Most adults don't care, but the teens and young adults which is a huge market share for Apple absolutely do care. Social peer pressure at school where kids are being excluded from groups because they don't have an iPhone to be part of those iMessage groups. This even extends into work forces and even in the NBA where they forced players to get an iPhone just to be included in the group chats. Also, a lot of people (typically women) just don't like seeing the green bubble. Apple deliberate choose an unappealing colour so iPhone users are in disgust when seeing it and some say it ruins the "aesthetics". So yeah, there's a lot of people who care and I do find their reasoning behind it quite foolish. They refuse to install WhatsApp or telegram but have 50 photo editing apps, 30 games and their storage is always full. Let's hope RCS breaks that brainwashing but I doubt it as long as the green bubbles are there in that colour, people will still be convinced it's SMS no matter how hard you try to convince them it's RCS. I wish they made RCS a different colour like purple or allow users to customize the colours of their bubble like in Android.
I've been an iPhone user since I first started using smartphones, and I'm glad to see that Apple finally got in line with RCS. I hate getting low-quality photos from my Android-suing brothers. I used to think it was a problem with Android before I realized that it was really due to Apple being resistant to adopting a common standard.
Any instant messenger application will address it but we shouldn't have to have that attitude, we all deserve to be able to use instant messaging together . 😊

As a lifelong Android user thats far from the peer pressure and cover of intense Apple marketing. Its incredible to me how the green bubble debacle has made Apple users think Android devices are stuck in the past. When in fact, Apple are the ones creating that impression. Finally, you didn't mention the DOJ anti trust lawsuit as a possible reason for adopting some form of RCS
As someone that uses an iPhone as his primary driver, I’m stoked about this. Even tho, 90%+ of my friends and family are on iPhones, it will def make things way easier for talking to the few that are on android.
There blue and green on iMessage indicates whether it's sms or internet messages. This can occur between iPhones as well when you are not using the internet to send messages.
RCS messages are sent over WiFi or mobile data connectivity, so that doesn't apply here. Regardless if you're sending an iMessage or RCS message, you'll require internet connectivity.

An actual standard for E2EE would be nice. It'd be nice if Apple could make that happen. Also would be nice to use RCS completely de-googled on Android, but I don't know how likely that is any time soon…

Only Samsung has access to Google's standard if you use Galaxy messages on Galaxy devices, but it lacks some of the Google features. It only has encryption, but not reaction support or effects.
Thank you for this video! I work for one of the main carriers in the US and with the iPhone 16 launch this month, this is a big deal. As an employee of one of the main carriers, I required to use an iPhone for work, but I am a Samsung user for my personal choice. As you can imagine this is a topic of conversation, especially with every team I work with.
although i'm not a fan of how apple uses Imessage, I do like how apple is pushing the universal RCS profile, as a counter balance to google pushing there own version
So. Oddly enough the friends I text the most have Samsung phones so RCS is something I'm already used to. But my dad texted me about RCS on Apple phones because he saw it in the keynote. Him and like maybe 3 other people if they update their phones will get RCS and I just hope I can start getting videos I can actually see once that happens. iPhones and their pixelated videos...

@@ayushprasad8207 Overwhelmingly no. iPhone's have the huge majority of marketshare here, and iMessage is end to end encrypted (amongst other WhatsApp/Telegram features). Therefore, most people don't have a need for them day to day. I can count on 1 hand the amount of people I regularly text that don't have an iPhone. I also work at a retail store for one of our big 3 carriers, and I'd estimate 90-95% of people coming in to purchase a phone are getting some variant of an iPhone.

The only texts in my phone are from network promotions, OTP, bank & e-wallets confirmations. All communication with friends and relatives is mainly through 3rd party apps. The last time texting was a thing was around 2011

If they keep the green colour coding, how will an iOS user know it is instant messenger and not SMS? Not everyone has RCS active. I love RCS, it's great. Prefer it over any other applications, though I do use Signal App as my main other instant messenger application.
I'm currently bothered by the colored backgrounds in the RCS chats in Google Messages. In the video, the RCS chat has a neutral background. Can you set this somewhere? I haven't found anything about it 😔
My understanding is that apple sends to android MMS rather than SMS. The MMS envelope has limited size by design. Send images from apple to android one at time rather than grouped together. There will be less detail loss. RCS won't be here for awhile.
I'm more for the encryption part of it. SMS is so unprotected that it's not even worth using without know that message can be seen by anyone on the carrier side. My wife and I use Google Photos to send videos and pictures so that's not a big deal and I also like the fact that we can see if a message was read.
I'm glad the bare bone features are being supported but it's a shame about (probably) no editing and unsending messages, direct replying to threads, and E2EE especially since like Apple says "Privacy that's iPhone" except when it comes to messaging Android users...
As a long time (couple decades) Apple user, the messenger app is something I don’t think about. That is, until there is a non-Apple user in a group chat. Non-Apple users in a group chat causes several features to break ( naming or renaming the chat, adding new people to the chat, removing people from the chat). I do not feel “locked-in” because of the messaging app. I have no intention of moving out of Apple’s walled garden for a variety of reasons. Primary among them is Apple’s stance on security of my devices and my data.
I’m probably going back to Android after iOS 18 goes live. Currently using an iPhone 13. Now that RCS support is coming, I don’t have a major reason to stay on iPhone.
I’m convinced that apple intentionally used the most obnoxious type of green to hurt the users eyes to make them dislike it. I’m afraid even with RCS, until Apple allows people to change the iMessage interface, there will still be that dumb stigma. (Should’ve been able to change colors 10 firmwares ago for Pete sake)
I have the latest beta of IOS 18 and RCS only shows reactions to messages on the iPhone and android. No read receipts, no typing indicator… I hope this is still going to be added
It'll say "chatting with (number) RCS" on top of the thread and the chat bubble will be a little darker. For some people with older phones RCS will disconnect sometimes so it'll switch between RCS and SMS but I haven't seen that happen to anyone with an android newer than 2020
Hopefully sms won’t be shut down because of this. There are plenty of times when it becomes the only way to send a message and I can’t see that changing.
I love that in the presentation, Apple barely said anything about RCS, because they know that some of their users, will switch to Android in the blink of an eye, if they know that they can get most features from iMessage with RCS.
I would think the opposite would happen. Why would they switch knowing that they can communicate with Android users better and they have all the benefits of iMessage with other iPhone users?
Can't believe apple has such a following and yet does this to their customers. This has been an update out for YEARS and Apple had to be forced to implement it. Their answer for years was "well, I guess you have to buy an iPhone". And yet, I guess I'm not surprised. Want your iPhone to work with your computer "just buy a MacBook". Want a smart watch? "Buy an apple watch"cus nothing else works. It's ridiculous.
Then don't buy Apple. Both Apple and Microsoft build their systems with unity in mind. It's not ridiculous. Its not hard to not buy from these companies if you don't like their unity approach. And not liking it is absolutely fair. I recommend Google Pixel devices.

Android users will say this benefits everybody… but it technically only benefits Android users. Apple doesn’t need to add RCS messaging, their blue bubble iMessage has taken over and they’ll still be able to receive green bubble texts… it’s more of a win for Android. Cause not even I can finally get an Android and allow my friends to see when I’ve received and read their messages.
Android users will be able to send full resolution photos, high quality videos, documents, and other files to you through iMessage and vice versa. How is that not a win for you?
This issue is exactly why apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram do exist. Outside the US of A, the rest of world could careless about the green and blue bubble fight. A step in the right direction nonetheless.
I think Apple needs to make a iMessage for Android App for $9.99 and $4.99 a month. Just to shut everyone up. I doubt many would buy it, but then no one can say they don’t offer it…

Lmao Androids still don't have e2e encrypted texting? iPhones have had e2e encrypted cloud messaging with locally stored encryption keys for a while now. No wonder Apple didn't want to adopt RCS, it's still lagging way behind.
@@lilin1242 I know, but who holds the keys? If Google holds them, then it’s not really secure, and they’re only encrypted to prevent interception. With iMessage and ADP, our encryption keys are stored locally, so they can’t be used by Apple to decrypt our texts.
I have tried iPhones in the past and I was never a big fan. I'm a die hard android fan and I think that apple adopting rcs is a big step forward in breaking ever so slightly out of their proprietary standards.

@miisty6438 Any Android phone can use Google's messages app without any limits, but the person above was asking why can't any app have RCS and it can, but Google's version has proprietary features that other apps would have to build out on their own if they added RCS. Like Samsung's messaging app supports Google's end-to-end encryption but nothing else.
they usually bundle new features in all their apps at the same time. sometimes a feature is not ready at the x.0 launch and its reserved for the x.1 update. also apple built in apps are often not available to update outside of software update.
THIS. I'm on the iPhone currently but it boggles my mind why updates to Apple's Own Apps can NOT be updated SEPARATE from the OS. It's not like how they're doing by bumping VisionOS to 2.0 for very minimal features. It's an App; shouldn't need to adhere to being locked behind the OS just to say "BRAND NEW FEATURE" that Androids had for years!

It’s not apple’s fault that google in all these could not come up with a clean and user friendly messaging that people would want to use. And why would apple want to share their proprietary technology that they built from ground up and succeeded in getting people to use it as main communication tool which no other company in all these years did not even bother about. Do you really think these other companies actually cared. Also we cannot say apple cares about users and so they came up with imessage. It’s part of their business to hook as many people with their services and do people really care about the actual business intention… NO!. All that matters is at the end of the day they have an app that they can use to communicate in a hassle free way. Lets say come tomorrow whatsapp and telegram and signal introduces ads in their apps, most of the people would be sad about it whereas people with imessage never have to worry about it. Because since the beginning imessage was made just for iphones for people to communicate without interruptions or distractions and it will continue to stay the same. So i think people should give respect to apple for creating such platform rather than blaming them for creating a decent messaging app that is easily differentiating from other apps.

Agree but as sad as it is, kids get bullied in school these days if they show up as a green bubble in a text message thread. Crazy, right?

I have the latest beta of IOS 18 and RCS only shows reactions to messages on the iPhone and android. No read receipts, no typing indicator… I hope this is still going to be added

Yeah that's not RCS. iPhone and Android users have been and to emoji react to each other's messages for awhile now. At least on Samsung phones

how to know which users have rcs enabled in google messages?
I'm assuming it will have the "RCS message" on the message line when sending a text.
It'll say "chatting with (number) RCS" on top of the thread and the chat bubble will be a little darker.
For some people with older phones RCS will disconnect sometimes so it'll switch between RCS and SMS but I haven't seen that happen to anyone with an android newer than 2020
Different color and there is a little blue icon in the profile image in the conversation list, also it says RCS it the text box
Hopefully sms won’t be shut down because of this. There are plenty of times when it becomes the only way to send a message and I can’t see that changing.

I love that in the presentation, Apple barely said anything about RCS, because they know that some of their users, will switch to Android in the blink of an eye, if they know that they can get most features from iMessage with RCS.
I would think the opposite would happen. Why would they switch knowing that they can communicate with Android users better and they have all the benefits of iMessage with other iPhone users?
I never turned on Read setting. I see no point.
Can't believe apple has such a following and yet does this to their customers. This has been an update out for YEARS and Apple had to be forced to implement it. Their answer for years was "well, I guess you have to buy an iPhone". And yet, I guess I'm not surprised. Want your iPhone to work with your computer "just buy a MacBook". Want a smart watch? "Buy an apple watch"cus nothing else works. It's ridiculous.

Then don't buy Apple. Both Apple and Microsoft build their systems with unity in mind. It's not ridiculous. Its not hard to not buy from these companies if you don't like their unity approach. And not liking it is absolutely fair.

@@SnowyRVulpix my family has apple devices. I don't "hate" them, just looking at the landscape, I think it is pretty ridiculous. Additionally, to your point, Microsoft allows operation with all types of mobile operating systems.
Android users will say this benefits everybody… but it technically only benefits Android users. Apple doesn’t need to add RCS messaging, their blue bubble iMessage has taken over and they’ll still be able to receive green bubble texts… it’s more of a win for Android. Cause not even I can finally get an Android and allow my friends to see when I’ve received and read their messages.
Android users will be able to send full resolution photos, high quality videos, documents, and other files to you through iMessage and vice versa. How is that not a win for you?
Whether RCS or iMessage. For me WhatsApp does it for me. I use 3 WhatsApp numbers on one device. The RCS thing only allows on phone number.

This issue is exactly why apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram do exist. Outside the US of A, the rest of world could careless about the green and blue bubble fight. A step in the right direction nonetheless.

@Oldasianguy I have been using an android since the galaxy note 2 days. my last phone was a pixel 7 pro. My current phone is the iphone 15 pro. I still prefer the pixel 7 pro but the iphone 15 pro is still a very very good phone.

Lmao Androids still don't have e2e encrypted texting? iPhones have had e2e encrypted cloud messaging with locally stored encryption keys for a while now. No wonder Apple didn't want to adopt RCS, it's still lagging way behind.
Android has end-to-end encryption. Apple just doesn't want to support it for RCS.
@@lilin1242 I know, but who holds the keys? If Google holds them, then it’s not really secure, and they’re only encrypted to prevent interception.
With iMessage and ADP, our encryption keys are stored locally, so they can’t be used by Apple to decrypt our texts.

I have tried iPhones in the past and I was never a big fan. I'm a die hard android fan and I think that apple adopting rcs is a big step forward in breaking ever so slightly out of their proprietary standards.

It's unfortunate that Google Messenger is the only real RCS app option for Android. I would love to see an open source alternative as soon as that's tenable.
Other apps can support RCS it's a common standard, but Google's protocol is proprietary. That's how it supports certain features and encryption. Only Samsung has access to Google's standard if you use Galaxy messages on Galaxy devices, but it lacks some of the Google features. It only has encryption, but not reaction support or effects.

@miisty6438 Any Android phone can use Google's messages app without any limits, but the person above was asking why can't any app have RCS and it can, but Google's version has proprietary features that other apps would have to build out on their own if they added RCS. Like Samsung's messaging app supports Google's end-to-end encryption but nothing else.

I just want one of these larger channels to point out the fact that an entire OS update isn't required in order to update a messaging app.
They probably want you to by the newest iPhone that support AI( buzzword) to get RCS lol.
they usually bundle new features in all their apps at the same time. sometimes a feature is not ready at the x.0 launch and its reserved for the x.1 update. also apple built in apps are often not available to update outside of software update.
Well for iOS it is required. Apple can't update a System app alone. iOS is built that way that system apps can only be updated through iOS updates.
THIS. I'm on the iPhone currently but it boggles my mind why updates to Apple's Own Apps can NOT be updated SEPARATE from the OS. It's not like how they're doing by bumping VisionOS to 2.0 for very minimal features. It's an App; shouldn't need to adhere to being locked behind the OS just to say "BRAND NEW FEATURE" that Androids had for years!

Lol they “created a problem” by greatly improving messaging and adding features that SMS could never support (hi-res images/video, editing, inline replies, tapbacks, audio messages, read receipts, typing indicators, encryption, etc)
It’s not apple’s fault that google in all these could not come up with a clean and user friendly messaging that people would want to use. And why would apple want to share their proprietary technology that they built from ground up and succeeded in getting people to use it as main communication tool which no other company in all these years did not even bother about. Do you really think these other companies actually cared. Also we cannot say apple cares about users and so they came up with imessage. It’s part of their business to hook as many people with their services and do people really care about the actual business intention… NO!. All that matters is at the end of the day they have an app that they can use to communicate in a hassle free way. Lets say come tomorrow whatsapp and telegram and signal introduces ads in their apps, most of the people would be sad about it whereas people with imessage never have to worry about it. Because since the beginning imessage was made just for iphones for people to communicate without interruptions or distractions and it will continue to stay the same. So i think people should give respect to apple for creating such platform rather than blaming them for creating a decent messaging app that is easily differentiating from other apps.
@@Travishargermy point is apple could've supported rcs years ago instead of being so stubborn and encouraging the shaming of android users for "ruining" the texting experience when it's not their fault. Hell if the EU didn't step in and pressure them I don't think iPhones would've ever gotten rcs
