I use to make an orange whipp for my aged parents at 10 am, and 3pm. Non Alcoholic, for it was a can of mandarin oranges, Aldis vanilla bean ice cream and orange juice. Into the container and bring the emulsion blender and after it's frothy. I pored into a pint glass and then a fruit juice glass. My parents at the early 80's were having difficulty to eat food also a shot of liquid vanilla flavoring and orange extracts add a bit more flavoring. But the last two items are an extra to add.
I loved the Idea, David ! Awesome, will do it right up. Please, bring more movie cocktails, it always enhances the experience with your smile. Hugs from a Thousand Caipirinhas.
Love it! I never knew this was a real drink, but the movie is THE BEST, and my friends and I always used, “Orange whip? Orange whip? Who wants an Orange whip?” to signify you’re offering to bring or buy the next round.
I’ve never seen the movie! And I know I’d enjoy it… just watched an obscure Dan aykryd move, sneakers, last night… I need a cocktail for my mom and my mother in law for Sunday… they don’t want spirit forward cocktails that I enjoy… tiki are too strong… I have heavy cream, I have orange juice…. I think this is the Sunday dinner cocktail…
I really like how simple the story of the movie is, it's more about the music and the driving sequences than anything else. They really don't make movies like that anymore.
remember seeing the movie in the theater in 1980 (and many times on TV since). Belushi and Aykroyd were red hot then, coming off of Saturday Night Live where they performed a few times as the Blues Brothers. Seem to remember, at the time. the Blues Brothers movie was the most expensive movie ever made. Going to make this cocktail for sure!
Dan said during a live show that he wanted people to appreciate the music because soon, the only place you would be able to hear it is on vinyl at your local library. And here we are, enjoying all aspects of the movie from all corners of the world.
I think it would really benefit from grating some peel before juicing your oranges. The oils in the peel could definitely help this out some, flavorwise.
Great bar! My grandson (aka my bartender) and I will be making these as soon as it is porch weather again. And we will be watching The Blues Brothers as well. Cheers
I remember growing up in California in the 1960s and getting a fountain drink called the Orange Whip ,it was basically an orange cream slushy ,no alcohol , you served yourself straight from the soda fountain (a right of passage to adulthood for an 8 year old ! )😅🧡
I drank them at a couple of local burger places in southern California as a kid in the '90s and '00s too. Usually next to Horchata and Jamaica. I miss them, after ownership changes none of the places have it anymore.... Bummer

Thank you so much for this tip. I love The Blues Brothers, it's one of my all time favourite movies, and I also love learning new drinks. I saw this video just a few days ago and I knew I had to have one in the weekend. Well, it's the weekend and I'm drinking an Orange Whip and I love it! 😃
My god I loved this movie as a kid. The chase through the mall splits my sides every time. This is a winning drink for sure, gonna crush one for dessert tonight. Cheers David!

Not waiting for tomorrow, I made one tonight with what I had! Holy Crap! It was about 80% of the Orange Julius I had as a kid 60 years ago. Long live the "Orange Whip"
The movie was great. Just don't watch the sequel. There's no way this is not good. I can already taste the mix of orange and cream in my mouth. Sounds like a breakfast drink to me 😀
I totally forgot all about Orange Whip in the Blues Brothers! This sounds absolutely delicious! Was that a Henckels/Zwilling knife you used to cut the oranges? Can't forget the shake with a smile! The orange wheel just tops it off so nicely! Thanks for sharing!

If I remember correctly, the drink didn't actually exist as an alcoholic beverage when he said it in the movie. It was a fountain drink and the costume guy's father provided it for the cast, so John Candy improvised the line. It's something along those lines
It is a variation on the Orange Julius signature drink dispensed through a dedicated machine. The actual recipe may have originated in Germany in the 20s. I can tell you the Orange Whip machines were ubiquitous in the American Midwest around 1980. They certainly would have had one at a theater in downstate Illinois.
@stanwbaker I only remember seeing/hearing the story somewhere. I grew up in the Northeast, and I don't remember ever seeing it, but that doesn't mean they didn't exist here.
