When Johnny Cash played this for his daughter she said “It sounds like you’re saying goodbye”, and he told her “I am”. Such a beautiful, heartbreaking song.
He intentionally waited until his health was declining to record this. After the pneumonia that started his decline the amount of time he could sing was greatly curtailed. He waited until singing hurt would put a strain on him to convey it was the end to everyone who heard it. If you listen to other songs first you can hear him strain and struggle to make it through this.
This song was made and written by Nine Inch Nails. The leader singer made this song about a middle aged mans life spiraling out of control and losing the ones around him due to death and drugs/ overdoses'. Johnny Cash took the song changed one word and made it about and old man looking back on his life losing those around him due to age and what year to year can do to a friendship. Nine Inch Nails lead singer wasn't happy about this because the song was soooo personal to him. Once he heard the song he said, "this is now cash's song". Cash is the ONLY person in the Country Hall of Fame, Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, AND the Songwriters Hallo of Fame. You could literally write a Harry Potter 10 book story about this man's life and still have chapters left out... During this song his wife passed away. His daughter told him that this song sounds like he is saying goodbye... Johnny replied, "I am saying goodbye; I miss my June (wife June Carter)". Johnny passed away like 4 months after releasing this song.... RIP Legend.
Neither Johnny Cash nor Trent Reznor were keen to the idea, before recording it. Rick Rubin (who produced the album this cover is on) brought the idea to both of them. Cash was more receptive, taking less time/convincing (of course, since recording comes prior to hearing final product)
The interview with Trent Reznor (lead singer of Nine Inch Nails) was really interesting. He was against remaking it because he just didn't think it would work. But when he heard the final cut he equated it a girlfriend being happier with another man. He just had to let go. The song was Cash's now.
The fact that he continues to touch people, young, old, white, black, Christian, atheist, male or female, is a testament to the man as a Legend. ❤ I love that you all appreciate this.
Johnny was 74, but was in constant pain from illness for the last 10 years of his life, thats why he looked so old. This song is a Nine Inch Nails song written by Trent Reznor, the lead singer. When he wrote it, he didn't know that it would end up being prophetic of his own life. He wasn't a junkie when he wrote and recorded it, but within 2 years he was. Johnny recorded this song about 2 years after Reznor got out of rehab. It was produced by a friend of Reznor"s. He was flattered that Johnny wanted to do it, but he felt weird about it when he heard the recording, becuase it was someone else singing about something that was so personal to him. A few weeks later he saw the music video ( a video that won numerous awards BTW) and said that he finally understood, and that the song was no longer his. Also in the video was his wife June Cater Cash, standing on the steps behind him. She died very very soon after the video was made, and Johnny followed 4 months later.
FACT: This video was made 7 months before Johnny Cash died. After his wife of 35 years died (June Cash), Johnny said he had nothing to live for except music after his wife died. You can feel it in this song. A once powerful man reduced to a shadow of himself waiting for death. This song was Johnny making his peace with the end.

He was basically a 3-chord guitar strummer with a cool voice, a ton of charisma, a lot of attitude and a fabulous life story. But one of the greatest musicians of all time? Johnny Cash's father, in a drunken state, once told him that he wished Johnny had died instead of his brother Jack. That was probably one of the reasons he was so messed up for a large part of his life.
this song is a testimony, even though it is a re-recording it shows the true feelings of a man who faced a difficult life regardless of the situation, johnny was a man who went through a lot and still did not abandon his beliefs and himself, he is a example of life
what about crying? it's an inherent characteristic of human beings, of caring about life.. whoever has the courage to laugh in happy moments and cry in sad moments is truly a hero.. "this world is a school" best way, all respect to him, and if you shed tears at that moment it's because you understand that, it's not a synonym of weakness but of emotional maturity
Same. I see it as a very egoic thing. It isn't about me. I can cry in private thinking, listening or seeing something. But I don't cry around people. That's something I overcome. In place of tears, I show composure.
@@franjamison77 Yea but the original writer and singer said it was his song now . And the fact it was a super personal song says even more . Don't think he sang the song since
The change in your faces once he started singing was so noticeable. And I think that is the power that Johnny Cash always possessed, but he didn't realize the gravity of it until old age.
Johnny Cash was iconic as a country singer, not acting. He is one of the most important artists in music history. Much of his music contained themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, and also included gospel . His wife June Carter Cash was a five-time Grammy award-winner, and was a member of the famous gospel-singing Carter family. Johnny Cash's music genre spanned across country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. His crossover appeal earned him the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. There's so much on Johnny Cash. This doesn't even scratch the surface. I've never been a big C&W music fan, but my generation grew up with Johnny Cash one way or another. He was a household name and was bigger than life. Thanks for this reaction guys! ✌💙✌
He's also in the Rockabilly, Memphis Music, and Nashville Song Writer's halls of fame. He's received the Kennedy Center honors, National Medal of Arts, along with CMA, VMA, Grammy's, and many other awards. All well deserved.
The end of this video shows a definite finality to his career and eventually his life. The way he closed the lid to the piano and then ran his hands along the lid was his good-bye to music and the world. RIP Mr Cash... goat
This song (both versions) astonished me. How the same lyrics can have vastly different messages. Kudos to Trent. He wrote a song that made a legend notice it.
The part when he says "You could have it all. My empire of dirt." brings me to tears every time. They show his awards, his records, all of his achievements and accomplishments, he sits at a table in a throne with a feast in front of him, representing all of the things he accomplished in his life, the wealth he accumulated, and he's literally saying, mostly to his late wife, that he would give it all up if he could just have more time with her. He struggled heavily with alchohol addiction throughout his life, so it hits even harder as you see his trembling hand pour the wine out across the table. He's acknowledging all the people he hurt in his life, the way his alchoholism destroyed his life and the lives of everyone around him, and in the end he says "If I could start again, a million miles away. I would keep myself, I would find a way." Everything he's done, all the art he's made, all the awards, the movies, the records, the fame, the fortune, it's all dirt. It's meaningless. He would give it all away if he could just do it all over again, but he can't.
Cool story IF HE WROTE THIS SONG. Werid wonder why a COVER turns out to be all this epic retelling his life. Why couldn’t he just write his own song waxing lyrical about the 💩his life was. He had a hard life but was a damn superstar legend. I had a HARDER life then him, all I get is JUDGEMENTS from most people….but hey his life was sooooooo hard, poor him….boo hooo…..all that money praise and all else….. Why does everyone act like his life was destroyed cuz of it? How? His wife was with him to the end, his kids etc…. PLEASE give me his hard life….😂🤣🤧

This song was originally written by and performed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails it was biographical and dealt with his struggles-namely drug addiction. But it is so relatable and could be applied to anyone who struggles with a life of regret. Johnny did a cover of it. This was his last release before he passed away. He was a Christian and he performed the song exactly as written except one verse. He changed it from "crown of s***" to "crown of thorns". P. S. As Christians we believe we will be united with our loved ones after death so we would not want to live forever in this life but forever in the life to come, absolutely!
Trent wasn't an addict when he wrote it actually. it was a prophetic song, rather than biographical, because with 2 years after writing it, he was an addict.
After Trent heard Johnny's cover. He officially said the song belongs to Johnny now. That it was no longer a cover of his song and that if he (Trent) were to perform it, that, would be the cover.
This was his goodbye. Johnny Cash is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. His wife passed shortly after recording this and he passed away about 6 months later. To know more about him, check out his song, The Man in Black
After Trent Reznor (nine inch nails) heard Cash's rendition of his song, he remarked, "that's not my song any more." It fits Cash in that he struggled endlessly with heroin addiction, and his wife June stood by him through all of it.
The Nine Inch Nails song was done in the 90's and is totally different. When Trent Reznor, who is NIN lead singer and writer of the song, heard Johnny's version he said it's Cash's song now. He embodied the lyrics in a completely different way. Great interview about how Rick Rubin had Johnny perform many other modern artists. I recommend Johnny's version of Personal Jesus originally written & performed by Depeche Mode. Thanks for all your videos.
I love this song. Trent Reznor wrote a beautiful song but Johnny made it epic! After watching Walk The Line, I just wept for the life he lived. He was truly an artist. May he rest in peace.
"Walk the the Line" was one his signature songs as well as title for biography movie. Movie had Reese Weatherspoon & Joaquin Phoenix in it. Definitely worth checking both out
Was ONLY into hip-hop when the movie came out and saw it with a fam member in theater. That movie was such a success, it's what started the "High Budget Biopic" trend in the past decade or so... Before that, Biopics were made for TV movies but that movie basically created a new genre for the box office (IMO) It was so popular they made that comedy parody "Walk Hard" with John C Reilly.
Cash took this song and transformed it into a song of regret... he was strong enough to say "I am not who you thought I was" he is singing his own dispair.
There will never be anyone compared to 'The Man in Black,' Mr Cash. He lived a life like no other. My Dad, who I lost 13 years ago, was a great fan of Johnny, so I grew up listening to him. My Dad was not a musician, but he was rugged, lived through a horrific childhood, survived the Korean War, and was my hero. Johnny's songs bring back so many great memories, and at the same time, sooths my soul. I'm so happy you chose to listen to him!
They would really like that one, too. Totally agree! Have been subscribed to this group of excellent young men for just a few months, but have watched dozens of past reactions that they've done & they simply comprise one of the best reaction sources on UA-cam - which says a lot, because the entire "reaction" concept has ballooned over the past 3+ years & spawned hundreds of channels. I rank these gentlemen somewhere in my Top 5, & I estimate that I've checked out, AT LEAST, 150 reactors over the last couple of years. And so being in my Top 5 amongst 150+, who I gave a sincere effort to like, says it all. Appreciate you guys! I'm 65, an Army vet, an amputee (entire right leg) - amongst other serious health conditions - and you are a part of almost each day that I live. Bless you guys & keep kicking ass. ✌&❤4🌏
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. The t.v. was on in another room while I was doing my hair in the bathroom. I was actually late for work, but when Johnny started singing this song, I ran into the other room to watch this video. I was absolutely mesmerized 😮 I really didn't have time to be standing there, but it was like I couldn't move until Johnny was finished singing
This song is about regret. Johnny Cash was one of the "wild men" in country music. He wore black for those who were in prison. So many of his early songs were great "Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire. I love his video (later one) "God's gonna cut you down". Keep up the great work! You guys do a great job!
His wife June on the stairs, she wasn't supposed to be in this video but came downstairs out of concern for him as he was terminally ill, that look on her face is genuine so they left it in. Cash is beyond legend, 100 lifetimes of pain shown on that face, none of us could survive 10% of what he went through but he was his own worst enemy but found redemption anyway. He was an original rock and roll artist from the 50's and he's right up there with Elvis, Chuck Berry and the rest. It's my good fortune I saw him and his wife perform close up back in 1980 and I still remember being so awestruck I couldn't believe it. For a look in how this song happened on here, do a search for HURT-BEHIND THE SCENE.
I don't listen to country but I always listen to Johnny Cash. He is legendary. He had more in common with you and me than any other artist or celebrity or politician or rich man. He sang our struggles. Hell, he even sang /did a concert for the prisoners at Folsom Prison. Legend! His cover of "Hurt" is beyond compare!!!
Was never a Cash fan but the passion he put into this song was amazing. I felt his life, his pains, i felt him slipping away. He truly made this his song and Trent Reznor, who wrote it, gave it to him with grace
Johnny's life started off very tragic and ended tragic. I highly suggest truly digging into this man's life. You could spend years still uncovering even more aspects of his life. Even his friendship with Elvis (which is how he stumbled across drugs himself and had a huge battle beating that addiction). You can't hear this song and not hear the pain and cry for him.
Johnny Cash had a distinct sound. He was one of the first country music artists that broke many barriers. He performed with Ray Charles, unheard of at the time. His life was on a downward spiral until he met June Carter. She was the love of his life. He had so many hits over the course of his life. He was a legend.
Johnny Cash ‘The Man In Black’ is one of the most gifted and celebrated country music artists of all time. He and the legendary Glen Campbell are my personal absolute favorite country music artists. … Johnny Cash’s wife, June Carter, wrote a love song for/about him called Ring of Fire 🔥 and Johnny Cash sang it. It is widely considered one of the greatest country songs ever. … it’s worth a listen. 📻🎶🎵🖤
I am 40 years old. I watched 100s of reactors watch this video and everytime I watch because this song is amazing. This song makes me cry everytime. I cried this time aswell. Life relections and reflections on regret is this song wrapped in a bow. Trent really did an amazing job writing this song and Johnny killed singing it. Both different versions are amazing.
He made you have a conversation. That in and of itself is how powerful he was as a entertainer. Johnny took his rendition of this song and made it about his life. Not many can do something so powerful. You guys are a treasure. Thank you for objectively listening to music and offering your honest feelings about it. It’s refreshing
I love seeing how Johnny Cash affects people. He crosses genre's, age groups and will forever live on! The Stephanie wasn't his last song though he recorded 72 songs after his wife passed away before his own death. Thanks for this video!
Not sure anyone will read because I’m late but… THIS SONG IS INCREDIBLE!! The way he presents the internal struggle of having it all at one point in time and reflecting about how he would give it ALL away to never lose himself. Lots of people have made songs about this but Johnny’s hits different because of how old he was when he performed it. He ACTUALLY had the ability to reflect and really felt deep in a hole because he knows IF he could go back and “keep myself” he would find a way. But the hard truth is he cannot, you cannot, I cannot, NOBODY can. So it’s best we take advantage of life and the opportunity God has given us before it’s too late and all we have is ourselves and our regrets!
As a young girl I remember seeing my parents dancing to Johnny Cash music in our living room. My husband and I both loved Johnny Cash music. He's legend, for sure.
Johnny Cash went to my home church back at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, TN. A lot of country singers were there too. One of the most talented musicians out there.
The longer you live, the harder this song hits you. Wealth, fame - it's all an illusion. The things that really matter to you are the people you grow up and die with.
This is one of those songs that when you listen to as you get older, it WILL break you. And even though it came out years before, it makes the movie Logan all that more saddening.
I had a bet with a buddy of mine. African American guy, grew up in Compton relocated to where I live now. He had been rapping his whole life. In and out of jail, real badass. We had a bet on a Bball game, I won. I made him listen to this song because he had never heard of John Cash. By the time it was over he was crying his eyes out, like waterfalls of tears. This video will break ANYONE. RIP Mr Cash
So cool to see these young men moved by Cash. Life goes by fast, I am in my mid 50s and feel like I as a kid a few years ago. Go after your dreams everyone. There does come a time we all get older and have regrets.
Johnny was THE MAN. Not afraid to try different musical styles. He had a bad problem with drinking and pills, his 2nd wife June Carter and her family helped him get clean and gk on for many more decades sober. Listen to his beautuful duet "I Miss Someone" with his daughter Roseanne Cash...fantastic.
Trent Reznor talks about the fact that while he wrote this song, it really belongs to Johnny Cash now. An all-time baller move by Reznor to respect a legend like that. Still, Reznor's version is a classic in its own right. Give the live version a listen if you get a chance.
Props to Trent Reznor for writing and performing this song. Also, props to Trent for realizing when Johnny covered it, it was no longer his song. It was Johnny's.
You gotta get into Cash and read his book . This man had a hell of a life. That's why this song and video are so emotional. His house is a museum. The shack in the video is his home where his brother died. He did so much for the prison community and became a Christian but was shunned by them. He tried to commit suicide He did drugs so much, this guy is worth so much credit. Never mind his work!
Ya'll make me proud as retired educator. I love watching your reactions and your interactions with each other as topics are discussed and debated. The greatest joy, is the maturation of each one of you, as you try to put everything into context; in terms of history, styles and influences. School is not about grades or degrees, it is about about developing a lifetime of curiosity and the ability to keep learning throughout life. Keep up the great work!
I don't like country music, but I love to hear Johnny Cash sing this song. Every time I hear this, I cry because you can hear and feel all the feel all of his emotions while he is singing.
He had one more song he wrote just before his death. However, he died before they could complete the video. So out of respect, several celebrities, artists and singers helped finish the video. It's called "God's gonna cut you down" and it's worth seeing. Also, "Man in Black" and "A boy named Sue" are really great songs. The last one is best live and is from when he went to play at Folsom Prison I believe, might've been San Quentin.
This video hits like a punch to the gut. It hits even harder when you know the man's music and life story. I love what you guys do. Seeing young men of today being moved emotionally by the music of my youth is a great pleasure. You bring a lot of good sense to the table. All the best to you.

what about crying? it's an inherent characteristic of human beings, of caring about life.. whoever has the courage to laugh in happy moments and cry in sad moments is truly a hero.. "this world is a school" best way, all respect to him, and if you shed tears at that moment it's because you understand that, it's not a synonym of weakness but of emotional maturity
It's this last part from 6:15 that gets me every single time!
When Hurt comes on EVERYBODY HURTS.
Same. I see it as a very egoic thing. It isn't about me. I can cry in private thinking, listening or seeing something. But I don't cry around people. That's something I overcome. In place of tears, I show composure.
Johnny Cash definitely had a lot going on in his life.... he even made a live album at Folsom Prison
He has a song about folsom to. He did have a 'live at San Quentin' album to. A show he did for the prisoners there.
I hear that train a coming, Coming round the bend. I ain't seen my baby since I don't know when.
the movie Walk the Line with Joaquin Phoenix, did the Folsom prison scene justice. Got 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.
you're...saying that...like its not... very common knowledge....
CARTIERA FAMILA😊 0:17
Far and away the absolute best cover version of any song. Ever.
Rod Stewart's cover of First Cut is the Deepest by Cat Stevens is pretty good....

He was also an actor!😊
@@I_give_up_already - Yes, but that was not what he was famous for.
@@faithnyou1732 show me where I said it was🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
The end of this video shows a definite finality to his career and eventually his life.
I love both versions of this song. Hurt at different stages of life.
I love this version immensely but Trent at the Katrina fundraiser is pretty good too.
One is a young man speaking of his struggles the other is an old man with his regrets😢...both great though❤
@@staceyparks5717amen!
PLEASE give me his hard life….😂🤣🤧
@@6Haunted-Days The song could reflect your life as well.
Only heard this song about a thousand times. Still gives me goosebumps
I get tears in my eyes every single time I hear this. Love Johnny Cash. I grew up with him and I'm 70. He was a legend.
Who says our young people are shallow and unaware of what's important in life.
These young men will restore your faith our future will be prosperous!

Trent 100%
Trent wasn't an addict when he wrote it actually. it was a prophetic song, rather than biographical, because with 2 years after writing it, he was an addict.
After Trent heard Johnny's cover. He officially said the song belongs to Johnny now. That it was no longer a cover of his song and that if he (Trent) were to perform it, that, would be the cover.
The video makes this song. The interspersion of Cash’s video “Gospel Road” changes the author’s belief entirely.
After all this time I still can't listen to this song without shedding at least one tear
This song always makes me just bawl with emotion. Heartbreaking 💔
After Trent Reznor (nine inch nails) heard Cash's rendition of his song, he remarked, "that's not my song any more." It fits Cash in that he struggled endlessly with heroin addiction, and his wife June stood by him through all of it.
This.
Beautiful, heart breaking song written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Johnny Cash was a legend. This song says so much about Johnny's life. 💔
This song always gets to me. It's like his eulogy. The movie Walk the Like was a wonderful movie. The actor who played him did it justice
Joaquin Phoenix is the actor, and he did all his own singing (as did actress Reese Witherspoon).
Rusty Cage by Soundgarden too!!
"A song is something that walks by itself" - Bob Dylan
Definitely agree, some covers are just made into something completely new.
I love this song. Trent Reznor wrote a beautiful song but Johnny made it epic! After watching Walk The Line, I just wept for the life he lived. He was truly an artist. May he rest in peace.
Thank you guys so much for showing this man the respect he deserves
Johnny sang some great gospel songs. His faith was important to him.
"Walk the the Line" was one his signature songs as well as title for biography movie. Movie had Reese Weatherspoon & Joaquin Phoenix in it. Definitely worth checking both out
Yep. Great song! Great movie! Walk the Line, Folsom Prison and Ring of Fire are my favorites!
Was ONLY into hip-hop when the movie came out and saw it with a fam member in theater. That movie was such a success, it's what started the "High Budget Biopic" trend in the past decade or so... Before that, Biopics were made for TV movies but that movie basically created a new genre for the box office (IMO)
It was so popular they made that comedy parody "Walk Hard" with John C Reilly.
Awesome movie, and it's parody spoof Walk Hard is hilarious!
Cash took this song and transformed it into a song of regret... he was strong enough to say "I am not who you thought I was" he is singing his own dispair.
Yup, still can't listen to his version of this song without tearing up 😭
There will never be anyone compared to 'The Man in Black,' Mr
Cash.
Even near the end Cash had the "it" factor - there will NEVER be another Johnny Cash. RIP.
I highly recommend his song "God's Gonna Cut You Down"! The music video is amazing also!
100% this.

When the Man Comes Around
Most of the people in that video are narcissitic morons.
This song never fails to choke me up - the absolute look of heartbreak on his face is devastating.
Johnny Cash has such an incredible catalog of music. My personal favorites are God's Gonna Cut You Down and Folsom Prison Blues.
I love:
I'll Never Pick Cotton
When the Man Comes Around
Ring of Fire
Tears in the Holston River
And the two mentioned above.
As someone who has outlived people I wish were still here this song is emotional damage made into musical art. 😢
The hairs on my arms just stood straight. Such an emotional song 😢
There is only one Johnny Cash. He’s one of the most important performers of our lifetime.
Yes.
If you could live forever, the chance to spend your time wisely and to enjoy every day would be taken away…
That piano at the end...builds the tension and breaks my heart.
Cash is a Legend. One of the greatest music artists of all time.
Do his "A boy named sue ". Absolute classic.
Every single time I listen to that song it rips me up.
I am so touched by your emotion as you watch this. I can never watch him sing "Hurt" without crying.
Johnny cash is the king of blues
Makes me cry so powerful 😭
Johnny was a true legend…. The man in black 🖤 RIP King
❤❤❤
This song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it 😢
I love seeing how Johnny Cash affects people. He crosses genre's, age groups and will forever live on! The Stephanie wasn't his last song though he recorded 72 songs after his wife passed away before his own death. Thanks for this video!
This always makes me cry and I don’t own a single Johnny Cash album. Do like his music though
Not sure anyone will read because I’m late but…
THIS SONG IS INCREDIBLE!!
When death invites me in, I'll leave my regrets at the door.
This is a cover of a nine inch nails song btw
@@colby8181 yes.
What makes life special is the finite amount of time we have. Living forever would steal that from you.
Johnny's return to his childhood home is very touching.
So many Johnny Cash songs you can react to. Great talent!
I love Johnny Cash!!! 💗 His version of this song gives me chills n tears to my eyes, hurts a lil close to home... 🥺
He’s a better artist for sure. He is king in country music
I never get enough of you guys. I would like to give you a collective hug. You restore my faith in the youth.
Props to Trent Reznor for writing and performing this song. Also, props to Trent for realizing when Johnny covered it, it was no longer his song. It was Johnny's.
I wouldn't go that far
I cry every time i watch this video. Rip Johnny Cash.
When his daughter heard this , she said “dad, it sounds like you are saying goodbye “ he just smiled and said “ yes” 🐐
He wore black all the time because he said he identifies with the poor and downtrodden etc, he's a legend so cool you guys are open to so much!
Thank you for taking a moment to listen to the Man in Black.
He also played in Folsom Prison.
I have the original record given to me by my stepdad.
It has given me a great deal of pleasure to witness the broadening of genres that are being investigated.
Easily the greatest cover of all time and it will never be topped.
A voice so pure and haunting 60 years making people stop and listen
This video hits like a punch to the gut. It hits even harder when you know the man's music and life story. I love what you guys do. Seeing young men of today being moved emotionally by the music of my youth is a great pleasure. You bring a lot of good sense to the table. All the best to you.
He’s amazing! Country legend
