    Hi Rina. I stumbled across your channel a few days ago and I watched all the videos you had uploaded up until that point. I decided to go and buy myself a 2020 version in Butterscotch Blonde, even with all the flaws you mentioned and it was delivered today! I absolutely love it!
    I’ve not been brave enough to start taking it apart, but I still enjoyed the videos!
    I’m just starting out (again) at the age of 32, I took a handful of lessons when I was 12 but I only learnt 5 chords before losing interest as the guitar teacher at school was boring, I just wanted to come back and say thank you so much for inspiring me to make the purchase and get back into the guitar!
    I’m so happy I haven’t forgotten those chords I learnt in school and I’m now looking for a tutor local to me so I can progress further with my rediscovered passion!
    You are so cool! Thanks again for making these videos! Keep up all the great work you’re doing! The world needs more of you!

      Hey ChildOfTheUniverse, your comment really moved me!! Thank you so much for your kind words and I’m so happy that you love your new guitar!! We’re of a similar age and I know there’re always lots of things to do, but stick to guitar playing (or music in general)! It’s such a rewarding hobby. I think it’s never too late to start (or restart) something you’ve always dreamt about and I’m so happy to help with the decision making! When I started playing, I went to my music teacher in school and told her about me playing guitar now and apologised about knowing only 3 chords so far. But she just smiled at me and said that every famous guitar player out there started with just 3 chords. And you already know 5! ;) And don’t worry about the disassembly. Enjoy your brand new instrument in this beautiful mint condition. My guitar looks exactly like yours from the inside and if there’s a real reason to change something, I would wait until it has its first scratch marks. During that time, I’ll try to find a way to upgrade the sound without spending money on new pickups and I’m really curious how it’ll turn out. Thanks again so much for your kindness and I wish you happy playing!! :D

    Great review ! I own two affinities - a 2011 butterscotch and a 2016 sunburst. Those older ones have alder bodies, full size pots and those plastic jackplates. The body thickness is about 40 mm and the neck pickup is not adjustable through the pickguard. I like them a lot because they can be modded very easily. I always replace the switch and do some shielding and grounding. Unfortunately the original fender pickguards don't fit at all. The bridges are also hard to replace because they have a unique size. As you said: they changed some of the specs. String through was never meant to be an affinity spec.....according to fender itself it was just some kind of mistake....

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! :) That’s some very interesting info there! Do you use a Gibson-style toggle switch? I’d really love to change the switch blade because I’m an SG player and it drives me crazy! I can imagine how the string through body was a mistake… Oh my… big companies!! It’s really rare in a guitar with that price tag. I might add the string capsules to my Tele but not without a proper jig. No experiments with a drill bit that size! ;)

      @@Bandforge My poor new Affinity had to go back to the dog pound - it's Alder body is thinner than a Tele (among other shortcomings) - So I just took delivery of the Squier Clasic Vibe 50s Tele in Butterscotch and though double the price it's SO much better - and matches like a twin to my 3 yr old CV Strat, both with the glassy clear coated fretboard. The pine CV Tele (at least mine) weighs 9.1 lbs!! The Pine must've been on a raccoon diet ! But as per usual the cheapskate ends up paying the most - sure I was starting to compensate and even LIKE the Affinity but noooo I wasn't going to fall for it - should've gone CV from start. But the Affinity you're describing is the older model… I've made a mistake in the video when saying that the new version is thinner and actually it's full size and the newer one doesn't have an alder body.
      All of that aside, once you've found the guitar that you like, there's no reason to change it. ;)
      The CV should be the better built instrument anyways. I just prefer the modern feel of the Affinity (especially the flat bridge compared to the ashtray).

    I'm thinking of picking one of these up as an upgrade from my 15 year old first act electric, but I get so nervous about the build quality being off, I don't want an uneven neck 😭
    $200 is the most I can justify getting a guitar for, I don't need a fender headstock or the highest quality hardware.. just something that feels, looks, plays, and sounds nicer than my first act with some longevity.
    also I love your shirt! I bought the same one when the midnight were in tour in fort lauderdale!

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  3 роки тому +1

      I think you can buy one. Don't be nervous! :) You know what to look for when you guitar arrives and if it's not even, get a replacement. These necks are built with CNC machines and that's why the steps in the factory where something can go wrong are minimal. Obviously someone didn't handle my neck so well, but even that little paper shim was no big deal and works just fine. Receiving parcels at the moment is a issue for me, otherwise I would just have called Thomann for a new guitar or just the neck. They are very customer friendly and there should be similar shops around your place.

      @@Bandforge This is how I see it I don't think it makes much sense spending a lot of money on expensive pickups on a cheapish guitar. You can buy really good chinese made pickups relatively cheaply. Especially in the last 10 years or so there has been some great pickups made in China etc.
      Squire guitars are fairly expensive here in New Zealand the affinity telecaster cost $599 here that's about $400 American dollars.

      Oh. absolutely! I've put some Tesla pickups (20 € each with would be around 33 NZD or 24 USD) in my beloved Epiphone SG and they sound fantastic! I've tried really expensive pickups from Gibson, too and I can't say they did anything more. Can you recommend a company for cheap pickups from china? I'd be very interested to upgrade some projects I still have lying around… ;)
      $400 is really expensive for an Affinity! If you're a crafty person, you could consider building your own guitar from a kit. I've read good things about Pitbull Guitars: bit.ly/2QAndxj They're based in Australia and shipping to New Zealand shouldn't be more than 33 NZD. If shipping to europe wasn't so expensive I would have already bought a semi-hollow Strat! xD

Strats I had 1 that was bell like crystal tone..sold it and never found anything..I had a squire 2003 body it was the heaviest I ever had...it wouldn't do clear bell chimey with squire 50s vibe pups...they sounded to hot in that guitar...I'm not sure why but I sold it ..can't find hard tail strats...even with locking tuners I don't mess with strat trems..so I'm hoping this turns out well .I had a squire tele it was light bluish..I liked it but sold it because that color wasn't me..

    I bought a Squier affinity tele on black friday. I to noticed the neck pickup had a lower volume and darker then the bridge and noticed it was far away from the strings. I opened it up and it's screwed to the bottom of the pickup cavity with no way of adjustment. Then i noticed that replacement pickups were adjustable. I told myself, it can't be that simple could it? So I took a couple of pickup springs I had laying around and installed them under each tab of the pickup, so as I turned the screws in and out, it adjusted the pickup height. I adjusted the stock neck pickup to about the same distance from the strings as the bridge pickup, wow. The volume is now close the what the bridge pickup is and the tone got a little more twang in it (brighter). I think the problem is the neck pickup in these Squire's are just mounted to low. I will not be upgrading my pickups.

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  3 роки тому

      So cool that you made it work before buying new pickups!! The magnet's distance to the strings is really crucial for the sound. I have experienced similar things with a very cheap Tele copy. I didn't have are spare springs, so I used a piece of sponge for dishwashing (of course a new one ;)) and put it underneath the pickup. That also did the trick. In your case, it could be a option to carefully drill two holes into the pickguard (make a template and use some aditional tape other the spot you want to drill in case you might slip) and mount the pickup like it's done in the 2020 model (and the expensive Fenders). :)

    Got it few days ago.
    Is it supposed to be that heavy or did they change the weight recently?
    I weighted my self with and without the guitar...more or less 5kg.
    Isn't it too heavy???
    I checked with other local guitar stores and they informed me that the weight is indeed 5kgs(-/+)

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Artemis! As far as I know, the weight of the classic vibe 50's Teles vary a lot between 3 kg to 4 kg, so 5 kg seems pretty heavy to me. I've never owned one myself, though, so I don't have "hands on" experience here. The variation of weight comes from different densities of the wood. Squier guitars are quite cheap and therefore, the manufactorers just take more random pieces of wood while the more expensive guitar's woods go through a stricter selection process. Do you play the guitar a lot while standing? Is the heavy weight an issue or is it OK? I personally prefer very light guitars in the range between 3 kg to 3,5 kg.

      Yes I thought that my guitar would be around 3,5 to 4kg.
      I don't play standing up, but again it feels heavy on my leg if I play for long. I only have it for a week.
      Will I get used to it? Who knows... I never owned an electric guitar before.
      I m actually very disappointed regarding the weight and I waited for soooo long to be able to purchase this guitar...
      I called the online store and asked if they could check for a lighter one, so I could exchange it, but the assured me that the weight is normal and it only varies for some grams... if so.
      I sent an email to another local guitar store and I asked what the weight of this guitar is.
      Their answer was 5-5,38 kg.
      Is it likely that 2021 model is heavier than the previous ones?
      I don't think there is something else I can do. I guess I have to stick with it...

      Hmm... that really makes me curious. It's a little too late to make any phone calls today but I'll check with some stores I know tomorrow and write to you again and tell you what they say about the typical weight of this particular guitar.
      You'll get used to heavier weights but I think especially your first (and only) guitar should be as comfortable as possible, so you love playing it and stick to your new passion. You could always try to get a lighter replacement body (usually the sellers weigh the bodys so you know what you get), but it's expensive, so not ideal. I think it's difficult to give you a solid advise just now. I'll try to find out more tomorrow and come back to you later! Oh, by the way… is your guitar top heavy then or not at all?

    Ok got the newest affinity with belly cut and string through, split shaft tuners. I can't get the intonation right like I can my mexican strat. I love the neck on my affinity much more than my strat. After watching 5 trillion videos about intonation, I am thoroughly confused because none of them work. I had a stroke so my eyes aren't reliable on seeing if the neck is straight. I know the guitar is a gem I just want it adjusted right.

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  2 роки тому

      You can also check, if the neck is straight by using a long ruler with notches at the positions of the frets. This way you could even use a flashlight to really see what's happening, if that's still hard to see. A ruler like that can be found here: bit.ly/3pNAEY6 This shop is on the higher price segment, though. I'm sure there are more affordable options. I hope that helps at least a bit and if you have more questions, please ask! :)

    Do you happen to have any idea to why some of the 2020 Affinity Telecasters have string through body’s, and some have top loader bridges? My 2020 Affinity Telecaster came with a string through bridge.

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  3 роки тому +1

      I've learnt from one of the comments that it was some kind of misunderstand in the factory specs. That's why some guitars have the string-through while the other don't. Especially when you consider the 2021 it makes even more sense. The new 2021 Telecasters all have string-through-body bridges for about 20 to 30 € more on the price tag. It seems possible that they got the specs from 2020 and 2021 mixed up somehow, but that's all I know.

    i'm thinking about buying this guitar as my first ever or should i buy an stratocaster instead?

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  3 роки тому +4

      I think that depends on what kind of music you enjoy playing the most. The Strat is the more versatile guitar because of the three pickups and there’s the HSS option, if you want a humbucker. Still, if I had to choose for myself, I’d probably would had advised me to get the Tele. Both Affinity guitars cost the same, while the Strat is more expensive in production (belly cut, arm cut, tremolo cavity) and the hardware (tremolo bridge). This indicates that (if the production company gets the same amount of money for both guitars) the luthiers can invest more time into building the Tele, so it should be the better quality instrument. On top of that, a beginner doesn’t need a tremolo and a tremolo can cause tuning instability (I had this really bad with my first guitar which was a Strat-copy). The Tele on the other hand has a fixed bridge which is easier in adjustment and won’t have issues with the tuning at all. When you are more advanced, you can save some money for a Fender Player Strat. I think this is a really good guitar for little money but too expensive for the first guitar. So in short my recommendation: Buy a Squier Affinity Tele now and a Fender Player Strat later if you want another Fender-Style guitar!
      In any case, happy playing! ;)

    Would you recommend this guitar to some one who has been playing acoustic guitar for a decade now and now shifting to an electric?

    • @Bandforge
      @Bandforge  3 роки тому

      Absolutely! I think a Tele is great because it's very easy to handle with the simple electronics it has. Even the setup is not too bad because of the fixed bridge and you won't have tuning issues that come with cheaper Strats. Another type of electric guitar you should consider is a hollow body or semi-hollow body. They feel more similar to acoustic guitars but don't sound like the typical electric guitar. In general, these are more expensive but there are cheap options like this: bit.ly/3anjoBV

      I think the Tele is versatile enough, yes, definetly! The big plus for electric guitars in general is that it's very easy to extend your sound with additional effetcs, such as delays, flangers, reverbs for more sound options. And if you want even more versatility you could always swap out one or both of the pickups with humbuckers and change the electronics. Do you have experience with soldering? ;)

If it's the latter, pick the Affinity in Olympic White (it's made in the same factory as the 2020 Artic White model afaik) and consider replacing the neck at some point, if the laurel fretboard bothers you. All necks are made of maple.

    The things you are picking apart are normal for a guitar this cheap. It was manufactured as an affordable student guitar and works perfectly for its intended purpose. You DON’T upgrade this guitar as it is a waste of money to do so. If you want better tuners and neck fit, you buy a Mexican version of the guitar which also has cleaner electronics and is more balanced. Your guitar is moving because you have a cheap, slippery nylon strap. A real padded strap will keep the guitar in place with no problem. Fret polish? For a beginner? Where is your corkscrew, Rina?

    • @lil_weasel219
      @lil_weasel219 2 роки тому

      My Yamaha Pacifica superstrat is in the price range, yet the frets are polished well and electronics are better than on the squier versions, as is the ability to hold tuning.
      Cheap guitars have become amazing yes, but you still mention these things not only because people want to know what they are buying for their needs, but also how different cheap guitars compare.
