Responding to YOUR advice on making a better photo sequence!
Переглядів 72Місяць тому
I got some AMAZING comments from some of you on my last video, so this week I'll be responding to YOUR advice on making a better photo sequence! Specifically we'll unpack a couple of really detailed comments point by point and look at what it means for the sequence I'm working on, and I'll talk about how I might adjust course based on your constructive criticism.
SEQUENCING a photo project - with the help of a PRO
Переглядів 93Місяць тому
In this video we'll be sequencing the photos from my Arequipa project, using what I Iearned from PRO photographer Stephen Ferry during a recent workshop. At the end I will RUTHLESSLY edit the sequence again, leaving only the strongest images and challenging myself to replace the cuts with better work. In this video I'll demonstrate how to choose your best photos using a technique I learned from a pro photographer. The technique in question comes from a workshop I took through the International Center of Photography with Stephen Ferry, who has worked for the likes of National Geographic, Time Magazine, the New York Times and has several books to his credit. In this video we’ll look at the sequence I’ve made for the “Finding the Story” documentary photography workshop I’ve been taking through the ICP (International Center for Photography). I’ll explain the reasoning behind the photos I’ve selected, and why I put them in a certain order. Would you have done it differently? Let me know in the comments!
I took a workshop with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb pt 2 - (top 4 takeaways)
Переглядів 7662 місяці тому
In this video I'll talk about my top 4 takeaways from the "Finding Your Vision" workshop with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb. We'll look at a few examples, but mostly it'll just be me talking for 16 loooooong minutes about editing and sequencing and stuff like that. To the thumbnail police: I'm trying 3 different ones OK? Please don't get your knickers in a twist.
I took a workshop with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb pt 1 - (my photos)

In fall of 2023 I took the "Finding Your Vision" workshop with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb in Saint Malo, France. In this video we'll look at my work from the workshop, and talk about how I edited and sequenced it with feedback from Alex and Rebecca. I'll even tell you how I cheated (it's underwhelming). Apologies for the jumpy autofocus, I experimented with a different setup this time.
BRUTALLY HONEST photo critique from a MAJOR magazine editor (portfolio review)
Переглядів 2893 місяці тому
In this video I'll share a story about the brutally honest photo critique I got from a senior photo editor of a MAJOR magazine during the Palm Springs Photo Festival in 2022. We'll look at the same set of images I shared with her, and I'll talk about what steps I am taking to follow her advice.
Bogotá Street Photography on T-MAX - REACTION to seeing my photos for the first time
Переглядів 893 місяці тому
In this video I will react to seeing my Bogotá street photography from a roll of Kodak T-Max black and white film for the first time. We'll look at prints from the whole roll, talk about some of them, make some selections, and look at some interesting pairings. Would you make different selections? How does this roll of T-Max compare to the previous roll (Tri-X)? Let me know in the comments.
I LOVED this roll of film... but was it a HORRIBLE MISTAKE?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 місяці тому
I LOVED shooting this roll of Kodak Tri-X film, but was it a horrible mistake? In this video we'll look at the roll in its entirety. You'll see my best shots...and my worst. At the end of the video we'll look at my selections, and I'll discuss why shooting this roll of film may have been a big mistake. Leave a comment, and let me know - did I make the right selections?

    In terms of shape, you have a bottom-left to top-right diagonal in almost all of the images in your final selection, whereas the images that didn't make the cut don't have that shape. Maybe you have a sub conscious preference for the bl-2-tr diagonal shape.

    Very cool. I've never been mentioned in a video before. I'm glad you found it to be valuable. It was great to hear about how you think of your project showing these different contrasts. The comment from our colleague about the 2 similar pictures (2:58) made me think that it was actually cool that 2 photos of a similar composition were showing the different angles of your project. That goes to show how different people may have opposite opinions. It also made me imagine how cool it would be to show your project in pairs of pictures, with contrasting aspects of life, but somehow tied together. For example, the musician and the sculptor. They are both working, but one is quarry and the other is tourism-related. They are both artists, but different forms of expression. The similar composition and place tie them together. If you look at the too first pics on column 3, there's the worker's hand and a hand taking a photo. The guy with the mask could go together with the festival masks. You could tie pairs together by elements like these, poses, items, place, composition, tonality, something clean and tidy with something rough and dirty, and so forth. You can use similar or opposite things to show related pairs. Anyway... sorry for the long-winded comment. It's been very exciting to witness your project this way, as it's happening. How cool is that?

    • @RichardSilvius
      @RichardSilvius Місяць тому

      Thank you so much! That's a really interesting thought about the pairs. You mentioned some great examples. Next week I will begin my final stretch of photographing for this project, so once all the shooting is complete it'll be time to integrate the new material and really start to experiment with different sequencing ideas, so I'll definitely play around with this concept!

    IMO, you eliminated great shots. Looking at 7:55, and if I could only show 10 photos, I would have kept (from top left to bottom right) - 1, 3, 5, 11, 12, 14, 17, 20, 24, 29. That would narrow down the scope of the project, tell a more cohesive story, focusing on the workers. Sometimes editing is not just about eliminating photos, but also about redefining the scope, leaving in what the core of your story is. A project that would talk about all these different aspects of their lives would need more than 10 photos, as I think of it. Who knows, I could be completely wrong. If I wanted to maintain a sense of all these different facets of their lives, I would think of it as 10 "spreads", some of them with more than one photo.Great work, by the way!

    Hello Richard! Great video again, thank you for sharing and also appreciate the transparency and exposing your work like this - not many photographers would do it. _Please keep in mind, this is only my opinion, one opinion out of many probably much more educated ones!_ Comment for the presentation: I think to understand/appreciate the sequencing decisions a little more, we need a bit more context. So a statement or some explanation of not only what this place is about but the intent of the work. Is it purely a documentary project about the place? About the industrial activity? Or is it about the contrast between a tourist town and industrial activity? About the sequence: @7:54 LOL...I wrote a whole comment ...JUST before you started ripping off the wall :D I'll leave it here... 0, I really like the selection of the pictures, there is a great variety to build from. I think you're right about the closeup too, especially if also trying to document the process. 1, Transitions and contrast: assuming that it's about the contrast (based on your previous videos), I think you could leverage that a bit more. At the moment it feels a bit like two parallel worlds are switching back and forth but with no real reason. What I mean is you (rows-columns) fade out (1-4 to 1-6) the industrial activity and then (2-1) fade in the tourist activity...then fade out the tourist activity (2-4) and fade in the industrial activity again (2-5, 2-6). So the whole contrast thing could be played on more, at the moment it's a little too safe, too gradual. The guy with the mask (4-2) - I think he's underutilized, he is a little shocking, eyes always tell a strong story and he could be used to elevate the contrast. 2, The second half after the masked man: not sure what to make of it, there are some great images but overall feels a little bit like filling the space to a zine length, not sure if the sequence is strong enough...AND they could be better utilized to address my previous point, interspersed in the edit. 3, Minor things: 1-5 and 1-6 feel like a jump cut in cinema, cutting similar size, similarly positioned compositions on each other. Maybe one is redundant or move to a different place? 4, I think the sequence (due to the nature of some of the environments) will need a little bit of help to break up the repetitive nature that feels when we're looking at small prints through a video. What I mean is the rock-breaking image is great, and adds to the story but it's a little lost - a good candidate to give more real estate on the page. @9:23 You got rid of some of the best pictures and left the viaduct tourist one, which to me always felt a little banal (both formally and content-wise)...just shows how everyone has a different taste. BUT...what you've left addresses the contrast point in the broader edit much better! Thank you for sharing, this is great!

    Thank you for sharing this workshop experience, I have their Aperture book on their process and have seen many interviews - but would be great to try it first hand sometime. As for working with prints, I find that a hybrid process works best for me. I use LR obviously, but not so much to edit but to document the process. I use some kind of free layout software (changes, Illustrator or something else) where I can freely duplicate, pair...etc images, build clusters...etc. I also print and stick them to the wall, I make sequences out of prints but then also go back to LR and do a book version to document it, I use flipbook software of one of the printers to see it flipping....etc. I try to use each to their advantage, back and forth, with the majority of the decision making happening either in print or in a cheap physical dummy format. Easier to keep track of the versions and if you need to work with someone remotely/periodically, easier to share.

      Thank you for watching, and for leaving this incredible comment! It’s always interesting to hear the ways different people approach things. There’s a lot to be said for being able to easily duplicate a sequence and make small changes while keeping track of the versions, and working in some kind of software definitely facilitates that. i like your concepts. i'd like to see some of those images cropped, to make some of your concepts stronger for the viewer. like a colorful painting that has all the same color values, most of the photos are taken from the same distance. also, if you're going to include random people in your photos, try to find people that stand out, maybe with a striking colored item of clothing or an interesting look (a very old person or group of children) -- those pageant girls are fantastic. i love your high contrast vertical photo of the heads but i wouldn't place it where it is in this line up. i'd place the quarry photo with the blue sky, in its place. i'd keep the woman in the headdress next to the vertical photo for obvious reasons. also, be aware that in this line up, all but that high contrast image are horizontal, which makes it seem like it doesn't belong even though it's your strongest image. again, i like your concepts but you need to make them more obvious for the viewer. it's obvious to you what you're trying to say because it's in your head, but you need to guide the viewer more. a last example would be: in the last photo you say you're bringing us back to the architecture but your photo strongly features the band & the architecture is in the shadowy background. keep putting in the work, that's what matters. 📸📸📸📸📸 5/5

    Thanks for posting, I found this interesting but the impression I got is that they sequence pretty much the same way many other people do, by looking for some kind of affinity between the images either formally or on the level of subject matter, trying to force some kind of continuity. As for your selection for the final image, you mentioned that it has a peaceful sense to it, it is also a higher angle. One of the aesthetic conventions of narrative films is to end on a crane up, huge numbers of films end that way so ending on a higher angle still is in keeping with that convention.

    A valuable story, thank you for sharing. Also, it's very brave of you to walk around the streets talking to a camera!

      Thank you Aliya! IDK if it’s brave as much as it’s just kind of embarrassing. Arequipa seems very safe, especially the part where I’m walking in the video.

    I've always been a fan of contrasty t-max. great pictures once again! I enjoy these videos sitting down looking through the photos with you. I also like that you are looking at them for the first time in this one it reminds me of going through a new roll with my friends

      That’s awesome - great feedback, thank you Caleb! I never really had that experience of looking through a new roll with friends, so I guess I’m getting that vicariously now.

    I'm loving these videos, they're so different from everything else on youtube. Keep it up! I especially liked the portrait of the man with the flowers and the photo of all the vertical lines with the man standing in the doorway. Also, you could try just flipping the video 180 degrees in post production, so that you don't end up with the issue of having to look at your photos upside down. Another thing is that I've never seen T-Max or Tri-X come out so contrasty! I mostly shoot Ilford stocks as I'm from Europe and that's cheaper here, but still. I suspect it's something to do with how the lab is printing your shots. I suspect that they scan the negatives, invert them, and then print digitally, which is probably how that one of the balloon slipped through as a negative.

      Thank you so much! Yeah I think next time I will record the other way around. I thought that might feel strange for viewers but you’re right, it would be much easier. Re: the contrast, I have some theories about it but I’m not sure. You might be right. It also could be they way they developed it… or maybe the camera is underexposing and they compensated for it in the scans… I like the effect but yeah. Need to find out how to reproduce it consistently. In a different city now - so we’ll see what things look like from a different lab!

      Film is addictive, but it’s a fun rabbit hole to dive into. I agree that both sets are very contrasty if they’re shot at box speed? I push most of my HP5 by 2 stops ( ISO 1600) and it’s not as contrasty as these, though I’m also a fan of the effect. Interested to see what way you go with film so added my sub. For me I hadn’t shot film for 20 years and was fully committed to my digital workflow but now, not so sure…!

      @@garywebb5912 Thanks for the sub Gary! I’m in Arequipa and enrolled in a class which has me shooting digital mostly right now - so I have some other videos planned in the meantime but there will be more film videos in the future. Agree with you about the contrast- I think perhaps something the lab was doing with their B&W development- color negative rolls have come out as expected.

    I hope you don't mind me asking what camera you used? I really liked the look of your pictures. They look so good! thanks.

      @RichardSilvius 3 місяці тому

      I don’t mind! I didn’t mention it because I want to avoid giving anyone the idea that they need a certain camera. You don’t need any specific camera to take pictures that look like this. This camera was a dime a dozen in its time and every brand had a version of something similar. That said, it’s a Yashica Electro 35CC.

      @@RichardSilvius Thank you so much for the reply. I agree with you not wanting to mention it because it then becomes the focus of the video and not the pictures but I appreciate you letting me know what camera was used. I'm always looking for small cameras and I haven't been too happy with some that I own like the Olympus XA2 or the Olympus AF-1 Twin. This was a great video and I can't wait to see what else you produce.

    I like what you have done but there is so much click bait out there that distorts the truth of the event, your click bait totally takes away from your otherwise good presentation. I think many are beginning to react to these distortions and misrepresentations on the net. I have unfollowed some I liked because of their click bait presentions

      Thanks Rick! I’m new at this and to be honest just playing around, having fun with it and experimenting. This kind of feedback is going to be crucial for me to figure out what’s working and what’s not. I hope you’ll sub and stick around, because if you liked the presentation I think you will enjoy the stuff I have planned.

    Where/How did you get the negatives printed like that? Is it an original enlargement from the negatives or did you print the scans?

    • @RichardSilvius
      @RichardSilvius 3 місяці тому

      The lab that did the development scanned the negatives for me and also did the prints. So the prints shown here are from their scans.

    Your title is misleading and besides your photos - which are good - you offer no value to anyone coming to learn something based on your video title. I could have done without watching someone’s travel slideshow
