"I'm not interested in you, look at the state of you"
MK x I spot a choni shipper
The only appropriate response to that tbh XD
The way she said that killed me 🤣🤣🤣
@@maxkane1684 same it just kills me the confidence that clare has saying that, i love it
I love her sass and hand on her hip 😂
that “you’re a lethbian?” and “you fancy gerls” took me out
Gerls is also how it's pronounced in Liverpool
Well that's sort of an entry level requirement Erin.
Ooh err Missus.
The way she says “I don’t wanna go back in” hurts my heart.
Yeah, it'd be a pretty horrible thing to hear. Especially then. I would have been about her age at that time and the idea of coming out would have terrified the hell out of me.
Claire is adorable. Too precious for this world.
Omg it gave me flashbacks to my coming out and I cried a little. Love Clare
You fancy girls?
Well that’s sort of an entry level requirement
😂😂😂
I fancy Claire.
“don’t come out, go back in” she was a jerk but the way she said it had me rolling 😂
“Look at the state’e’you” PERFECT 🤣🤣🤣
"Everything makes you nervous Claire you're a walking cack attack."
"Its just the way God made me.."
I absolutely loved this series. I think it’s great the way Gerry says “she hasn’t gone anywhere” when Erin says she just wants her old friend back, a brilliant message to send to young people. Any comedy that can combine genuine laugh out loud humour with real life, serious situations that can move a viewer and make them think is alright by me
Even from Ireland like xD
Si Regan I
I’m surprised grandpa didn’t jump in with “well you should go somewhere… ya prick”
It’s hard to believe the actress who plays Clare is 32! She’s extremely convincing as a teenager.
Wait she’s 32, she really doesn’t look it 😳
Dammm she looks 16
Jeez, I just checked and none of them are below 27, and yes the actress playing Clair is 32.
What? Seriously?
Wait what- I thought her actress was actually young damn
“Look qt the state of you.” THE WAY SHE SAYS IT I CANTT
This is so brilliantly written. "Gerry says, 'She hasn't gone anywhere love." The seriousness of that is immediately punctuated by the girl falling off her step exercise thing. LOL That's brilliant writing.
I don't know about brilliant writing.. it's funny and that's about it.
@@giocicada That's an over reaction.
@@giocicada what are you being so rude lmao
@@giocicada i think the sad person is another one if you're getting offended so easily about smth
Claire never looked prettier than she did here. She has this sort of happiness around her, she looks almost like she's glowing because of it. Makes her look really pretty.
1:22
Clare's face makes me want to hug her, Erin was such a jerk here
and "...I really thought you'd understand" is a killer line.
I always wanna hug Clare she’s such a sweetheart
Yeah, but tbf it's more realistic for back then in N. Ireland. Even now that place is 20 years behind the rest of us, it's why my family moved away!
i know right
I *love* that they gave Erin that reaction, especially because she acted so supportive of the anonymous lesbian before realizing it was one of her closest friends. It was heartbreaking, but also realistic.
The girls facial expressions are quite brilliant.
It’s me, I’m the wee Whistledown
I love how consistent this is with the character's flaws. Claire's known to be a nervous wreck and this was likely a moment that made her feel so confident since she was getting the feeling she'd feel less alone, and Erin's narcissism about making a difference with the school paper could end up being overshadowed by Claire's coming out, it makes sense to me that she'd panic and resort to what she ends up saying, even if she definitely doesn't mean it. Love that with Claire's newfound confidence here, she claps back saying she wouldn't fancy Erin. A lesser writer would have made this overly soppy or sentimental with Erin hugging and embracing Claire, or Claire basically winking at the audience about how homophobia is wrong. Lisa McGee is a genius when it comes to character-driven comedy. This show could be taught in screenwriting classes.
“Go back in”
Izzy Burn ;d
I laughed at that wh3n I watched it for liek 10 yrs
That is basically what i'm dealing with everytime I come out 🤣
@@HaTran-sp7pf user name checks out
‘We’ll go back in’ was both hilarious & heartbreaking. Can’t help but find it funny yet at the same time Claire must have felt 100 times worse after it being the first reaction she received, & from her best friend☹️
This scene is one of my favourites from the first season, as you can relate to both Clare and Erin, and see both of their viewpoints. Clare has grappled with her sexuality for some time, but is disappointed that Erin doesn't have the reaction that she expected her to have.
Meanwhile, Erin is just shocked that the image of someone she's likely known her whole life is suddenly distorted. I agree with Erin's actress when she stated that Erin wasn't being homophobic, but was struggling to put the pieces together, and that she's not nearly as worldly or Liberal as she tries to present to others, like a typical teenager.
I think Erin is such an accurate portrayal of a typical teenager here. She wants to be progressive and open-minded, but she has so little experience with some things that when she’s faced with the reality rather than just the theory she’s thrown completely off-balance. And she stumbles into some status quo bigotry that she immediately regrets. It’s especially common in teenagers who haven’t had a lot of worldly experiences yet, but I think it happens to us all from time to time. It’s a very humbling scene.
And Claire is just perfect. Her typical nervous energy, plus the excitement of being open about who she is, plus the disappointment in her friend.
@@TeaReesa26 exactly! I loved this scene exactly because Erin didn't have a pitch perfect reaction.
That is homophobia though, it's just that she knows it's wrong and is actively working on it, which makes all the difference. But it's still the homophobia that has been instilled in her since childhood showing itself.
So we're all just gonna ignore Orla falling down at the end?
Orla is the best 😂😂😂
"You know what else is staggering? Your gayness!"
Kills me everytime
Dont come out go back in hahaha
The writers handled this scene perfectly. It was the 90’s in Northern Ireland, so the general attitude towards LGBTQ people would’ve been apprehensive at best.
However, Erin is never blatantly homophobic towards Clare. She’s shocked and lashes out, which is very in-character, and she bashes on Clare because she feels blindsided. Yet she doesn’t actually have it in her to penalize her best friend because she’s a lesbian. Notice that none of Erin’s dialogue suggests that she doesn’t support gay rights--in fact, this whole episode proves that she does. She just wasn’t expecting it to be Clare.
The way she instantly regrets her reaction and fiercely supports Clare for the remainder of the show is so perfect. It’s true to the time (not as openly accepting) but also doesn’t dehumanize Erin, who is naturally a hot-headed and emotional person.
Erin says she wants to "boke" (vomit), tells her not to have a crush on her, yells at her to go back in the closet, etc, and you're saying she was never blatantly homophobic??
@@mollybradley6429 in this specific scene, yes, she’s definitely being homophobic. I’m in no way denying that. I meant *from then on,* in the rest of the episode. She’s full of remorse in the immediate next scene, constantly expressing her regret, and tries to find ways to prove her support to Clare (whilst also being extremely careful about what she says as to not hurt her further). Simultaneously, Clare is recognizing her own self-worth leading up to the point where she forgives Erin. It‘s a turning point for both of their characters’ development going into series 2. Looking back a year later, I can see that it seems like I’m only talking about this one scene, but I was just using it as a kick-off point.
She was blatantly homophobic lol 😂but the times were different
@@mollybradley6429 I think ppl confuse being homophobic as such, like a person that would NEVER accept LGTBIQ+ populations rights / humanity (VS) having an homophobic moment/attitude.
Psychological research has shown that we all have biases. You can call it the struggle between the subconscious and conscious mind, the system 1 and 2, or implicit vs explicit attitudes/behavior/ideas. But the thing is or subconscious/implicit/emotional brain reacts faster than our conscious/explicit/rational one, especially in stressful or everyday/fast assessments. And prejudice and discrimination are not rational, they are very emotional illogical beliefs that go very deep into our subconscious mind.
So, you can be a huge LGTBIQ+ supporter rationally/consciously bc you have learned/worked on deconstructing that prejudice. And YET you can still have implicit/subconscious bias against gay ppl, bc of upbringing or just simply bc your brain caught that from your environment. And when you are faced with a stressful situation these biases come out easier than your rational judgement.
Best case to describe this.
You are in a dangerous area, and see a person that looks as a stereotype of what a criminal is (gender race class etc biases), and this person is coming your way. You could 'be better' and decide to not let those prejudices tell you what to do. Or you could cross the street and just be sure you are safe. Most ppl will do the second.
In this video, Erin is a Catholic girl in the 90s Ireland - very conservative even for women, so imagine ab LGTBIQ rights. Despite that, she has been educated to be better. However, being faced to this shocking surprise that could change one of the most meaningful relationships she has, Well, her biased attitudes won over and made her react poorly. Same as when Claire just wanted to hide she was lesbian, despite she knows her friends are LGTBIQ friendly 🤷🏽♀️
Someone who says that they've never been racist, sexist, homophobic etc when there's no society in the world that is not, is just lying to themselves. A good ally knows that we all have failed, but we just have to work to do better and train our implicit bias. After all, is not our fault our societies/context put those prejudices on us, but is our work to confront and fight them back.
Gay. Gay people. Not LGBTQABCDEFD people.
WHEN ORLA JUST CASUALLY FELL I LOST IT
Trust Orla to do that 😁
I think this show surpasses the Inbetweeners in many ways. The show in its first series had more subtle over arching storylines, more pointnent moments especially the last seen during the talent show. realism (I grew up in northern Ireland during this era, it's very true to life). the jokes in some scenes were beautifully brought together, like the detention scene.
I think The Inbetweeners tried too hard to be crude at times. Whereas Derry Girls is more about childhood and growing up, in an entirely different setting.
No it doesn’t. As a comedy, no it doesn’t. It’s not as funny. Don’t compare this to the inbetweeners ffs
@@DeezN1892 You're aware people can have different opinions and tastes, right? "Don't compare them", get fucked.
i think the thing the inbetweeners has going for that's a good laugh and its crude as fuck, and personally is easier to sit down and rewatch any episode.
but overall Derry Girls is far better, its far more mature, endeering and subtle
besides, honestly, acting is just so much better here.
Don’t think it’s right to compare the two because while some may see similarities they were two different beasts. One was a show that was essentially a British version of American Pie that worked because it took all the glamour and hollywoodisms out of teenage sexual courtship and showed the crude realities of awkward teenagers in the late 2000s. This whole show is a love letter to the 90s and isn’t about horny sex mad teenage boys but about working class young women and the quirkiness of their shenanigans. It’s like comparing Lady Bird to Superbad because they both take place in America
Erin seriously needs to calm down sometimes
cookiemonster03 truest statement ever
Yeah she’s like simon from the inbetweeners
@@niamyers6640 Needs to catch herself on.
Teenagers tend to have hightened emotions
Highly unlikely considering she's a teenager and most teenager are the complete opposite of "calm" plus i love erin she reminds me of myself when i was 13/14 lol
“Go back in” ive been laughing at this for 5 minutes 😂
The hand motion really did it for me
Love how they all wear rainbow pins after this moment to support Clare
"Don't blame me" Oh my goodness that is so funny, her facial expressions. What a wonderful and gifted actress. I hope the show goes on and on as long as they find it as funny making as I do enjoy watching. And the accent, wow. It takes a few times to understand what they are saying.
"Look at the state of you"
well, nobody believed it was michelle...
sn4rff I thought it was Michelle
I wanted it to be
@@marthab-c5226 me too!
Honestly it could have been Orla, she's always full of surprises
The whispered "Lethbian" at 0:40 made me laugh so freaking hard and "look at the state of you!" took me clean out with no chance of recovery🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭 This is one of the top comedies that ever aired. I miss it so much
WHY is this equal parts triggering and hilarious? 😭😂
I love how this scene is relatable to me. My friends distanced me for a few days after I came out to them. No, not because they’re homophobic, it’s that they thought they knew me well enough and they’ve just distraught by the fact that I chose to hide this from them. Flash forward to now they’ll actually introduce me to their gay friends in hopes we’ll end up together haha
'Well go back in' lmao
A great series, funny and yet serious, loved the entire cast, great writing and so accurate for the period.
"Everythin' makes you nervous, Clare. You're a walkin' cack attack"
"I can't help that, its the way God made me" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
There'll never be another show like this again
"I'm not interested in you like that either, look at the state of ya'"
The way Erin said "Go back in" with that hand gesture sent me to the floor.😅 What a brilliant scene - simultaneously hilarious and sombre.
“You made me realise its ok”
“Dont blame me”
Orla falling down and aunt Sarah lighting a cigarette at the same time is my favourite bit
I can never watch the girl falling down at the end just once, it gets me every time!
Anyone else LOVE DERRY GIRLS?!
Claire: I’m trying to come out here
Erin: Don’t come out, go back in
Me: 😂😂
For mine this scene is the highlight of the series so far. Yes the writing is brilliant but even if you write the best piece in the world, sub-par actors will make it rubbish. And this scene for me shows the incredible depth of talent in not just Nicola but Saoirse too. The hand movement in "go back in" for instance is done as a defensive move instead of an aggressive one, and I think that's an important part of Erin's character to establish here. The facial expressions are spot on too, you just want to give Clare a hug even though you know its acted, and that acting is not as easy to do as it sounds. These great actors are really on point with the subtleties in this scene which make it more memorable than the ones with simply great writing.
"Not interested in you like that" Look at the STATE of you! I am fucking DEAD
i relate to claire so much. i came out in a religious highschool and some of my classmates were horrible to me. this scene just brought up so many emotions.
Alright youtube recommendation i'll watch this series.
This is equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious. I love the realism of it, though. I've had female friends say they're not interested in me / hope I don't have a crush on them after telling them I'm a lesbian, too. As if like 😪 I still love Erin because she then realised she was wrong & is completely supportive of Clare for the rest of the series 🥰
"I can't help it it's the way god made me" 😍
Funny, when I came out my sister said the same thing, “go back in (the closet)”. Seeing it here, this scene really does a good job of how it can be coming out to friends. I lost a few when I did. Love Claire’s character and all of Nicolas irl success.
"Look at the state of yeh, Erin" "your arrogance is staggering Erin" 😂😂😂
"You know what else is staggering? Your gayness"😭
Omg Nicola looks absolutely adorable in this role and very funny too!
OMG, I love this series. Just started last night after seeing all the quick reels on TikTok.
*_you know what else is staggering? your gayness_*
ME HAHAHA
Catch yourself on!!
Such a good show. “You fancy girls?” “That’s kind of an entry level requirement.”
Every line in this scene is a banger
This is great news. It's really difficult growing gay. Having it on TV is probably preventing suicide.
‘You fancy gyerls?’
"would you mind, I'm trying to come out to you"
"Well don't come out, go back in!"
1:15 Look at the state of you
I love her confidence there
Ye wokkin cakattak
Orla falling at the end is writing perfection!
I don't think erin is homophobic, it's important to keep in mind that this is 20 years ago and Erin goes to a Catholic school and has a Catholic upbringing. I think this reaction is very realistic and portrays erin as a flawed character because we have to remember that they're sheltered teenagers in this show
She was shocked but we can see all of them accepted Clare really well
i think about this all the time
I’ve memorise the entire scene of by heart ❤️❤️❤️
Claire is such a sweetheart!
I'm upset I love this show that much I don't want it to end
I loved Clare from the start
“Don’t come out go back in”
I haven't seen this show but literally every clip I've came across is the most hilarious thing I've ever witnessed, this clip especially is a goldmine!
i’ve been only saying “lethbian” non-stop bc of this scene lol
Subtitles be having trouble with Irish accents
She's comes out to one of her best friends and this is how she acted... I guess it was a way different time back then but this still happens today which sucks.
She should’ve come out to James instead, I like Erin but she is the last person she should’ve come out to
I can see why Erin though. Bear in mind that the girls hadn’t known James for too long by this point, so she probably felt uncomfortable going to James. Orla would be a mixture of nonplussed and confused, and Michelle is the last person I’d come out to!
Nicola is so adorable
I thought it was Jenny Joyce 😂
Well, I wouldn't be surprised, since Jenny Joyce went to prom with Aisling and they seemed to be really close.
Like, at the prom, Aisling's arm was wrapped around Jenny's arm as though she were touching Jenny's muscles or something. and they were laughing with each other while looking each other in the eyes.
she deserved sm better
The ending of Derry Girls was absolutely fantastic! Also quite upsetting.
"don't blame me.." hahaha I'm dead
The subtitles on this are hilariously bad. e.g. "I can't help it, it's the weight gold made me."
Tony Pressley “Ma shales”
"No, it's not, but effort walls."
“Urn, it’s me!” IMD YING
“look at the state of ya” 😂😂😂😂
GO BACK IN🤣🤣
I want to think as highly of myself as Erin does of herself.
I love the way people type out the things they hear in the videos.like we are all deaf.
Nicola is so freaking cute.
absolutely love this scene, it’s brilliantly done
"Look at the state of ya!"
watching derry girls makes me wanna use wee all the time now haha
Ser Barristan looks baffled... :D
Don’t come out go back in 😂😂
I love Orla! And not like that, either. She just cracks me up!
Arrrr clares so cuteee heeheh
I have only just come across this show because of Nicola and Bridgerton i have to watch it now
look at the state of ya
I'm a couple years late to the Fandom I see but I had a feeling.🌝 It came when the group met Peter. Everyone turned around and was so mesmerized or whatever. They couldn't even speak because they were taking him all in. Even James😭😂 Except one person. Clare🤗
“Dont blame me” 🤣
Imagine if Will McKenzie saw this.
