The thing about “cheap” guitars is that the big variable is quality control. This is where a lot of money is saved for the manufacturer. This is also why some people find AMAZING Squiers, etc. and others have had terrible experiences with the same guitars. The key to avoiding disappointment is to find one in person that you love so you know what you’re getting instead of pulling the slot machine with an online order. Definitely buy from somewhere with a good return policy if you must order online.

This is absolutely true. Squier has stepped up their QA in recent years, so it's gotten a lot better. However, being able to do a good set-up and minor repairs is a plus.

BW MadDog [retired] Generally true (though not entirely in my experience), but hundreds of thousands of people shopping for a Squier level guitar are not comfortable and/or willing to put in that time, and that’s assuming they have access to those tools in the first place. And that’s assuming they even know something is wrong in the first place. Even a total beginner who can pick up and play multiple guitars in person can feel a difference AND ask for assistance.
Either way, I still say it’s best to try something in person or order from a reputable dealer who allows easy returns. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I've owned over 20 guitars, US and Mexican Fenders, Musicmans, Hohners, Yamahas etc and, I've just picked one of these up. What can I say, it's simply fantastic, superb quality....amazing action, proper tele twang on the bridge and warm on the neck pups, beautiful finish, keeper. Mine is an Indonesia 2018 built tele. Beinf the Affinity its slightly thinner not a bad thing makes its lighter. Comfortable to play standing and lovely when sitting which surprised me.
Obviously butterscotch, maple neck with black pick guard is THE classic combination.

My first guitar about 14 years ago was a white Affinity Tele.
It played great, held tune very well despite my clumsy playing and people complimented the tone when I played live, which says lot because it has nothing to do with my skill as a player! I really liked the higher gain tones on the bridge pickup. It sounded massive.
I wonder if the quality of the Affinity has gone up in the last ten years because they seem to be priced how Squier Standard used to be priced, with Bullet at the price of Affinity.

I have the same Tele, had almost the same pro/con list, mine has a flawless body with no visible knots like yours and I wasn't sold on the ceramic pickups, they don't quite have that Tele "twang" for me. What I have since done is 1) Replaced the pickups with cheap ($10 on ebay) AlNiCo ones. 2) Replaced the pots and switch for better quality, I also used audio taper for the volume. 3) Replaced the tuners for locking ones after the gears stripped on one. 4) Installed a Tusq string tree.
After all the upgrades, this has become the go-to Tele for recording with the 90's American Tele Plus V1 left hanging on the wall.

Have a butterscotch blonde affinity series myself from 2006, those came with removable knobs. Also they did customers right by switching to a metal plate around the jack. I had to replace the original with a metal one after the plastic one snapped in half (if that happens to you a chrome replacement looks great) overall a good cheap guitar. Still a fun one to get out every once in a blue moon to screw around with. Great review man!

Good review. I just bought a Squier Affinity Tele online. I wanted the butterscoth blonde, but the place I ordered from was out, so I got the 2 tone burst. It is a beautiful flawless guitar. After looking mine over, it is crafted in China, and I think they made a mistake in my favor when they built it. It has the Affinity neck, but the body is 1-3/4” thick like a standard or vintage vibe body. It also is string thru the body. My neck pick up is adjustable on the pick guard. Also the jack has a nice metal oval cover. I havent opened it to check for shielding paint, but it is low hum. I am very happy with the guitar. It looks and sounds great to me.

Phillip Holt I havent seen any of the butterscoth blonde affinities so far in other than the maple fret board. I think they are are doing some other tele’s with Indian Laurel fret boards. Squier has definitely stepped up their quality in the Chinese made guitars in 2019.

Indonesian squires are made by Cortex industries, (originally Japanese) or better known as Cort guitars. They make many guitars for other brands manly in the sub $ 600 mark. Esp ltd, Ibanez, Dean, Fender, to name but a few... They are currently the biggest guitar maker in the world .
Years ago I had a Cort acoustic electric cut away with a solid top, which I bought new for $350 and at the time in New Zealand you couldn't find a solid top acoustic for under $700. It was a pretty good guitar for the money and back in the early nineties. I currently have the squire affinity tele HH special edition made by Cort.

Upgrade the pick-ups to the Vintage Noiseless pups and it's a beast. Never had much of a reason to upgrade but eventually got a great deal on a Baja Tele. Probably will never get rid of the Squier, I have it strung with heavy strings for alternate tunings and it's great!

I got a Squier Affinity Tele from my sons for XMas last year (thanks, guys!!) and was very pleasantly surprised. Great feel, nice weight, and great playability. Mine, however, was made in China as opposed to Indonesia, so there may be slight differences there. I'd say first thing with any axe bought from somewhere other than a guitar shop (I think they got it off Amazon) - take it to a shop and get it checked out and properly set up. I did this with mine and they did have to do a few fixes right off (new volume pot and resoldered the output jack). I also upgraded the strings (Ernie Ball Cobalt 10's) and put on a 3-ply pickguard. Even with the work, it's still one of my favorite guitars to play. This one's a keeper!

First the body was slightly thinner than a normal tele, second it was a string-thru body, third the neck was one piece with skunk strip down the back, fourth the neck pickup adjusted on pick guard, lastly the input jack was the cup style. Overall a very nice guitar, played easily. The only con for me was the pu’s were weak. After almost two years of playing it, I found a fantastic deal on a new 2017 MIM telecaster which is a unbelievable guitar. So my Affinity sits waiting for me to modify it! 😬

Watching your live stream in 2021, where someone asked if they should buy one, and you said- “uh, yes!’. That must have lingered in my brain for a few days. Stuck inside during the COVID-19 lockdown, I felt like I need guitar #11 so went on eBay and bought one out of Texas. Great price, new- even when adding exchange rate, shipping and duty. Sweetwater isn’t shipping to Canada; current Amazon Canada seller, super-inflated at this time. Hey, I just found this UA-cam now, tho it was your 2021 tip that hit me, as I know Landon is one incredible Telecaster aficionado. And player, so thanks. The Harley Benton SC Junior from Thomann’s Germany was also a great review/score/purchase. Thx.

Do you have a review on the Fender Squier Classic Vibe ? For $399 I’ve heard that it’s just as good as a guitar double the price. I have the same series in 'Slick Silver' with a lorel fingerboard. You can get the knobs off, I had the same issue with them scratching a little but I've managed to lift them a little and they're now much smoother, I used a heavy plastic plectrum to gently (very gently!) prize them up from underneath the knobs. The tuners seem to hold well but they're a little bit sticky so you can have a bit of jumping from flat to sharp and back before you can get them bang on tune. I usually play Les Pauls but I wanted a single coil tele for pretty much exclusively clean tones, I took the 9-42 strings off and replaced them with 11-48 and it really sounds gorgeous. So much better than I was expecting for my money. I might just change the tuners for some proper Fender ones, maybe I'll upgrade the pickups some day but for now I'm seriously pleased with this guitar!

My 2017 Affinity Tele, a butterscotch blonde like yours, was crafted in China. It is routed for a single-coil neck pickup, not for a humbucker as yours is, and the cavities don't have shielding paint. I put it in Keef tuning when I bought a Squier Standard Tele. (The Standard Tele is of course in standard tuning.) The output socket on mine sits in a plastic plate.
The Affinity is the only Tele model I know of with top loading. All the other Squier Teles, even the Bullet, are strung through the body. I've been told the strings on a toploader Tele don't feel quite as stiff as those on one strung through the body, and this affects how it plays; but I haven't noticed any such difference myself.

If I had one of these I would be tempted to convert it to string through, change the tuners, pups, nut, pickups.
By the time all this had been done the cost involved would have justified getting The Classic Vibe in the first place or a made in Mexico Fender, the trouble is there are lots of great inexpensive Telecasters these days.
In 1984 I went with a friend to our local music store, he was buying a Fender Tele in sunburst, while he was trying out some models the salesman pointed out that the Squier Models were really good, they were as well, in fact, they sounded better than the Fender but my friend was determined to get a Fender and he did but got the blonde instead of the sunburst, I ended up getting the Squier in sunburst for Christmas and I loved it but after 3 years I swapped it and a Commodore disk drive for an Ibanez Roadstar which I still have and love but I wish I had never swapped it.

I bought one IDENTICAL to this one all except for the string setup. Mine had holes in the back and was a "string-through" where the strings run through the body which I wish they made all of them like that. You usually only see that on expensive models of telecasters. I don't know if I just got lucky or what but I haven't been able to find another Squier Affinity Series telecaster with a string through body. I bought it in a kit with an amp that came on amazon about 3-5 years ago for under $250. Fender Frontman 15G amp came with it. I wish I would have never gotten rid of that guitar but I was offered $350 for just the guitar and I figured I could go online and buy another kit and keep the amp and get the same deal and make $125 out of the deal. Well, I did just that, only difference is the guitar was just like this one and wasn't "string-through". A lot of people don't think it makes a difference, but the difference in sustain is EXTREMELY noticeable to anyone with a sharp ear for guitars. I said all that to say this.... Anybody know where I can get a string through body? lmao

I had to slot the the saddles like an 1/8th inch more to get enough travel on the E,A,D string in order to adjust the saddles far enough back to intonate. Along with cutting down the corresponding adjustment screws and springs.
The bridge and string through rout is about a 1/4" to far forward.
Either way its dialed in now and plays great.
