wow you gave me an idea just now! what if instead of a pile of coals i put some small, like 3/4 fist sized volcanic rocks in a pan, and just drip oil on them? i mean, then the rocks would form cracks and crevices through which air would come so no need to have a wick. secondly, as they heat up, they radiate heat and help the oil ignite...
Btw. you have an ingeniously simple and effective design - i will remember it! :)

I like your heat exchanger.. I have an old Fisher stove.. I did the same thing to mine.. And I put a false back on the back of it, and run forced air into it to blow through the boiler tubing.. I love it..

I lite my woodstove with cooking oil on a paper towel when i don't have twigs handy. Even sawdust with a squirt of cooking oil works great. I have a vogalzang with the removable top plates. Thinking about constructing a new plate with a drip tube... great video as now i know i can.

Kevin Robinson I was just sitting here thinking. The tube could be made from a copper tube and from the tank to the stove you could make a worm that would go around the stove pipe to preheat the oil

Best set up so far. I am working on one at this time that burns solid and fluid (oil) and heats up above a chamber (pizza oven) and the hot air goes thru a 35 gall water heater tank and then it vents outside. The burn chamber and oven and water tank are all encased in brick and sand liner and flat top covered with red clay tile. Hope it will work great.

If you add a dirt leg on your oil supply tank all your particles will settle to the bottom of the leg & keep your needle valve from clogging.

Do you have to use anything special for where the oil drips out so the tip of your pipe doesn't melt off ? And do you ever have a problem with it trying to back burn on ya ?

I like the way you think mate, having the oil above the stove / heater is a great idea. I can't quote the flashpoint of sump oil but it would be bloody high, it'd be as safe as it gets. My question is how much longer do you reckon the wood lasts ??

    • @Robinson-Homestead

Not sure some times it will burn with out wood in it after it gets hot.

    QUESTION PLEASE:
    * I'm not an expert with waste oils like you are so my question is regarding the "oil drip line" DIRECTLY over the "top" of the wood stove burner:
    * As you showed in your video, the point where the oil is dripping out is actually on fire (with the flame showing)... so is there any danger or worry about that flame going up the metal tube to the rest of the oil in your tank mounted in the back?
    * Or, is it because the oil needs very high temperatures (inside the wood stove) to ignite, you don't have to worry about the flame going up the metal tube to the container?
    Most Appreciated!
    Amen

It needs oxygen to go up the pipe. Dunno what happens when you run out of oil. If you put a pigtail trap in the oil pipe sld fix it.

Kevin, I looked at a bunch of videos burning waste oil. Yours is by far the best for my shop.
yours is simple, easy to build, easy to maintain and in my opinion the drip you are using is perfect. The only thing i would do differently is maybe a slightly larger tank and some type of separator for water but that may not even be needed.
thanks so much for simple simple design. how long did you say the tank lasts its like 2 or 2 1/2 gallons. I just threw a tank like that away. Any other ideas for a cheap slightly larger tank.

    • @Robinson-Homestead

I'm gonna do something similar to my wood burner in my shop this year. I also have used vegetable oil that my wife uses to fry and cook with. I have about 5 gals of the stuff at the moment, plus waste motor oil. Couple of questions, what do you strain the oil through? Does synthetic oil burn as well?

I knew a mechanic back in the seventies that did that except his drip actually fell from maybe a foot or two above through the hole. Either way I think it's a fine and simple way. No air compressor needed.

Hi Kevin, you mentioned you moved the hole back four inches for the oil supply line. I would like to know why you did it. Was the stove smoking or something? I like your ideas because if you're out of oil you can always use wood. Call it flexi fuel! Great video I enjoyed it and have the confidence now to move forward on my own shop heater. Nothing like a warm shop. Thank-you.

Kevin ; What if you used a pressurized oil tank ? You could set your tank anywhere and regulate the oil flow with pressure . It wouldn't matter if the oil was hot or cold . Just a thought !!!!!!!!!!!!----------------------------------------------------------------------------Ernest E. Johnson
