Hey there, my name is Alex Fortey, the founder of The Art of Simple Golf and in this video I'm going to show you a weird trick that Nick Faldo uses to hit the ball straighter. Some people might think it's strange, but it actually works really well. So if you're looking for a way to improve your golf game, stick around and I'll show you what he does for perfect golf swing tempo.
There is something destroying your golf swing, and I wager you haven't even considered it. You've been chasing all the technical solutions for your golf swing, getting frustrated. But if you overlook this one thing, you are gonna stay frustrated and stay inconsistent. I am talking about tempo, but don't think it's boring because if your tempo is quick or if it is snatching, your shots are gonna be so much worse.
The reason I know that you are overlooking tempo is because of the thousands of golfers I've helped across the world really ever pay attention to tempo. And it doesn't mean to swing slow, it doesn't mean to swing soft, but that is the starting point. Find your tempo and I promise you your game will skyrocket. Who do we admire? Ernie Els, Fred Couples, people like this. VJ Singh, smooth swings that look like you can just do them for days without worry, but they still deliver power.
Tempo in your golf swing a key that most golfers overlook... it's a secret weapon for more power and golf swing speed as well as reliable consistency. It should be a foundation of your game to make sure it's as ideal for you and to maintain it. With every shot from irons to driver. Swinging Slower To Hit The Ball Farther
Have you ever been in a situation on the golf course where you hit the ball short distances AND it just goes to the right or left? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, most amateur golfers have trouble hitting the ball straight let alone longer and straighter. And here we are about swing slower to hit the golf ball farther. However, there is a tip from Nick Faldo that can help you overcome this problem - and it’s a bit weird and he calls it Powder puff or power puff.

Faldo said "powder puff", not "power puff". A powder puff is a fluffy ball that women used to use to apply face powder. The term became synonymous with doing something very gently.
yep agreed the term was powderpuff
Yes I knew and know it… like a Wally I got myself confused and only noticed edit lol 🤦🏻♂️
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf you are forgiven
Yesterday I proved to myself that your concept really works. The three holes I put maximm effort into were all disasters that lost the match for me. With 80% swing effort I was hitting fairways, getting close to greens and holding my own against a guy with a handicap 10 strokes better and 25 years younger than me. As soon as I tried to match his distance with more effort in my swing, my game went pear shaped and I lost those three holes. Back to 80% swing for the last few holes and all was well with the golf, but three holes of agressive effort lost me the match.
Well thank you for sharing that. I’m sad to hear you lost but delighted you can see where it went wrong and why. Learn, stay to principles that work for you! 🏌️♂️👍💪
Best teacher on you tube , short videos ,right to the point....
Much appreciated thank you! 💪🏌️♂️
This helps me with tempo-
I take a practice swing by swinging the Club forward about a foot, and then completing my full backswing.
When I take my real shot, I ‘imagine’ that same feeling of the Club going forward a foot in front of the ball and then returning (before I actually begin the swing).
That’s my go move before many shots
Wonderful tips!
It’s amazing how often one tries to lay up on a shot with water in front of you and then the shot goes absolutely supremely well straight into the water! Indeed sometimes you even wonder as you’re just about to hit the shot as clean as possible just before swinging and maybe this could go into the water. Alternatively I’m pretty sure some of the biggest drives that I’ve ever made of all come from absolutely nowhere and I wasn’t looking for a big hit I just absolutely hit it out of the middle and with the correct tempo. Another great video that gives us plenty to think about. Well done ❤
It has happened to me but I couldn't do it again because I didn't know what I did to get such a result in the first place!
Wonderful insights and spot on indeed! Thank you and let me know if this helps you out there 💪🏌️♂️
Starting with the drills in the lesson is a solid start :) 💪🏌️♂️
Your golf swing is one of the best I’ve ever seen. I wish I had your swing. Great content as always Alex.
You need to play with more people lol :) I do appreciate that too. I do my best to always practice what I preach. 🏌️♂️💪
Alex,outstanding video.
Definitely plan on giving this a try!
Excellent and hope it helped
I think Faldo did that because he had more time to sequence his moves when swinging really slowly. You are right to say this as tempo is everything. This is the most crucial thing in golf. Well said my man!
Yes that’s the goal! 💪🏌️♂️
Love this. Can't wait to try it.
Hope it went well Kevin🏌️♂️⛳️
Superb, tip....thank you Sir
More than welcome!
Great, thanks a lot. I wish I saw this video when I started
Glad it was helpful!
Simply one of the best swings of all time ⛳️⛳️👍👍👍
It’s a good un:)
Great advice!!!
Thanks 🏌️♂️👍
This is so true, getting too fast and arms take over as your trying to hit the ball, slower tempo for me means legs/hips get through and I finish balanced and through the ball
Exactly
Perfect video for me right now!!
Glad to hear that! Hope it helps
Spooky timing. I went to the range this week to work on driver. I chose a 7i to warm up and just hit some fairly gentle 'fluid' swings to get my body working. These shots were some of the best iron shots I had hit in a while, carried the same sort of distance as when I get after it!!
That’s super to hear! Well done for giving it it a test and hope you keep it as a constant to dial yourself in
Great tips
Thanks and hope it helps your golf swing tempo :)
Great tips, range tomorrow to try
How’s it going 🏌️♂️💪
Was mir so gut gefällt an Deinem Training, das Du empfiehlst, jeder muss selbst für sich rausfinden, was an Deinen Vorschlägen passend ist für sich, bravp
Thank you very much! Yes I can guide you. Knowing if it’s correct and feels good for you is key.
Sometimes changes feel strange but they should still make sense
Thanks Alex, I found that mine is about 8 or 9, and the ball flight and direction is much better and more predictable
Great! I’d suggest get better at 8
I was told to begin the range warmup with a soft 7-iron and work from there. That seems to work (when I practice).
That's solid
I cannot believe you are using a Ben Hogan driver! I NEVER see any youtube videos with instructors using that brand! Kind of refreshing to see. 😁
They were great clubs especially irons. Driver was ok. I’m #PXG now and they are spectacular!
Nick Faldos 2 VHS videos were my teacher. Shame they never made it DVD as the contents are as true today as the yever were. Most of my practice is based around 7 iron feet together and a slow swing and timing. It's surprising how far it goes with so little effort.
Take your 7 iron swing to your driver not your driver swing to your 7 iron.
That’s true! Well said indeed 🏌️♂️
I have a very fast tempo, and I find that when I start getting inconsistent, I slow down for a few balls, then dial it back up when I return to the right feel. I guess this explains exactly that.
This video tally changed my game and consistency .
Delighted to hear that! 💪🏌🏽
How will this work with the Body Turn motion ?
In harmony. It’s your pace and smoothness not specific mechanics
I tried this yesterday on the course. Had some of my best shots with clubs that usually give me a fit (6i, 3w). Unfortunately I couldn't chip or putt to save my life.
Well I’m glad the long game was feeling good and working. Golf can be challenging as there are many facets. Enjoy the positives.
NciK Fadlo was my favorite gofler.
He was epic
I used to watch Fred Couples swinging and I watched the speed of his arms or body, NOT the golf club. It amazed me how slowly he was actually moving. The club obviously went very fast because the ball was going very far, but he was doing it with "slow" instead of fast.
His release of the club was incredible.
Well said 👍
Yep.. it’s more enjoyable to try and swing more that way. Smooth
Nice
excellent Tempo improves consistancy
Exactly
It is amazing how far I can hit the ball by swinging easy. Unfortunately the hardest thing in golf for me is to swing easy when confronted by a lake into the wind!
.
Yes exactly! Sequence and strike is much more important that swing speed
What grips do you use on your clubs?
Oversized with no taper :)
I have to practice this a lot! I find it really difficult to swing easy. My body loads up and always wants to unwind as fast as possible.
Smooth not slow, get the strike, then unwind:)
3:21 I didn’t realize I was gonna be asked to set a new PR
🏌️♂️👍
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf not sure if it came across correctly as a joke haha we really need a sarcasm font
This is likely close to what Faldo was talking about & I've seen the tip elsewhere. It's called the 2/3 drill. Just as a general idea, take whatever club you use for 150 yds and try to hit it 100 with a full swing. Just as your normal full swing, not slower or shorter & you'll be amazed by how it smoothes your tempo relativity quickly. It's not easy to do as you might find although it sounds simple.
Yeh spot on ! Thanks for sharing your experience with it 👍🏌️♂️
I didn’t know Rosie got a beard !😀😀😀😀 he even sounds like him!🤷🏼♂️🏌🏼♂️⛳️
🤷🏻♂️🏌️♂️
Honestly, to me I feel like I need to swing 90% for my best shots….if I go any slower….the ball will hook and I am a fade player. It took me years to learn to hit a nice draw and I abandoned it shortly after. I can’t stand the sight of a ball curving left….maybe just slightly. I think that’s why I like to swing a bit faster
It’s fine to feel that. The idea is to get your 90% performance feeling like 80%. Smoother and always some in the tank
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf I get it….so that when I do amp up it is as controlled as my current 90%….ahhh I see….thanks so much!
Hit the sweet spot.
Hopefully:) 🏌️♂️👍💪
Did you have slightly closed stance?
Not usually. Maybe just camera angle or error in my talking, teaching and swinging
go to a pro tournament
use a iphone metronome
measure the tempo
I noticed that just about all the golfers hit ALL the clubs with 72 bpm tempo
Anyone find something different when they measure pro tempo?
Balance does wonders
That’s neat and sounds spot on 👍
yes, it's a great drill. i use are airflow balls to warm up with. and, airflow balls don't go any further when you hit them hard. but, activate the muscle in the left side of the right forearm at the top and you will swing with tempo. in his book, tommy armour told us that the swing was 1 2 and 3. the "and" being a pause at the top. and, when you activate the muscle in the left side of the right forearm it does effect a pause- and, set the downswing into motion when you fully activate the muscle. it's probably best to swing with just your right arm- no club- to get a feel for this.
Great way to practice for sure! Thanks for sharing and perhaps I need to go and check out that book :)
I try and imagine I’m hitting a cotton wool ball when I get fast or stressed , perfect practice swings can get terrifying over the ball , so just hit cotton wool cleanly off the ground .
I never realised Faldo did it
That is great well done!! I’ve heard of that one before and tried it. Liked it! Thanks for sharing with others to see another way to imagine and react too!
Great lesson. Basically I will do this with extra club. For instance I’ll use a 7 iron with an easier swing instead of an 8.
With the driver a friend told me, take two practice swings then step up and hit the ball with your third practice swing.
It worked well, got my out of a bad rut off the tee.
@@bobt4949 love this - great tip
“It’s a full golf swing……
But smooth”
👍🏌️♂️💪
I promise you i am not overlooking tempo…I think about it a lot. It’s just hard to do.
It’s ok… it’s something we always need to dial back in:) 🏌️♂️👍
I think Bryson is doing this too. Yep, just checked the swing speeds and all the tour pros are swinging easier and slower these days. They are also cashing more checks by swinging easier and not working out to get more powerful since all power and distance is from "effortless" swinging. Yes, folks, the laws of physics (Newton didn't know golf was different) has been changed in golf as F=m x a has been debunked. So there is your "weird" tip.
The majority of this audience are not Bryson, long drive or tour players ages or level.
Swing sequence improves… contact improves …. Distances improve. And that’s easier for most folks than trying to get more speed without those two being decent.
Powder Puff...swing all your clubs as if its a 3/4 wedge shot.. you ll drop 8 shota a round instantly
Solid tip
It's so hard to swing slowly.
Smooth not slow is key
Charles Barkley?😂
🏌️♂️👍
I am getting older and my game is dying😀
We have plenty of things to help
Faldo didn’t hit it far, so I’m confused.
He hit it far enough and could always do more but he knew how to win with his distances and accuracy.
Point being more people hit it further with better strike and sequence rather than going for speed
Min 2... no. Except for couples, they are all quite tall.
Fred gets his power from his release, but most modern pros get it from loading up the club shaft bend at the top.
You are teaching yesterdays swing.
You are wrong.
Well this is what works for most of my students and most golfers. Better quality strike and sequence means more distance and accuracy without forcing it as you get older
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf the only way to be able to play this game as you get older is...... daily stretching and flexibility drills.
Like any sport, as you get older, you have to do more personal upkeep to play.
No "swing drills".... love the new release ball swing trainer.
No shortcuts to 10khr....
Justin rose looks weird with a beard😁
Or does Alex look weird without one…
Why does this deer feeding trough have comments about golf?
🤷🏻♂️🏌🏽👍
Who is Fadlo?
FADLO ? Who’s he😅
😁😁🏌️♂️
Based on his swing analysis of pga players and how he was a bigger player for his time and guys were routinely out driving him I’d say I wouldn’t listen to faldos advice on distance
It’s not about distance it’s about better strikes. And he could hit it further if he wanted to. But his game was dialed in to his yards
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf oh I was under the impression it was a weird tip to hit the ball further and how exactly do you know he could hit the ball further? The point is his swing didn’t allow him to hit the ball as far with accuracy
You don't hit "further"... you hit it "farther". Uggh
Powder on the back swing, puff on the down swing, that's the tempo.
Perfect! 🏌️♂️👍👍👍💪
