We continue the work on rebuilding the engine on the 1991 Polaris Indy 500. The crankshaft has been repaired and now it's time to get it reassembled.
Follow along and for the process..
Word of advice. Get the pistons seated in the bore just far enough first. Then line the crank up and put the pins in next. Way less struggling.

Loved my 91 500. I had it setup strickly for lake trout fishing. Bought it cheap from a buddy who didn't maintain it at all. Great first sled where I learned how to take care of the skid, how to rebuild Fox shocks and rebuild a 2 stroke. Kinda wish I hadn't sold it but I was getting into triples.
Never even thought of the seal springs. That's a great idea.
I’ve been thinking about getting another triple to restore over the summer. May go for a RXL since I love to be tortured by early 2 stroke EFI. 😀
I would recommend using a rag to cover the crank case while installing the c clip into the piston. When I was a boy I sold my 82 yz 80 to a kid because I had outgrown it when I did I was honest with him telling him it needed a piston and ring it had alot of hrs on it but I had put a crank in it 3 yrs before that.. and that the bottom end was good.the low compression caused it to start hard. When he did they dropped the c clip in the crank and instead of fishing it out the assembled the engine and fired it up it ran for about 30 seconds before the crank locked up
It was a damn shame I asked about it a few yrs later and it was sitting in some corner of a shed collecting dust. Those 82 yzs were a 1 year run the first liquid cooled bikes offered by yamaha had the radiator mounted to the forks by the handlebars

Absolutely. It’s easier than most people realize. Take your time and be thorough and you should be all set.
Hey man. Sorry to ask another question. I got my 97 indy 500 running great. The stator and flywheel just went bad. And i was wondering if you knew whwre i could get the exact one i need. And also a water pump. Having a hard time finding it thanks.
Best option is FB marketplace or EBay. Sometimes it’s easier and cheaper to pick up a parts sled.
I’m doing a rebuild on a 1998 Indy 500 but size nuts are used for the top cover ??
If it's a 98 Indy 500, it used flange bolts to hold the head down. 1997 engines and below used nuts to attach to the studs that were attached to the cylinder?
Is it a 97 or 98?

Should be. Easiest way to check is to look up the part number on Babbits and check the cross reference
I've always heard the timing on these 500 Fujis was set up quite retarded from optimal. Any truth to that and any chance you can show us how to properly set the timing? Thanks for a great video. Always enjoy your content...
Adjusting the timing on any 2 stroke is a challenge to say the least. Take a look at Rum Rivers Triple video on the process. He has a excellent video on it.

Why are you lubing the bearing bosses in cases bearings do not spin in case they are roller beariing and the oil creates a squish same as putting in a shim, your bearings aren't as tight in case as they should be and the old Polaris engines used an anorobic sealer not a silicone also keeping cases from tightening down on the bearings and seals as they were machined to do.
Surface tension on the outer race will help to transfer oil to the internals of the bearing during initial startup and break in.
