He apparently had a fear of crows since his childhood because one of them pecked his missing eye out. The reason he keeps them around in the circus was his own way of controlling the source of his trauma. It's honestly kind of a shame it was removed since it makes his demise that much more effective.

I am salvadorean and not only do I remember that exact poster but the picture he showed in the video is in fact, the only big bowling alley we have in the capital (I would wager it’s the only one but idk if there is a small one somewhere). Taking into account how little most people know about El Salvador this seems like a very specific thing for a foreigner to know.

Professor Screweye's death is by far one of the most interesting deaths for me. You'd expect someone being eaten alive to go out screaming, or be shown snippets of brutality, but nope. One second he's fully covered with crows, the next he doesn't exist anymore.
I thought that shortly after being in fear of death he realized that this was his fate and then that’s when he accepted it and proceeded to…”disappear” after the crows swarmed him. It’s pretty damn disturbing
He's literally consumed by his own fear. A fitting and poetic end for a figre who dedicated his life in trying to control the fears of others. .... Also there are dancing dinos in this movie.
The two alien soldiers losing their brains in Planet 51 always scared me as a kid. Permanent damage to someone's psyche and body with them having to live with it and not knowing what they've lost is one of the most horrifying fates to me.
I feel like the Fallout New Vegas Team must've used that scene as their inspiration for when The Courier's Brain gets sucked out at The Big MT. Considering it too becomes more civilized once it's out of their body.

I also want to mention the deleted scene from We’re Back, which delved into Screw Eyes’ backstory. When he was a kid, he was napping under a berry bush and a berry rolled into his eye, and when a crow spotted it, it pecked at the berry while also pecking out his eye. From that one traumatic incident, Screw Eyes concluded that the world made no sense as he had done nothing to deserve such a barbaric fate. From that day, he developed a fear of crows, so in order to master his fear he kept them by him. It’s honestly pretty messed up, but would’ve added so much more to the movie if they kept it in.
The campfire scene in Shrek the Third where Shrek talks with Arthur is a genuinely good scene and concisely showcases his character development. It's a genuinely great scene in an otherwise lackluster film.
Honestly, for Sing 2, Jimmy Crystal is actually a somewhat decent villain. He's full of ego, overbearing, controlling his daughter, afraid to be ashamed, sick and twisted with power. The way Porscha in a sense flicks him off by doing her musical number is a nice "fuck you, Dad" moment.
Speaking of Porscha, I thought she was just gonna be a one note nepotism mean rich girl character, but then she displays crippling self esteem issues mostly from her father being emotionally abusive by saying her lack of acting talent is "embarrassing/ making him look bad" and neglectful because he literally gives her anything she wants just so he doesn't have to deal with her. One moment I liked was when she tried to wave goodbye to Jimmy but he doesn't even look back and she's visibly upset by it. Them later in the film, Miss Crawly makes her actually put in effort for the stageshow and she takes her job seriously, ACTUALLY APOLOGISES FOR BEING A BRAT (which I never expected!) and graciously accepts the offer to be recasted as a singer instead of an actor and gives Rosita back the lead role she stole from her. I was rooting for Porscha by the time her "Fuck you, Dad" moment happened. As for Jimmy, I thought he was a cliche critic character and his "If you make me look bad I'll throw you off the roof" was one of those exaggeration jokes. But nah, he damn near goes feral when he's angry by baring his teeth, using his claws, his fur bristling which legit was intimidating. And it turns out her actually DOES throw people off the roof! This man has actually killed people and presumably covered it up with his influence. And he sends actual hitmen after the main characters and even his own daughter admits their lives are in danger. Long story short, Sing 2, surprisingly good, one of my favourite Illumination movies, Jimmy Crystal was actually scary
People throw the Sing Movies _way_ too much shade i.m.o. ... Not only are they one of the best example of how to do a jukebox musical right (take notes Cinderella 2021) but they're really inspirational in terms of teaching children to persevere at reaching their dreams.
I think they did a good job portraying him as cold, dangerous, and egotistical, but still clearly able to put up a front for the crowd. He’s charismatic when he chooses to be. Reminds me of a psychopath or serial killer.

I did have some hope for the animated remake of The Grinch when I heard Benedict Cumberbatch had been hired to do the title character's voice, because heck, if any modern-day actor can come close to sounding like Boris Karloff, it's him. But then I heard the director had told him to lose his British accent and raise his voice from baritone to tenor. WHY? Why hire an actor with a specific sound and then tell him NOT to sound like that? "Illumination doesn't make films. They make products." Truer words were never spoken.
He just sounds weird without his accent, it took me half of _Doctor Strange_ before my brain stopped asking who this Benedict Cumberbatch-looking imposter was.
At least We’re Back has some more interesting qualities in spite of its nightmare of a production. BTW, there’s a video detailing it’s production troubles so check it out for yourself.
I would also like to add the scene in Valiant where the protagonist’s crush Victoria tells him that being a hero doesn’t matter, as long as he makes it back safely. Such a powerful line.
I'll always remember the opening scene of Valiant, where the messenger pigeons are picked off, one by one, by the falcons. It's such a dark scene, and it only gets more disturbing when you see that the General had their corpses stuffed.
This channel has charm and wit you dont often see from bigger channels, and has slowly grown on me through its catalogue, you guys are making a difference, dont let anyone tell you otherwise
I love that this is one of those channels with a sort of meta narrative, you know with a cast of animated characters and everything. Except they upload so rarely I dont really even know what the plot is. There's something weirdly charming about that imo, because im not following a story at this point, its just, there is a setting for a world and it just kind of exists as a backdrop to the commentary content.
I'd say for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, the villain Chester V is the best aspect about the film. He's one of the best twist villains of the past decade, as the movie wastes no time in showing the audience that he's a villain, it's just a twist for the main character. Also, his evil plan also has kind of a point, as he's been secretly planning of getting rid of food-animal mutants.

Illumination is an odd beast when it comes to film studios. You want to condemn them for being "The Minions People", making mediocre but otherwise harmless schlock; But you have to also commend them for being able to put out actually watchable animated children's films when The Mouse and his contemporaries have been fumbling the bag.

I think about this a lot with Madagascar 3 of all things. The "impossible ring" scene is something I feel that's genuinely poignant and thought provoking...and it comes from the "dada afro circus" movie. That one scene is keeping this movie alive in my memory banks and I don't know how to feel about that.
The scene where the animals are put back in the zoo, and they see it not as a paradise anymore but as a loud suffocating place, and then the lady about to shoot Alex with the intent of killing him, with Alex accepting it, that scene got me, and destroyed my spirit
I feel like ppl would understand Planet 51 better if they actually knew what the American 50s were like. I think it's greatest flaw is that it was TOO spot on to the American 50s to the point it was too "alien" to the younger audience the movie was intended for. It did a better adaptive job, and has an honest in-depth view into their lives and how they saw and thought than MOST period movies about that time today that it's a shame ppl aren't doing entire video essays about it because there is MUCH to say for Planet 51 that ppl are SLEEPING on. This is one of the most American movies I've seen, that doubles as a homage to a time period and culture. Which were also it's flaws bc this absolutely fell flat to foreigners, including recently immigrated. It ALSO has the pacing, thought process, and tone of an American 50s movie/media. Another point to it's downfall bc that translates to mediocre for today's standards. But if you grew up with American 50s media, that slower and simpler story/pace feels very familiar. Even the newer references like the Xenomorphs were often unfamiliar because those are from ADULT horror movies, and obviously not many kids have seen those if they are watching the safe Planet 51. It's so alien to the younger audience, that many couldn't even figure out which time period it was representing, thinking it was just the Aliens having a quirky alien aesthetic/lifestyle not based on a literal time period. They couldn't figure it out even after the Astronaut makes the "future" 60s reference. That movie relied almost entirely on already knowing, or already being familiar with, so much and if you didn't than I can imagine how out of touch it would be. I feel like the Director(s) made a movie from the heart, from something they knew so much about or experienced (a literal love letter to that time), but forgot that the 50s is largely forgotten by most of the populace, only being highly romanticized in very particular areas, and this movie specifically avoided many of those areas thus taking away what little familiarity it COULD have had.
As someone who had to do a report on McCarthyism and the era of the "red scare", Planet 51 did a really great job at making an alternate 50's America. Kinda of have to give props to the movie for managing all that and still managing to make it (semi) kid friendly.
I'll admit, as a massive Sherlock Holmes fan, Sherlock Gnomes is one of the only films I still hadn't seen - I just never thought there'd be anything interesting there. But your segment about it has convinced me to give it an honest chance and judge it for myself. ESPECIALLY the mind palace segments, I had no idea the movie included them, let alone put so much loving detail into them. I doubt it'll be anywhere near the Great Mouse Detective (still one of the best portrayals of Holmes and I will die on that hill) but I'm sure it'll be a fun time regardless!
I couldn't finish watching it 😭😭 the dynamic between Holmes and Watson was just too FREAKING ANNOYING for me. LIKE THE WHOLE IDEA IS THAT SHERLOCK *WANTS* WATSON BY HIS SIDE. GRAAAHHHHHHH. I might give it another shot after finding out about the thought process, though.
I just finished it and to be honest I had that EXACT same thought for most of the movie, so I FULLY empathize - it felt like the movie didn't understand Watson as a character at all or acknowledge their bond... But as I kept going with it, I realized that it was actually intentional, and instead of misunderstanding their dynamic it was actually using the change in it to *say something*. I won't spoil what it is, but honestly I found the idea genuinely compelling (even if the way it's handled isn't perfect) and bc of that the third act really saves the movie for me. I recommend sticking it out, it's still not the best Sherlock and Watson I've seen, but it does have heart if you're willing to give it another shot
5:30 I never noticed this in the movie. He recoils in fear at the crow, before quickly composing himself. I always thought he was just startled, but this was actually foreshadowing. Huh.

One of my teachers was actually a producer for area 51 and he told us the concept artist had a field day making every single visual element in the planet round, inspired by the fifties and those circles rhat appeared in fields.
I feel like Sherlock Gnomes is the epitome of "ads making a movie look bland" because wow, while I'm sure the end result is still mid, it at least LOOKS interesting, an opinion I never had from adverts. And man, how do I wish Eight Crazy Nights was another Uncut Gems moment for Sandler by being a more dramatic turn for the actor. The animation is so, so, so, so good for a movie littered with pissing and farting.
For the alien rock movie, I believe the scene with the commander getting electrocuted but refusing to fall down and pass out and actually succeeding was cool and funny as hell
I loved "We're Back" when I was a kid, as simple as the movie is, Little me adored the movie, and Big me adores the artstyle. And while the Circus of Fear and Professor Screweye's death didn't manage to make it into the small list of things that scared me as a child, the switch up in tone and colors and the way it was all presented did leave me breathless and amazed. Also, the child asking their parents to bring them to a Sherlock Holmes movie? That was me... I was that child. I've loved Sherlock ever since my mom brought home this DVD filled with old timey Christmas specials, and I watched him solve a crime about a prison escape and figgy pudding.
I am deeply ashamed that after all this time and appreciating such a wonderful piece of work, the only thing I can really say about it that nobody else seems to have done is; the stupid among us joke really got me good.

my biggest issue with the croods 2 was the fact that guy had to understand everything from Eep's perspective. While Eep had to learn that she still loved guy. Instead of realizing that maybe she had to see guy from a new light, guy wasn't a daring explorer/adventurer. He was just a survivor, everything he's done was to reduce risk to increase his chances of living for another day. Eep should've realized that guy wasn't the guy she made him out to be and the two at an equal level discuss their relationship. Where they would have to have to talk things out and have a level of compromise to make the relationship work.
Honestly, I feel the Grinch was okay, but what really shined was them just making Suessian gizmos. And I agree, that dinner scene was actually a really nice take on the conclusion of the story.
My personal one is Muru's Chant/Song from Balto 2! Mediocre as hell movie, forgot pretty much all of it once it was finished, but that song captured my attention immediately and I even downloaded it later because it was so soothing!
That movie is the ultimate gateway drug for cringe wolf kids, and I LOVE it. Balto's daughter is only a quarter wolf, but learns wolfish behavior naturally and is kept in the dark about it all her life, and Balto eventually telling her what she is prompts her to run away and follow some dream. Btw Balto has been having dreams of his own the entire movie, though moreso ugly cgi nightmares. There's a totem pole (ew) where each animal represents a point of character to acknowledge and overcome, and those animals manifest in the world to mess with Balto and Aloo. Also Balto's mother's ghost is the one orchestrating all those encounters. Then when Aloo makes it to the wolf pack there's a subplot about the pack going into a civil war, and the leader of the good guy side has magic for some reason. Then during the climax Aloo becomes the leader of what remains of the good guy side and gets literally separated from everything she knew before and we don't see what happens to her afterwards, only assured that her destiny was to be a leader and she's going to be great at it. You've probably already guessed it but Aloo is very much an everyman self-insert character. Though I think after the current boom of isekai anime having a nothing protagonist for us girls is much appreciated.

Only that I think it’s hilarious people to this day will gripe about Godzilla’98 being a ripoff when movies like illumination just bank on memeage and very quickly tired out references. Leave it to you to make me realize a thing, and it’s that 8CN was familiar for a reason. The Iron Giant crew huh??? No wonder I loved the animation in that movie. Granted I childishly loved this movie as a- well a child… it’s lost its luster as my amusement shifted considerably. But yeah. You’re right. That one song still occasionally lives rent free in my head. The Croods movie was a guilty liking tbh. But I only ever watched it once. It’s one of those movies that’s kinda fun to watch just for the hell of it- but yes it greatly pales in comparison to its much superior predecessor. Honestly I look at it the same way as the series (which I’ve not watched) an alt universe situation. Nothing more. To be enjoyed at one’s own discretion. Planet 51 is a guilty pleasure. Idk why but the simplicity of one twist for that film just worked for me. (AWSOME among us ref btw). It also taught me a distinctly important lesson: vaccinate your pets because space rabies is horrifying. And as for Sherlock Gnomes- yeah I haven’t see that movie, though I did see a clip of the villain which, somehow surprised me. Something about his let off at the end was interesting. Idk. Probably misremembering. But definitely will take a look at that sequence. Looks fun! Outside of this, thank you for sharing, BE. Oh man! I remembered seeing “We’re Back! A Dinosaur Story” I think on Cartoon Network around Thanksgiving one year, and it was such a bizarre experience for me. Not much else stuck with me outside of John Goodman as Rex, but Screw-Eyes death scene really had me stunned in more ways than I expected. And thought the most macabre thing I watched as a kid was Nightmare Before Christmas, but that scene definitely stuck with me beyond anything else in this film.
Dude it’s so cool to know there a salvadorean people making content in English!!! It always makes me so happy to see content from someone from my country. Also I relate so hard at only associating planet 51 to the galaxy bowling posters lol, I guess it’s kind off a good thing that they aren’t there anymore but dude, they stayed there all my childhood and even some years after I became an adult.
Recommendation if this becomes a series: Horton Hears A Who, theres a few good scenes but the emotional ones hit the best (mountain chase and the climax ending). Personally I don't think it's a mediocre film but I'm part of the 1%, I just want more attention on my favorite movie and got really excited when you mentioned it bc at least most agree that it's the best adaptation

The opening scene of the 1986 Transformers movie has always stuck with me due to the subtle existential horror. It introduces us to Lithone, a lively planet with a thriving civilization of people going about their daily lives… and then Unicron, the living metal planet, comes along and completely devours it before just moving on to find a new planet to consume. Like, imagine that happening to Earth; our billion year history and the countless beings living on it, wiped out in minutes for this thing’s Tuesday lunch. Combine that with glorious animation and an amazing score by Vince DiCola (the Rocky 4 composer) and you’ve got a super underrated scene from an honestly great movie.
As a small child Screweye's death made me terrified of crows for a long time. I see them as friends now but I remember crying at the sight of them, even after one literally pushed a keychain into my hand ;u;
Mario movie definitely wasn't pandered by critics. Critics and most of Hollywood seemed to hate that such a simple movie based on video game was making so much money. They were seething about it.
Say what you will about 8 crazy nights, the animation studio is insane for actually trying. Everything looks designed carefully, even the worse bits look like a art team really gave a damn. I was this old when I realized the team behind iron giant worked on it, but man it shows.

I actually enjoyed quite a few scenes from Monsters Vs Aliens. The monsters are decent references to the movies they came from. Susan suddenly being forced to adjust to her sudden transformation and her breakdown when she sees the cheesy "Hang in there" poster is pretty sad and appropriate. And if you live in California, the joke about her honeymoon being moved from Paris to Fresno is pretty funny.
"We're Back" holds a special, nostalgic place in my heart. The musical number is fun but the entire circus arc was everything my Halloween loving heart adored as a child ("let no bad things happen" excepted seriously who wrote that line).
it's a music number; in sing 2 the final act is a whole musical they put together and the plot is the main character of the performance is an astronaut going from planet to planet in search of a missing person (in the actual movie plot he's a famous singer that's been in retirement for like 15 something years who came back for the performance). don't ask why i remember this (i worked at a daycare around when this came out and i had to watch it like twice a week cos the kids were obsessed with it lmao. also the movie is pretty decent)
Afaik, "We're Back!" is so weird because it was basically an hour long self-promotion video for the studio. Don't look at the plot, look at how they portray things - they show comedy, they show drama, they show light-hearted and scary scenes, they show things small and ginormous, and they do it WELL. This movie looks way better than it has any right to. Because it's not a movie in a conventional sense of the word, It's a self-promo reel loosely tied together by the plot from a children's book to show that the studio was capable of portraying any script you throw their way.

I am salvadorean and not only do I remember that exact poster but the picture he showed in the video is in fact, the only big bowling alley we have in the capital (I would wager it’s the only one but idk if there is a small one somewhere). Taking into account how little most people know about El Salvador this seems like a very specific thing for a foreigner to know.

The version I heard is that they asked around to see which companies were willing to be included for free, and used them. Apparently it was supposed to highlight how the story took place in what was then the present day, by using brands that moviegoers would be familiar with.
Professor Screweye's death is by far one of the most interesting deaths for me. You'd expect someone being eaten alive to go out screaming, or be shown snippets of brutality, but nope. One second he's fully covered with crows, the next he doesn't exist anymore.
Wish its last longer, making the audience more unnerved. I find how fast tje bird goes from swarm to leave to be too abrupt for me

The two alien soldiers losing their brains in Planet 51 always scared me as a kid. Permanent damage to someone's psyche and body with them having to live with it and not knowing what they've lost is one of the most horrifying fates to me.
Oh yeah same here, that's some existential horror to me. Something lost and they don't even know it.
I feel like the Fallout New Vegas Team must've used that scene as their inspiration for when The Courier's Brain gets sucked out at The Big MT. Considering it too becomes more civilized once it's out of their body.

I also want to mention the deleted scene from We’re Back, which delved into Screw Eyes’ backstory. When he was a kid, he was napping under a berry bush and a berry rolled into his eye, and when a crow spotted it, it pecked at the berry while also pecking out his eye. From that one traumatic incident, Screw Eyes concluded that the world made no sense as he had done nothing to deserve such a barbaric fate. From that day, he developed a fear of crows, so in order to master his fear he kept them by him. It’s honestly pretty messed up, but would’ve added so much more to the movie if they kept it in.
A scene that always stuck with me from an otherwise forgettable film is from Barnyard where Ben fights the coyotes to the death

Honestly, for Sing 2, Jimmy Crystal is actually a somewhat decent villain. He's full of ego, overbearing, controlling his daughter, afraid to be ashamed, sick and twisted with power. The way Porscha in a sense flicks him off by doing her musical number is a nice "fuck you, Dad" moment.
Speaking of Porscha, I thought she was just gonna be a one note nepotism mean rich girl character, but then she displays crippling self esteem issues mostly from her father being emotionally abusive by saying her lack of acting talent is "embarrassing/ making him look bad" and neglectful because he literally gives her anything she wants just so he doesn't have to deal with her.
One moment I liked was when she tried to wave goodbye to Jimmy but he doesn't even look back and she's visibly upset by it. Them later in the film, Miss Crawly makes her actually put in effort for the stageshow and she takes her job seriously, ACTUALLY APOLOGISES FOR BEING A BRAT (which I never expected!) and graciously accepts the offer to be recasted as a singer instead of an actor and gives Rosita back the lead role she stole from her. I was rooting for Porscha by the time her "Fuck you, Dad" moment happened.
As for Jimmy, I thought he was a cliche critic character and his "If you make me look bad I'll throw you off the roof" was one of those exaggeration jokes. But nah, he damn near goes feral when he's angry by baring his teeth, using his claws, his fur bristling which legit was intimidating. And it turns out her actually DOES throw people off the roof! This man has actually killed people and presumably covered it up with his influence. And he sends actual hitmen after the main characters and even his own daughter admits their lives are in danger.
Long story short, Sing 2, surprisingly good, one of my favourite Illumination movies, Jimmy Crystal was actually scary

Not only are they one of the best example of how to do a jukebox musical right (take notes Cinderella 2021) but they're really inspirational in terms of teaching children to persevere at reaching their dreams.
I think they did a good job portraying him as cold, dangerous, and egotistical, but still clearly able to put up a front for the crowd. He’s charismatic when he chooses to be. Reminds me of a psychopath or serial killer.

They’re pretty good.
I also like a few other Illumination movies such as Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, Minions, and The Super Mario Bros Movie.
I respect them for remaining true to their formula and not bowing down to AI.
I did have some hope for the animated remake of The Grinch when I heard Benedict Cumberbatch had been hired to do the title character's voice, because heck, if any modern-day actor can come close to sounding like Boris Karloff, it's him. But then I heard the director had told him to lose his British accent and raise his voice from baritone to tenor. WHY? Why hire an actor with a specific sound and then tell him NOT to sound like that?

He just sounds weird without his accent, it took me half of _Doctor Strange_ before my brain stopped asking who this Benedict Cumberbatch-looking imposter was.

We're Back being on the same list as an Illumination movie and an Adam Sandler movie feels like a personal attack.
At least We’re Back has some more interesting qualities in spite of its nightmare of a production. BTW, there’s a video detailing it’s production troubles so check it out for yourself.
I would also like to add the scene in Valiant where the protagonist’s crush Victoria tells him that being a hero doesn’t matter, as long as he makes it back safely. Such a powerful line.

I'll always remember the opening scene of Valiant, where the messenger pigeons are picked off, one by one, by the falcons. It's such a dark scene, and it only gets more disturbing when you see that the General had their corpses stuffed.
This channel has charm and wit you dont often see from bigger channels, and has slowly grown on me through its catalogue, you guys are making a difference, dont let anyone tell you otherwise

I love that this is one of those channels with a sort of meta narrative, you know with a cast of animated characters and everything. Except they upload so rarely I dont really even know what the plot is.
There's something weirdly charming about that imo, because im not following a story at this point, its just, there is a setting for a world and it just kind of exists as a backdrop to the commentary content.

I'd say for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, the villain Chester V is the best aspect about the film. He's one of the best twist villains of the past decade, as the movie wastes no time in showing the audience that he's a villain, it's just a twist for the main character. Also, his evil plan also has kind of a point, as he's been secretly planning of getting rid of food-animal mutants.
That's a genuinley good movie though.

Illumination is an odd beast when it comes to film studios. You want to condemn them for being "The Minions People", making mediocre but otherwise harmless schlock; But you have to also commend them for being able to put out actually watchable animated children's films when The Mouse and his contemporaries have been fumbling the bag.

All I remember about Planet 51 was that the movie thought that the 1950s were really funny for some reason.
I think about this a lot with Madagascar 3 of all things. The "impossible ring" scene is something I feel that's genuinely poignant and thought provoking...and it comes from the "dada afro circus" movie. That one scene is keeping this movie alive in my memory banks and I don't know how to feel about that.
The scene where the animals are put back in the zoo, and they see it not as a paradise anymore but as a loud suffocating place, and then the lady about to shoot Alex with the intent of killing him, with Alex accepting it, that scene got me, and destroyed my spirit
The World Gobbler fight from the Dragon Hunters movie was imo really memorable.
I need to try and find that movie some day. I remember watching it as a kid, but don't have a d*mn clue what actually happened in it.
Awesome to see the Dragon Hunters movie being mentioned. Was a very artistically strong movie. Beautiful music too with Jalan Jalan - Lotus.
I feel like ppl would understand Planet 51 better if they actually knew what the American 50s were like. I think it's greatest flaw is that it was TOO spot on to the American 50s to the point it was too "alien" to the younger audience the movie was intended for. It did a better adaptive job, and has an honest in-depth view into their lives and how they saw and thought than MOST period movies about that time today that it's a shame ppl aren't doing entire video essays about it because there is MUCH to say for Planet 51 that ppl are SLEEPING on. This is one of the most American movies I've seen, that doubles as a homage to a time period and culture. Which were also it's flaws bc this absolutely fell flat to foreigners, including recently immigrated. It ALSO has the pacing, thought process, and tone of an American 50s movie/media. Another point to it's downfall bc that translates to mediocre for today's standards. But if you grew up with American 50s media, that slower and simpler story/pace feels very familiar.
Even the newer references like the Xenomorphs were often unfamiliar because those are from ADULT horror movies, and obviously not many kids have seen those if they are watching the safe Planet 51. It's so alien to the younger audience, that many couldn't even figure out which time period it was representing, thinking it was just the Aliens having a quirky alien aesthetic/lifestyle not based on a literal time period. They couldn't figure it out even after the Astronaut makes the "future" 60s reference. That movie relied almost entirely on already knowing, or already being familiar with, so much and if you didn't than I can imagine how out of touch it would be. I feel like the Director(s) made a movie from the heart, from something they knew so much about or experienced (a literal love letter to that time), but forgot that the 50s is largely forgotten by most of the populace, only being highly romanticized in very particular areas, and this movie specifically avoided many of those areas thus taking away what little familiarity it COULD have had.
As someone who had to do a report on McCarthyism and the era of the "red scare", Planet 51 did a really great job at making an alternate 50's America. Kinda of have to give props to the movie for managing all that and still managing to make it (semi) kid friendly.
I'll admit, as a massive Sherlock Holmes fan, Sherlock Gnomes is one of the only films I still hadn't seen - I just never thought there'd be anything interesting there. But your segment about it has convinced me to give it an honest chance and judge it for myself. ESPECIALLY the mind palace segments, I had no idea the movie included them, let alone put so much loving detail into them. I doubt it'll be anywhere near the Great Mouse Detective (still one of the best portrayals of Holmes and I will die on that hill) but I'm sure it'll be a fun time regardless!
I couldn't finish watching it 😭😭 the dynamic between Holmes and Watson was just too FREAKING ANNOYING for me. LIKE THE WHOLE IDEA IS THAT SHERLOCK *WANTS* WATSON BY HIS SIDE. GRAAAHHHHHHH. I might give it another shot after finding out about the thought process, though.
I just finished it and to be honest I had that EXACT same thought for most of the movie, so I FULLY empathize - it felt like the movie didn't understand Watson as a character at all or acknowledge their bond... But as I kept going with it, I realized that it was actually intentional, and instead of misunderstanding their dynamic it was actually using the change in it to *say something*. I won't spoil what it is, but honestly I found the idea genuinely compelling (even if the way it's handled isn't perfect) and bc of that the third act really saves the movie for me. I recommend sticking it out, it's still not the best Sherlock and Watson I've seen, but it does have heart if you're willing to give it another shot

One of my teachers was actually a producer for area 51 and he told us the concept artist had a field day making every single visual element in the planet round, inspired by the fifties and those circles rhat appeared in fields.
I feel like Sherlock Gnomes is the epitome of "ads making a movie look bland" because wow, while I'm sure the end result is still mid, it at least LOOKS interesting, an opinion I never had from adverts.
And man, how do I wish Eight Crazy Nights was another Uncut Gems moment for Sandler by being a more dramatic turn for the actor. The animation is so, so, so, so good for a movie littered with pissing and farting.
For the alien rock movie, I believe the scene with the commander getting electrocuted but refusing to fall down and pass out and actually succeeding was cool and funny as hell
I loved "We're Back" when I was a kid, as simple as the movie is, Little me adored the movie, and Big me adores the artstyle.
And while the Circus of Fear and Professor Screweye's death didn't manage to make it into the small list of things that scared me as a child, the switch up in tone and colors and the way it was all presented did leave me breathless and amazed.
Also, the child asking their parents to bring them to a Sherlock Holmes movie? That was me... I was that child. I've loved Sherlock ever since my mom brought home this DVD filled with old timey Christmas specials, and I watched him solve a crime about a prison escape and figgy pudding.

my biggest issue with the croods 2 was the fact that guy had to understand everything from Eep's perspective. While Eep had to learn that she still loved guy. Instead of realizing that maybe she had to see guy from a new light, guy wasn't a daring explorer/adventurer. He was just a survivor, everything he's done was to reduce risk to increase his chances of living for another day. Eep should've realized that guy wasn't the guy she made him out to be and the two at an equal level discuss their relationship. Where they would have to have to talk things out and have a level of compromise to make the relationship work.

Honestly, I feel the Grinch was okay, but what really shined was them just making Suessian gizmos. And I agree, that dinner scene was actually a really nice take on the conclusion of the story.

My personal one is Muru's Chant/Song from Balto 2! Mediocre as hell movie, forgot pretty much all of it once it was finished, but that song captured my attention immediately and I even downloaded it later because it was so soothing!
That movie is the ultimate gateway drug for cringe wolf kids, and I LOVE it.
Balto's daughter is only a quarter wolf, but learns wolfish behavior naturally and is kept in the dark about it all her life, and Balto eventually telling her what she is prompts her to run away and follow some dream. Btw Balto has been having dreams of his own the entire movie, though moreso ugly cgi nightmares. There's a totem pole (ew) where each animal represents a point of character to acknowledge and overcome, and those animals manifest in the world to mess with Balto and Aloo. Also Balto's mother's ghost is the one orchestrating all those encounters. Then when Aloo makes it to the wolf pack there's a subplot about the pack going into a civil war, and the leader of the good guy side has magic for some reason. Then during the climax Aloo becomes the leader of what remains of the good guy side and gets literally separated from everything she knew before and we don't see what happens to her afterwards, only assured that her destiny was to be a leader and she's going to be great at it.
You've probably already guessed it but Aloo is very much an everyman self-insert character. Though I think after the current boom of isekai anime having a nothing protagonist for us girls is much appreciated.
I also love the song "Who are you"!

I have to say I was split on the WBADS review. But that’s entirely due to bias. But one thing that I fully agree on was that ScrewEyes really did take control of the movie.
Even as a little kid, that part was always to strangely alluring despite being frightening.
But so is human nature, we love fear just as much as wonder. Who doesn’t love salsa and ice cream after all? ((Hopefully not together or you get a mix similar to most of these movies))
The Grinch- you landed my exact feelings to illuminations movies. Pretty, but very plastic.
I really can’t add more to that. Only that I think it’s hilarious people to this day will gripe about Godzilla’98 being a ripoff when movies like illumination just bank on memeage and very quickly tired out references.
Leave it to you to make me realize a thing, and it’s that 8CN was familiar for a reason. The Iron Giant crew huh??? No wonder I loved the animation in that movie.
Granted I childishly loved this movie as a- well a child… it’s lost its luster as my amusement shifted considerably. But yeah. You’re right. That one song still occasionally lives rent free in my head.
The Croods movie was a guilty liking tbh. But I only ever watched it once.
It’s one of those movies that’s kinda fun to watch just for the hell of it- but yes it greatly pales in comparison to its much superior predecessor.
Honestly I look at it the same way as the series (which I’ve not watched) an alt universe situation. Nothing more. To be enjoyed at one’s own discretion.
Planet 51 is a guilty pleasure. Idk why but the simplicity of one twist for that film just worked for me. (AWSOME among us ref btw).
It also taught me a distinctly important lesson: vaccinate your pets because space rabies is horrifying.
And as for Sherlock Gnomes- yeah I haven’t see that movie, though I did see a clip of the villain which, somehow surprised me. Something about his let off at the end was interesting. Idk. Probably misremembering.
But definitely will take a look at that sequence. Looks fun!

Oh man! I remembered seeing “We’re Back! A Dinosaur Story” I think on Cartoon Network around Thanksgiving one year, and it was such a bizarre experience for me. Not much else stuck with me outside of John Goodman as Rex, but Screw-Eyes death scene really had me stunned in more ways than I expected. And thought the most macabre thing I watched as a kid was Nightmare Before Christmas, but that scene definitely stuck with me beyond anything else in this film.

Also I relate so hard at only associating planet 51 to the galaxy bowling posters lol, I guess it’s kind off a good thing that they aren’t there anymore but dude, they stayed there all my childhood and even some years after I became an adult.

Recommendation if this becomes a series: Horton Hears A Who, theres a few good scenes but the emotional ones hit the best (mountain chase and the climax ending). Personally I don't think it's a mediocre film but I'm part of the 1%, I just want more attention on my favorite movie and got really excited when you mentioned it bc at least most agree that it's the best adaptation

The opening scene of the 1986 Transformers movie has always stuck with me due to the subtle existential horror. It introduces us to Lithone, a lively planet with a thriving civilization of people going about their daily lives… and then Unicron, the living metal planet, comes along and completely devours it before just moving on to find a new planet to consume. Like, imagine that happening to Earth; our billion year history and the countless beings living on it, wiped out in minutes for this thing’s Tuesday lunch. Combine that with glorious animation and an amazing score by Vince DiCola (the Rocky 4 composer) and you’ve got a super underrated scene from an honestly great movie.

Mario movie definitely wasn't pandered by critics. Critics and most of Hollywood seemed to hate that such a simple movie based on video game was making so much money. They were seething about it.
I don't think Planet 51 is a mediocre movie. In fact, it's way better then four movies on this list.
Say what you will about 8 crazy nights, the animation studio is insane for actually trying. Everything looks designed carefully, even the worse bits look like a art team really gave a damn. I was this old when I realized the team behind iron giant worked on it, but man it shows.
Love it love it love it! Great video, I like how you recognize that this movies having good scenes don't make them good movies automatically while still not bashing them completely I love the concept of finding hidden gems in mid animation movies most people have never watch it's very interesting

I actually enjoyed quite a few scenes from Monsters Vs Aliens. The monsters are decent references to the movies they came from. Susan suddenly being forced to adjust to her sudden transformation and her breakdown when she sees the cheesy "Hang in there" poster is pretty sad and appropriate. And if you live in California, the joke about her honeymoon being moved from Paris to Fresno is pretty funny.
"We're Back" holds a special, nostalgic place in my heart. The musical number is fun but the entire circus arc was everything my Halloween loving heart adored as a child ("let no bad things happen" excepted seriously who wrote that line).

it's a music number; in sing 2 the final act is a whole musical they put together and the plot is the main character of the performance is an astronaut going from planet to planet in search of a missing person (in the actual movie plot he's a famous singer that's been in retirement for like 15 something years who came back for the performance). don't ask why i remember this (i worked at a daycare around when this came out and i had to watch it like twice a week cos the kids were obsessed with it lmao. also the movie is pretty decent)

Afaik, "We're Back!" is so weird because it was basically an hour long self-promotion video for the studio. Don't look at the plot, look at how they portray things - they show comedy, they show drama, they show light-hearted and scary scenes, they show things small and ginormous, and they do it WELL. This movie looks way better than it has any right to. Because it's not a movie in a conventional sense of the word, It's a self-promo reel loosely tied together by the plot from a children's book to show that the studio was capable of portraying any script you throw their way.
