  • It’s here, my Derwent Coloursoft Review. This is the full length review of the Derwent Coloursoft colored pencils. First is a summary of my exprience with the Derwent Colorsoft pencils, followed by completed artwork, swatching, comparison to over ten other brands of pencils including but not limited to Prismacolor, Derwent ProColour, Faber Castell Polychromos and many more. Finally I end with some conclusions on these pencils and why I think these are some of most underrated pencils for adult coloring.

    I'm loving your videos, even if you can't reply to everyone right away. They are really informative and well worth the watch. I'm super excited... Last year I got the Polychromos pencils, and this year your videos are helping me figure out which Derwent pencils I want to get. I'm getting open stock so I can just augment what I already have. I'm really glad that the Derwent pencils are more readily available now than they used to be. I'm getting a combination of Coloursoft and Procolour in open stock.
    Keep up the good work with these videos :)

    I found the colors in Derwent coloursoft complement the subtle colors in Derwent Artists/Studio. The Reds, Oranges, and purples and pinks are more vivid in Derwent Coloursoft but most Greens are too vivid to draw a natural landscape and the Browns not as great as that in Derwent Artists. Maybe Derwent does it on purpose.
    Derwent is my main practice colorpencil brand because the local artshops here sell them much cheaper than Faber Castell, Caran D'ache and Prismacolor, from $69USD to $77USDfor 72colors set of Coloursoft, Artists and Studio and around $90usd for procolour When the 60color FaberCastell Polychromo could be $138 USD

    I LOVE that colored pencil look too! Though I have to admit, when I watch too much of other artists who work with blender, they do affect how I do my art. The other part happened back in college when art teacher wants a certain look, and hates the colored pencil look actually. I always thought I was just weird.

    • @ColoringKaria
      @ColoringKaria  6 років тому +5

      It’s really weird to me. So like no one minds markers, acrylic, graphite, watercolor, Gouache, even sand art works looking like they were made with what they were but colored pencil artists have decided that the only way for “real” colored pencil art to be anything is to not look like colored pencils. It’s really weird.
      I don’t know why that is but it’s not my style. I like the colored pencil look and I wish more artists would take it seriously and to its fullest potential.

      Hi! Yes, it happens to me too. Most artists use solvents. I don't and I like the colored-pencil look of my drawings. I love derwent pencils!!

    • @raquelsanchez9668

      Those who use blender very often do not know how to use the pencil. The drawings are very beautiful and much more professional but the continued use of blender tells me that they don't know how to draw.

    I find the Colorsoft pencils are wonderful for backgrounds. They lay down evenly, and because they are poor in layering, if they go over a color, the color won't show. I do like this set and keep it handy..

    Hi Karia...I got the 36 ct set at Christmas time when they were less than $30. Woo hoo. I really enjoy them because they're soft and the colors are clear and bright. I have very bad arthritis in my hands and don't like pencils that are hard requiring a lot of pressure . The one thing I do not care for is that it is easy to get too much wax on the paper resulting in thick deposits that are difficult to blend. You must use a light touch to get the best result and prevent tip breakage. If the larger set were to go on sale I would probably get it. Thanks for the review.

    • @ColoringKaria
      @ColoringKaria  6 років тому +1

      as you can seen in the video i did so some light layering. however i was not able to get as many layers as some other brands such as the luminance and so on. these would be ideal for people who do light layering, but my typical 10+ layers wont work with these :) I hope that helps.

    Yes, I do love these Derwent Coloursoft. I bought a few before and yes you cam use them in realism. its just a matter of getting used to them. If one can use Pastels realistically or even pastel pencils which are much softer than these, you can use these pencils realistically. But there are other brands for the money spent for them that will do a better job. I have the Lyra pencils and I love them. But I'm a watercolor artist and don't use them much. God bless and thanks for sharing!

    I have some samples of colorsolft and also derwent lightfast and to tell you the truth I cant tell the difference when Im using them they both feel the same to use. Shut your eyes and try it, they even layer the same. Lightfastness ratings and color seem to be the only differences as far as I can tell. Im going to get a mix of both.

    • @ColoringKaria
      @ColoringKaria  2 роки тому

      yes lightfastness would be the biggest difference. I mainly use polychromos and havent used either in some time but differences in lightfast ratings alone would account for the price difference as more lightfast pigments tend to be much more expensive.

    • @pennypop408
      @pennypop408 2 роки тому

      @@ColoringKaria Yes so true. Its a good thing that most of the colorsoft have a rating of 8. Sixteen of them are below what I would use in m work but it still leaves a swag of pencils you can use and they are a lot cheaper than the other Lightfast Derwents so for me a mix will work. Love your channel btw You are on my watch list.

    • @ColoringKaria

      That’s definitely a matter of opinion. To me I would not use any of their lines for professional work because of the light fast ratings and the poor selection of colors for African American skin tones. I prefer the Luminance and polychromos.

I've always used Derwent pencils (I've used all their ranges over the years) and have never had a problem in achieving a variety of different skin tones. I have a 72 prismacolor premier box, and this 24 derwent colorsoft, and they are the same to me. There are some colors that are similar, other that are different. But they work well together if that's what you are asking.

    • @MeganMcCar
      @MeganMcCar 6 років тому

      Yes, Derwent colours are just gorgeous and are well made and sturdy (when I first saw prismas I thought they were 'twigs' compared to the Derwents!). They are soft but to be honest, if comparing them directly next to to the prismacolor premiers, they feel a bit 'chalky'. Not as 'buttery'. But it's relative and if one didn't know about prismas - yes, definitely soft - the older sets of the Derwent's 'Artists' series are also surprisingly soft but are better for more detailed work (though they may have changed the formula because newer Artists series dofeel a bit harder. ... I've also tried getting rid of that supposed 'no no' colour pencil look with colourless blender markers), often a technique promoted or used by more 'realistic' or photo realism art, but I did ask myself, what is the point? Ok, it may look great but ummm, why not just use a marker or something instead?! Colour pencils are what they are, varying in the way they lay down but why transform them into something else? It's not a 'black and white' topic of course and everyone has their own techniques and preferences but really, while I do love blending colour pencils, to change them with markers? Looked good but ...? 🤔I'm a relative beginner though with lots to learn!!

    • @MeganMcCar
      @MeganMcCar 6 років тому +1

      I think I went off topic! Yes Coloursoft and Prismacolor Premier do work well together, though if you want finer detail, you may also need to complement the softer pencils with a harder style such as the polychromos or Derwent Artists and and (so many out there; all personal preference)! :)
