    This video has been out for 8 years and I just bought my Helix yesterday (a couple promotions later). No regrets. It does more than I need it to and sounds better than anything I've owned. I couldn't be happier. Pete's demo made me drool over it and I just came back to hear him play through it again. Just reaffirms I didn't make a bad decision.

      I'm considering one myself...I have nice tube amps but find myself using Amplitude 5 most of the time. This would be a nice addition to use as my audio interface and have a bit more tactile control as well as being able to reamp and have external processing power.

People fight so much over tone (which is important.. duh), but the level of flex this has to be a straight to PA machine AND super flex to incorporate your fav pedals, amps and how you can marry them all as one. AWESOME !

    • @DerEchteBold
      @DerEchteBold 7 років тому +1

      690MBCOMMANDO
      I'm not much into Metal but to me it seems to be the other way round, even in my Boss GT-10 the clean and low gain sounds are pretty decent, sometimes even really good but everything high-gain is absolutely awful.
      With expensive units like AxeFx or Helix it may be a bit better but still not always great it seems.
      The more gain is used the worse the amp-models get in comparisons with real amps.

      yep. you just have to know how to dial them in. judging a unit by its factory presets is like forming an opinion based on reading only a headline and not the full story.

    • @TVoltG
      @TVoltG 7 років тому +4

      MeTuLHeD , I concur. These guys think they can truly tell the differences based on UA-cam. Lol. On my other channel, I have fooled so many thinking they are hearing real tube amps, which I own an old Mesa Dual 2channel Rectoverb, Bogner Ecstasy, Fender Twin, Splawn Quick Rod still. I unfortunately don't use them as much as my original Line 6 Vetta 1 stock no upgrades, still has the lawsuits names of the amps. The reason is at home, I can't crank the tube amps anymore. I love them but my Vetta has been so fine tuned by me, it sounds great, can rock and write at 3 am, and for some reason, sounds amazing. Most of my clips that have fooled people has been Vetta. Lol. Saying that, I am looking at finally blowing the dust out of my wallet to buy one of these Helix. I haven't bought anything new amp wise in quite a few but based on what I have heard recently live with one of these. I want one, Petes words also convinced me.

      @Bud Wiser well to be fair their older stuff like the spider didn't sound very good when compared to a tube amp. Add that to poor demos and 15 yesr olds trying to play metal out of them and the hate towards the brand just grew and grew. But they've knocked it out of the park now. You're fooling yourself if you don't think this thing sounds just as good as any tube amp on the market now.

  • @mmiddei1961
    @mmiddei1961 8 років тому +12

    Pete, thanks so much for all the outstanding demos you do...
    I just wanted to add some additional comments on Helix to what Pete has covered in this video.
    I'd been an all tube amp kind of guy the majority of my 35 yrs. playing guitar, primarily Marshall & Mesa Boogie products but last year bought a Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 36 Head and Cab which is much lighter to carry around. For the last 2 yrs. I've been looking for ways to lighten the load of gear I lug to practice and gigs but don't want to sacrifice tone to accomplish this, tried the HD500X a while back, then Boss GT100 but yuck no way, just didn't dig the tone at all compared to my tube amps. Then mid 2015 I was reading about Fractals AX8 and Line 6 Helix. Long story short, I bought the Helix December 1st, 2015 and absolutely think it's the best piece of gear to hit the market in my 35 yrs. playing guitar and chasing that perfect tone, especially at a $1499 price point. It was between the Fractal AX8 (I too was on their waiting list) and Helix, since Guitar Center gives 45 days to try purchases I figured there's nothing to lose trying Helix while on the waitlist for the AX8, if Helix sucked like previous stuff I've tried it would get returned immediately, same was the plan for the AX8 too.
    My friend John has had an Axe Fx ll for just over a yr. and loves it, but for me rack gear is again just too much to lug around at my age of 56 so the Axe Fx ll was out but AX8 looked promising and so did Helix. Shortly after I got Helix and set up some patches John & I did a side by side comparison of amp model tones, effects, ease of programming, etc., it was an all around thorough comparison on a Saturday afternoon of Helix and the Axe Fx ll. To both of our surprise actually, Helix performed outstanding, the tones and effects had my friend John saying WTF more than a few times throughout the afternoon of testing, now John wants a Helix too... he actually admitted that when I asked if we could get together to do a compare that he chuckled and thought "yeah like that things going to compare with my Axe Fx, not", and now he wants one, ya gotta love it.
    Here are some of the primary differences between Fractal products and Line 6 Helix:
    The Axe Fx ll and the AX8 provide deeper editing capability of amp models. If you're into switching in/out different transformers, tubes, and other tube amp components then Fractal may be a better fit for you. However, Helix does provide the most important tweaking items to their Preamp & Power Amp models, for sure everything I need to get outstanding guitar tones. Personally, I want to dial up great guitar tones as effortlessly as possible and spend the majority of my time playing my guitar, and writing & producing music, not tweaking amp models for hours on end, Helix does this incredibly well and quickly. Helix also shines far above Fractal when it comes to ease of programming patches and setting up the foot switches and expression pedals to control anything and everything you could possibly want, and it does this quickly without the need for a computer. You can edit on the PC or Mac if you want but it's not necessary even for complex patch setups, everything is available on the huge color screen with no menu diving. Additionally, Helix has a built in pro quality USB audio interface with 8 ins/outs for direct recording to a DAW similar to the Axe FX ll only, the AX8 doesn't have an audio interface.
    Here's another big difference between Helix and the AX8 which is a scaled down version of the Axe Fx ll and can only use 1 amp model at a time, Helix can do 4 amp models at one time if for some reason you wanted to do that. The reason is Helix combines the horsepower of their 2 DSP's rather than dedicating 1 to amp models and the other to effects. This gives users the options of using 1 amp model and a ton of effects, or perhaps 2 amp models, for a fatter sound, etc. I will say this much, I've yet to use up all the DSP horsepower in Helix and I've got some really complex patches with lots of effects. I've watched several AX8 tutorials and the guy is always maneuvering settings to keep from hitting the DSP's limits, I just haven't experienced this at all with Helix.
    Just in case anyone is wondering, no I'm not affiliated in any way with line 6 or any other company. My opinions are strictly as a gigging/recording rock & roll guitar player for many years who'd been searching for an all in 1 box kind of tool that provides great guitar tone and effects in a lightweight highly portable package and Helix is it...
    Hope this helps anyone who's on the fence with which direction to go, for me it was a no brainer after all the testing and comparing with the Axe Fx and all my own tube amps!

      @amphitheatre3 6 років тому

      Hey man, when you went from a tube amp to the helix did it feel different to you?
      I know when I transitioned from a bedroom solid state amp to a tube amp there was a massive difference in terms of how it felt.

    Hi Pete, I was curious if these tones are available for download? As well which ownhammer IR's specifically did you use for these as the library's that come with each response are immense. As well was there any post processing to the tones outside the helix that were hearing? I'm using helix and I'm
    Liking he option to use it as an entire rig. And I'm having trouble getting the kind of tones I want out of a PA. So I was wanting a good starting place to build from as these tones were some of the sounds I was looking to achieve with my helix. Thanks a bunch!

    Thanks for the great video, Pete. I noticed you had an Axe in your rack as well; any concise thoughts on comparisons between the two? I just got my rack model and foot controller, and grabbed a few of the Line 6 Mission pedals. I'm amazed how intuitive this thing is to use; coming from an Axe FX, which had a somewhat brutal learning curve (at least for me), I've only spent a few hours with this and was up and running, compared to the week I put in with the Fractal. So far, I have no complaints (minus possibly the lack of a Jubilee and VH4 amp sim; other than that it was well-worth the investment).

      +BakerImageGroup I would happily use it as another pedalboard with my amp, when I need something smaller! I will be experimenting with this...Maybe make a board with a few key pedals in the fx loops of the Helix.

What tips can you offer? What setup do I need at home to hear an accurate representation of what my sound will be like live? Anything will help. Thanks Pete 👍🏻

  • @C2ItMultimedia

    Wow, great tones and obviously fantastic playing and arranging! So as he demo'd each tone separately I thought each one was incredible. But then when he got to the tone that utilized the real amp with the load box you could just tell - there's still something lacking in the modeling. The real amp just had something that resonates better to my ears. Now in the context of a mix I don't think I could pick out which part was modeled or not, but just listening to each tone soloed there's some subtle difference.

    • @jameshamilton9390
      @jameshamilton9390 5 років тому

      That's where they really figured it out. For fly dates you can deal with the slight difference that you don't get with a real amp because you have a rock solid repeatable sound, you can used just the effects into a real amp, or you can use some of the effects and integrate your favorite pedals. I just played a show at the Whiskey and used my amp with the HX effects. Have to be honest there was other pedals on my board just so people didn't know that was all I was using. This is a great tool even if it's just for practice at home as you can put the song on through the Helix into your headphones and play along without needing recording equipment as extra. All my sounds are dialed in and I just use my amp with a load box so everything reacts like it does at the venue.

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  8 років тому +55

      I used an isolation transformer on the cable running from helix to the amp input, when I was running 4 cable method. This kept it perfectly quiet. When connecting any unit 4 cable, you have to do this or you'll get a ground loop. Essential. Use an ebtech hum eliminator (model HE2) or Palmer PLI01 for this. Tools every guitarist should have!

    • @8bigtubes
      @8bigtubes 8 років тому

      +Pete Thorn
      Hey Pete, would something like the Humbuster cables that Fractal recommends do the same job?

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  8 років тому +9

      +8bigtubes I'm not actually sure- the hum buster cables are designed to do the same thing, BUT it's possible Fractal uses some sort of TRS jacks on their units, meant to be used in conjunction with the hum buster cables. In other words those cables might not work with other units. I'd get the ebtech 2 channel hum eliminator and just use that- it's great to have around! Once again- you NEED this box or an equivalent with anything you run 4 cable. For instance - Strymon Mobius, you can run pre and post (in front of amp and in FX loop simultaneously) and you must lift the send going to the amp, or the send going to the FX return, or you absolutely will have a ground loop. My pedalboard is full of ISO transformers!!

    • @8bigtubes
      @8bigtubes 8 років тому +1

      +Pete Thorn Ok. Thanks for the advice. I already have the 8-channel Ebtech Hum Eliminator so if I do get the Helix and run it in 4CM, I'll use one channel between the Helix output and the input of my amp. Thanks again, Pete :)

    At high risk of getting blown off, I'm gonna ask the question so many of us want you to answer. Does this unit or does this unit not improve on Line 6's tone quality enough to compete with Kemper and Fractal? Are the tones that good or not? When I have the choice between shelling out the cash for this now or waiting a year for Fractal to catch up on the AX8 Wait List, the opinion of Pete Thorn will make a big difference. Not addressing this in the video as much as says that the Helix is not on par with Kemper and Fractal.

      +runningmayo He can't tell you stuff like that. He has relationships with many different companies, so that would be unwise. He'll always tell you when he likes something, but usually not a preference of one product over another. I've noticed this in the past, and it totally makes sense.

    • @runningmayo
      @runningmayo 8 років тому +4

      +Frank Ritchotte There's only so much you can hear on a compressed UA-cam video. But even so, it's telling that the modelled amps sounded great . . . until he lined in a Suhr amp. Those were the best sounds out of the nine.

    • @runningmayo
      @runningmayo 8 років тому +5

      +Larry Lachmann His business depends on his relationship with the OEMs, but it also depends on his reputation. If he can't express an honest opinion to the viewers, then his reviews are not worth more than the catchy tune at the beginning. As someone who is willing to shell out the cash for a high end product, I believe it's worth pressuring Pete to give an honest answer to this question. And I have heard him give honest comparisons on other products, express features that he wished they had, etc. If Pete is only willing to act as a corporate shill and put a product under shiny glass, then I have no use for his videos. I think he's better than that. We'll see if he answers. However, I do notice that the title reads 'demo' and not 'review' . . .

    • @musicmann1967
      @musicmann1967 8 років тому

      +runningmayo Yeah, he's really a demo guy. That's why I say what I do. To me it seems like he does the best, most comprehensive demos on UA-cam, putting the gear through it's paces, making really good recordings of songs. The he breaks down the parts and settings.. He leaves it for us to decide if somethings is of value to our own set of needs. I've turned off some videos that he's made after a minute when I realize that pedal or whatever isn't for me. You can tell when he's excited about a product, like in this video, but I don't remember him saying stuff like I like this amp more than that amp.

      still nothing like the real deal. digital has come a long way but not that far..lol line 6 is ok if you like crappy support with NO real upgrades since it came out except 2 matchless amps and a editor..lol I find the helix has that weird L6 sound just like all the other units they have come out with. It seems to have a cheesy flavor to it and I cant really put my finger on it.. I guess part of the issue is dsp they use. The axe fx xl+ uses 2 sharc dsp and just 1 of those is 50% faster than both dsp's that line 6 uses. is it worth 1k more? hell yeah. Line 6 has stepped up somewhat but then as they always do, stepped back since its launch, go figure??
