Tie rods just go bad, it’s normal, especially if your rough with your vehicle.
@@interstate80.that point where the tie rod connects to the steering arm is practically a bearing, they don’t normally get greased once installed.

Where can I find QUALITY parts? My wife's 2011 Jeep Patriot (2.0L Front wheel drive) went from 2010 to 2019 with the original parts.
I noticed it started driving sloppy.
Jeep replaced the front and rear subframe parts, for free by a hidden extended warranty because they know they used bad metal, and since 2019, we've changed ball joints 4 times and tie rods twice.
We've gone with ACDelco, Moog, and I forget the other brand but it was listed at the parts store as OEM.
They've failed again I just saw this weekend!
Where can I source beefier ball joints and tie rods?
I would source OEM parts and if you are still having issues then go with a well known aftermarket suspension company like Kryptonite or Synergy, Carli, etc. if they make any for your vehicle. I’ve found over the past decade or so that even higher regarded aftermarket brands like Moog have been using plastic inserts in their ball joints instead of metal which of course wears out sooner. Even the parts listed as “OEM quality or higher” at the parts stores I don’t trust.
Can be easily replaced, using basic tools, on driveway. Don't let them tell you otherwise.
We got lucky with this one and they covered both lower ball joints plus alignment under warranty

I'm not sure if a bad tie rod is all that dangerous. Your tire will wear badly. I could be wrong.

@TonyTheTruckGuy got my tundra fixed from a collision. They put in non greasable ball joints and I believe that's what's squeeking everytime I hit a bump. Drives me nuts
Because there's no grease fitting to put grease in there. You can replace it with a brand that does have a grease fitting (Moog) is one that usally does. But it doesn't mean the lifespan will be any longer.
Am assuming you check them with the front end lifted?
Yes and no! The front end does need to be off the ground so there no weight on the tire itself, but you must place the jack as close to the tire as possible under the lower control arm. You want the suspension to be at the closest angle as possible to how it is going down the road when you check the hall joints. I’ve seen people just jack up the vehicle in the middle which causes the control arms to drop much more and the joints will feel fine when checked by hand but then clunk when on the ground.

The place I went to left the nut loose after I had the tie rod replaced let's just say they would not own up to it after my steering wheel broke free from the knuckle... They are lucky I made it back there in one peice otherwise I would have sued.
I still would have if they aren’t even willing to fix what they messed up. So long as the part THEY installed is the part that failed. Too many rookies doing mechanic work now days

@TonyTheTruckGuy I have thar same exact clunk when turning over small bumps.. my control arms are SPC I can't belive the balljoints are failing after only 10k miles
@@yezkaholic Could be sway bar end links also. Those are notorious for clunking when going over bumps. The end links on this Jeep are shot now I noticed when I drove it a few weeks ago and it's around 55k miles. 10k though is wild.

Does it create a slight bounce when going fast
Could cause many things. This one made clunking noises when hitting bumps and pulled to the right, so I knew something was messed up and this is what I found when inspecting the front end.
@@TonyTheTruckGuy I changed my inner tie rod days after installing a outer. The outer was just 3 weeks old but had some free play. I did alignment after putting all back. But now if I'm going 70mph it slightly vibrates like every 2 seconds of speed, I suspect the outer one (even tho not more than a month old) is encountered bad bumps idk

@@CharlesWilson-oz8ys Definitely possible but that's something you'd have to put hands and eyes on to check for sure. Quality of parts also matters. I did the same ball joints 3 times in my old Dodge Dakota in only like 60k miles because they were cheapos.

Both! The tie rod is a "ball style joint". You are seeing the outer tie rod end here.

Is that left to right or up to down on the wheel?
Had it jacked up under the lower control arm and had my hands at 9 and 3 shaking it side to side or left to right. I would do the same thing but up and down instead if I were checking upper/lower ball joints.

GF's Jeep. Luckily she had extended warranty so only paid the $100 deductible and they covered both tie rod ends plus alignment lol.

I have that same problem how does that screw come out hammer it or use a socket wrench to unscrew it
Remove the nut then strike the knuckled from the side where the "2" is on this one using a hammer and should pot the joint out.
