Dirt roads, desert sands, the ghost of a country-rock legend, and a motorcycle designed to mingle amongst them all. With the Yamaha SCR950 First Ride Review, Spurgeon set out to see what the latest edition to Yamaha’s “Sport Heritage” line of motorcycles was made of.
For more on the SCR950, as well as a bit of music trivia that you probably didn’t know, check out Spurgeon’s article in Common Tread highlighting his time with the bike in Joshua Tree, CA: www.revzilla.com/common-tread/...

Scrambler doesnt mean dirt bike or dual sport, scrambler means some dude took a road bike and did his best to go on the trails, and I think this bike does this perfectly... just my 2C
I agree with you. Fortnine did a great job making that point, in his review of the SCR950.
ROFL!! Exactly what I did to my old SR400.
a street bike that I purposely got stuck in deep mud.
It's for me, picked my two days ago up and I love it
Turn off the damn music already, couldn't hear the bike, barely hear the review.
I had an old 75 yamaha DT250 with the Orange tank that looks nearly identical. The ground clearance is a shame, but I will be buying this just for the nostalgic value of riding around on that old DT. Great review, and despite the downfalls, I'll be getting one and figuring out a couple extra inches of clearance, not a deal breaker for me. Now if I can find a replacement 75 DT250 to park next to it. I think the negative comments are basically from guys who don't understand what this bike is trying to replicate. Thanks!
You guys are absolutely killing it with these reviews. I can't wait to see more.
I love the retro style. Looks like my 1971 Yamaha I had when I was a kid.
I am 57 and have ridden since I was 16. I still own my Z1A that I bought when I was 17. basically ridden all my life. I bought one of these for what it is a rock solid all rounder. Fitted a more comfortable seat and essentially it does a fantastic job, I jump on it push the button off it goes and I can use it for a run into town or out in the hills taking in a few light trails, or stick my gear on the back and ride it for 500 miles. Bomb proof motor good ergonomics and low maintenance, how many modern bikes can you get these days as simple as this, its not that much more complicated than my Z1. Whats not to like in my opinion..... oh and its got classic looks and its dirt cheap
I like how you say this bike can't go out in the desert like Steve McQueen...except this is exactly the type of bike he did that on.
A lot of these comments are confusing me... it’s a 950 air cooled v-twin.. of course it’s heavy, of course it doesn’t have 10” of suspension travel, they have to keep that girth low because it’s a cruiser bike. Yamaha isn’t going after KTM or Husqvarna with this thing. It’s a UJM with “all terrain tires” don’t act surprised it’s terrible off road.
KUDOS: the person reviewing did an excellent job. Lots of info and communication skills: A+++
True, the styling suffers a bit but picture it with fenders and side covers painted to match the tank, smaller air filter ( one that looks less Harley-esque) and a muffler about 1/3 the size of the stock one. Now you've got something. As far as it being a true scrambler, well Honda sold millions of the CL350s and CL450s and they were just a street bike with high exhaust. I personally love it!
Who this bike is targeting: My dad. A dyed in the wool, 60 year old TT500 (580 with Wiseco piston & top end, thanyousoverymuch) flat tracker guy who wouldn't ride anything newer than 1989 even if you gave it to him for free. Good suspension? He's not having it. Good ergonomics? Fuck no, son. Good performance on the stock motor? Naw, I'll put the power into the plant myself.
Great video Spurge!
Great review
Thank you,,,, very helpful review.
I love cruisers but hate the way the seats on them. this bike is perfect
great review as always , thank you
Hmmm... Of the various scrambler-like bikes out there to choose from today, the Ducati, the Triumph, this, I would love to see a shoot out style review so we can see pros and cons in comparison to eachother. Great video! Keep up the the great work revzilla you really let your passion and dedication to quality show
The looks of the bike really caught my eye. Like you, I love the retro styling. Your VERY thorough review, however, has made me aware of some of it's downfalls, and I'll keep looking at other bikes. Like kmg501 said...."great review, stupid bike." As I continue to watch motorcycle reviews, I'm gonna look for yours! Great work!
I live in Japan does not have a release date. I think this is a great motorcycle. I think that the launch of this bike is the majority of Japanese want. Even though the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, it will not be released in Japan. It is a very sad event. Your video was great. I shed excitement of tears.
As a new rider, I'm glad I went for the Street Twin.
I love the silhouette of this bike.
nice review
Not for the desert....end of vid, heading into the desert 😂
I like this Bolt Scrambler, looks good, cost less than the other Scramblers. Has the looks, sounds pretty good. The air box cant be swapped with an after market one.
I may just buy one
Good Content you have ,Keep up the Good work," Revzilla is my fav channel in UA-cam" Great Reviews
Please do a review on the new Honda CB1000R and the CB1100EX... PLEASE... I want to hear lemmy talk about it before buying one.
Not sure who got the Grahm Parsons reference but this is the review to bury it in
Excellent looking bike, party on Wayne
@ revzilla.. Spurge, great review mate..cAn u guys do a comparison vid between the triumph street twin ,ducati scrambler and yamaha SCR 950? Thanks
Can you guys review the moto guzzi v7 ii stone. i hardly see any reviews in english and with the retro style really making a come back im wondering how they really are.
thats a sick bike
Thanks for the suggestion- I will pass that along to our video department. We definitely have more reviews in the pipeline, so stay tuned! The Guzzi is more of a rare bird over here, but oozes character with the unique engine configuration. -TeamZilla AJ
Its very under powered. You'll get bored of it very quick. Its unfortunate MG just does not make machines anymore that once was its racing hallmark.
We've actually got a Moto Guzzi Dealer here in Virginia. :D
or Roamer and Bobber
Getting this bike shortly.
Triumph Scrambler is still the best out there lol. I think the only other actual one worthy of going off road is the Ducati Scrambler but you still need some modifications.
I went to a Yamaha dealer today...they only had 4 Bolts...I want to sit on a SCR...then choose =)
Hey guys I don't know if you going to get this but you guys haven't done a review on a BMW GS 1200 and I would like to know what you guy think of this bike as I think is it a high contender in the adventure side of riding also the KTM 1090, I would like to know what you guys think of these bikes, thanks you guys are a bike help.
can u make a episode on making a cafe racer? cause I have a Yamaha maxim xj700x and would like to make it into a cafe racer
Form doesn't proscribe function. 550 pounds with 54lbs of torque and 48.5 horse power? Keep to the pavement, and realize this bike only 'looks' ready for off-road.
Thems evo softail numbers and a scrambler it aint
My cb550 puts up those numbers. Seems low for an engine that's just shy of a liter.
from what I can tell, that describes the scramblers of old pretty well.
Seating position looks comfy.
Are there any aftermarket parts for sale for the SCR950's dash? Because the stock dash looks absolutely horrendous.
With some customization, you may be able to use one of the following Motogadget gauges. -DrewZilla

2.8 inches of travel? That took it off my list, I’m looking at bikes I can drive through North AND South America...
That is one hell of a bike :*
must have very low standards
So, this is one is in the "miss" column for Yamaha. However, maybe they could learn from it and bring out a modern dual sport bike? I don't understand why we can't have a FI, 6XX CC thumber making at least 65 HP that weighs less than 375 wet. And is cheaper and more dependable than a KTM 690, almost forgot that part.
Do you guys think this bike will do fine on the freeway? I’m torn between getting this or a triumph bonneville 790cc or the Yamaha bolt 2015 c-spec (please help!)
Honestly, the regular bolt is a little more comfortable on the interstates, but both bikes will pretty easily handle cruising speeds up to about 80mph. Past that they taper off a bit. The air box setup on this one plus the peg position does make it a bit less comfortable (as was addressed in the video)
I sat on the cruiser version of this and I couldn't even lift it up straight, and my personal isn't actually light at over 200 kg! Well, unless there's a different way to straighten cruisers that I don't know about.
Will it be ok for 5’7’’ guy or seat height is too high?
klr 650 review?!
Watch fortnine's review, he is spot on, some tend to miss the idea of this bike, no one thinks this is a paris dakar rep, but like the original scramblers from days of yore ( 70's probably!) its spot on!!
It's the two wheeled version of all those huge 4 wheel drive vehicles that mom's use to take their kids to school. The most "off road" work they do is to drive across the lawn, and they never, ever get mud on them!!
Thanks for sharing the review
Hideous dash. Absolutely horrendous. Nice vid Spurge!
Bell Moto 111. Hell yes.
i like the yamaha scr950 i like tobuy one
is this a good beginner bike
I'm thinking about picking one up to add to the stable as a street tracker project, I think that is where it would shine. Local dealer has them for $6,995, that's a deal
Billy McFuggin I just bought mine yesterday for 3999 New,
What?? that's a deal right there
That's a crazy good deal, local dealer has the 2017s for $5,699!
LeggoMyWebos well it must have been hot, that’s ridiculous, the bike is on sale now for 6599 here in NY
I just got two brand new for $2800 each! (Not 2019s just no miles on them) I live in a college town and think I can filp them easy, if not I think it looks sweet and have alot of dirt roads to tear up in it that I use my rzr900 on
Cool looking... hate the speedometer.. should have been retro mechanical looking.. what were they thinking/
I like the looks. If it were more like a 500 cc 350lb bike with a useable dash, I think it would make a lot more sense. Needs more like 6 or 7 in of travel, and needs to be below 7k. Just my opinion.
The 2017s are going for $5,700 now in the US.
The bikes what it is !!!abit of a fashion item...but I just demo,ed the new trumpet scrambler ,,I found the exhaust getting in my way when standing ,this sickle has no such problem,,,, but I would bend those front down tube back then fit a bigger diameter front wheel(would it work? "Who knows!!) Have to say Vee twin are my fav engine congregations'!! Would I buy?? Just maybe..
Is a Triumph Scrambler superior for minor off road like this with less issues with sand and ravines?
Sand will still be a problem with the Scrambler (I've tried with my personal T-100 that I've modified with a taller suspension). But you'll have a bit more suspension travel in the back and a bit more ground clearance as a result. You also get better cornering clearance on the street. You'll be fine with minor off-road treks but I would recommend swapping the tires out on either bike. Consider something like the Mitas E-07 tires.
That was perfectly detailed yet still concise. Thank you!
what gloves are you wearing?
They are the REV'IT! Dirt 2 gloves. -TeamZilla Chris
*www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/revit-gloves-dirt
Why the hell wouldn't they make it with more ground clearance
1:18 Of course it wouldn't like sand. It's rough coarse and irritating. Plus, it gets everwhere.
Hola.
Cuanto mides??
1'90cm???
Pareces alto y yo soy igual y me planteo comprarla pero no sé si es cómoda si eres alto
Gracias👍🇪🇦
"With all that being said" you guys keep saying this in every single review multiple times, change up your script dudes! Good review thanks!
What were those gloves? I really like the look of them
Those are my personal Rev'It! Dirt 2 gloves. I love them. They are my "do anything" go-to gloves. I bought my dad a pair for Christmas last year as well. It was a gamble because he is super picky about gear but he ended up digging them as well. Only thing to watch out for is the touch screen fingertip on the index finger wears out quickly. Cheers!

I just purchased this and pick it up on Friday, any pointers? I'm a COMPLETELY new Rider.
Sure, here are some basics. Also, take a rider course if you haven't already done so. -DrewZilla

Trevor Duncan you like the bike?
Oh man, I'm loving it! I also bought a Helmet through you guys (Fly Luxx Graphic Large) and it came in the mail in two days, which was amazing! Your videos on reviews and tutorials are amazing guys! Thanks for reaching out to my comment, It shows RevZilla is an amazing company and is really focused on their riders. As far as the Yamaha Scr950, it's an amazing motorcycle, and really is a fun and exciting motorcycle. Was able to get it up to 115mph, it rides super smoothly, takes a passenger very well, and really calls attention on the road. The amount of love this bike gets through the biker community is insane! Thanks guys!
You're a "COMPLETELY new Rider" and are driving you bike at 115mph and carrying passengers? Seriously? Neither is recommended for a newbie like you.
Well at least he isn't on a sportbike.
nice highway 78 inspiration point your in my neighborhood
Yaqui Pass Rd was amazing! Your backyard is gorgeous.
yea some good riding out here. pretty much year round. gets hot in the summer but its still nice
This motobike is the best and heavy scrambler in the world
So.... how does it compare to the, ahem: 900 TR Scrambler (I said 'ahem', because it's more like 800'some... although the new one is truly a 900cc, I hear) and Ducati Scrambler?
The SCR950 is a good street bike but is heavier and less capable as a scrambler compared to the others. See our reviews of both. -DrewZilla

2mins in and we get his 205 weight lol was wondering how long it woud take haha
hey guys - what boots was spurge wearing? cheers
Those are my Rev'It! Rodeo boots. I love the boots, but fair warning, my first pair lasted only a year before giving out. My most recent pair has been warrantied 3 times in 6 months. It bears mention that Rev'It!'s warranty team has been fantastic in replacing them with brand new boots every time, but I'm still on my 3rd pair of boots (4th if you count my original pair from last year).
For the money, I would hold out. TCX has some new boots hitting the market in a few months. They share a similar style and price point to the Rodeos but the quality appears to be vastly superior. Hope that helps, Troy!
Does anyone know what kind of helment he was wearing?
Yep. It's the new Bell Moto 3. It's not officially released yet. It should be hitting the shelves in the next month or so.
www.revzilla.com/common-tread/the-bell-moto-3
+Spurgeon Dunbar sweet looks badass
MotoMatt DOT and ECE rated as well. My biggest complaint was the lack of venting.
I predict seeing 2017 SCR950s brand new for sale for pennies on the dollar in 2020.
Already happening, my local dealer has a new 2017 for $4600. (I'm going to take a 2nd look)
Fun fact. Steve McQueen didn't have any more ground clearance then that
Good first bike.
When will they price this competitively?
Or when they fix the speedo so you can see it during the day lol
it's a shame that seat height is so tall yet the lean angle before scraping is so small :(
Has Revzilla ever done a ride review on the Yamaha Super Tenre>?
No, we have not done a video review on the Super Tenere, but it's possible we might in the future. -DrewZilla
just curious because I own one..It (to me) is a pretty good ride but it does have room for improvements.Of course mine is a 2013 xt1200z basic tenere no frills manual adjust suspension but overall a pretty good machine..
Yamaha shouldve done this "scrambler" with the r3 and fz(mt)-07 as a mix
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm waiting for the S1000RR Scrambler from BMW...
Otherwise known as "The New Widowmaker".
hello and comfortable for a tall and heavy person?
Yes, it can be comfortable for a tall and heavy person. It's best to go sit on one if you can. -DrewZilla
Hey guys, i'm looking for a bike simulair to this, only with a 250cc engine since i cannot have any heavier bikes yet :C (im only 20)
How about a Honda Rebel or Yamaha V Star 250? -DrewZilla
RevZilla Thanks, they look great!
How about the awesome Suzuki van van 200, yes its 50cc smaller than what you want but I can say its the more capable easy ride you would expect, also its fuel injected with bubble tires that will grab any terrain
Suzuki TU250X, some in my area for under $4k
Why would you scramble on a heavy bike with no clearance? I'm sick of this marketing BS shoving the Scrambler concept down our throats. This is not a scrambler, its poser crap.
Have to agree. If it's a 90% 'on road' bike why take it off road at all??
It's marketed to those fucking hipsters. What would you expect?
Our goal was to see how far "10%" would take us. Plus, sometimes it's just fun taking a bike where it doesn't belong.
Nice review Spurgeon! I wish they would market this bike kinda like the SR400... a return to the basic, universal motorcycle of the 70's with maybe some offroad capabilities, not a scrambler.
weren't "scramblers" invented by hipsters?
where did you get that helmet
Ahhh.... The Bell Moto 3. It's not out yet. Should be hitting shelves in the next month or so.
www.revzilla.com/common-tread/the-bell-moto-3
What is the seat height of this motorcycle?
Yamaha lists the seat height as 32.7 inches. -DrewZilla
Fantastic review as always. This bike had so much potential and sadly, they missed the mark. To me at least. They would've been miles ahead taking a look at the old xs650's, that styling which has been so easily turned into a scrambler for years and went with that. This current engine is great, but belt drive, come on now. Especially not on something you want to call a scrambler. Hopefully they learn from this, and can one day release an actual scrambler. Longer shocks with more travel, actual ground clearance, and maybe give me a skid plate and I'll tolerate the weight.
hey would i be too tall for this bike im 6'4, i really dont want to look crazy lol, this will be my 1st bike
Spurgeon in the video is 6'3", so you can see how it fits him. It should be comfortable enough for you. -DrewZilla
how much is it sir?
Here in the US, Yamaha lists the MSRP as $8,699. -DrewZilla
Looks like a gigantic version of my old DT175. Kind of a general purpose bike... toy. It would be better on the road than the "adventure" bikes and not as good off the road. They have other offerings for the crossover role.
I like the engine, wruuhhhm. But seat is too short. how two people can sit comfortably.
Yamaha should have made a scrambler out of the MT-03 or 07.
The roads remind me of N.J.... NOT !! Oh how I dream of having pavement that nice. Anyway, question: I am 6'3" 190 lbs. Would I fit this bike? P.S. love your vids !
Spurgeon is also 6'3", so you'd fit similarly to how he fits. I'd try to go sit on one at a Yamaha dealer to feel how comfortable it is for yourself. -DrewZilla
Quanto se alto
how tall are you????
Spurgeon is 6'3". -DrewZilla
ducati scrambler or this?
Definitely the Ducati. -DrewZilla
I just got one and I love it !
Have you really? I'm considering trading my 2018 Fat Bob for one, maybe...
Its fun to ride, has lots of power and its only 547 lbs.
bolt C-spec was maybe the most uncomfortable bike i've ridden in recent memory, with a rather dull (i guess you could say approachable) engine. This SCR950 seems compromised in every possible way. Frankly it doesn't even look as good as any of its 'scrambler' competitors.
Dude, that bike IS the definition of a scrambler! It’s what my sporty would be if I “scrambled” it myself. Except it’s probably even better and I don’t have to do anything to it. Except enjoy the true essence of scrambling! I really dig it.....except the speedo, awful beyond belief 🤢
this or triumph scrambler??
Triumph. -DrewZilla
nice bike not for me i am tall and my big boots will be an issue its too low
Should I buy one for $5000 in 2023 with 500 miles on it?
Nevermind
