This is not uncommon in countertenor voices - this sort of disconnect from lack of mixing the textures through the middle. That's called "vibrato", and can be notated by putting a wiggly line "~" on top of the note. It's often up to the performer whether to add vibrato or not, depending on the musical style and the artistic choices of the performer.
Higher notes are harder to hear but the lower quality tend to be shallower because males tend to have a further developed chest voice that it is hard to incorporate the lower notes with it

not necessarily. A countertenor needs to be comfortable using head voice . speaking voice is chest voice . Many countertenors have baritone speaking voice. if a guy sings tenor well he may not be motivated to relinquish his chest voice .

No voice cracks ever. My highest note ever is C#8 and lowest note E1. My comfort singing range is e#3-g5. What voice type am I. If you want to know more you can ask about it. I will reply
Range has nothing to do with voice type but where your voice produces the best sound...I’m one of those skeptic who don’t believe when others say they can sing this note and that note unless there’s a video to prove it
Exactly, I realized that and appreciate your reply. I always take it as compliment when some guys say "you wow what a beautiful lady singing" directing to sister. I was the one singing the gave the look the sour pucker lip look then it was cool he just dance it off. 4 years now I started from really really to amazing. “Highest note ever is C#8 and lowest note E1” I’m sorry but this is quite unlikely. E1 is a note lower than most Bass singers can sing (the lowest Fach, with the lowest tessitura), and even if so, you’re definitely not singing within the 6th, 7th, or 8th octave.
almost any man with intent and training can sing as counter tenors, by singing exclusively singing in their high registers (in men, this is called the falsetto register). In practice, classical counter Tenor singers are usually natural baritone or bass voices because they produce a reinforced falsetto that gives the impression of a full voice. I would say that male Tenors have this ability inherently, since they are the highest male voices
oh, so that's what it is. As a guy who isn't trained at all for singing and can hit a D2 I don't think countertenor is in my range. I'll just have to listen to Reginald Mobley to get my fix of those beautiful notes rather than make them myself.
I have a big point of contention with the word falsetto and head voice. Can you provide an example of each? Most times people say falsetto when it is head voice. Drives me nuts.
Falsetto is breathy, head voice is not. Simple as that. The distinction is made because a breathy phonation lacks compression sufficient to engage much at all of the vocalis muscle. A “full” phonation involves that compression, causing the whole vocalis muscle to phonate (with CT taking dominance over TA in the case of head voice) and thus leading to a sound with a fairly closed quotient (most of the oscillation comes from the folds touching rather than letting air pass through). But it is arguably a spectrum; it’s just that head voice has more of a standard of fullness than falsetto does a standard of hollowness, and neither is chest voice anyway and thus not as typically of a spoken quality.
@@gillianomotoso328 That is what I think too. As most people are just ignorant and use the f term because a guy is singing high. I always use a spectrogram tool to analyze a vocal production. Head voice shows more overtones than falsetto. Simple and scientific.
Countertenors often sound brighter and lighter than contraltos. Truly a countertenor is akin to a mezzo more than a contralto. Kinda like Tevin Campbell and El DeBarge, lol. A contralto’s chest voice often is more akin to a spinto or dramatic tenor, I’ve found, due to the depth and power.
Some rare cases They have thé tessitura of a soprano and They tenor ranges when speaking sound like a gender hybrid of à High tenor and contralto female
Look up This chicago countertenor Carl Alexander his speaking voice sound between à above average male and a masculine female. Its varies from person To person
Pretty normal since most CTs are using their head voice to sing in the same range that Contralti or rather Mezzos sing. Contralti use their chest voice in that same zone so of course they'll sound bigger.
@@tenor-haute-contre Eh. Contraltos generally use full chest up to about no more than the A4-C5 area from what I’ve found. Beyond that the voice starts mixing into head, and quite rapidly up to D5-E5. The stratification of the male chest voice from the sectioned off male head voice often creates a brightened thinness for the upper range that is sometimes matched in contralto voices (similar to male voices), but developed female voices as a whole generally have a head voice that matches in chiaroscuro with the chest voice. In fact, I’d argue that all “developed” voices have this quality but customs cause different standards regarding that for each voice type. Moreover, tenors often have a more evened out transition from chest to head as their mixed range is more developed than other male voices’.
When you say contralto you seem to be thinking of spinto contraltos such as Lina Mkrtchyan or Aafje Heynis. There are lighter contraltos such as Sonia Prina as well. For a somewhat heavier countertenor timbre check out Erik Kurmangaliev.
Plot twist: There isn't any voice type named "Countertenor", it's just a name given to a male who usually uses his falsetto......... (Yeah countertenor can be a baritone at core😅😅).......
Definitely a voice type, there are men who have developed their head voice and falsetto but it still lacks that feminine quality that's natural for a Countertenor plus they can't sustain singing in that high tessitura for so long.
It's a legitimate voice type. Just because you use falsetto doesn't mean that your comfortable doing it. And timbre counts too. Sopranist Mezzo-Sopranist Altino Contraltino Tenorino Haute Contre It's based on tone and comfortability
Being a natural counter tenor is extremely rare, but you can train to become one. It's just about mastering the range. If you can go from B2 to F5 I would assume you're a tenor. Your voice is already pretty high so you can work on your head voice to access the counter tenor range. Edit: wait you're a man right? 😅
Hey classical Tenor who used to be obsessed with range as a Pop singer here. Don't focus on the extremes of your voice if you are untrained. Work with what you're comfy with the most. Assuming you're a male, don't force your lows, so anything below C2 (my personal limit). As for your highs, the passagio can be as early as C sharp 4 (when I started singing I already cracked there). Treat your voice with care, be patient, and get a teacher who understands your voice. My personal full range would be D2/E2-G5, but I probably don't even use half of that in my classical singing.
I can comfortably sing Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, or Whitney Houston songs even if I'm already a 30 year old man. It doesn't sound like a soprano. I still sound like a man but my key is female. Where do you think I belong?
Thank you for your explanation! It's really easy to understand. Now this video makes me think that BTS Jimin is also a perfect example of a countertenor vocalist, especially his song "promise".
Depends on what you mean by that. If you mean by sing low with their whole voice then of course yes, since most classical CTs are your average dude with a normal Bass/Baritone/Tenor voice (apparently in the majority they're Baritones, dunno why). However, if you're talking about singing with their head voice, which is what they use to sing as a CT, then it's quite hard to bring it down in your lower range.

2:26 bingo! that's what a countertenor is. A male singing in a strengthened falsetto (not the whole vocal cord vibrates just the tip)
I would love to hear you do Cherubino . Oktavian is another possibility.
I heard a countertenor doing Handel's Messiah oratorio and it was amazing. If my eyes were closed I would think it was a woman singing.
I want to hear him sing Whitney Hudson
Same
JESUS, fricken scared me. I'm a bass and hearing what can only be described as an ungodly pitch is crazy to me. Impressive.
1:11 that note is somewhere in between C and B but a bit closer to B
So informative and interesting. Thanks Bor.
Very informative! Thank you!
poor microphone was not ready for voi che sapete :D amazing job and introduction
Question: I found out not too long ago that I'm a countertenor. I'm 33yo with no music school exp. I love singing, playing my guitar and just music in general. Is there any sense in me trying to pursue this?
omg i remember him from his old youtube channel!
When he makes his voice shiver, how are those notes written? I hope I am asking this question where folks know what I mean.
That's called "vibrato", and can be notated by putting a wiggly line "~" on top of the note. It's often up to the performer whether to add vibrato or not, depending on the musical style and the artistic choices of the performer.
*It could also be an ornament such as a trill which was conventionally added at cadences, etc. during the baroque and classical musical eras.*
Big fan here!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reminds me of Sousuke Mitsuba☺️☺️
I was going to ask about Castrati :)
RIP The magnificent James Bowman 😢
i just discovered counter tenor today.
When you hear a countertenor voice,you wonder if it’s a man or a woman😂😂lol
Higher notes are harder to hear but the lower quality tend to be shallower because males tend to have a further developed chest voice that it is hard to incorporate the lower notes with it
then you must hear me, hahaha
@Hellcat Bass I'd like to hear your voice, I just love unique voices like bass and contraltos, I'm just an average tenor
It's hilarious 🤣 pranking people was so fun and their faces when they see it's not a woman
What about that is funny to you? Genuinely curious. Not trying to be antagonistic.
Enjoyed kangmin as Cherubino at ROH
How was that performance in person? How did his voice sound over the orchestra in the hug space? I wasn't able to make that performance sadly
I am contratenor and my voice is really high 😂
who knows the aria he sang at 6:41 please tell me 😊
Voi che sapete. Nozzi di figaro
Thank u for this very informative video! Any Teacher Recommendations who know how to work with countertenors in the New York City?
Would be highly appreciated...most teachers didn’t know what to do with my countertenor voice
Thank you
You BECOME Countertenor. You don't naturally work with that voice but you build it
basically falsetto all the way to get one octave higher
Alfred Deller 🐐
I love this.
Yes, unexpected range. surprise.))
His famous "countertenor" roles and arias are actually mezzo and contralto trouser roles xd
Hahaha what a goose! 🙄
@@jarrodhall3686 pardon? He even admitted that
@@davidmuller9938 they weren't written for mezzo or contralto. They were written for men. So men singing is how it should be......how do u not know that
@@thesaucegroup1877 Cherubino and Orlofsky were written for women.
im 29 yo male, but my voice range is just in sopran range. my voice type is just very light like justin bieber when he is still a kid. i can sing any sopranos song with belting technique (adapted to the needs of singing).
am i still counted as a countertenor or a sopranos?
Sopranist but you'd likely be classified as a countertenor. Countertenors range from Altos to Sopranos
I feel like bro would love chase atlantic
It's not a type of voice. It's voice technic
I wish I could sing like that
me doing research because my student thought he was a baritone but has the vocal range of a counter tenor 🥴
When a guy has higher voice than me if he was vocally trained he could easily be countertenor right? My speaking is in 3rd octave lol I find my voice kinda low compared to some girls 😥
Trina2126 maybe a Contralto? Or possibly a low mezzo
@@arxsyn mezzo i think i heard woman with deeper voices than mine and higher. I seem in between :/
Trina2126 I'm a Contralto. I've been called Sir once. Also been mistaken for my brother on the phone with relatives. Ha ha! Doesn't happen too often because l try to speak higher. Speaking too low and dark, my brother complains he can barely hear me (a remnant from vocal injury, trying to imitate higher voices)
Trina2126 I am lyric Leggero my second passagio at A4 my high full range extend to A5 low notes c3 comfortable and hardly B2 sometimes A2 and ı am 24 years old when I look my high range you could count me an Dramatic Mezzo or something but ıf you look low range you should count me contralto or something but ı can sing dramatic mezzo parts too in safety if ı trained myself my voice is especially in low parts so manly and speaking voice high as well but its also hearing manly
not necessarily. A countertenor needs to be comfortable using head voice . speaking voice is chest voice . Many countertenors have baritone speaking voice. if a guy sings tenor well he may not be motivated to relinquish his chest voice .
Bro...I'm really confused about my voice... Would you please tell my voice type..You can listen my covers on my channel..and 🙏 Please say bro... Sometime I feel like I'm a tenor and then suddenly I feel like I'm a mezzo...
Currently with a jaw injury frankly I can sing still with some set backs. My vocal range A#2-C6, I start from G3-G4. Belt F4-B5(D6) E3-E#4 is standard. C6-D7 are obtainable as well.
Time will tell when I lose count of how many people I make cry when I sing.
@[AP-STUDENT] Jomuel Belarmino I do write music but with my TMJ problems jaw swell up it car accident it sound less easy for me to sing. But always considered wanting to be an artist. With my autism is one thing. I believe it will be such a hard dream to make into reality. Yes of course I would consider.
My recommended me to do covers to get exposure. Hmmmm should do that no. I just don't know. I never had any singing lessons...like one day people will hear me.
“Highest note ever is C#8 and lowest note E1” I’m sorry but this is quite unlikely. E1 is a note lower than most Bass singers can sing (the lowest Fach, with the lowest tessitura), and even if so, you’re definitely not singing within the 6th, 7th, or 8th octave.
i can reach all these but with my falsetto too (B2-E6), does that make me countertenor?
it really depends on where your voice resonates the most and what feels the most comfortable for you
Cereal Before Bleach bro the Fact that you can hit an E6 makes me Jealous of you.
almost any man with intent and training can sing as counter tenors, by singing exclusively singing in their high registers (in men, this is called the falsetto register). In practice, classical counter Tenor singers are usually natural baritone or bass voices because they produce a reinforced falsetto that gives the impression of a full voice. I would say that male Tenors have this ability inherently, since they are the highest male voices
XDranzer000 Can i ask?
"men whith snip snip" 😂😂😂😂
oh, so that's what it is.
I’m here because I wanted to know what NCT Haechan’s voice range is 😂
Fabulous voice, but you could use a different micro for singing. What a charming guy.
You should see his videos from quite a few years ago in his comic alter-ego role singing some crazy coloratura Vivaldi (imitating Cecilia Bartoli).
Lyrics in countertenor high or low or medium
Im between a bass and a baritone. But i can sing like a countertenor using my head voice
Im A2-Fb5-Cb7 comfortable D3-Eb5-Gb6 whats that?
Plot twist: There isn't any voice type named "Countertenor", it's just a name given to a male who usually uses his falsetto......... (Yeah countertenor can be a baritone at core😅😅).......
Not sure bout that bud
Definitely a voice type, there are men who have developed their head voice and falsetto but it still lacks that feminine quality that's natural for a Countertenor plus they can't sustain singing in that high tessitura for so long.
@@GarageStudio7 I didn't get your point, sorry.......
@@GarageStudio7 that's true i am a contertenor and i feel the seem
It's a legitimate voice type. Just because you use falsetto doesn't mean that your comfortable doing it. And timbre counts too.
Sopranist
Mezzo-Sopranist
Altino
Contraltino
Tenorino
Haute Contre

Erik Karol from Cirque Du Soilel Dralion
My lowest is B2, my highest is F5 and if I do warm ups I can probably go higher. Am I countertenor?
No
Being a natural counter tenor is extremely rare, but you can train to become one. It's just about mastering the range. If you can go from B2 to F5 I would assume you're a tenor. Your voice is already pretty high so you can work on your head voice to access the counter tenor range.
Edit: wait you're a man right? 😅
@@魚-c3d my head voice is A2 - A5 and chest is B2 - D3 idk it’s weird lol
Hey classical Tenor who used to be obsessed with range as a Pop singer here. Don't focus on the extremes of your voice if you are untrained. Work with what you're comfy with the most.
Assuming you're a male, don't force your lows, so anything below C2 (my personal limit). As for your highs, the passagio can be as early as C sharp 4 (when I started singing I already cracked there). Treat your voice with care, be patient, and get a teacher who understands your voice.
My personal full range would be D2/E2-G5, but I probably don't even use half of that in my classical singing.
I'm a countertenor!
Why not show the range with a piano keyboard, much easier to appreciate?
What about a leggiero tenor?
Oh my gawd. I think I’m a countertenor. Shoot me.
Nope.
Watch Ahmin's video, Jimin is just a Leggero Tenor (possibly Contraltino) who strains a lot up there
@@tenor-haute-contre Definitely not a contraltino. Just a normal high tenor who employs a high larynx.
I'm here coz of NCT Haechan
Why are you not just called altos?
Can counterteners sing low ?
How low
Yes. A lot of them are also Baritones.
Is Kellin Quinn a countertenor?
I am a countertenor I sing c4-c7 I'm male
