      The problem is they can only release an update that does that to Google phones. Companies like Samsung need to do it themselves. For now Google's solution is to use Google Messages app on any Android phone and it works RCS on most phones. If it doesn't there is a "hack" to get it

      They are working with a few manufacturers like Motorola and Samsung to include this by default. It's going to be turned on for everyone very soon. Already about 10% of the people I text have it.
      Of course iPhones are another story and may lay behind for a while.

      Sort of right. RCS is carrier supported and can deliver the same service to any phone no matter the brand or OS. Something iMessage can't only other instant messenger apps as FB messenger, WhatsApp and so on can do this. So maybe RCS can be useful or maybe it's too late and WhatsApp and so on has already solved that problem.

    • @BullyCanadian
      @BullyCanadian 4 роки тому +3

      Thomas Nielsen even if it technically is, it’s waaaay too late. It’s literally the answer to iMessage almost a decade later, poorly implemented and abysmal execution.

    • @Wreenz

      @@BullyCanadian The implementation is dependable on carriers but never the less possible. Android phones do all support it, so hardware is ready. But the lack of encryption is bad, and it is also why I'm not tempted to use it.

    • @BullyCanadian
      @BullyCanadian 4 роки тому +1

      Thomas Nielsen therein lies the problem. Google has to rely on the carriers to support it. It won’t just be a “flip a switch and it’s on” type of situation. It’ll fail. This is why iMessage and WhatsApp are so successful - it was literally “flip the switch and it’s on”.

      That is why I use SMS if my message is important. Data coverage is not perfect where I live and SMS doesn't require data just the normal carrier signal. I have seen many instances of messages via apps that use data being delayed but SMS is mostly instantaneous. People also tend to ignore their messaging apps sometimes but they almost always read their SMS. For example delivery details are always sent via SMS when I order something online and that is definitely something I want to be aware of.
      Where I live we have both unlimited data and unlimited SMS on monthly plans, so it's nice to have the choice and not worry about costs in either case. Many people though still have prepaid plans which can run out of data after a week of binge watching youtube videos in HD and SMS suddenly doesn't seem so bad.

As you see, you could desire to always send the Message, but if you have friends/family in other countries and either you or them at that moment doesn't have data connection, the message could go (depending on settings) via SMS/MMS and someone could get charged for a message that wasn't expecting to get charge with. wasn't until we had truly unlimited text messaging that rcs really took off.. also, the carriers weren't so generous about MMS at first as it was a premium feature to send pictures/audio over chat/text message for quite a while (remember when it had to be sent over DATA connection so that it could be counted as part of your data plan?!). the carriers wanted to keep "data" plans monetized at a high ratio. Now there is aggregate data available to send multi media messages/chat so long as it is just those formats and not full video-- carriers still want to monetize rich web & video as killer apps.

    By enabling RCS, which is now a "Google" rich operating service, you have allowed a "listening" permission. Remember a few years ago when people 'could've sworn' their phone can now "hear" what they're saying vs having to type it in? This is when Google adopted 'Chat' ergo the RCS feature

    What carriers in the US are currently not allowing it, and when you mention Samsung cant you just download the Google messages app in lieu of Samsung's messaging app rather than wait for integration?

      You could do that but I found I couldn't get chat features to work. It says it's not compatible with my device. I'm in the UK btw, one of the first counties Google rolled RCS in. I tried months ago to get it to work on my Samsung Galaxy S8 but it never even let me finish the registration process. Guess I'll just stick to Signal or Samsung Messages! (which are both superior IMHO)

      Well, my RCS Chat features have been working on the T-Mobile network for my Essential Phone since October of 2019. Since Google has been rolling it out to everyone without it having to be carrier dependant means more people can use it and that carriers have been sitting on this feature for their own selfish reasons.

    Nothing but one more way for one company to get more user information to better target and market the same users.

    People still use texting?

    Wait, you still use sms in USA? 8 years ago you only had to message to your mum and dad by SMS and everyone else was on WhatsApp. Now, everyone on the campus is on Telegram and I only use WhatsApp to message my parents.

    How about a video about 5G? The more I read about it, the more I am convinced that mm wavelength is going to be limited to small areas (e. g. Stadiums, business complexes, etc) because of the limited range and ease of interference from tree, buildings, etc. This makes 600 MHz (and lower) the spectrum that will provide the widest coverage, but at speeds well below mm service. I'd like to see if that is true and you are a source I trust.
