This brings back memories of when I was evacuated to Shaftsbury in 1940/1. My school was at the bottom of Golden Hill and we had to walk up it to get our lunch served by the 'WVS' Women's Voluntary Service in the building at the top. The railing down the side of the hill had two rails in those days. Us kids rescued a sheep that had got itself wedged under the bottom rail. I used to walk up the hill to wave to my mother who was in the hospital after the birth of my brother. I loved fishing in the watercress beds for red throats and sticklebacks and trying to catch the hundreds of rabbits near our cottage. Sadly we went back to London where the bombing was still going on and nights spent in our Anderson air raid shelter. I'm still here to tell the tale. Thanks for the memories, Simon and Will
Thank you for sharing a vivid memory of your times in Shaftesbury. Fascinating to hear what you were experiencing back then in the town. Very glad you still able to share it! ☺
@@MrDaiseymay That's when my house was badly damaged by a Doodlebug. Fortunately my mum, brother and myself had gone to Liverpool to an aunts because the doodlebugs couldn't reach there.
I lived here in Shaftesbury, Dorset from March 1990 to April 1991, in the “newer” part of town, on Saxon Spur. My first husband and I moved there from Switzerland as newly weds for the year for him to help facilitate the sales projects of a then brand new Swiss based and owned springs and pressings company in nearby Sturminster Newton. Our first daughter was born in the hospital in Salisbury, Wiltshire in December 1990. We used to frequent the Maypole Inn pub about 30 minutes away, and the Swan Inn pub in Sturminster Newton. The bakery featured in this video in Shaftesbury had the best tasting sausage rolls I had ever eaten, and i miss them to this day. I had a lovely year living in England, and fondly reminisce about Shaftesbury, and our lives then. Someday, I’ll bring my older daughter back there for a visit. Thank you for your lovely video.

Shaftesbury has always been one of the places I have wanted to visit for years. Now I have done so, and learned a lot about this particular part of Britain, and it's culture and history. Very interesting and so very beautiful. Although I am not so sure about the extremely steep walk down the hill! One would need to be an expert Olympian to negotiate that! Well done indeed again!
