      another thing i would like to mention is that they could differentiate between france and germany (two tiny little european countries RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER my state itself is bigger than germany) and for sumeru they mixed so many things and doris whole design situation... then natlan too?? Yes i get that mond is also like that but it portrays germany quite accurately ( i have way too many german friends) then liyue of course its a chinese game, then inazuma is like japan but after all that?? Honestly thats not the problem tho i can deal with the amalgamation of cultures (when i was 4 i thought aladdin is indian but im indian and medium deep skinned-) but the skin thing is absolutely the worst considering colonialism and current beauty standards and the racist people-

    What's strange to me is that even Asian people come in many shades, including darker ones. So, the only thing that makes sense to me is colorism/racism. They have made and still make so much money for them to worry about not selling a character. It's a shame

      Hundred of years before the sinosphere(cultural sphere of japan, china, korea and indo-china countries) even interact with europeans or africans they already saw paler skin tones as more attractive and a beauty standart, that's why japanese geishas, for example, paint their faces with rice powder.
      Calling it racism or colorism, would be the equivalent of calling brazilians racist for putting tanner skin tones as our beauty standart, or any african countries by seeing darker skin tones as their beauty standart. It is just the way, how , diferent cultures arround the world created their own beauty standarts across thousands of years.

Chinese ppl aren’t even all on the lighter scale 😭 there are plenty of them who are on the darker scale of skin color. this is clearly colorism into play. generally, ppl with darker skin color get picked on and judged and looked down upon more than those with lighter complexions. this isn’t exclusive to just Asian countries though, even in Latino countries, colorism is a huge problem. no idea why u got so many negative comments., ur completely right. its 100% racism, i grew up in china so i would know, there's tons of racism pointed towards black people. hoyoverse has been making npcs darkskinned in both genshin and honkai star rail. but they rarely ever make them playable, most of the time they throw in a ''dark'' character on release just to have them there for the sake of inclusivity, in china there's many ads and posters that involve racism. from my experience. chinese teenagers/young adults. are not nearly as racist as the elderly, especially if they grew up in a bigger city. but many companies are very racist when it comes to marketing etc. i've seen movie posters in china where they would straight up remove the black person from the poster, or make them extremely small and barely recognizable, and this does NOT happen to any white/asian people. so yeah, racism.

    Is it racist? Yes, 100%. Sadly I think it comes down to it being a Chinese company. It's the same thing that happened with Star Wars years back when they removed the Black actor from the promotional material for Chinese posters. They want to use the culture for the region but remove Black/Brown people from it. A lot of Asian media gets criticized for this, even Kpop constantly gets dragged for appropriating from Black/Brown and gay people while simultaneously excluding them and being colorist.

They have tones of Indian characters and all of them are darker than any genshin characters. Same with black characters or other dark skinned asian. Even making some as main characters.

    I wouldn't say they're racist as they did a very good job on the cultural aspects and the enviroments and music, if they were racist, they wouldn't have gone out of their way to implement it in game in the most authentic way possible.
    When Sumeru first came out and most of the characters are white except for a few, I just didn't think much of it, I thought it was okay because they're in a rainforest (and desert) and was inspired by the Middle East (including India as well), not saying that there aren't darker skinned people in the regions too. So (I'm just assuming here, please correct me if I'm wrong) the community decided that while it was controversial to not have darker skinned characters in game, they mostly decided to look past it and let hoyo cook for natlan because that was the region inspired by Aztec, South America and Africa, so they waited, hoping that hoyo would take that chance to create more diverse characters in the region.
    After watching the trailer though, I was pretty okay with it until the community pointed out the problem with the skin tones of the characters, I was like Oh no, Twitter's gonna have a field day with this, and I was right, everyone was not happy about it. I am mostly neutral on this but I do understand the outrage over this and it is reasonably so, I have to agree that there should be more diverse characters in natlan more skin tones in variety, since Natlan is the Pyro nation and it's hot it's sunny and humid, quite similar to Sumeru (I digress). So I'm on the side of the community is totally on the right for this and you are right to bring this up along with the other creators.
    PS: Let's not bring Furina as a sxample for this, the poor girl has suffered enough already for 500 years, let her live in life in peace with her mac and cheese XDDD. Jokes inside, I agree with your points. Hopefully this will get fixed and will be water under the bridge

    The issue lies deep in Asian culture. In the past skin tone was a status symbol, from the emperors never seeing the sun and the workers always being under it, and the foundation of that belief system is still in play. Racist? No. They still put immense detail into the cultures they portray, they don't mock or stereotype. Colourist is more in line with it. They cherry pick aspects from the cultures, namely skin tones, in order to appeal to their main audience, which is Asia
    Hoyo actually has quite the history with this stuff. In Honkai Impact 3rd Carole was self conscious about her skin colour. Kaeya is described as "Suspicious" and Xinyan is described as "Scary" in game which is... y'know lmao. Since Inazuma it feels like the company has matured a little in their execution of things so at least all the desert dwellers (Cyno, Candace and Dehya) had a tad of melanin. But it did not go unnoticed how many enemies have considerably darker skin than the playable characters, especially now they're doing it again with Natlan
    I will say though, I immensely dislike the editing of characters to give them darker skin. Even when the artistic intention is flawed by our standards, I find it important that the artist's work is kept in the state it was intended to be in, and that we instead criticise the source, not mess around with the product. Can you imagine if a black character was released in Western media and it was whitewashed by the East because of 'culture'? There is a problem in Hoyo's cherry picking of parts of the world by our standards, but I feel there's a right way to go about it. If you disagree with this small line of argument then I'd be happy to talk in the replies of this comment
    That's my analysis of the whole situation

    I preregistered for genshin and played since release. I was always a MASSIVE fan of genshin and mihoyo (as my wallet is very aware). I was always aware that the characters were 99% white, but assumed that would change in Sumeru, and as an indian with islamic heritage an indian and MENA inspired region was so exciting too. But i remember watching the first sumeru preview live and being flashbanged by how white the characters were. It was soul crushing and i genuinely felt betrayed. Im used to not being that represented in media with most being bad representations, but to have it happen to me from a game and company i was so invested in made me straight up quit the game entirely.
    Even recently after finding out that a lot of indian culture was represented amazingly from food to music to culture and history; the fact that there was no one that i could point to and identify with other than the dendro archon who is a tiny child thats whiter than chalk has nade me realise i may never play genshin again without being reminded of that feeling of betrayal i felt (as dumb as it is to feel betrayed by a game).
    And then on top of that, seeing all the racists dismissing any criticism and always saying its just white women who care, just cemented that i will never return.
    Maybe mihoyos next game will bring me back tho idk, but HSR and ZZZ definitely didn't.

    BITCH I'M ETHNICALLY CHINESE AND YES GENSHIN IS STILL RACIST. Hoyo is obviously pandering to east asian beauty standards of lighter skins being pretty (plus xenophobia/racism against darker skin ppl like south asians, africans, latin america, oceana, etc) and making waifus. Their designs are amazing but it could be so much better if they just stop being racist.

It's just that I absolutely hate it when game studios can't just be accurate to the culture/history of the place they are supposed to be representing. I hate that there is a black MC in Assassin's Creed Japan. I hate that there is a black Angrboda in Norse GOW. And I equally hate that there are white characters in Sumeru & Natlan. When even the Chinese community of the game has questioned why there is the CULTURES of our Mexican, African, mesoamerican, Nigerian, hawaiin, and north American brothers and sisters but not their skin tones. So much so that even VA's of some genshin characters have come out to speak on the blatant disrespect and racism towards such cultures and representations. And ALSO, every TANNED ("darker") character's kits are downright horrendous.

"Ah the people in the forest are obviously paler cuz of the shade" bruh that is the dumbest excuse I've ever heard people spew. Then there was the desert with Cyno only looking dark cuz he was literally standing next to characters with #FFFFFF for a skin tone. And all the enemies having locs and darker tones but nope for player characters you can count them on one hand.
    And now Natlan. One of the characters is literally named after Olorun of the Yoruba religion. They effing massacred him 😭

    I think overall we should advocate for more characters of darker skin complexions rather than the demands I usually see for pre-existing characters to be darker because they "aren't black enough" for what people feel they are supposed to be representing, I do wish hoyoverse would communicate with it's community and listen to feedback but overall it feels wrong from both sides because as someone of mixed race and just other experiences I've witnessed happening to others some people are just lighter than people would stereotypcally thing would represent the ethnicity or race they are apart of while on the other hand supporting this game using lighter complexions when they base these nations as a whole off of real life cultures with a vast abundance of rich history is extremely concerning when they have so many resources they could use to create such a diverse cast like the nations and powers these bright colorful characters come with, unfortunately there probably isn't much hope if the future natlan characters are revealed and are lighter than the community would like but we still can cherish these characters and not dispise them for the designs their developers have given them while again advocating that they add future characters that can fit the mold that people are requesting for within the regions that they should be included or there may be a lack of.

Genshin has wonderful representations of culture but the fact that they're so scared of representing other skin colors in their playables seems unreasonsable in a game that takes from real life cultures. The worst part is that this game tries to tackle issues of racism and bigotry (see Melusines and Eremites vs Rainforest Sumerians, though the Eremites vs Rainforest one is half racism and half elitism). Warning essay
    I feel like this is a pretty big discussion that often gets misconstrued on either side, but I do want to make a few things clear before I dive in. One and most importantly there should be more skin variety in the game period, debating that is such a dumb thing to do, gacha’s thrive off of character diversity there's no reason why Genshin shouldn't be doing what every other gacha has been doing when it comes to this aspect. Two I can understand why the opposing side can be at times vitriolic because before someone like kudu came along who gave a very reasonable and imo good take on this subject, there was x twitter person coming along black washing characters like Nahida and Dori to name a few.
    While I disagree with the direction Hoyo has taken with said character design in certain aspects that does not excuse blackwashing characters. it is extremely fucking cringe and depending on your motives, i would argue as someone who is black is just another form of racism. IMHO no matter what views we all have on this subject the above talking points/sentiments and or beliefs shouldn't be in the convo.
    side note i would argue the hex code argument is a slippery slope, growing up in the hood similar questions or assumptions based on my friends skin or the way that they would talk, often led to other black people calling them “whitewashed” or “not black enough” i understand your intentions but i think it's important to be very careful using that argument due to what some people can internalized from it. (not blaming you just sharing my pov about that)

    With that out of the way, is this racism/colorism personally i don't think it is, i do however think there's a mixture of problems that come together and culminate to make it feel that it is, said problems include but are not limited to.
    #1 a divisive community that hates change.
    (See Im theater, Zhongli fiasco and abyss difficulty as everything that ends up being discussed with this community including this topic ends up being controversial.)
    #2 Lighting and brightness that makes the already lacking disparities between characters more prominent. (character design as a whole looks a lot better with the gamma all the way down)
    #3 Concern for not only the CCP but potential crazy fans in the community.
    (The president of Hoyo almost got assassinated over a fucking swimsuit skin.)
    #4 the poor reception with character kits for said melanated characters. With this particular point I want to make this abundantly clear, the issues with these characters often just stem from incompetence or character balancing not race.
    (Starting off, Dehya's kit isn't bad it's just her numbers, for Xinyan her element just doesn't do her justice for her kit and tbf Hoyo barely knew what they were doing making units at the time. Sethos is good, Cyno is good, Kaeya is good, but freeze doesn't work nowadays, and melt is limited, Candace(c6) is good her problem is there's no point of using her unless it's for a niche team like Arle vape because hydro app is covered by like 6 other characters for every scenario.)
    I will agree that this particular issue sucks because even if the characters aren't bad, the fact that there's very little use cases for them (nowadays due to so many options) and they are darker skinned feels like the devs are doing this on purpose. When it's probably in actuality just laziness impeding these designs as this happens a lot with the four stars and the five stars depending on where we are in the region's patch. (looking at you Kaveh and Chirori) Chiori is good, please don't mistake my criticism of her design as her being a bad unit because she is far from that.
    When it comes to Sumeru I did feel although, we didn't get as appropriate representation with the playable cast. The nation of Sumeru was very well done in terms of cultural aspects and religion-based practices/stories (as seen with the cycle of samsara) and with that in mind I think people are jumping the gun a bit too early with Natlan since, there is a lot that has been purposely left out in the trailer but that's just speculation and all we can do is wait and see.
    Huge write up aside congrats on the algorithm hitting your video kudu and I hope my views on this situation probably gave you some food for thought or a new take away and even if it didn't, I wish you and everyone else who kept this a respectable discussion a good one, take care peeps👍🏿.

    Genshit infacts lighting engine is complete dogsrit. You cant rely on hex codes AT ALL until patch comes out. Kaeya and Xinyan are ONLY 2 with the darkest skin color from ALL the playable characters. Starting from green lantern region EVERY "darker" skin character got a lighter color compared to Kaeya and Xinyan. That includes Electric 5*. I call it Lois Griffin color. In some lighting its brown ONLY at night, fully white during the day. It's horrible. Its funny, when actual white skin characters, in this horrible lighting engine, can hit almost perfect FFFFFF on the hex code. Purest white. It's tragic. These new characters AT BEST, probably Dehya/Lois Griffin/every 3.0 region playable character color. At worst dude could be actually white, not sure about geo child.

    Racist nah, but they do seem to have preference when it comes to skin tone. We are jumping to fast into the gutter here, they have barely shown the Natlan, so reserve our judgement when they actually make a statement or act that is in deed racist. At least question them first, before making a bold claim such as them being racist.

  • @Monkey_D_Luffy56
    @Monkey_D_Luffy56 6 місяців тому +2

    Racist? They have worked hard to explore and showcase different cultures, if you don't see any black characters it doesn't mean they are racist
    If you don't see any characters on Natlan that have dark complexion you can say that the game is racist
    Japan closed it's borders around year 1500-1800 like the story in Inazuma and black slavery took place on the same time, putting black on the game would suddenly make the game racist because people will think blacks are slaves
    Liyue and Inazuma characters have huge eyes, is it racism??? NO, it's all about color right? Every media needs to include " BLACKS " because if not, they are definitely racist
    Making Dr.Who, Albert Wesker, Cleopatra, Etc BLACK ARE FAR MORE RACIST THAN A GAME,MOVIE ETC THAT DOESN'T INCLUDE THEM

    • @leesa._.
      @leesa._. 6 місяців тому +11

      I think the issue stems from Hoyo wanting to represent a culture without the actual population.. Not sure where the leap in logic came from regarding slaves though. Inazuma is inspired by Japan, not repeating historical events 😐

    • @ItzKudu
      @ItzKudu  6 місяців тому +9

      So many things wrong with this statement. First off, the game DOES NOT take place in 1500's-1800's. This is a made-up fictional world and Inzuma does not share the same story as what happened in he 1500-1800's. Raiden literally closes the nations borders because of her own ignorance and the fear that the nation would get destroyed in war.
      Second off, all the characters in Genshin share similar eyes. Liyue and Inazuma does not purposefully make their unit's eyes bigger lmao.
      Who hurt you? Also doesn't One Piece feature a BUNCH of dark skinned people?

    • @MikeWorks2
      @MikeWorks2 6 місяців тому +5

      Ahh yes... a fictional, open-world, action role-playing game adding a person of a darker skin toned character (who doesn't even really have to be black) is going to make the game racist.... I'm ngl the fact that'd Kudu mostly talked about Hispanic people in the video, and you just somehow brought in why black people shouldn't be in the game, is beyond me. Also youre acting like the Black community went out of their way to ask for someone black to play as Dr. Who, Albert Wesker or Cleopatra. Idk tho im just a "BLACK" that doesn't play genshin.

    • @Monkey_D_Luffy56
      @Monkey_D_Luffy56 6 місяців тому

      @@ItzKudu I know that Inazuma is a fictional world but given the real world context, it will suddenly become racist if you suddenly include dark skin below 5.0 and if you don't get it I'm not gonna argue with you because all you see is skin color
      No one hurts me it's just I'm tired of this woke bullshit, I don't see color until someone claims everything is racist and it slowly makes me racist towards that group of people and yes One Piece includes a bunch of dark skin characters but blacks in the real world are represented by fishman on that fictional pirate story.
      Fishman being a stronger than average person, dark past then some become racist themselves because of their past while other are trying to move on and make things better is an accurate representation of black community
      Again I'm not gonna argue after this since it's clear that you only see color and nothing else
      Keep up the great video because you will succeed on your goal, you don't know it yet but this kind of content is one of the reasons people are slowly becoming racist deep inside but don't worry they don't usually show it outside even your friends if you have one
      One day you will succeed in bringing a new generations of racist
