  • Here I show you live bench tests with Logic Pro X running under Big Sur on a 13" MacBook Pro with M1 Apple Silicon. The band-waggon UA-cam "beauty studio" personalities will tell you this won't work under Rosetta. But does it? I am keeping it real with a 48 track live band session recorded at 96K. We are going to test plugins from Waves, Fabfilter, Softube and Liquidsonics. Listen to this little MacBook Pro mix the session while playing synchronised video and recording itself all at the same time.

I have been considering a M1 air (still have a 2013 Macbook Air though) as I'm a bedroom guitarist and I've parted ways with my amps and soon will be parting ways with my multi-effects processor in order to use the M1 as my new guitar interface (plug-in based). My next step is to start learning a bit about music production. Looking forward to learning more from you!

      I have used BiaxFx and I like that a lot for plugin guitar processing. Lots of people are having good results with the Helix and Kemper. I produce a band where both guitarists swap bass and guitar roles and they both have one Helix board each doing it all. I think the Helix is more versatile (cf the Kemper). I am not sure I would fully commit to a plugin only solution for GTR. I do like the direct sound of the Helix. That's what I would buy myself. I am playing less currently so no more guitar stuff for me!

      @@MarkPayneAudio Thanks for the reply Mark! I own a Helix LT and it has worked great. However, I'm looking to minimize my rig a little. I'm selling the Helix and planning to run Helix Native and Neural DSP plugins on the M1 air. I figured if I enjoy the Helix, I'll just buy the plugin version of the Helix + Neural DSP plugins (which sound superb) and use the M1 processing power while having a much lighter and smaller rig.

    Hi Mark. I have really enjoyed this and your other videos. I have ordered a M1 Pro machine and am trying to get my head around what will be compatible. This is my first foray into Macs as I have been a life-long PC user but I have just had enough of the poor real time performance I’m getting from PC. My main DAW to date has been Cubase Pro of which I have the latest version but I am very relaxed about using other DAWs so to be sure that the new machine will work straight out of the box I have bundled Logic Pro. I do have a few external plugins but only a few are critical and of these only one hasn’t been updated for Big Sur and Apple Silicon.
    Of course the base OS for the new machine will be Monterey so I am trying to second guess what will still be working when I get the machine and install everything.
    I am intrigued by this video of yours and am wondering when you installed your 3rd party plugins what you selected as versions with the intention of running in Rosetta? Were they Catalina compatible versions for Intel processors?

    Lots of useful info and insights here. I wasn’t aware that it was possible to run Logic under Rosetta as well. Makes sense for anyone buying an M1 for music production as most 3rd party plugins haven’t been ported yet. Impressed by the performance at 96K as well. It’d be super helpful if you’d make a video showing the Logic benchmark session running natively and then under Rosetta, so we can actually see the performance hit. We should expect something around 25% less tracks, I reckon, but still it would be great to know for sure.
    Thanks so much for your work. There’s so little info out there regarding M1 and music production as of now. You’re doing a big favor to our industry. :)

      Hi Mike. The truth is that I cannot show you the benchmarks running Logic in native as the whole thing is hugely unreliable interfacing with this many Intel code plugins. • @MarkPayneAudio
      @MarkPayneAudio  3 роки тому +1

      I use the Samsung T7 external SSD. They are so fast, they become invisible in terms of performance bottle necks. However I do use them on USB3.2 which is a 10Gbps bus. If your old MacBook is inly supporting USB2 then you are down at 0.5Gbps (480Mbps) and this would be slower than the SSD itself. Thats would be a shame..... If you have USB 3.0 then you are at least at around 5Gbps which is still acceptable. However, when we consider that a 48K session in logic running say 48 tracks only needs approx 60Mbps total, even USB 2 is ok.

      So yes, V11 for me. But this is still unsupported as is V12. We are still waiting on Waves for an update for M1. The common problem people have with V11 and V12 is that the plugins verify but do not appear in the plugin list when you come to add them. V11 is less prone to this issue but some people still have it.

While not exactly a replacement for the soundgrid servers (especially in the reliability department), I have a suspicion that the M1 chips running native will start to give the servers a run for their money in terms of performance.

      Hi Sean. I do agree with you. I did a lot of testing with MR Native for Waves. I have some videos on that on my channel. The new chip will kill for that already as Rosetta is working great but as of yet, none of the hardware is going to work!
      Honestly, I moved away from using Waves live. On the new Midas HD96 console I use, I have TC electronic reverbs and great on channel EQ and dynamics already. Also added are nice SSL type bus comps. I found the hassle of yet another waves update or firmware change just too risky. Also my server ran out of poke and I just... gave in with it. I do however love all this stuff for my in the box studio environment.

      @@MarkPayneAudio Honestly I don't blame you! The HD96 has a lot going for it, and I agree that running Waves live can be a hassle sometimes (I only use it if I find my X32's fx rack a bit lacking for the task at hand and I always setup a panic button that fires off a re-routing snapshot should it crash). I would love to get my hands on a HD96 sometime and give it a whirl, but alas that will have to wait (what with everything going on). Thanks for the reply and have a great day!

    Hey Mark, Just discovered your channel and am loving it. I’ve got a Mac Mini M1 16gb/256SSD arriving soon and I’m going to build it out with logic and plugins from Waves, NI, Izotope, which I’ve found some guidance around, yours being the best. But I’m a big Modo Bass and Modo Drum user and I can’t find anything on those working on an M1, assuming in Rosetta. Actually can’t find much info on any IK Multimedia plugins and M1 other than their website. Do you have any experience or thoughts on this? Thanks from Arizona.

Do you think all the third party plugins will work if we run logic in intel mode? Thank you in advance your help would mean a lot my old macbook has crashed and I have no choice and get new one. This is risky as it really depends on the plugins used. My new Mac M1 is a development machine. The intel route may be safer for you. or get an M1 and a second hand intel as well?

    Hi Mark, thanks for your excellent and informative videos and your insights on running Logic in Rosetta for stability until 3rd party plugins run natively. My M1 MBP arrives mid-Dec so this is really helpful. If you get chance, please could you kindly check, does the M1 MBP have x2 Thunderbolt controllers ie one for each port (rather than x1 controller split between the two) and are both ports full 40Gb/s bandwidth each? I hope to connect multiple external SSDs for sample libraries, a Thunderbolt audio interface & midi keyboard via dongles/dock so hope there’s adequate bandwidth allowing external SSDs to perform optimally. Many thanks 🙏🏽

    I saw many comments and complainings about the apparent "lack" of upgradability the new M1 standard puts on the Apple customers. But, again, I think Apple is the path to change the industry. If you take a closer look with attention you will see that the entire new M1 "block" resembles much like PCIe standard. So everything is mounted inside the same board and it is "connected" to the main board on some sort of socket. I am suggesting is that if Apple wants, it can go through a way where you change the entire M1 board by a new one with not only more RAM, but also more disk space, a better processor, number of cores, etc. Thats almost an entire new computer instead of simply putting more RAM, more disk, another GPU, etc. It could change the way we think about the upgrades on a computer. Instead of changing parts you change the entire SOC and "voilá": you have a brand new computer on the same hardware.

    • @MarkPayneAudio
      @MarkPayneAudio  3 роки тому +1

      Yes they get to own all of the components. The others must catch up surely? Will we see complete SOC systems from Intel? Meanwhile... Apple will be far ahead into the distance by this point?

In this situation only 1/3 of the plugins within the Mercury bundle showed up (and that was all the shit I don't use. What made a difference for me was installing onto my wife's account which as the first install account on the system rather than the secondary account I created for myself (yes this had admin rights). Also I will say that I have ALWAYS been running waves V11. Way back in these comments you will find a guy who backdated his V12 by using an offline installer downloaded from waves for V11 and that worked for him. Have you tried this? Have you raised waves support calls? We must realise that we are on a non-supported platform but I think it is important to get calls into Waves so they can look at it. They have to make this work for the future unless they want us all to go elsewhere for plugins....
