The SG horns. Lol. I swear, I only noticed they were asymmetrical less than five years ago. Well into adulthood. Their association with hard rock and metal, Angus Young,Tony Iommi, the red and black finishes. It all made me think they were specifically designed to have a devil horns vibe. It really speaks on how ahead of their time Gibson was. The V and Explorer prove that. It’s like a time traveler came back and told them to make these shapes, their time will come. Lol. My brother is a Jazz pianist/guitarist and has a Flying V because he always thought they were cool. Some times a jazzhead guy or two will roast him about playing a heavy metal guitar. He then has to set them straight about it originating in the 1950’s, and they don’t know what they’re talking about. That shuts them up every time.
I have stared at SGs for over 30 years and always thought they were symmetrical. It hit me after looking at a Pelham blue one I’ve owned for over 2 years. I was completely shook and it’s taken me months to accept it.
@@larsheuker You can play blues on any pickups. They can, and do. Especially the V. Albert King played a V. Left handed, strung right handed. He just learned to play it upside down.
About that QC thing on the first unboxing. I had the same exact mark on my flying v that I purchased last month. Same exact mark and spot. Seems Gibson's QC in 2021 is lacking.
I’ve bought a Les Paul from the grandson of Raveen the Impossiblist In the back of the theater after the show his dad had just done. It was either really cool or I was hypnotized.
I have been looking at a new SG standard for a while now and I’m pretty bummed with Gibson getting a bit cheap. I won’t pull the trigger just yet because a guitar like that now comes in a gig bag. Yes I could spend $125-$150 to get a case but shouldn’t they give you a hard shell case still? That’s been bugging me a lot.
216trixie that’s super lame then. The last new guitar I bought was about 15 years ago it was an SG standard but in a limited finish. Back then they were like $1100 and came with a hard shell case. That’s just super lame that they are now $1600-$1700 and come in gig bags.
I like the bald man but its strange that it doesn't have the black along the edge by the neck. I lucked out in getting a case for the SG I bought from you. Took about 2 to 3 months so I kept the SG in the box you sent it in. I know what it's like to be teased about a name of a cartoon characters or comic character. Watched Blues Brothers and Blues Brothers 2000 this evening and found myself checking out the guitars more than usual. One of the guys played a Gobsin Double cut like one of the the ones you just reviewed.
That LP going to Canada, get some rosewood and grind some with the small holes on a block metal cheese shredder. Mix a thick paste with Tight Bond wood glue and fill the gap after taping the binding. The folling day very carefully sand flush. Color blend should be almost perfect. Easy repair.
I got right guard deodorant on my 92 SG several years back and it did this very same thing to the finish. in the same spot as i sat and played it. something about the chemicals I'm guessing maybe reacting with the lacquer?
Wood grain lottery: just picked up a Squier Vintage Modified Bass VI in 3-tone burst, almost got the newer one, but that’s Poplar and I read that as a tone wood it’s kind of meh… so the older V-mods are Basswood, and somehow mine wound up with some dancing figuring on the top and back! Never knew basswood could do that! That Custom, black just shows every flaw, scratch and fingerprint.
I have a Manhattan Midnight studio from 2015 and the finish has a consistent fade, it's about half black and half blue. Maybe they've changed it, the grain is a lot more visible on that one with it being more blue so it does look nicer despite seeming uneven. If it's supposed to look like mine it's a rarity where the spay tech had a sneezing fit while doing the black :)
Do you have any other batwing SGs in? Because I think the Kirk Douglas is more sculpted in the lower horn than regular '68 Standards. Looks closer to a 61 but with the big pickguard so it would be interesting to compare if possible.
Hi Austin, what product do you use to condition fret boards? I have a ‘63 Strat with a rosewood fret board (as well as other stuff) I want to treat well. Thanks Steve
The top on my 80 black standard has the exact same lines I wonder if it was the same guy running the sander? My finish also has some of that strange wear too, pretty sure it's "tone wear" and adds sustain 🤘🔨
I use car scratch remover polish with a foam pad on a drill. Sounds sketchy but works amazing. Did a DIY les paul kit and used this method to buff tru oil into a mirror finish. Took like 25 coats and then steel wool between each to get it smooth enough to buff it but a guitar with a good finish already will buff out easily. Give it a try. You wont be disappointed.
Why does Gibson not sell black hardshell cases for SGs from modern case collection anymore like they do for Les Pauls? ;/ I really want that black hard case
I'm a burst guy. Not fond of painted Gibson guitars especially blue or green. The black customs are ok. Tobacco cherry and honey burst are my taste. You know your stuff for sure. I bought my first Tobacco burst les Paul in 1976 when I was 21 new from the store. So I've been around les Paul for way longer than you have been alive. But I like your channel and subscribed
The gig bags are much better, apart from the tacky fake leather finish is it looks cheap. The Fender gig bags are on a different planet, really classy. I think I’d buy a Fender bag for the LP S…
I like the original Captain Kirk over the more recent one. The one thing I don’t understand is the fact that they put a rosewood fretboard instead of ebony.
The World: here's my mint guitar. Trogly: it's not even very good. But, yes, we would love to see a Burst hunt. Maybe, like, once a month. Thang cue, Mr. Trogly. Ü

I really like that Gibson soft case. I didn’t know they came in black, I’ve only seen the brown. Anyone know if that’s real leather? I wish Epiphone offered those. The same case just with Epiphone on it. I would get one for my Wilshire Pro. Technically it’s called an Epiphone Custom Shop Wilshire Pro, but the phrase Epiphone Custom Shop sounds funny to me because I’m sure that’s more of a concept than an actual manufacturing facility. I could be wrong though.
Thats definitely a sweat stain. Deodorant? Lol. Your sweat does damage after a while, and this thing has went through the paces, so ..but, I love players grade guitars. Attitude and scars of many gigs and miles. Love it.

Glarry, if you're out there. We need a guitar body with gloss black finish so Trogly can scratch it up and then use cutting polish on it! 😃

I noticed the first time I saw a lefty, it stands out for some reason.
I don’t even play guitar but I’m so fascinated with this show.
That black Les Paul… it’s a 40 year old guitar, that’s been played… as it should have been!
TrogDog in the house!
The Manhattan Midnight is my favorite color from Gibson. They look fantastic in person.

Loving your content. I am learning so much! I purchased my first ever Gibson, the "Raven," thanks to your video. Awesome stuff!
The house is in trogly!

Nobody sends guitars out with hard shell cases unless you're paying $2,000 or more usually.

Oh man, that blue Gibson is so very beautiful.
Cool guitars as always.....that blue studio is amazing
There’s a guy at my local guitar shop that is actually named Logan Paul. I feel so bad for him.

Is it just me or did the finish crack go between the pickups on the custom too?

Trogly single handedly changing the game!!!
Just had the one I bought arrive today. If you can ever part with the cash, it is absolutely worth it.
Could have bought one last month, a player's grade '77. Kind of kicking myself for not doing it. The price was very reasonable. :/
Love that Kirk Douglas SG Custom! The Black Les Paul Custom for 1980 is in pretty nice shape... Cool guitar as well
Wood grain lottery: just picked up a Squier Vintage Modified Bass VI in 3-tone burst, almost got the newer one, but that’s Poplar and I read that as a tone wood it’s kind of meh… so the older V-mods are Basswood, and somehow mine wound up with some dancing figuring on the top and back! That Custom, black just shows every flaw, scratch and fingerprint.
So if the crack stopped, then whats the line between the pickups, is it a check that happens to be right aligned with the crack?
I like to use some Meguiars and my orbital buffer coupled with a fine bonnet and the results work for me.
Great episode, in depth and comprehensive! Cheers!

Is it possible that that crack on that black custom continues through the body from the bridge pickup to the neck? Looks like it right at 17:25.

Love those ‘70s and ‘80s black Les Paul Customs, although I prefer the gold hardware.
Black customs r awesome! Check out the album cover of The Cult Sonic Temple.
Billy Duffy is a rock and roll bad ass. Great cover, but cant decide which was better, SONIC TEMPLE or ELECTRIC. Both are awesome.
I love this color, it’s pretty amazing
Oh god, SG horns are asymmetrical? Guess I'm one of today's lucky 10000.
Those could be shaws. 1980 was the first year, and a ton got date stamped like that. I personally have a pair from June 1980.
The blackburst makes it visually smaller niiiice😜👍
The green is nice on that cap'n Kirk. I have a like new 1st run been thinking about selling.
