  • If you think your Nissan LSD is good, you're wrong. In this episode I make my way to Jonesy's workshop to install a Harrop eLocker into the rear diff of Harriss' GU Patrol.

      @timmyhasheart probably a bit of a nooby question. When it comes to ratios, is it just one locker fits all?

    • @timmyhasheart
      @timmyhasheart  Рік тому +1

      With patrols it is mate! The only thing that changes is some patrol rears have a different spline but ratio doesn’t matter.
      BUT - some IFS cars have a different locker depending on your ratio in the front, I know my navara one did back in the day. Harrop have a PDF online if you’re unsure

    • @trickster8635
      @trickster8635 Рік тому

      It's not technical, but if you get bearing pre-load wrong, they will fail early. Won't fail overnight, but will eventually and usually takes out the gear set as well, due to tooth pattern wear that cannot be undone. Any backyarder can and do slap them together, but you never see the diff after another 40K kms, when it needs a complete rebuild. Never hear about the phuck-ups.

    • @timmyhasheart

      @@trickster8635 bearing preload is actually pretty forgivable on the tighter side, especially in a diff that’s oil bathed, rather than greased. And I’m not doing it for customers, I did mine and a few mates. And I’ll also say mines been in for years from Tassie to cape York and back and a lot of tough tracks and water in between and still going strong. 👍🏻

      @@jmac822 and people that have clearly seen one fella on UA-cam make out all these huge issues with e lockers that you just don’t see really as long as they’re electrically sound. Mine is twin locked when I expect it to be, no two ways around it.
      However I will say that I don’t recommend one locker over another, each to their own I got ELocker because I tried air lockers in my last car, wanted to try something new, and I also had no other need for onboard air so didn’t want to add air when I already had 12v. Lastly - I don’t claim to be a mechanic, I wouldn’t work professionally on peoples cars, they’re close mates and I’m here for every one of them that needs me or if they have issues.

    Them harrops actually disingauge when you stop and takes half a wheel rotation to lock back in when you take off so they hate clutch drops like that . But still cool 😂

    • @timmyhasheart
      @timmyhasheart  Рік тому +2

      Yeah that actually isn’t true aye haha. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard that but I’m still yet to have it happen after a couple of years using them, the only way the pins would roll back to a previous dog is if you had no torque bound up in the driveline, opposing wheels is enough torque to hold them in their current dog. If you know how driveline works this will make sense, but yeah never had an issue, and only heard it from people that have never had them.

    • @tomwhelan7901
      @tomwhelan7901 Рік тому +1

      Either way they shit all over an air locker I'll never have another after having the harrop

    • @trickster8635
      @trickster8635 Рік тому

      Even Harrop admit that they are designed to dis-engage with change of direction. Usually not a problem if axle wind-up is loading the dog ring. But, IF it's not and you drop the clutch, you risk having one axle spinning fast and the dog trying to engage. Big no no for any type of diff lock.

    • @timmyhasheart
      @timmyhasheart  Рік тому +1

      @@trickster8635 never, ever, ever seen it happen in the real world aye. On rocks they stay locked in my experience thanks to torsion binding it all up in the current dog. And in the mud I’ve only ever seen all 4 spinning, that goes for my car, the 2 other cars I’ve installed or helped install them in, and Tyler’s car which is also e locked. I understand the way they work, I understand that on a hoist or in a lab it will take 1/3 turn to lock the wheel, and 2/3 turn to relock in a direction change, thanks to the 3 possible pin ramp locations, but it just doesn’t happen in the real world dude, they’re the e locker in all OEM applications across the planet.. the only issue I have ever had was my own installer error and had a fucky connection in the relay which meant it was intermittently disengaging and burred the engagement dog, I’ve since had the entire locker out and apart and put a new dog in, and for that reason I understand how they work inside and out, I’m not sponsored by them or owe them anything, I’m not even saying get one, stick to air if you want air.. I’m simply saying people say a lot of words without a whole lot of understanding of what’s actually gone on.. the relay that comes with them is hopeless so I run my own loom but I reckon that could also account for some other peoples issues who knows. But you’re welcome to watch videos of my car on the channel or Tyler’s, all 4 spin and that’s fully e locked. 👍🏻

  • @trickster8635
    @trickster8635 Рік тому

    What a pity it's an Eaton-Harrop e-breaker! Take a look at the small diameter carrier or hemisphere. Much smaller than the stock large Powerlock LSD hemisphere. Small carrier means small side gears and bevel pinions, which are transferring all of the torque when NOT locked, ie 99% of the time. Compounding the issue is the small bevel pinion shafts which are only 16mm diameter and making matters worse, is the three-piece cross shafts which are inherently weaker than a one-piece forged unit. It also has a weaker locking ring that are prone to breaking in half. If you want visual proof, take a view of Neville McNamara Differentials you-tube, he does an in depth expose' of the inner weaknesses of this differential.

    • @timmyhasheart
      @timmyhasheart  Рік тому

      Yes yes yes mate all very good, never broken one or seen one break, and yes yes yes seen the McNamara (now pro locker) before and heard a lot about them but, never run one personally so won’t comment how ever I chose ELocker for my own car also. Cheers for the comment. 👍🏻

      I set backlash religiously with a dial, as for pre load I mean I know how to do wheel bearings and king pins by feel, so I mean I just use the same principle, snug it up so there is a tiny bit of drag with no play and that’s it 👍🏻

      The diffs you have phucked-up, won't return for 20 to 30K's later. Incorrect pre-load and/or back lash does not become apparent overnight. Pinion bearing pre-load (toe and heel) are the main offenders after some dude has changed a drive flange.

      Ahh look everyone has their prefs.. I like the feel and trust in an air locker, that when I hear that air I know it’s game on, but I also hate having a full air system on board and I had air leak trouble and what not, but I’ve also ripped 12v wires out of an elocker too so it’s just whatever you’re after at the end of the day, I won’t say one is definitively better then another
