“FINDING THE STORY” - ICP documentary photography workshop - What I’ve Been Working On

- In this video we’ll look at the sequence I’ve made for the “Finding the Story” documentary photography workshop I’ve been taking through the ICP (International Center for Photography).
I’ll explain the reasoning behind the photos I’ve selected, and why I put them in a certain order.

Really interesting, you never realise how much work a photographer (or any artist) puts into sequencing their work until you hear it from them. Would love to see the process and how the series evolved from there
Thanks Aliya! It’s still a work in progress, but next week I’ll show you the methodology used by this instructor to (re) sequence this - he had a very different approach from what I had done before with Alex and Rebecca!
i like your concepts. i'd like to see some of those images cropped, to make some of your concepts stronger for the viewer. like a colorful painting that has all the same color values, most of the photos are taken from the same distance. also, if you're going to include random people in your photos, try to find people that stand out, maybe with a striking colored item of clothing or an interesting look (a very old person or group of children) -- those pageant girls are fantastic. i love your high contrast vertical photo of the heads but i wouldn't place it where it is in this line up. i'd place the quarry photo with the blue sky, in its place. i'd keep the woman in the headdress next to the vertical photo for obvious reasons. also, be aware that in this line up, all but that high contrast image are horizontal, which makes it seem like it doesn't belong even though it's your strongest image.
again, i like your concepts but you need to make them more obvious for the viewer. it's obvious to you what you're trying to say because it's in your head, but you need to guide the viewer more. a last example would be: in the last photo you say you're bringing us back to the architecture but your photo strongly features the band & the architecture is in the shadowy background.
keep putting in the work, that's what matters.

WOW! You really took the time, thank you so much for that detailed feedback! It’s a really interesting point about that one shot being the only vertical. I hope you’ll check in next week too, I’m going to show what we ended up with after presenting this to Stephen, who promptly changed it completely (and for the better). Curious what you’ll think about the new sequence!
