    My 200,000 mile 2010 Prius burns 1 quart of oil every 800 miles and burns much more on the highways. Me and my girlfriend are Uber drivers in Columbia, MO. We drive 40,000 each a year for over 3 years now. This is my third, gen 3 prius. On this 2010, oily guck clogs small ports in the air intake causing the engine to run bad. The air intake then needs to be removed and cleaned. Whilst cleaning the intake manifold, it's simple and cheap to replace the PVC valve, as I did, and as everyone should do when working on this problem .
    I saw no reduction in the amount of oil my car burned after replacing the PVC. After cleaning the intake, it took about 10,000 of driving before those small ports in the air intake manifold clogged up again. You know if they're clogged when you feel the car shudder, with an engine ping noise during an extremely low power band from the gas engine. This will happen at any speed, but only when the gas engine is barely throttled up at all. Like going slightly down hill on the highway. You will feel the engine shutter as it barely needs to exert any power. At low speed, you can hear the engine pinging. The power band supplied by the gas engine required to hear the misfiring and feel the shudder is lower than the electric engine needs to take off on level ground.
    To help diagnose this problem, run the main battery down low enough that the gas engine needs to turn on. Your gas engine will then ping when barely taking off on level ground. You can also go up a slight hill at a constant speed around 20-30 mph and you will hear and feel the problem.
    I learned how to put an oil catch can on my car by the amazing NutzAboutBolts2 videos. (Make sure you use a better hose than what comes with this catch can and give yourself a bit of tolerance in the hoses so you can remove the can and drain it.) My catch can will fill up after 10 hours of highway driving. That's about 600 miles of driving on the highway. City driving it fills up twice as slow. The more oil the car burned, the more that was in the catch can. My catch can contents look more milky though.
    It's been 15,000 miles now since i installed the catch can and the engine is running fine still. So far my catch can has prevented the manifold from clogging up. My 2011 and 2012 "Prieye" don't burn oil and don't and may not need a catch can. But I think this catch can is keeping my oil guzzling 2010 prius alive! Good thing because I need to get another 100,000 miles and 3 years out of her until I have it paid for. Ugh...

I am hoping that rate doesn't increase until I can trade it away. I've heard the 2011 and 2010 have bad rings. I just didn't know that until I bought one.

    Hi there - hope NaB still follows this thread. I recently bought a 2015 PiP with the -54 intake, normal cold-starts, 50-52 MPG in Hybrid mode, no oil consumption and no DTCs. The original owner had done 5k oil change interval. I just removed the air filter box, throttle body and EGR pipe for cleaning and inspection.
    At 66k, the throttle body is clean on the top-side while the bottom had a smear of oil on the wall but the butterfly was clean. There was ~2 tablespoons of oil at the bottom of the intake. I didn't remove the intake, EGR and EGR cooler but the main orifices on the intake and EGR have about 1mm buildup so no blockage yet. The EGR pipe (elbow) had about 1.5mm of sooty buildup at the leading edge of each end but very little inside. Cleaning it with brake cleaner was easy. I plan to remove the whole EGR circuit for cleaning and replace the PCV at 70 or 75k.
    Since you have an OCC, do you think it's really effective in reducing oil accumulation at the bottom of the intake? Although I like the idea of having the OCC, I don't want to remove the OCC, the intake, related hoses and put everything back to its original format for Smog Inspection every 2 years. As a maintenance routine, I will remove/clean the throttle body and wipe off the oil in the intake annually. Do you think that's sufficient w/o having an OCC?

  • @candeffect
    @candeffect 4 роки тому +12

    Test the effectiveness of the can by inserting a cotton swab in the PCV side hose. The swab will have oil on it.
    Insert a cotton swab in the intake manifold side hose. The swab should be very clean. If it is oily, the can is too small or poorly designed.
    My DIY cans, one between the PCV/intake manifold and one between the engine cover breather hose/air duct, take out 99% of the oil.
    No OCC is perfect. Most commercial cans will catch oil but the effectiveness has to be tested.
    Effective OCCs will make all gasoline engines last longer. Vehicle manufacturers don't include them because of cost, extra maintenance, and longer-lasting vehicles.

    My 2012 plugin has 85,000 miles on it and it never seemed to burn oil. However I followed your advise, installed the oil catch can, and yesterday after only 4,000 miles decided to empty it. I drained 30 ml out that otherwise would have gone into the engine and deposit carbon! BTW, I used the flexible metal straw from WD40 to insert into the can's dip stick hole and drew the oil out using a brake fluid change pump from Harbor Freight. Real easy since i could leave the oil catch can in place.
    So thanks for the advise. I'll keep watching.

  • @ricksanchez2090
    @ricksanchez2090 5 років тому +2

    I noticed that the dip stick that came with my can which is visually identical to yours, is actually about 1 inch shorter than the can is deep. By the time you see ANY oil on the stick you will have about 20% of the can full. you can stick any thin straight object (metal coat hanger wire or bailing wire worked for me) in until it hits bottom to get a real reading, and also hold the bottomed out wire with your fingernails against the can top and compare the bottomed out object total length to the included dipstick length to verify that the dipstick is much shorter. I also recommend to pack the can with 2 of the corse stainless steel scrubs from the dollar store, as this will significantly increase your baffling, especially with these cheaper chinesium cans.
    DO NOT use regular steel wool, as the heat and water condensates will rust it and it will break up and feed back into your intake. also DO NOT use any fine wool of any types as it will have a higher change of deteriorating the finer the wool is

    The only thing I take issue with is how dirty that oil is. I would shorten the oil change the intervals to 6,000 miles, which is what the engineers originally noted for the 2ZR-Fxx engines. Considering how inexpensive 0W-20 is from places like Costco and filters/crush washers are on Amazon, that's a low cost, high reward investment for any Toyota.
    I'd also consider a placement to a point lower than the PCV under the intake manifold as a more effective location. I think (at least on 4th gen Priuses) there's a couple of places it could go. If I recall correctly...

    The problem is that Toyota knew about this problem. A "maintenance bulletin" was issued but they failed to tell the customers about it. And it wasn't just about burning oil but catastrophic engine failure. And these were in cars that were meticulously maintained, or so I thought, by the Toyota dealership. All turned a blind eye, the dealership and corporate when I tried to plead my case. I will NEVER buy another Toyota.

    It looks like the car burned 0.4 quart of oil over that 7000 miles, and the OCC caught less than 1/4 of a cup. If those numbers are correct, then the OCC reduced oil burning by 15%.
    I was thinking about whether to install an OCC on my 2012 Prius, but the 15% improvement made me hesitate for spending the extra effort. Besides, the Prius has a port injection, not GDI, right? So that 15% will not cause much deposition on the valve. Could you please comment the necessity of a OCC for such a car?

It differs from yours in the oil used, it has been using 5w30 for as long as I have records, I have castrol magnatec 5w30 start stop and no oil consumption at all. 0w20 might be a little thin, even though toyota reccomends it. If you use 5w30 you might stop oil consumption, it might be the reason mine was switched to 5w30, as 0w20 is what toyota recommends and this car was serviced mostly at toyota, getting 10k miles oil and filter change.

      QC Support the PCV valve was moved lower, causing the intake to fill with oil in the 2011-2015 models. An EGR valve and cooler was added in 2011, and the intake manifold oil problem causes the EGR to clog quickly with carbon.

Do you think OCC might not be functioning as it supposed to or should I replace with the heavy duty hose ( thicker one) , like the one I got that connects from PCV valve to inlet of OCC. I guess in the Prius, the pistons were changed in 2014 and the piston rings were changed also in 2015, so 2015 has a different piston and piston ring set and 2016 has a different piston and piston ring set from 2015, so does anyone have a 2015 or 2016 with high mileage that isn't burning excessive oil?

      I have 2 Priuses; 2010 Prius Base has 375k miles and 2015 Prius Two has 185k miles. Only noticing 2010 and 2011 Prius has oil consumption. 2015 Prius doesn't have any oil consumption (every between 600 to 1k miles). Did cleaning PCV valve, EGR pipe and cooler, intake manifold, Yellowtop Battery (recharge battery every 6 months), recharged/reconditioned Hybrid (HV) battery(recharge every during oil change), oil change every 15k miles on 2015 Prius only (w/ Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 and Mobil1 oil filter), 5k or 7.5k miles oil change for 2010 Prius only(w/ Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 and Toyota oil filter)(no high mileage motor oil needed), coolant change and so on.

    you are misinforming people dude. This is a serious problem that deserves a recall. But Toyota will not do it unless we the owners of these cars file a law suit. The failure is defective piston rings with an approximate price of $10 per ring. But the cost of the replacement of these rings is somewhere between $1200 & $3000. So people don't listen these dude. He probably got money from Toyota to undermine the problem that would cost Toyota millions if not billions

      TheJess Ylleg I don’t think you’re making much sense. This is poor engineering, sure, but not class action material. Most models of car have a horrible design flaw. The gen3 prius’ is in its PCV valve location; it’s that simple.

      if it was class action material, then you would have no problem finding a lawyer to handle the case on contingency. Instead of being a paranoid nut job put your time where your mouth is and handle it if it means so much to you.

      You are so RIGHT! Had a 2010 Prius and did assiduous maintenance performed by the dealer on time everytime here in Lake Park, Florida from 2010 to 2018. The engine self destructed on my wife going to work due to zip oil (burned) in the crankcase and this within 3 months between oil changes. The deaf ear shit that the service manager and one of the owners gave me was unbelieveable given the fact that they were in possession of a "service bulletin" warning of this potentially catastrophic problem. She's lucky, when the car stalled in traffic, she wasn't injured or killed. Up until this incident I was a true believer in the product and dealer. Prior to this documented coverup I had purchased two cars from these people within seven years. Thanks to the dealer's not giving a shit as well as corporate Toyota's deaf ear, I will never purchase another car from these people ever again. And I mean never. And I've made it my life's work to get the word out so too bad, so sad. They had their chance to own up and come clean but instead opted for the tactics of a film flam used car shyster. Buyer Beware indeed.

      @@michaelbridges6102 Michael, you are either misinformed, a dealer or somehow on Toyota's payroll. If ever there was class action material this is it.
      Toyota knew of the precipitous engine failure burning issue from corporate on down and covered it up. The extant "service bulletin" is the smoking gun and tells the tale.

This is much more about right and wrong and Rick I believe you know it. But if a class action is what it takes, Toyota and the dealers will bear the brunt of it and so it goes.

      if you follow the link in the OCC video, you can order one to be printed (I used ABS as it should be more heat resistant than Nylon or typical 3D print plastic). About $10, $14 for 2, shipped. Waiting for mine to come (2 weeks).

My mechanic told me two things about the my prius 2011, No 1: Not to open car bonnet once engine is running as it has lot of electric power and someone may get electric shock and No 2, it engine must not be washed with hose pipe pressure water. is this correct and should i follow the tips???
