from Cleveland (Ohio) to New England. I stopped by Salem (Massachusetts). I received quite a few stares from the locals. I had waist-length hair and beard, and I was clad from head-to-toe in black leather. Having a beautiful chopper as my ride made quite an impression on the townspeople, either. Ha! I kept envisioning me and my bike being burned at the stake by the ancestors of Puritans! Ha! All kidding aside, I loved Salem, Mass --- a bit pricey, but it was my kind of town. Oh yeah, I once visited some family in London (UK). Whilst in London, I visited Highgate cemetery. I found that to be very interesting. Thanks, Hexes and Horrors.

    This will be my 11th year in a row going to Salem. In fact I’ve been to sleepy hollow as well. The easiest way to say it, is that Salem is more commercialized. It doesn’t mean it’s bad, but hocus pocus has a huge impact to its popularity.
    If you like it more low key or a self guided tour sleepy hollow is great. I could even see it becoming as big as Salem. They would have to embrace the business model of Salem. I just don’t know if that is what they want.

    • @HexesandHorrors
      @HexesandHorrors  Місяць тому +1

      I totally agree. I think when people visit sleepy Hollow, they also expect everything to be in one walking distance area like Salem with all the shops and restaurants in one place, and that’s just not the way the town is set up. I have noticed in recent years and especially this year that they’re adding more and more events every fall, probably because they realize it’s a big tourist attraction. They released the tentative calendar for this October and I’ve never seen more events on it than there are currently. We’ll see what happens over time! Enjoy Salem!! 🎃🍂🍁

    I have been to Salem two times. First time in 2016 with my school during the weekend going into Halloween. It was way too crowded but I still managed to have fun. I went again last weekend. I had a great time and got to do more than my first visit. I will be going to Sleepy hollow next weekend to give it a try with an open mind. I definitely see the differences for sure. Both are a must I say especially since they have history.

    • @HexesandHorrors
      @HexesandHorrors  Місяць тому +1

      @@lala_looksnacks It depends what you’re trying to see. Most people park for the day and walk around. You CAN drive, and while there isn’t as much traffic as Salem, there is only one main road in and out so it does get congested unless you know your way around side streets. I would map out your stop in Sleepy Hollow based on what you want to see and then decide if you want to walk those distances between things or drive and risk sitting in traffic when you could have possibly walked. Some things are further like Lyndhurst or Irving’s former home so again it depends what you want to check out!

    I'm from East TN, so we've got many of our own Southern Gothic tales and many people are far more respectful of the supernatural. We cling to our traditions strongly here, almost fearfully so in fact. It angers me when others, locals and outsiders both, don't show the proper respect for certain locations or for the dead. Regardless of if you believe in things that can't be explained or not, one should always be respectful at the least. Nowadays, people show more respect for the sexuality of those they'll never meet than they show to the dead. Many traditions were put in place to protect people. There are places you just do not go, things you just don't do. Maybe we're more in touch with our pagan roots, more accepting of the strange. The hills hide much and there are caves only fools dare to tread. Listen to the advice of locals. Stories like Johnny Boy in Three Forks, Tate Calls, the Beast of Batley Woods, and so on aren't meant to draw curiosity, only warn you. Johnny's still trapped in the Civil War, trying to get back home. Tate Calls happen because they flooded Tate Valley when many Tates and Scales were still living there. The Beast...well, no one knows, but I've seen tracks, eyes, and heard noises that, as a hunter since boyhood, I still can't explain and I avoid that place as the moon waxes. I grew up in these woods, so I know what does and does not belong by sound, sight, and scent. Something lurks in those woods that ought not be there.

    Sleepy Hollow celebrates it’s history and has a more positive aspect and therefore free concious perspective to do so. Salem has a dark, horroric history that the government at the time of the witch trials tried to cover up. The salem approach is to own and create a more positive narrative to the dark tragedies that occurred there. Live not far from Sleepy Hollow, visit often and study the Salem history of the witch trials. This is my assessment of why they are different foundationally.
