  • Fitting a new Timing Belt to an MG6 1.8T engine or MG-Rover K-Series 1.8 Turbo.
This engine is being readied for transplant into my MG ZT 1.8T saloon. When I first posted this plan on various MG sites, wise judges mentioned take opportunity to fit new Belt. The evidence on inspection showed the belt on the engine recently renewed and was new and still in fine condition. Today I had second thoughts. So I fitted a new MG-Rover DOHC K-Series Timing Belt part number LHN100560. Looking at the old belt after removal I was reassured to see SAIC/ Contitech. The latter brand I have fitted several times in the past when working on cars.
The attached images may be of interest to anyone considering working on the K-Series MG5 engine for the first time. Fitting the belt can be tricky and was at first as shown in ths eight minutes video. As soon as I used a breaker bar on the 22mm Crankshaft pulley belt to make more Slack/Play in the Timing Belt in the Water Pump and Tensioner areas, the belt slipped on easy as pie. That slight adjustment using a Breaker Bar on the Crankshaft Pully ALWAYS does the trick for me. Just the merest movement is all that's necessary.
The other still images show before and after checks after rotating the Engine Manually for at least four complete revolutions. That check to ensure no metal to metal contact if somehow the Timing Belt has been fitted wrongly.
PLEASE NOTE. That puffing and blowing you can hear from me was not put on for effect. It is not hard work.
I am slowly recovering from Long Covid. Hence the breathlessness. After wearing face masks for best part of three years, no sign of CV-19 in our family. Then at the end of last summer my wife and her friend returned from a well earned eight day break on the EU Mainland. Soon after leaving the plane both tested positive. Both me and my son also tested positive not long after. Typical.
