Jar Jar IS the most relatable character in Clone Wars series. Face it. If you were dropped in this war, you’d be just like him. Except you wouldn’t get a royal girlfriend

11:10 which is why it would have been perfect had JarJar secretly been a sith the whole time. His voice causing an innate sense of danger and discomfort? That's prime villain stuff.

especially to Jedi. his entire persona seems geared towards destabilizing the mind, making it harder to clearly sense the force. his entire mission could have been to lead Qui-Gon Jinn to Anakin and keep their minds destabilized, clouded, so it's harder to sense the larger plot afoot.

    1. Jar Jar's presence demonstrates Qui-Gon's compassion, as he was banished from his home.
    2. As a native to Naboo, Jar Jar acts as a guide to the Gungan's for the other protagonists.
    3. Padme forming an allegiance with Boss Nass & the Gungans wouldn't have happened had Jar Jar's not befriended her.
Jar Jar is not a useless character.
He's just grating because his execution was just botched in production and your bias prevents you from seeing what value he does bring to the film.
You could write him out with a few tweaks sure, but that's true for most characters in entertainment.
One character can have multiple narrative purposes, but splitting them up amongst multiple characters allows for a greater exploration of character dynamics.

I'm way late to the train on this, but I felt like this was worth sharing. When I was a kid, one of my cousins had a statue of Jar Jar in his bedroom when he lived at my grandmothers' place, and throughout my entire childhood I was absolutely terrified to enter his room purely because of Jar Jar. Every time I went into his room I would see the statue and freak out, and it wasn't until I had to sit in front of the statue for a minute "to realize it wasn't going to hurt me" that I wasn't freaked out by it.

In my opinion Jar Jar is tragedy disguised as comedy. He's a normal, likely below average person dragged into greater things and unable to cope. He freezes at the sight of danger, isn't very brave, is a little stupid and rather clumsy. While annoying to be around the character is ultimately sympathetic as a put upon soul surrounded by giants. He would have ultimately been happier as a farmer and family man, but events in the galaxy thrust him into positions where he not only didn't know what to do but what help he received while there wasn't help at all. He's a victim with strong morals, but neither the courage nor skill to act upon them. HIs life debt that he follows means he's honourable, his distaste at the state of slaves means he's empathetic, he outright faints when being made a general meaning he's very aware that he's not suited for the tasks thrust upon him and is humble, yet he still remembers his friends as his reaction to Obi and Anakin show that he remembers them fondly despite years passing. A good man, but in the wrong place.
If his purpose in the story was to shelter the jedi on his fish hatchery or hide them in his swamp based farm then be rescued by them then he'd be remembered as a somewhat important and silly character but completely inoffensive and even liked. It's that a normal person was thrust into the light beside titans that so many people grew to dislike him despite him very much being just a person and not a living legend.

I think you just explained why I always felt sad seeing the character, even as a child. As someone who grew up a wunderkind, but with major imposter syndrome the whole time... You basically just described how I felt much of my life. Grew up learning about the greats in science and engineering, constantly feeling compared to them since I was on track to being like them... But never feeling like my real skills could ever hold up compared to people like them (which was ridiculous, I was a child/teen, of course I wasnt there yet). Then I failed out at college, after 3.8-3.9 gpa all through K-12... I was just... Burnt out. Lamented never having a normal life, lamented never developing normal social skills, lamented being just clumsy and cringe socially and physically.
Things in some ways got worse when I joined the USAF to become a jet engune mechanic, a physically demanding job requiring far better coordination than I ever had. I felt it would be a challenge, like, if I could make it through that career, I would have fixed my personal issues. In some ways those first three years only made it worse. I barely made it through BMT, was thrown into the pacific and worked to death as our tankers were tasked with refueling everything on that side of the planet, much of which was flying real world missions, or intense exercises to try to scare China. The strategic situation makes your contributions feel puny, and your failures 100 times worse.
I'm doing a lot better now. I got out, after finally establishing myself as a decent jet engine mechanic, and decent trainer of new airmen. I keep myself healthier than I did before. I actually value work/life balance, striving for simplicity in my day to day life. And at 26, I've been maintaining a 4.0 in a physics degree.
... Doesnt stop me remembering it took me 8 years to get back on track for my goals in life. Right now, Im about where I could have been 8 years ago if I applied myself. I guess part of it is I stopped caring whether I'd wind up in a science textbook someday... I think the pressure just made me fumble a lot. If I ever have kids, I'm not putting them through all that. Jar Jar feels like some kind of fish out of water story (I guess literally, lol), and thats how I felt my entire life. Wherever I go, I've felt like I somehow didnt belong.
Probably the most comforting thing was learning this happens to a lot of smart kids. HealthyGamerGG has a whole video on how early burnout is statistically likely to happen to people who are successful academically that early in life. Its because that success often comes at the expense of developing many other required skills and the effort required to maintain that pace is unsustainable. Literally, more normal kids see less setbacks like these in their lives, and so, achieve greater success later in life, as they took a slower and steadier approach to academics.

9:11 there's another side to this effect. If something is *too* reliant on these aspects, it wont be cute because its trying to hard. People see right through it.
So actually JarJar looking like he does was a step in the right direction, all he needed was a few more kinderschema aspects and he'd be golden.

  • @Chronoplague
    @Chronoplague 3 роки тому +17

I think it’s important to remember that George Lucas’ contract included a cut from toy sales, incentivizing him to create characters that could be marketed as toys, hence Ewoks and Jar Jar, but also fan favorites like Boba Fett and Darth Maul. It’s a pretty rare situation, since typically the studio is the rights holder for a film franchise’s merchandising.

I read somewhere that Jar Jar was originally conceived as a morally ambiguous bounty-hunter, if that's true, his design makes a lot more sense and one of Lucas and Co. mistakes was to not modify enough of the original design once his personality changed from shady dude to buffoon... also someone on a blog once called Jar Jar "Chewacca donne very wrong"

I think it was a mistake to not actually play audio of Jarjar talking because I know using audio from films is pretty iffy, but it would have helped a lot to show how his way of talking is really annoying while you're describing the different aspects of his speech.
Outside of that, completely agree with this outside of the ending. It's all well and good to say Jar Jar is meant to teach us to see the humanity in clumsy people... but that only really works if I see him as an actual character. And I don't. Because there's nothing deeper about him that would suggest he's a person, he's just a complete stooge the entire way through the film who never gets any moments of genuine introspection to ground his actions. That's honestly probably the biggest death nail for his character over everything else, that he's annoying but we never see things from his point of view, we only see how he acts and is treated from the outside. And a lot of that comes down to writing, but the directing is also a bit to blame as well.

There is another thing that is over looked about Jar Jar and when I realised it Jar Jar became a character I actually like... Without Jar jar the story as a whole is just.... Politics. Without Jar jar you'd have the similar feel to turning the political debates of people trying to become the next president with a few battles which isn't exactly something I personally enjoy seeing. With Jar Jar being there to break the tension it changes the scenes he is in from a slog to something slightly more.
Example take the battle between the droids and the Gungan. If Jar Jar wasn't there messing things up it'd be kind of a boring fight.
Another example the dinner scene if Jar Jar wasn't there it'd just be talking and talking and talking with nothing really going on.
His actions may annoy yes but it makes you feel something then nothing at all.

To be fair, I'd have loved if Jar Jar was actually a Sith in disguise. I really like when the "comic relief" character actually reveal itself to be the villain when it's well done. Especially if they do keep some of their hamminess and cheerful persona but twist it in a dark way after the reveal. The result is a "villanous clown" that, as the Joker proved, is one of the most intriguing villain archetype of all times.

I am so sad about Jar Jar.
Because the actor was so, so good at portraying him, but he had so little to work with.
And as you kind of touch on in the end bit: it would have been so easy to just add a scene or two or tweak some things and make him a beloved character because over all he isn't a bad character, he was just a unneeded one.

I like the idea of a lack comedy following a squad of Stormtroopers as they commit warcrimes and wipe out the Gungans, only to end up in stitches over the zany ways in which Gungans do things like try to fight back or fly through the air when hit by grenades.

I think there's also an idea of empathy in comedy that people forget about. Jar-Jar was apparently an exile so in theory sympathies would be on his side. But with all of his antic behavior you didn't see someone kindly or well meaning who was a loveable screw-up (which could have worked well with the physical comedy angle where you could feel sympathy for him) but instead someone who seemed to keep failing upwards, and kept succeeding through happenstance instead of any legitimate labors or efforts. He also didn't seem to recognize that he might be a problem for others. The problem is that the relatable parts of Jar-Jar would be more things that were negative in other people that were frustrating or felt like a burden to be around
