Yes you would depend on your classification. Depending on your skill level. Your best bet would be to first find a state to move to, then contact a IBEW outside local. You would want to join a the union. They will test you in if you are a journeyman lineman. Those years of experience could count as your apprenticeship. Definitely wouldn’t hurt. Also I would call up neat to see what is going on. I would definitely get your groundman ticket. You can chase storms with that.
Yes. It’s extremely important you get your CDL first. These apprenticeship’s won’t accept you without because there are too many that already have it. It’s also helpful that you apply to line-school/line college. That will give you an advantage over someone who didn’t.
What happens if I start an apprenticeship in one region Cal/Nev for example but then have to or want to move elsewhere; would I have to start my time over?
You wouldn’t get moved out of your jurisdiction. They can keep you in a different state though if there’s no work. As an apprentice you have no say so. When you top out you can do as you please. 🫶🏻🫡

@@redgeallen8867 yes. You have to apply based on where you live. Some apprenticeships are busier than others, meaning there may be a waiting period. You can work as a Groundman for the ibew while waiting to get into the apprenticeship.
You left out the word "Nepotism" from your presentation. Don't tell me that it's not needed, I experienced it. I tried back in the 1980's and 1990's and all I got was the middle finger. Yea. Get your CDL then if you can afford a linemen college I suggest that to as well. I would go to a local ibew also and apply as a Groundman to get your feet wet.
Thank you for sharing. I am here from the viral tiktok of women needed/wanted in the blue collar field. I am trying to do what I can to learn all that I can because it seems like being in the trades is the best move for anyone that has a brain that works! lol
That is correct. It is definitely a very demanding and rewarding career. It isn’t easy, but if you’re willing to put in the hard work and determination dedication, you will succeed at it. Keep me posted on your journey.
What was your age when you started the apprenticeship?
I was 29.
Hey man I interviewed with neat 10 months ago haven’t heard anything, I have my class A… tried to get into a shit ton of utility apprenticeships but turned away from alll of them because I don’t have experience and can’t afford lineschool. I’m old, 28. Can’t afford to take 4 months off work but I’d quit my shitty job right away if I had the chance to get into the union.. Should I try to get in as a groundman for the 104? I’m in Vermont
Definitely wouldn’t hurt. Also I would call up neat to see what is going on. I would definitely get your groundman ticket. You can chase storms with that.
@@magicman_metal_fab bro thanks for the advice, I just got back from my first storm as a groundman… made 9 fucking grand!!!
Wait, every lineman makes double with overtime??? 😮😮😮 or is it just in some unions???
Depends on the jurisdiction, state. Storm restoration is typically all double time.
I have my cdl, currently work on a drilling rig. Should I go too lineman school before the apprenticeship ibew program?
It can’t hurt. It will get your feet wet about the industry.
Magic , I’m 18 fresh out of high school I need some help , so I should get my cdl then apply for union ?
Would a marijuana related felony from 2012 prevent me from getting into this trade? I've been 100% sober since 2012.
Honestly that I couldn’t answer. It definitely doesn’t hurt to try.
Also just an fyi. You can have felony convictions removed off your record. 👋🏻 😊
Can you explain what the full package means please?
It would consist of medical and dental benefits, retirement, health reimbursement account.
Hey man I’m 18 getting my cdl in a month I wanna get this started asap and get on as a ground man. Will I have a shot with just a CDL and also do u recommend any locals I can sign online? I’m taking any opportunity I get.
Absolutely you will have a shot.
Hey man, Turned 18 about 2 weeks ago and I wanted to ask. How did you get your CDL
Union strong !!!!
🤘😊🤙🏻
Was there a long waiting list for NEAT?
Not when I got in 2004. Now absolutely. It’s extremely difficult for someone to get in.
@@magicman_metal_fab sheesh, i’m still going to give it a try. I have my CDL A
I’m in PA
@@PeezyFBG I would. It’s definitely going to change your life in a positive way once you complete your apprenticeship.
Hello Sir I’m 34 years old will be 35 In December I am fit and have been driving commercial trucks past 10 years. I am too old to get into this trade and work until I retire? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Absolutely not that is a perfect age. What state do you live in? You would apply to to the appropriate apprenticeship in your jurisdiction.
California sir , and thank you for response means a lot. Northwest lineman college is 10 minutes away from my house. Do you recommend me paying the course then look for a job?
@@Dav-to2pm a lineman college isn’t necessary, but extremely helpful when you get your foot in the door with the apprenticeship. Depending on where in California, you live, whether it’s southern or northern, you can go to the union hall and sign up to become a Groundman. The apprenticeship has a little bit of a waiting period. I’m sure to get into so between a lineman college and going to the union Hall. It will really get your foot in the door. Hope this helps. Keep me posted.
I’m In Northern California north of Sacramento. Thank you once again all this information is very valuable I will go to union hall sign up as groundman . I can be patient as long as I get in someday, I just thought maybe I was old to start new career.
@@Dav-to2pm you’re going to want to go to IBEW LOCAL 1245.🫶🏻🫡
Should I do union if I live in South Georgia
I would try 💯to. If not at some point in your career make that switch
❤
I am doing this.
Keep me posted bud
@@magicman_metal_fab Will do!
@@magicman_metal_fabGoing to lineman school next semester and then applying thru ALBAT 👌👍
Do substation techs make more or lineman?
No but it’s close. It’s a good job regardless
At what age did you start bro ?
I started at 30 only because that’s when I learned about it. Otherwise I would have started sooner.
How old were you when you started your apprenticeship?
I was 30 years old. I was Asplundh’s diesel mechanic in Long Island. It was right in front of my face and i still didn’t know about it. That’s why I made the video to help others see what is out there. 😊🤙🏻
@@magicman_metal_fab I'm 30 years old right now. I'm thinking about applying. I have been an OTR truck driver for the last year so I have my class A CDL. If I am able to move anywhere for work, would it make sense for me to apply for all of the unions? Do they check the address on your license and automatically disqualify you if you live in a different region?
@@redgeallen8867 yes. You have to apply based on where you live. Some apprenticeships are busier than others, meaning there may be a waiting period. You can work as a Groundman for the ibew while waiting to get into the apprenticeship.
What apprenticeships regions are slower?
You left out the word "Nepotism" from your presentation. Don't tell me that it's not needed, I experienced it. I tried back in the 1980's and 1990's and all I got was the middle finger. Showed up with class "B" CDL and climbed for CATV, still not good enough for ground man or entry level anything. Signed book 3 too. I'm referring to Local-1 and 2 here in St. Louis, Missouri. You don't go down there, unless you already know the results before you get there. As far as climbing schools, trade schools, junior colleges are concerned, they don't care who your daddy is.
Honestly bud i don’t even know how to respond to this comment. However things were extremely different back in the day. I started in 2004 and for me it was hard to get into the apprenticeship. I can’t imagine when you tried. Yes I’m sure there was favoritism going on big time back then. 🫡🤙🏻
I joined NEAT
Hey wanted to ask your advice on something, is a pending dui a deal breaker for this career field? Or is there still some hope, I have a cdl haven’t seen to many videos related to what I’m asking. What advice or experience would you have on this question? Thanks
You will 💯 need a CDL. I’m not sure how it works but maybe you can hire an attorney to help. If you were already a Journeyman and lost your license it’s not so bad. Starting an apprenticeship without it will never happen. Hope this is helpful.
Do apprentices stay employed year round?
Yes. If an apprentice was laid off. The apprenticeship will find work. It may be in a different state.
@@magicman_metal_fab thank you brother!
If you live in a southern state u will make half as much
Correct. Southern states are basically right to work. More non union than union. Once you get your journeyman ticket you can travel anywhere you want.
What company you with bro
Service electric
@Magicman metal fab I'm with north houston pole line .

What about being a convicted felon?
Honestly that’s a good question. 🤷♂️ don’t say anything.
How heavy is math involved in your day to day at work? What kinds of math should I touch up on?
Nothing bud. Lol. It’s only used for the aptitude test.
