- f150 shift indicator FIX 2000, F 150. This Ford F150 came in beacaue the indicator was not reading that it was in the correct gear . There are a few things that can cause the shift indicator to read correct. Dorman 83244 Auto Transmission Shift Indicator Bracket is the part on this Ford F150 that was broke. Auto Transmission Shift Indicator has an adjustment under the steering column . The plastic Auto Transmission Shift Indicator bracket had broke . This is a 2000 F150 , but the same for a lot of years and some ford cars. Ford or Lincoln cars with Auto Transmission Shift Indicator not reading right could have this same issue. Thank you sir my uncle was trying to kill me for this little piece you know how old truck and uncles go always over heating for small things
Thank you for the info and part number. Just fixed it on my 2001 Ranger.
$12 fix.....unless you count the chiropractor visit i plan trying to contort myself under the dashboard...
lol , yea i know the feeling . A lot of times i use a little bench or a board and something to sit it on . Put it outside by door and lay on that so i am laying flatter and not hanging down . they also make a device to do that . maybe i will make a video showing how i do it
Great video. Appreciate the advice on the two bolts up in there, both were loose and the truck shifts a lot better now.
The time and money I saved fixing this myself was well worth it. Took me about an hour start to finish. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Truck is back in business.
Glad you are back up and running .
Had the same problem thank you for your help and they do sell an aluminum one for 13 dollars on Amazon that takes place of the white plastic piece finally
Did this problem prevent your truck from turning on ?
@@ffffffffffffffstt It did not prevent my truck from starting. It prevented me from understanding where I was in relationship to shifting.
Good to see you post again. This will surely help a lot of people.
Just back to getting around ,so should be more videos soon .
Thank you bud your video was very detailed and helpful.I currently have the same problem right now and you just save me a trip to the dealership.
Glad it helped
So helpful! Thank you for taking the time to record and post.
Glad it was helpful!
Good work and good advice WTBM!!
Good to see a vidja from ya too!!
*Have a good'nnn*
Thanks for stopping by , hope all is well with you guys
God bless you. '99 F150 wouldn't turn over. Was checking battery, starter, cables, connections, fuses. Turned out to be the neutral safety switch, which was kicking in because shifter wasn't fully in park. Tightened up those two idiot bolts, slid it into park, and away she went. Dialed in my indicator while I was at it. Was able to do it without removing dash panels too! Couldn't have done it without you. Salut!
Thanks for watching and commenting
Well done. I did this 2 days ago, I did not know how to remove steering column plates, found lower cover bolts and removed them, then dove under. Great work on the shifter tightening! This is very important, while under the wheel jiggle the wheel to see the 2 bolts, if loose, even if bolts/screws feel tight torque em! Made a Huge difference. It took me 2 hrs, but now can I dial in shifter and this makes a huge difference for driveability for these old trucks, the transmission, etc. Too bad Ford cannot, or did not figure out a stronger tiny clip over plastic part w a bolt, cable, pulley, get rid of the plastic, thing more block and chain w pulley.
Glad you got it sorted out , Sounds like you did it right .
Amazon sells a metal bracket same price
Excellent video. Truck would not start in park and I had to start in nuetral, last night the truck stopped going into park and started to roll away on me. This video showed me both problems, clip is broke and on the way, the 2 screws were quite loose and a simple tightening of them without needing to remove the dash has it shifting again and no problem going into park. Ill finish the indicator bracket when the part comes in. Thanbk you so much for the perfectly clear video and taking your time to share it. Jim
Thank you for watching and commenting . Glad you are getting it all sorted out .
Nice work Mr. T!
Thank you
Tx for making this video. Just finished solving my issue!
Glad it helped
Excellent, I broke mine the other day after putting a remanufactured engine in and messed with the dashboard cluster wiring in my 2003. It's the exact same part number, thanks for that. In stock at Autozone, too. lol
Nice work!
Thanks for this video. The torx on my shifter bracket were surprisingly loose.
Yea a lot of them come loose . Glad you caught it and tightened them up . Thanks for stopping by and commenting
Thanks for the info. This will be a big help.
Pretty easy , but a common issue .
Mine was broken also 230K mi. Just put the nut on other side of plastic. Also had broken loop. used a bread tie to RE-MacGuiver it. Great video showed how it is supposed to work

Thanks for the video. This worked perfectly and my gear shift indicator is working correctly
Thanks for stopping by and commenting
thanks for the video! if you don't wanna spend money or fix it temporarily you can pull back on the cable housing and put a zip tie around the cable to take up the extra slack to bring the shift indicator back into alignment also.
Thanks for the info!
Excellent video; this was a huge help. Dorman should have made this part with metal so it is fixed for good like they do with the blend door end for the HVAC system.
Right on
they sell it online in metal don't waste your time with another plastic one
Thanks for this. Found out my cable was broken, so I don't know what I'm in for on the other end of that.
I do not remember what it looks like , but one can drop the steering column down if needed.
I have the same problem. The black screw plastic that goes through the thumb wheel is cracked and I will need to replace the cable as well and I suppose the selector in the cluster is there any videos for this
Thank you Sir. Much appreciated
You are very welcome
Nice fix. That truck looks in a lot better shape than the rust belt trucks.
It has some rust under it , but not bad for the age .
Thanks for the info.
You bet!
Thank you for the help
Happy to help
Thankyou it is help a lot 👍🏼👍🏼
Glad it helped
Great video a lot of help. I found a metal one on Amazon so never again
Great to hear!
how about adding the p/n? that would be the most beneficial.
Here ya go!! this will be my 2nd time and hopefullylast to change this out! APPERFiT B0993GQXQ3 & only 0.84 CENTS more than plastic version !!
Where did you buy the new bracket at? Also great video its the same problem i have and now i know how to fix it. Many thanks.
They have it Autozone, Advance...amazon. Avg like $12
i think i put the part number in there , but most any parts store should have it or can get it . i know Amazon should have it also
Thank you
You're welcome
Thank y y have been alot of help is it any way to rest the computer for the Transmission mine just stopped pulling all at once innnn all gears y can take the battery cable off an than put it back on an than it will pull for a little untill y hit the brake an than it goes to nural if can up let me no
it sounds like it reset when battery was unhooked . Really need it hooked up to a scanner and see the live data , to really understand what is going on .
I stell havent found out why it does that let me no if y fine out too thanks Johnny
Could you imagine the fake metal breaking as you tighten one of those t 30s , I barely tightened her then kaboom clank, just be careful and gentle retightening these screws
The new terminals they use any more are not as good as the old real terminals were
5.5mm socket fit on the hex head nut for my 99 explorer (gen 2) if you are replacing the part get the metal version which is available on amazon and you won't have to worry about it happening again
Thanks for stopping by and commenting
Do you know if this will fit a 2001 excursion? Thanks
I can not say for sure , but it very well could be . Best to look it up for your vehicle to be sure . Give the parts store this part number and they can check to be sure it is the same or not . Thanks for stopping in .
Tight quarters but you got some decent camera views to see what’s going on under the dash
Getting back up was the hardest part . Hope all is well up your way
Mines broke. But will this cause the shifter to be hard to shift out of park and shift weird going to desired gear?
Probably not , but check the two bolts i show in video . that like to come loose and cause issues . Usually can just tighten them up. I am pretty sure i show them.
@@wtbm123 Thank you
Hey my 98 Ford F-250 truck has this misalignment issue but it's not the cable. My cable is fine and I can twist it and it'll move but it's not the cause of my problem.
What else can it be? Is there something in the engine bay that needs to be adjusted or do you know other causes?
Thanks
This was not the cable either , it was the clip holding the cable . but if clip is not broken try adjusting with the little wheel . if that does not work , check for the loose bolts on steering column . Would be my first thoughts
right off hand i can not remember if the 98 f250 has the same set up
Ya the wheel is fine and the cable looks fine. I can twist the wheel and it'll move the indicator but it doesn't change the fact that it will show the incorrect gear when I shift. It'll just change how far off it'll be.
It's off to where I can't actually shift in first gear. When I'm in 2 it'll show 1 and I can't go further to put it in 1.
I checked the steering column for the bolts thing before and it looks nice and tight. The actual shifter doesn't feel super loose either. I've seen other trucks where it was wobbly and messed up and it's not like that.
Someone told me to look by the transmission at the linkage but I wasn't able to spot it. I can see the engine.. but I didn't see the transmission from up top the engine bay, maybe it's underneath or something.
When doing this do we put the parking brake
If you are on unlevel ground it may be a good idea to set brake or block the wheels
Will this bracket fit a 96 Ford f150
I am not sure ,
picture at ~1:50 is worth 1000. thx!

Thanks for sharing buddy. Some how I got unsub'ed from you. I'm back my friend!
Thanks for stopping by .
@Wtbm123 what’s the Dorman part number on that?
I am not sure . but if you go to the Dorman web site and look for Dorman 83244 , that may be it ,
@@wtbm123 thank you. I got one ordered today.
may also look at , APPERFiT Automatic Transmission Shift Indicator Cable Bracket (METAL) Replaces 83244
Fixed mine with a magic zip tie lol
Nice video, but I’d be more concerned about getting some new seat covers…
I will pass that on to the owner . lol Thanks for stopping in and commenting
What size socket for the bracket?
thinking 7 mm or was it smaller like a 5mm . but do not remember now
@@wtbm123 yeah I got it. Think it was a 6mm
@@chriscars3224 no it was 5.5mm for me on the explorer though. Definitely not 5 or 6
Looks like a nice easy adjustment, shame it's plastic though, only lasted 19 years ha ha :-D.
My silly mind :-D
LOL only 19 years , if new one last that long it may be all that is left . lol
Hello what is the part number for that??
I thought i put it in the video
I would like the part number I cannot seen to find the one I need
The part number is in the video and in the description
@@wtbm123 yep i seen that i was on a tablet and could not get it to pull down bu then i figured it out thanks for your hep thought
Just buy the metal replacement one, that’s what I did with my ‘99 Ranger.
Thanks for sharing
I'ma try to 3d print that thing lol
Nice
I have a 2001 F-150 and I'm getting really sick of all these plastic pieces everywhere shattering to bits. Anyone here have their rear half doors get stuck shut?
may be the latches
That's a simpler system than I thought.
Pretty easy fix , hardest part is getting back up from under the dash . lol
Well that was easy enough.
Yea pretty easy and cheap . Wish they were all so easy
my 1st hoopie.... lol
Cool
That wasn't a bad fix.
Hardest part is getting back up after laying under there . lol
Lol
Ugh make it look easy
Couldn't get my kick plate all the way off because of the ebrake and hood handles.
AND I can't contort 🥨🥨 myself to get under there 😣
It is hard to get in under there . Sometimes i put a board on the car floor and then put the other end of board on a chair, a stool or something and lay on the board . if that makes sense
