- Our visit to Sal Island in Cape Verde over Christmas/New Year 2021/2, at the Riu Cabo Verde Hotel.
We'd been run ragged and then knocked back by COVID in the weeks before going, so we ended up just lounging about, eating and drinking. An explorer's trip it was not, but it was just what we needed.
This video made be book a holiday to Sal, Cape Verde. Thanks so much for this amazingly detailed vlog of your trip. Just what I needed!

was there in 2016 heard it had a big refurb just after we left .and the palm trees on the beach were only about 2feet tall ..great video makes me wanna go back now ..

Great video I think I have now made my mind up to opt for this hotel over melia llana which is adult only as well.
Was there a beach bar because it looks a big resort and I do like to spend more time at the beach..I'm going to book for late Feb 2023..
Hi Colin, glad the video was of use. There was a beach bar, but it was quite limited in choice compared to the other bars. We spent most of our time down at the beach, it was lovely. Hope you have a great time!
Big mistake. Definitely go to Melia Llana over this. Here now and can't wait to go home. It's awful. Seems to have gone way downhill since the new year.

Great video thank you Andrew. Can I ask a few Qs please as we're booked up for May
1) Is there a poolside/bar/beach table service for drinks as in most 5* hotels?
2)Which block would you say is the best/ closest to beach etc.
3) Are there any umbrellas on the beach as I couldn't see anywhere for shade?
4) How much deposit does the hotel have off you when you arrive.
Any other tips?

Hi Dave, glad you liked the video, we had a great time there and I really enjoy editing these things! To answer your questions as best I can:
1 - There wasn't any table service when we were there - the staff serve pretty quickly though and there's plenty bars dotted around the place.
2 - We were in block 4 out of 5, which was pretty close to the pool access. As I remember, the closest block to the beach was block 5, but that's also furthest away from the reception area where most of the catering is. I'm not sure if there are any rooms with sea views so can't really say whether 5 would be any better...
3 - When we were there most of the umbrellas on the beach were set back a bit (dotted in amounts the palms). Not sure if they move them closer to the shore as the weather heats up, but shad is available if you want it.
4 - The only money we had to pay when we arrived was the tourist tax, they didn't need any other monies from us. There's a cashpoint in reception if you need it.
I'd definitely recommend booking early for the Krystal restaurant - it's the best one. Also, worth noting that the drinks are a bit hit & miss, but there are a few spirits that are branded (eg, if you ask for whisky, you'll get the local hooch, but they will give you Jim Beam if you're specific). Worth paying attention to the back bar!
The people there are great and you'll have a good time I'm sure. Enjoy!

Is there a atm at the hotel and what's the best way to get currency? Enjoyed your vlog by the way, I am interested in staying for a 2 week break just to chill and do nothing.
Hi Nick, thanks for your comment! There is a cashpoint in the hotel just by the reception desks, but to be honest we didn't really use any cash as we were just there for a week to recharge our batteries. The hotel is great for that, and I can recommend the yoga teacher if you're into that kind of thing. Hope you have a good break.
I found this video so helpful, thank you. We’ve been looking at this hotel for our honeymoon end of March/start of April and I find vlogs a lot more reassuring than general photos etc. Definitely confirmed our decision to go here, thanks!

Great video!! I am looking to visit Cape Verde in July but I am slightly worried about how windy it is supposed to be. Does it really impact things or is it not very noticeable?
Thanks Luke, I'm glad you like it! When we were there in December it was fairly windy, but the wind was quite warm so not an issue for us. Not sure how it is in July but I can only imagine it will be warmer still! Hope you have a great trip.

Looks amazing! How long is the flight from the uk? Would you recommend Cape V for two weeks in Aug? Was the hotel really good?
Hi Bibian, thanks for watching, we really liked it there, so would definitely recommend Cape Verde! The flight time from the UK is around 5 hours. We were there in December but I think it gets a bit warmer in August so worth checking that (it was around 27 and sunny every day for our stay). The hotel was listed as a 5 star but was more like 3-4 at best. All staff were friendly and it was very clean, food was just ok, apart from the Krystal restaurant which was lovely (unless you're vegetarian 😁). Drinks were very hit and miss. Really close to the beach too! We really enjoyed it there for what it was.
No umbrellas on the beach 🏖️ 😢
There were some further back amongst the trees as I recall.

Hi Nick, the only additional cost we had when we went was the tourist tax (only a few Euro) that we paid at reception when we arrived. Hope this helps, have a great holiday!
Helpful video, noticed that there doesnt seem to be any parasols on the beach? Are they available anywhere?
Hi, glad you liked the video! There are shady area in the beach with Palm trees and parasols a little bit further back from the sea so you should be fine.
Just a quick question what covid tests are required to travel to Cape Verde? And any covid restrictions in place, hope they still do the chicken minestrone soup that's sold the hotel to us😁
Hi Nick, when we went (end December 2021) we had to do a PCR test and bring details of vaccinations. There was also a requirement to wear masks indoors unless eating or drinking. Outside was not necessary, but I'd definitely check current requirements as things change quickly these days. If you do go I'd recommend booking into the Krystal restaurant as soon and as often as possible (it's the best one by far). I'm not sure if the Chicken Minestrone soup is only available to vegetarians, but always worth asking :D Have a great trip!

Is there anything to do outside of the hotel ?
Hi , there’s a small village close by but not a huge amount

Hi Pavel, only a couple of times, and not for long each time. It was pretty big surf though, but the lifeguards were usually on the case
